It really isn't that bad of a price tag considering it includes three full games and DLC from 8 years. Of course it sounds a lot when you put it like that but there really isn't any reason to buy everything at once. It's not like they hide universal game mechanics behind DLC like the israelites at Paradox with EU4, and you can still encounter the new factions on the world map. Raising the DLC prices while including less content is devious though.

After learning about Creative Assembly's "Legacy Project" I will be extremely happy to see them get shut down after Hyenas fails. They claim there are not enough "minorities" in game development and state that there are actually lots of non-programmer and non-designer roles in the industry suitable for them.
Hopefully someone else takes the reigns. One thing that ive always wondered as CA went on this downward spiral is why there are no clones. The total War formula is so addicting as a strategy genre, I dont see why someone else hasnt made the good Total Wars that people have been wanting from CA.
Do we know of CA holds patents on elements of the combat that would effectively box out competition? Maybe it is just small enough of a niche for another studio to not bother, but big enough of an engine build that a single guy or small team couldn't do it.

TWW3 was end of series to begin with. Leak from 2018 (?) showed business map for TWW1-3 with all DLC's, there was no extra TWW planned. They just went out with a bang, which is common place.
When 3 first came out I remember just telling myself I’d wait until they fixed up the buggy state and immortal empires to come. I trusted the skeleton crew that ironed out 2 so well. I’m amazed to find the former just never really happened
3 just seemed like such a step down from the very beginning. Even down to the UI, did they ever change that ugly uniform red that was for every faction? In 2 the UI's were customized for each faction iirc
I'm still pissed off at the state of archers/guns for some of the factions, and guess its related to the partial-TW2 code being used. Empire Crossbowmen seem to be in the worse state they ever been in and Vampirates Gun guys have so many targetting issues when they use to be so solid vs monstrous or larger units.
As many anons have pointed out, TW3 is bugged out the ass and hilarious how no one even considers the original campaign to be a thing. I tried it once and just wanted to quit after the first realm... and this was over a year since the game came out.

The developers of tw3 clearly have no idea what makes total war fun to play. They made a campaign that actively punished map painting with portals spawning in your territory, bigger territory means more portal armies being spammed at you. Meanwhile your faction leader is playing mario party minigames jn the chaos realms instead of engaging with the grand strategy game that players bought the game to play. Tw3 had to purposefully made wrong. I cant believe they are this out of touch.

It's really incredible. TWW2's Vortex was a terrible campaign too and they clearly realised that because all new DLC lords came with their own mechanics and campaign objectives that let you ignore it. Then they somehow made an even worse main campaign for the third game.

So you want Throt with his laboratory gimmick? I would honestly recommend against it. At least until you decide you like the Skaven playstyle, it's not for everyone.
What you could do is just get WH3 base to play IE and then try to military ally various other races and request their armies to use. Then you'll know if you like a particular race at least in battle, somewhat. Sure the AI armies are generally trash but it at least gives you an idea of how they work and how they sound like.

warriors of chaos has undivided lords with the most freedom and an absurdly huge roster. champions lords are all aligned to a god so its a bit more restrictive, the basegame for warhammer 3 has 2 undivided lords also.
I'd say if your bugdet is tight just start with warhammer 3, + warriors and champions of chaos. the newest dlc has some bonus tzeentch stuff but its a bit overpriced to say the least.

Most of the DLC lords actually have some kind of gimmick with unlocks over time that's independent or complementary to the standard build building to recruit unit system. If you want races where you progressively unlock more/better units through a system other than just building the required recruitment buildings then you have Chorfs and Beastmen that do that baseline. Other lords like Snikch unlock various actions over time through their gimmick instead of units. Tehenhauin is a mix of both. There's something for everyone in these games.

After learning about Creative Assembly's "Legacy Project" I will be extremely happy to see them get shut down after Hyenas fails. They claim there are not enough "minorities" in game development and state that there are actually lots of non-programmer and non-designer roles in the industry suitable for them.
At this point I am almost happy to sacrifice Total War, a series I've loved for a long time, just to see this studio die.
Hopefully someone else takes the reigns. One thing that ive always wondered as CA went on this downward spiral is why there are no clones. The total War formula is so addicting as a strategy genre, I dont see why someone else hasnt made the good Total Wars that people have been wanting from CA.
Do we know of CA holds patents on elements of the combat that would effectively box out competition? Maybe it is just small enough of a niche for another studio to not bother, but big enough of an engine build that a single guy or small team couldn't do it.

TWW3 was end of series to begin with. Leak from 2018 (?) showed business map for TWW1-3 with all DLC's, there was no extra TWW planned. They just went out with a bang, which is common place.
When 3 first came out I remember just telling myself I’d wait until they fixed up the buggy state and immortal empires to come. I trusted the skeleton crew that ironed out 2 so well. I’m amazed to find the former just never really happened
3 just seemed like such a step down from the very beginning. Even down to the UI, did they ever change that ugly uniform red that was for every faction? In 2 the UI's were customized for each faction iirc
I'm still pissed off at the state of archers/guns for some of the factions, and guess its related to the partial-TW2 code being used. Empire Crossbowmen seem to be in the worse state they ever been in and Vampirates Gun guys have so many targetting issues when they use to be so solid vs monstrous or larger units.
As many anons have pointed out, TW3 is bugged out the ass and hilarious how no one even considers the original campaign to be a thing. I tried it once and just wanted to quit after the first realm... and this was over a year since the game came out.

The developers of tw3 clearly have no idea what makes total war fun to play. They made a campaign that actively punished map painting with portals spawning in your territory, bigger territory means more portal armies being spammed at you. Meanwhile your faction leader is playing mario party minigames jn the chaos realms instead of engaging with the grand strategy game that players bought the game to play. Tw3 had to purposefully made wrong. I cant believe they are this out of touch.
It's really incredible. TWW2's Vortex was a terrible campaign too and they clearly realised that because all new DLC lords came with their own mechanics and campaign objectives that let you ignore it. Then they somehow made an even worse main campaign for the third game.
Yeah I really enjoyed Noctilus, Grom, Eltharion in Vortex.

warriors of chaos has undivided lords with the most freedom and an absurdly huge roster. champions lords are all aligned to a god so its a bit more restrictive, the basegame for warhammer 3 has 2 undivided lords also.
I'd say if your bugdet is tight just start with warhammer 3, + warriors and champions of chaos. the newest dlc has some bonus tzeentch stuff but its a bit overpriced to say the least.

Most of the DLC lords actually have some kind of gimmick with unlocks over time that's independent or complementary to the standard build building to recruit unit system. If you want races where you progressively unlock more/better units through a system other than just building the required recruitment buildings then you have Chorfs and Beastmen that do that baseline. Other lords like Snikch unlock various actions over time through their gimmick instead of units. Tehenhauin is a mix of both. There's something for everyone in these games.
twisted and twilight is a skaven dlc, one single skaven lord has access to that mechanic. it is a good dlc on both the skaven and wood elf side, worth.
if you're buying skaven content you probably want warhammer 2 and also the prophet and the warlock (ikkit being one of the more fun lords in the game)
other than that though, if you are serious about going all in on chaos i'd just reccomend you get warhammer 3, champions of chaos, and warriors of chaos for Warhammer 1. though even if you just got warriors of chaos dlc for Warhammer 1, since they benefit massively from the champions of chaos content as the champions of chaos -free- overhaul applied to the warhammer 1 dlc also (it went from objectively the worst dlc in the game to a top tier one overnight for fricking free).

I hated the retinue system at first but grew to like it. It would actually make a lot of sense for something like Med3 where dukes/barons/etc under your command have their own retinue rather than the entire army being under the command of a single general.
