I would remove the ability to have addons, and simply improve the current features of the game so addons wouldn't be required.

Raids are 10 man group content with an optional 15 extra.

Three talent trees for different situations (10 second cast to switch).

    World Firsts don't exist.

Mounts stay as items and you need to visit a stable keeper to withdraw/deposit mounts. Same with pets.

    Solo bossing content.

Have /fart be able to give you a "Shit your pants on accident." debuff

Make unfriendly factions able to be befriended (no matter what negative rep you have)

demand tenure because i am going to rock their fricking world with the product i put out as an evolution of everquest no matter how bad its actual quality. you aren't firing me. don't even try.
WRITE A FRICKING MMO BIBLE. IF MY GAME HAS A LONG-RUNNING STORY IT IS GOING TO FOLLOW IT NO MATTER WHAT. I SHOULD PLAY A BUNCH OF OTHER MMOS THAT EXISTED AT THE TIME AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T. loads of other MMOs were already on the market at the time and WoW did get a lot right but it fricked up just as many things. i will kill everyone in blizzard's building and then myself if ANYONE tries to disrupt the pre-set story or insert their own bullshit ideas into it.
also ABANDON THIS GAME THE VERY FRICKING INSTANT ITS STORY IS DONE AND BEGIN WORK ON A NEW GAME USING THE EXPERIENCE AND MONEY GAINED FROM THE FIRST ONE. MMOS DON'T LAST FOREVER NOR SHOULD THEY. when this MMO dies we retool the game to either be played solo primarily or we take it offline, retool a bunch of shit around, and sell it again as a massive offline game. you're welcome.
massive stipulation in the MMO bible: do not reinvent the wheel every fricking expansion. we should have a basic content mold and we should stick to it, add to it, and never subtract from it. we don't need new systems and subsystems every two to four years, we don't need new progression methods every single two to four years, any morons and any designers that disagree will be free to lick my nuts once i've established the cosby suite which instead of being a breast-milk farm for weird activision castaways will be my own personal sex dungeon.
alliance/horde is moronic, don't bother. arbitrary split-off of the playerbase will cause nothing but problems and headaches in the future no matter how poggers my coworkers think it would be. are they adventurers or are they aligned to a faction? make up your mind, we're not having both. this will keep "kek" from being spammed everywhere by inbred teens on imageboards in the future too.

I'd either make it a pure sandbox MMO or just make it offline. The real issue with wow is that it's story driven so no matter what old content is always going to be irrelevant. If they would have made it more sandox like Runescape or Albin it would be tons better.

      Anonymous

Fino Fano has no problem being story-driven *and* long *AND* an MMO, WoW's problem is its story is dogshit from being written as it went along, and the gameplay itself isn't actually structured around its story while still trying to treat it as an important thing.

        Anonymous

FFXIV was absolutely done with a "let's make it up as we go along" approach, it's just with that game the story was always the point and they have (sometimes) had competent writers.
WoW was not intended to be a story-driven game from the start and its writers are terrible.

          Anonymous

The main differences in the writing process is some thought was put into XIV each time they wrote by the seat of their pants tbh
They're also autistic consistent since it's still been Banri Oda since 1.X handling the larger aspects of the game world
Even with all their missteps they've had a lot of luxuries and staff retention that WoW just never got

            Anonymous

You can really feel that the staff working on WoW has shifted over the years. Dragonflight for example, its questing experience is very emotional and feminine. There's all this focus on what the characters are going through and feeling, or small aspects of their lives that the player probably doesn't care about but women love writing about that stuff.
Like nobody gives a shit if a random centaur has PTSD or that two centaurs are gay. It doesn't matter whatsoever.

I think the thing that's hurt WoW's writing the most is they put the guy who made everything silly and lighthearted on Hearthstone. Just take one look at that game and its like you can see where WoW's soul went.

              Anonymous

I was trying to pinpoint what i hated about the writing in modern wow and it's absolutely that. Just a lot of characters "feeling" things (i.e. they dump their emotional baggage on you). They can also only manage to do this for 2-3 characters per expansion while the rest get sidelined and lose all personality. Like they had so little of an idea of what to do with Malfurion that they just locked him in out-of-story jail until they come up with something.

                Anonymous

Yeah, it's all this touchy-feely, feminine nonsense. Like the part in the Azure Span where Kalecgos is made to accept being given a second home and 'family' among the Tuskarr, which is relevant to his character because his flight is nearly dead. Like who cares? The same plotline was handled better in the same zone when the remaining blue dragons answer his call and fits much better with what's going on in.

            >They're also autistic consistent since it's still been Banri Oda since 1.X handling the larger aspects of the game world
This is one of the big reasons why I just don't give a frick about anything that happens in WoW. Continuity is what gives a story meaning. Let's say that an important lore figure dies or did die in the past, then they're suddenly back because the writers needed a new villain of the expansion. What's the point in being invested then? Any important detail regarding WoW's characters and timeline can just fricking cease to exist, meaning that nothing that happens or is stated has any meaning at all.

ironically, they actively resisted bringing back dead characters in sneedolands, which would have been the obvious thing to do, and focused almost entirely on new characters
and it was terrible and people hated it, lol. so they went back to focusing on established characters again in dragonflight

Less focus on raids and dungeons. More focus on professions, crafting, gathering, and side activities/minigames. Classes are not set in stone upon character creation - you can train to be a druid, warrior, hunter etc all on the same character and swap between them whenever. They all have to be trained individually.

I never said that, friend. I do think those games have much better systems in place for how legacy content is treated, however, and as it is WoW's legacy content is almost entirely deprecated and serves no real purpose. They might as well just truncate it to decrease WoW's HDD footprint like Destiny did.

WoW can't work as a PvP MMO. Everything is designed for PvE and they should double down on that.
If anything I would make sure WoW won't have PvP at all so you can have even more whacky fun stuff in the game.
What's fun in PvE is usually unfun once you use it against another player. Likewise PvP MMOs like Albion have really boring PvE.

Make 4 factions instead of 2.
    >Night Elves
    >Alliance
    >Forsaken
    >Horde
I'd make it so Night Elves/Forsaken can raise rep with both Horde and Alliance.

I'd change the name of the Hunter class to "Ranger". Beast mastery would be a melee spec. Survival would be changed to "Hunting" and focus on traps and throwing weapons.

I'd add more levelling content to 30+ zones. I'd redesign Ashenvale and Plaguelands so it looks more like Warcraft 3. I'd remove Teldrassil and put the Night Elf starting zone in Moonglade.

Druid would be a Night Elf only class. Alliance would get Paladin. Horde get Shaman. Forsaken get Necromancer. I'd improve the UI to function better with multiple pets.

I'd make the ruins of Lordaeron the starting zone for Forsaken and add a lot more levelling content to the "Plague lands". I'd redesign the ruins of Dalaran as a huge zone with multiple neutral factions of Scourge, bandits, Ogres etc.

I'd make Undercity more labyrinthine and I'd change the lore of Sylvanas to be a more mythical and god-like figure to the subservient and mindlessly worshipping Forsaken. She rules from the shadows while numerous tiers of underlings keep her removed from harm. There'd be numerous quests about the different races of slaves under her mind control, much like the Crown of Will quest line in Alterac.

The Forsaken would be able to customize their appearance to look more zombie like, skeleton or ghost-like.

I'd add more quests that flesh out the lore of the Horde and how they go about their daily lives. I'd remove the overt hostilities with the Night Elves.

I'd redesign the Dwarf areas so they get more settlements and make it look more lived-in. I'd delete Gnomeregan and start the Gnome lore from scratch.

I'd make both the Alliance and Horde look canonically weaker to reflect the aim of your character, which is to protect and help out with the rebuilding effort of these civilizations after years of tumultuous war.

Flying mounts are never introduced, appropriate changes to make expansions work without
keep raiding content casual with nothing harder than Naxxramas being introduced
    ditch attunements entirely
add more recipes for professions so they stay competitive with raid gear, possibly dropping from said raids to reward better players, keep material costs reasonable so this helps worse players gear up and do the content themselves.
Discipline Priests can smite heal all the way back in Vanilla (introduced in Cataclysm)
general class balancing so hybrids are at least viable like ret paladins or boomkins in raids during vanilla and onward.
automatic group and raid finders are never introduced, dedicated tools to form groups
1 piece of random loot is personal loot per raid boss, have an additional group of shared loot to be passed out by raid leader, that way all players get "something" at random appropriate for them with a second chance to be decided by the raid group to cut down on loot drama a little.
all addons are not allowed, basic features like threat meters and better bag organization are introduced to compensate

perspective matters ALOT to make a world feel big, ever been to Disneyland/Disney World? they do a ton of perspective tricks to make it seem bigger than it is.

as for the seam issue, it can be a little jarring with some of the zones when going between dedicated entrances but by flying over top of mountains between zones it feels like your going completely out of bounds it looks to bad, they tried to resolve the seam issue a bit in Cataclysm but they made the old world worse in general doing that.

              >but they made the old world worse in general doing that

I like what they did with the world in Cataclysm, it shows that time is actually passing and events are affecting the game world. I play FFXIV, too, and it's still the exact same as it was when ARR first launched to the point it's hilarious when you start the game as a race that didn't exist during ARR and you're the only Au Ra/Viera/Hrothgar that exists in the world until you get to the expansions where they were introduced and nobody remarks on the fact you stick out like a sore thumb.

i honestly wouldn't care if they doubled the speed of ground mounts or more if it meant flying mounts were not introduced.

you see more players zooming past instead of the world being empty entirely as the fly over top out of sight.

        world wont feel so small

        it completely trivializes the landscape.

It doesn't mesh with the overall game design. It has the Super Mario World problem of "you can just fly over all the challenge." And how they've gotten around this, expansion to expansion, is to just continually take flying away from you and make you re-earn it. A better approach would be to implement flying into the level design, like they did with Storm Peaks and Icecrown, and what they've done recently with Dragonflight's zones.

          Anonymous

That's only a problem for brand-new players. Most people playing the game have been playing for years and there's no challenge anyway. Flying lets us get through the old content faster on alts.

            Anonymous

i'd rather let a ground mount have 300%+ movement speed over having them fly.

the amount of convenience additions over the years not just flying mounts has literally taken the MMO out of the game, at this point it is just about a single player game, retail has been dead for years as a result.

              Anonymous

There's still a shitload of people playing the game, not seeing a thousand of them every second doesn't change that. And until you're forced to make a full party to do absolutely anything and everything from level 1 to level 100 then none of these games can be called MMOs.

I've been playing since mid-vanilla. Retail isn't dead. It's not as popular as it used to be and the overall digital landscape has changed with a lot of things now vying for your time, that's what's changed.
The consensus is that Dragonflight is a good (but not amazing) expansion and I see tons of people playing all the time. Ironforge/Org and the Christmas daily recently had big crowds every single day. There's a ton of people in Valdrakken every single day.
