We're probably in a digital dark age. I don't think there will be many primary sources of information left.

Kids in modern day have zero concept on what the internet was was like during the dial-up and DSL era. Most of them don't even know what flash is, let alone how important it was to building modern video hosting sites that they all use religiously
In a hundred years the vast majority of the early and mid internet will be legitimate lost media and lost information.

You can say the same thing about ARPANET and USENET, even the BBS scene of the 80s and 90s is only remembered by a few sad boomers. Maybe that's just the way of the world.

I wonder if the internet's going to change significantly in the next 20 - 30 years. It feels like we're already approaching the upper bounds of what people in the 90s thought the internet would be capable of long-term, the only stuff we're missing is virtual reality chatrooms being commonplace (they're possible but not very high-tech yet and virtual reality is far from universal adoption) and brain-internet interfaces that allow us to experience sensations within the internet (which are debatable of those will ever be adopted for obvious reasons).

I think AI is going to frick the WWW over in some way or form and everyone will move to decentralized networks like in the days of BBS.

            Anonymous

If AI keeps evolving at the rate it currently is there's probably going to be a genuine "authenticity crisis" within the next decade. It's likely going to be hard to believe anything you see or read online because it might all just be AI generated.

            >(they're possible but not very high-tech yet and virtual reality is far from universal adoption)
They're more high-tech now than they ever will be. We're currently in an age where you can drop in a primitive Shrek model from a PS2 game, put a skeleton over it, and import it into VRChat in less than 40 minutes, add another 40 and you can give him a floppy dong and frick other men in big titty anime avatars using voice changers to sound like anime prostitutes.

This is the most VR chatrooms will ever be capable of and copyright concerns and censorship will only make them worse much like how they made the internet as a whole worse. That's why the Metaverse failed: Who the frick would want to use a virtual chatroom where everybody looks like this instead of Asuka, Shrek, Superman, master chief, etc? We're living Ready Player One now, and the only way for it to go is down.

I think ED should be taken with a grain of salt and a disclaimer that it's /b/'s personal history written from a self-fellating /b/ perspective, and that a LOT of articles are just somebody's personal lolcow that nobody else cares about

Doubtful. People back then very much believed that if something was out online, it'd never be lost/forgotten.
Fast forward to now and think of how much has been scrubbed, censored, or simply lost to time.

I would unironically kill myself if I had to do 14 years over again, if I knew every bad thing that was going to happen but had no way of stopping it or convincing others to stop it, if I had to wait nearly a decade for my family members to become tolerable, if I had to deal with high school and got to experience having no friends a second time. Just writing this has depressed me.
