A few years ago me and a couple other anons did playthroughs of random niche MMOs where we would play and get as far as we can into the game then move onto the next MMO. If the game was horrible we'd move onto the next, but we mostly played them to experience the atmosphere and group content. Would be cool to do something like that here.
I've actually been meaning to, maybe with a group of friends or well intending Gankerros. I kinda want to play a game without having a decade wide knowledge gap in, just for the sense of adventure once more.
and that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. if we could gather some anons it might b cool
We could start on /vm/. How me and the other anons did it back then was we would add onto pic-related and create a strawpoll for anons to vote on which MMO we play. Then we play it for a month and at the end of the month we put more MMOs on the list and do another strawpoll. We (mostly) did niche obscure MMOs but with a little well known ones added in.
Nah this is the bigger list and the boxes highlighted blue were the ones we played. We never got to play most of them and there's probably a lot more MMOs to add onto the list. My personal favorites were PSU and Shin Megami Tensei Imagine.

It's honestly better than RO. Has better music and atmosphere.

you WILL get all your progress and account deleted when one of the devs has a meltdown or can't afford their estrogen
you WILL get all your progress and account deleted when the owner decides he'd rather buy a new car then keep the server running
you WILL get cucked
I never got to experience MMOs at their peak (or at all for that matter)
How would I into something like Vanilla WoW? I heard WoW Classic is suboptimal but also they shut to down private servers for that experience years before Classic.
> when i want to play old school ragnarok online on a private server > most servers i played back then dont exist >any that still exist are just a shell of themselves
Well, I may as well ask, whats the best private ff11 server? I know they all cover different eras, but I'm good with anything as long as its drop rates arent boosted to hell.
I play a SWG private server every now and then, usually whatever's had a wipe most recently or is otherwise the most populated if nothing's wiped within 3mo, get a jedi slot, then quit before I play it (lmao).
I played maplestory pservers for a while but they're not fun anymore.
runescape pservers were awesome but they like most other pservers have turned into cashgrabs, everything is about "donations" to get speedran past every bit of content, and most of that 'content' gets stretched out to near infinity with grind to incentivize voting or paying money.
It's just a chore, it gets so boring when the pservers don't let you just do the fun shit, that was the whole reason I enjoyed them, everything now aims to emulate the "original" experience.
No thanks, I lived through that, a ragtag group of ~500 people isn't remotely close to being able to revive that original feeling anyway, I want to speed through and play the shit I never got to as a kid.
IT only allows up to lv12 rn so people capped out in like 2 hours nad are mostly going around fricking around and exploring to find differences but it's no different than another "classic" pserver right now just with an updated engine (not unlike the modded ones pservers use)
In theory, sure, but I, and most who are playing it right now (coming from pservers) are expecting they're limiting content right now because it's straight up incomplete after months of posturing about how great it'd be.
I also anticipate it to be busted wide open by supporting Krono (the daybreak equivalent of wow tokens, or plex, etc) as the core economic item. They're not in the beta, but I just don't anticipate it going over well.
I've definitely been wrong though, I wholeheartedly believed wow classic would tank.
I'd say keep an eye out for players to dip in the beta and for them to say something akin to "We've seen how much you all want to try, so we're opening it up for everyone!"
I expect it to happen after the cap is raised to 32, about 2 days after.
I feel like the only people that play these private servers are oldgays that already know the game. Of course there are outliers who are new and curious, but my experience with playing any old MMO is "read the guide" rather than "find out by playing the game". Reading the guide should be a midgame thing at earliest.
>I feel like the only people that play these private servers are oldgays that already know the game.
That's mostly the case. The popular ones like EQ, FFXI and WoW get some new players here and there but it's mostly oldgays minmaxing the frick out of the games because everything about them has been solved years ago.
Any good Lineage 2 servers? Preferably C3/C4
that would be nice, I've been looking for a C1/2/3 server as well (not L2Classic though) and I couldn't find any
Oh hey I was playing PSU Clementine the other day.
Would i like psu if i didnt like pso1, but did enjoy pso2 base?
I think so. It has stuff like photon arts for combat and the quality of life stuff like casino and your personal room decorating.
Base was basically just PSU with a jump button leeching off PSO1 nostalgia until episode 4 so yeah.

That sounds like a cool idea
>>/vm/
totally forgot that board existed. I'm down
I'd suggest /vg/ but the jannies there might be anal about a general not being dedicated to one game.
There's multiple generals like that. /vg/ is just very fast so you need a decent amount of posters to keep a thread alive.
Were these all the MMOs you guys played?

Make a general on /vg/ or /vm/ and lets start this. Someone come up with a general name.
Ganker MMO adventure
How many votes does the strawpoll need to have before a game is decided?
15 or 20
PSU is way too jank to play compared to PSO2
No it's the same loop but at least you're not just spamming the same 2-3 hit combo and the endgame isn't mastering the worst menuing system ever.
I've actually been meaning to, maybe with a group of friends or well intending Gankerros. I kinda want to play a game without having a decade wide knowledge gap in, just for the sense of adventure once more.
shan't
>playing PSU when PSP2i is a massive upgrade over it
Why?
I'm pretty sure Clementine backported a lot of P2i's additions.
I will now play your game
Does TERA have private servers? Is it even playable in any form anymore? It's been so long since I've played
>Is it even playable in any form anymore?
Console versions are still up
you WILL get all your progress and account deleted when one of the devs has a meltdown or can't afford their estrogen

how do i play this?
PSU Clementine
ty
https://psu-clementine.com/wiki/index.php/Getting_Started_with_Clementine
How active is it right now?
idk but it's a lobby based game so it's not like you need other players to play it
Has over 100 players online daily. You can even check player count in-game.
There was this one mmo where you piloted robots o.o
gimme psu but with good kbm controls
I never got to experience MMOs at their peak (or at all for that matter)

it's too late anon, the good old times are gone and whatever experience you can have today pales in comparison
> when i want to play old school ragnarok online on a private server

i used to replay RO up until around 2020 tbh
RO was killed by the playerbase

Horizon is the only server. Don't get baited into playing any other.
>Horizon is the only server
and that's a bad thing

I was so mad when I found out that SWGemu had done a fresh server and by the time I found out it was dead
EQ2 Origins (which is their version of classic) is in beta right now though you need a sub to participate. No clue if its any good.

I'm not familiar with everquest 2, does this server have potential?
In theory, sure, but I, and most who are playing it right now (coming from pservers) are expecting they're limiting content right now because it's straight up incomplete after months of posturing about how great it'd be.

guess I'll cautiously keep an eye out for the actual release then

Good thread OP. But it stopped working long time ago. But I hope you all get to enjoy your MMOs a little longer.
With PSU I wanna play ranged but I can't deal with the shit aiming. What melee weapons are fun?
dual sabers
I can't wait for the thread to be made and have mmo adventures with anon!
>inb4 nobody makes it
Not the original anon but I might make another thread on Ganker to bring interest if it doesn't get made today since yuro hours
>pantheon was supposed to be one of those savior of the genre types
>now it looks like a mobile game from 2012
mmorpgs are cursed
