No I'm pretty sure they can appear as beautiful women or hide their appearance in the lore. That's not their true form of course, but I thought that was something they could do. We only ever see what they look like for battle in the miniatures.
The WHFB lore, at least, implied that their powers were passive, through pheromones, hypnosis, etc. They aren't shapeshifters and are always actually hideous.

Have you ever tried to fight with two weapons, it's really hard to do even basic things like angle the blade correctly or put enough power in the swings. It might be slow but anyone can crack a skull with a two handed axe, and I doubt our immolator in question has much axe fighting experience and you know the whole being on fire thing most likely won't help his technique.

Mordheim's Slaanesh cult had a mansion converted into something that looked like it was from Warhammer and not IMVU. The statues were the best part because you had to get close to realise they were snake women holding daggers behind their backs because chaos is supposed to be fricked up.

It's like Darkest Dungeon in that the art's good, the mechanics aren't great, the campaign missions are unfair and the game takes 100 hours to play... so it's fun if you're into that sort of thing.
Wishlist it and wait for a sale especially if you want to play one of the DLC warbands.
Never take more than ~6 units into a mission so it doesn't take 2 hours to play. The AI is forced to match you on point and model count (and maybe injuries too, it's hard to tell).

Just have fun with it. You'll learn as you go. Online guides help you to start to figure out how to build units but don't be afraid to ignore them as some of the "meta" is about making glass cannons which is a bad idea.

I never played tabletop, but the optimal way to play Mordheim is to have one super powerful high-level unit accompanied by a goonsquad of level zero morons. The AI will match you in unit count, but instead of concentrating all point value on one unit like your own squad, it'll spread it out across all of its units. Which means that their averaged-out goons will be slightly better than your handicapped morons, but can't even touch your uberchad.
It's a dumb system, especially since the AI is completely incompetent even if you're not trying to exploit it.
The only thing worse than how janky and outright tedious Mordheim was, is how they somehow managed to make Necromunda even worse by stripping away what little complexity the first game had.
Dawn of War looked more cartoon-y than the traditional "muh grimdark," but it was still great. Same thing with Mechanicus, it's a balance. Too dark/gritty and it becomes boring and shitty to look at.
I know 40k is cartoony and that's why I said it looked soft rather than cartoony. It's difficult for me to describe but it lacks this harshness that you would think is typical of 40k. Your image has this grunginess that I think is more typical of 40k and that I believe Rogue Trader lacks. I guess one way I can put it is that Rogue Trader's art direction kind of reminds me of mobile game
I get what you mean but these games are made in unity and already run like shit, having the overdesigned baroque shit typically found in WH40k would make loading screens unbearable.
Things look too clean and not "old" enough like something that has existed for millennia which is a big part of what gives 40k its sense of grandiosity and mystery imo

I've said for years a squad RPG based on Dark Heresy would be amazing, be a bunch of expendable mooks under an inquisitor to investigate stuff.
Blend of Rogue Trader rules and later stuff like Dark Heresy. Also according to some interview because the game is rather restrictive since you can only be the Rogue Trader they are going to incorporate the different backgrounds your rogue trader can have (e.g Comissar, Crimelord, Imperial Guard, Navy Officer) like pathfinder's class archtypes

You're missing out, DH2 is probably the best 40k RPG with RT a close second. Some people prefer DH 1 over 2 but you can roll with either. Just bear in mind they're all pretty crunchy but that's how I like 'em.

Usually people are LFG's on roll20 and you can ask to join from there. I think there's also some tabletop simulator games on steam that people may use but I'm not familiar with those. If you have any IRL friends interested in 40k I'd say try to convince them to give it a shot with you. Bear in mind the first time you guys try it, it's going to be really slow and take forever since you're all new to the rules and you'll be spending lots of time looking things up. The more you do it the better the flow gets.

Rogue Trader rules were shit unless you were playing with the latest errata and homebrewed space combat/exploration rules. The difficulty scale went from You Will Explode Into Pink Mist Attempting to Tie Your Shoelaces as a novice to being absolutely unbeatable past the middle part of a normal campaign. Every single non-core rule like colony management for example was broken.
If you're into that shit and endless bookkeeping then more power to you.

Playing a game with good friends who aren't spergs and have at least some creativity or intelligence or in some cases, encyclopedic knowledge of the lore, is what makes a game fun. Plus FFG40k system was inherently mathematically shit because it was just about stacking modifiers until you couldn't fail the roll, even if you were using a subsystem that wasn't inherently broken like navigating the warp or managing a colony. My GM homebrewed or handwaved all the bullshit and made it fun however. Also there's no denying that FFG wrote the best WH40K lore ever made.
If you're playing DH and Only War, sure. Another quirk of the FFG40K system was that DH characters inevitably became much more powerful than Rogue Trader characters in the endgame, even though RT was supposed to be the highest "power level" below Death Watch and Black Crusade, which involved Space Marines.
Rogue Trader is supposed to be about people who are already above the average grunt. The Arch-Militant is supposed to be someone who is one of the top soldiers/warriors of their homeworld, the Seneschal is someone who could be a crime lord or big time trader without the Rogue Trader, etc.

That's all a moot point since, again, the Tau Empire is on the opposite end of the galaxy from where this game will take place. That said, you aren't playing as the Imperium, you're playing as A rogue trader with A ship and a modest trade empire of maybe a few planets on the frontier. If the Tau were in an accessible position, they are far and away more than enough to be a threat to the player character.

Slaanesh gets the worst out of this whole "everything must be smothered in one color" thing everyone is doing to the Chaos Gods now.
Khorne does that well because its all about blood, and if it isn't blood then its Khorne minted brass, and if it isn't brass then its fire. Nurgle is all about disease and it'd be hard for strange colors to be sickening and disgusting to look at. Tzeentch basically monopolizes warp stuff colors, blue, and his schemes can basically mean you can make anyone a Tzeentch agent.
Slaanesh though? She is supposed to be about excess, He is unlike the others because anything can wind up being degenerate. To the point where his realm are 9 separate traps that have distinctly different themes and RPG materials flat out calls him the Devil. The purple just oversaturates and doesn't give the impression his followers pursue what they want.

I came in during 4th-5th edition when Dawn of War came out, which is what got me into the setting. While 2nd and 1st have interesting art I like the later stuff more before everything got all digital.
A Tzeentchian lord would make a good antagonist. Unfortunately with all the dark eldar and slannesh stuff we've seen, its likely going to be over top edgy and cringe given the artsyle they are utilizing.

In terms of companions so far I'd say is an improvement, they seem to be more organic to the setting and less one a kind/unique/snowflake like in WOTR, at the very least they are including flaws in the characters descriptions.

I feel like you're shoehorning commissars into such a narrow character type that of course it won't work with a character focused rpg where you have dialogue options and shit. The background is more likely to provide a set of starter skills and the occasional unique dialogue option, not limit your character to a cliche that just shoots the cast the first time they fail a fear roll.
I'm only talking about cliche was a joke, but the point remains that a highly trained *political* officer, chosen among other things because of his pure unwavering faith in the empire and the emperor would not suddenly become willing to screw over loyal citizens of the empire, or excessively deal with xenos just because he became a RT.
They're people like anyone else, and succumb to greed just as easily. But if they're including a chaos path, no doubt you can also play a loyalist and reject the xeno companions if you really want to.
Chaos Commissars aren't rare, it's just that GW rarely bothers to mention the non-Astartes chaos forces in their shit, if at all. They're called Renegade Enforcers and they serve the same purpose as Imperial Commisars, down to the whole "shooting your own troops in the head to keep morale steady" (at least until 9th edition when that ability got removed now they're just boring units that buff units around them)

Those backgrounds will have to have a more significant impacts. After all, you can also be a Navigator or a Psyker.
They should have made another PF game or a game based on another franchise. There's already a million WH40K games out there. While I enjoy reading WH40K lore wikis, I wouldn't ever want to play as any of the characters in the universe since they're all un-relatable miserable pieces of shit.

It's like Darkest Dungeon in that the art's good, the mechanics aren't great, the campaign missions are unfair and the game takes 100 hours to play... so it's fun if you're into that sort of thing.
Wishlist it and wait for a sale especially if you want to play one of the DLC warbands.
Never take more than ~6 units into a mission so it doesn't take 2 hours to play. The AI is forced to match you on point and model count (and maybe injuries too, it's hard to tell).

Just have fun with it. You'll learn as you go. Online guides help you to start to figure out how to build units but don't be afraid to ignore them as some of the "meta" is about making glass cannons which is a bad idea.

I never played tabletop, but the optimal way to play Mordheim is to have one super powerful high-level unit accompanied by a goonsquad of level zero morons. The AI will match you in unit count, but instead of concentrating all point value on one unit like your own squad, it'll spread it out across all of its units. Which means that their averaged-out goons will be slightly better than your handicapped morons, but can't even touch your uberchad.
It's a dumb system, especially since the AI is completely incompetent even if you're not trying to exploit it.
The only thing worse than how janky and outright tedious Mordheim was, is how they somehow managed to make Necromunda even worse by stripping away what little complexity the first game had.

Dawn of War looked more cartoon-y than the traditional "muh grimdark," but it was still great. Same thing with Mechanicus, it's a balance. Too dark/gritty and it becomes boring and shitty to look at.
I know 40k is cartoony and that's why I said it looked soft rather than cartoony. It's difficult for me to describe but it lacks this harshness that you would think is typical of 40k. Your image has this grunginess that I think is more typical of 40k and that I believe Rogue Trader lacks. I guess one way I can put it is that Rogue Trader's art direction kind of reminds me of mobile game

You're missing out, DH2 is probably the best 40k RPG with RT a close second. Some people prefer DH 1 over 2 but you can roll with either. Just bear in mind they're all pretty crunchy but that's how I like 'em.

Usually people are LFG's on roll20 and you can ask to join from there. I think there's also some tabletop simulator games on steam that people may use but I'm not familiar with those. If you have any IRL friends interested in 40k I'd say try to convince them to give it a shot with you. Bear in mind the first time you guys try it, it's going to be really slow and take forever since you're all new to the rules and you'll be spending lots of time looking things up. The more you do it the better the flow gets.

Rogue Trader rules were shit unless you were playing with the latest errata and homebrewed space combat/exploration rules. The difficulty scale went from You Will Explode Into Pink Mist Attempting to Tie Your Shoelaces as a novice to being absolutely unbeatable past the middle part of a normal campaign. Every single non-core rule like colony management for example was broken.
The good parts was the lore and the letting.

Playing a game with good friends who aren't spergs and have at least some creativity or intelligence or in some cases, encyclopedic knowledge of the lore, is what makes a game fun. Plus FFG40k system was inherently mathematically shit because it was just about stacking modifiers until you couldn't fail the roll, even if you were using a subsystem that wasn't inherently broken like navigating the warp or managing a colony. My GM homebrewed or handwaved all the bullshit and made it fun however. Also there's no denying that FFG wrote the best WH40K lore ever made.

Rolling up new characters is easy. It also hammers home how expendable you are.
If you're playing DH and Only War, sure. Another quirk of the FFG40K system was that DH characters inevitably became much more powerful than Rogue Trader characters in the endgame, even though RT was supposed to be the highest "power level" below Death Watch and Black Crusade, which involved Space Marines.
Rogue Trader is supposed to be about people who are already above the average grunt. The Arch-Militant is supposed to be someone who is one of the top soldiers/warriors of their homeworld, the Seneschal is someone who could be a crime lord or big time trader without the Rogue Trader, etc.
It makes sense that DH characters start weaker and end up more powerful, they're militant inquisitors by endgame or at least interrogators, which is leagues beyond a normal human in terms of combat power. Tech priests are also ridiculously broken.
That's not an intended feature though, and an endgame Rogue Trader and his crew are supposed to be chilling in a fricking cruiser deciding the fate of multiple worlds on a whim, shaping the commerce of billions of people etc.

The hell it's not, there are expansions for inquisitor roles, which have authority well beyond anything a rogue trader can wield. Kryptmann doomed entire solar systems with exterminatus to starve the tyranids.
The only splat that dealt with that was Ascension, which is universally agreed to be pretty awful since the game breaks down completely once you get that many dice to throw at something. Doesn't help that certain classes in it were mechanically busted as hell, like the Archmagos or the Vindicare.

The Tau Empire, in total, has around 40 planets. In comparison, the Imperium of Man has 1 MILLION PLANETS. The largest ork empire has 500. And so on.
The Tau are a literal fart in the wind. If not for plot armour, they would've been wiped out long, long ago.
That's all a moot point since, again, the Tau Empire is on the opposite end of the galaxy from where this game will take place. That said, you aren't playing as the Imperium, you're playing as A rogue trader with A ship and a modest trade empire of maybe a few planets on the frontier. If the Tau were in an accessible position, they are far and away more than enough to be a threat to the player character.

In terms of companions so far I'd say is an improvement, they seem to be more organic to the setting and less one a kind/unique/snowflake like in WOTR, at the very least they are including flaws in the characters descriptions.
Why are they always the "haha I'm so wienery girl types" aka "bitches" in these games. It's either that or they are quite submissive, or annoying as frick. Why is there never just like a normal fricking lady who is decent at her job with no "issues".

Since they are offering the option to have your RT to be a comissar before inheriting the warrant of trade, how fanatical and willing to shoot your crew will they allow you to be. Comissar is one of my favorite things from WH40K and I don't a comissar would become a neutered, easy-going xenos simp just because he's now a pirate
I feel like you're shoehorning commissars into such a narrow character type that of course it won't work with a character focused rpg where you have dialogue options and shit. The background is more likely to provide a set of starter skills and the occasional unique dialogue option, not limit your character to a cliche that just shoots the cast the first time they fail a fear roll.
I'm only talking about cliche was a joke, but the point remains that a highly trained *political* officer, chosen among other things because of his pure unwavering faith in the empire and the emperor would not suddenly become willing to screw over loyal citizens of the empire, or excessively deal with xenos just because he became a RT.

Chaos Commissars aren't rare, it's just that GW rarely bothers to mention the non-Astartes chaos forces in their shit, if at all. They're called Renegade Enforcers and they serve the same purpose as Imperial Commisars, down to the whole "shooting your own troops in the head to keep morale steady" (at least until 9th edition when that ability got removed now they're just boring units that buff units around them)
Those backgrounds will have to have a more significant impacts. After all, you can also be a Navigator or a Psyker.

Question for 40K lorebeards;
I've recently come to the realization that no matter how hard I try to deny it, Lawful Good is just my favorite way to play RPGs. I know 40K doesn't have alignments, but is it possible to play as a Lawful Good-type character, trying to make the world (or universe in this case) a better case, or should I be planning a different type of character because you just can't properly RP like that in 40K?
it's a setting about Orwell's Oceania fighting demon summoning Satanists and several Alien races who view humans as either a pest that needs to be culled or as food to be consumed in an eternal endless war, plenty of much more powerful people have tried to make the world less shit and it never really works out
at best I think you might be able to make your little empire within the Imperium of Man not completely awful, but I wouldn't expect a happy handing where everyone holds hands and sings kumbaya my lord
there are "Lawful Good" type characters in the setting, the kind of people who go out of their way to save civilian populations in times of war and try their best to avoid unnecessary casualties
they're pretty rare and are still xenophobes and religious fanatics, but at least they don't go around purging anyone who looks at them funny and keep the slavery and war crimes to an appropriate minimum
