06 is my favorite looking sonic game but from an objective standpoint its not very good. it has rather primitive lighting (resulting in the human characters looking odd) and definitely looks like an early 7th gen game.
Sonic not having a side grimace, everyone having front mouths that don't work, their long proportions and having the cast be mocapped was a mistake imo. Unleashed FMV was the peak imo.
honestly the only issue i have with them is how the rigs are prohibitive to expression, and that they never use side mouths when itd be appropriate. SA2 had center mouths and mocap, and honestly i like the lanky proportions

as long as the character controls work and are the same between the demo and full releases of a game, then the only difference is the number of levels and the diversity in their stage elements.

Riders did awfully critically because it didn't have a good tutorial and nobody cared enough to learn how to play. Also the trendhopping was cringe.
A lot of 3D Sonic games get more hate than they should because they suck at explaining themselves and they progress gate players in shitty ways. Heroes, Shadow, Unleashed, Secret Rings and Black Knight are all much better with a 100% save and an understanding of how the mechanics work.
This isn't giving ST a pass, though. Those games have a bunch of other issues and it's their fault players don't engage with systems.
This is true for every game except Unleashed.
Unleashed is a very easy game to understand, including the werehog. The actual problem is that it's boring.

By virtue of being a boost game there is only ever really one way to play the game. SA2 had a rank system but you still had different ways to tackle a lot of the context based stuff that would encourage a higher rank because the game balances level interaction with player expression.
Boost on the other hand is strictly anti player expression to the point the game tells you how to play it every time you get to a certain point.

If you want a good score, yeah. SA2 and Unleashed are both hallways, but Unleashed is even more hostile to players dicking around or trying weird shit. You can still dick around, but there's no chance it's going to go well for you.
SA2 also had plenty of levels that just weren't accepting anything short of the perfect run, like Metal Harbor. Alternatives were oversights.

Yes you do have to interact with all the use case situations (If that's the right word) but everything still has more than one solution. You can skip the loops, spin dash jump to the top handle of the rocket, destroy the jets etc but there's never only just one way to handle that and that's on Metal Harbor which is considered the most rigid of the stages

And she was created with the same idea behind Shadow to make a character just as cool and strong as Sonic, so she ends up suffocating other characters that are more popular than her(Knuckles, Tails, Amy) when given the spotlight.
And to make things worse, she doesn't have any kind of relationship with characters that aren't Sonic, Rouge on the other hand has interacted more with the rest of the cast so she fits better as part of the group, it's why she ends up in stuff like Prime.
They should have never put these conditions on these characters. It's so hard to justify these characters doing anything as a group, Knux is gem watching, Silver is in the future, Blaze is in a AU, Team dark are self interested, Chaotix are detectives after money.
Legit only Sonic tails and Amy have any reason to hang together regularly

The irony about Shadow is that he could've been a great foil to Sonic if they didn't give the former that whole brooding tragic hero backstory. Shadow had a lot of smarm in Adventure 2 and was still all business, doing what it takes to get the job done. He could've been a great anti hero if he actually kept that personality as a way to butt heads with Sonic since their approach to problems would be different and conflicting. Instead Shadow treats Sonic as some dude he knows and vice versa and in outside media like comics or tv shows, Shadow's just there and has nothing of value to contribute other than he's ruder Sonic.
Then again I always felt Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were more than enough of a dynamic to have some interesting gameplay and scenarios.

The thing that made people like Shadow beyond just superficial shit like his design and powers was his development.
