      How much nobody knows.
Rootkit operates on ring 0 access to your PC. So it can access all data, including hardware level (make changes on OC etc). It access everything (current and cache memory) on your PC without your permission.

It has full access to your PC as stated in wiki.

The kernel anticheat is not at fault there. The system was compromised the moment the attacker gained access to it. The way he conducted the attack could be done with literally any other driver that was installed on the system at the time.

          >Genshin Impact does not need to be installed on a victim’s device for this to work; the use of this driver is independent of the game

i stand corrected infosec anon, my dumbass thought that the ransomware would target genshin players specifically
it's still pretty fascinating how ransomware authors use these drivers to compromise computers though, given that nprotect is written by asiatics it's probably vulnerable

do we really need kernel level anticheats? your average anticheat will cull 90% of the dipshits running around firing helicopters at people and the people who pay for kernel level hacks and play in a way to avoid suspicion should be allowed to do what they want.

Other anon is completely right, even non-competitive, co-op games have invasive anti-cheats these days, it's purely to sell MTX, otherwise people would just mod them in.

So what is the deal with this anti-cheat?
I know it's "kernel level access" or whatever, but what does that actually mean?
I've never played a game with nProtect so i haven't bothered educating myself on the issue. It wasn't until recently i learned that EAC is also "kernel level". How is nProtect worse than EAC? If at all

Aren't regular anti-cheats just as able to get your data? As far as I understand it the main thing about kernel ones is they could frick up your PC hard if maliciously used.
    t. coped myself into being fine with them (except Vanguard) to play with a chick

It really depends on the anti-cheat and how much you trust the devs. Valve for example only verifies that nothing in the game's memory is modified by another program, or that other programs can't access the game memory easily.
There's intrusive AC like the one you'll find on league sites like ESEA or Faceit for CS where those are willing to crawl your PC for cheat traces, or take random screenshots when your game is running to see if you're running wallhacks or something but I think it fell out of flavor these days.
In the end it's always a cat-n-mouse game, but it's a real fricking red flag when the game is a co-op only shooter.

Ask yourself what kind of stuff a regular program can do on your computer and you have your answer. The rest depends on how paranoid you are.
There's also a lot of parties interested in whether these programs do something nefarious (be it independent researchers or even cheat developers) so if it's actually the case then at some point someone will find it and document it.
