After 8600 hours playing ARK, the best PvP i've ever experienced was on PvE servers using the tribe war mechanic to set up friendly battles with no real stakes besides bragging rights and whatever loot i decide to set as the prize.

That's one way to do escort mission. Other game let you tell the NPC to wait in place, so you can go ahead and deal with the threat at your own leisure. However, I think the fun of escort mission is to deal with immediate danger and managing threat priority on the fly.

Set protagonists are always better than blank-slate stand ins. You are legitimately not achieving anything in your game by making the Orc look like a monster version of your real life self. It's not going to increase your immersion or roleplay, it's a waste of time. You roleplay by making choices in the game or choosing how to approach situations, and you can do that with a set protagonist.
I genuinely consider TF2 and Halo 3 peak multiplayer. both had a high focus of sociability and connecting with people for shenanigans

I have to agree. I miss the times when PC multiplayer games had a server browser of dedicated servers instead of the modern way of matchmaking. The ability to host and join servers meant that everyone could find their people and a lot of servers hosted modded maps and shit. I remember playing on a Battlefield 1942 server back in the day, it was the Berlin map but infantry only. On this server however, there was a specific way to glitch through a building and go out of the map bounds without dying. Once you got far enough, there was a plane you could pilot for bombing. One of the server regulars taught me how to get the plane and it is one of my most memorable multiplayer experiences.
You just don't get that anymore with matchmaking. It's all set up and manufactured by the developers with season passes and daily missions that FOMO people into playing certain modes/classes/whatever for a little reward. There's no sense of overall camaraderie. No finally beating that player that wiped the floor with you on the server you play on. Damn the state of modern multiplayer shooters sucks to me. I mostly stopped playing them altogether.

That's one way to do escort mission. Other game let you tell the NPC to wait in place, so you can go ahead and deal with the threat at your own leisure. However, I think the fun of escort mission is to deal with immediate danger and managing threat priority on the fly.

I have to agree. I miss the times when PC multiplayer games had a server browser of dedicated servers instead of the modern way of matchmaking. The ability to host and join servers meant that everyone could find their people and a lot of servers hosted modded maps and shit. I remember playing on a Battlefield 1942 server back in the day, it was the Berlin map but infantry only. On this server however, there was a specific way to glitch through a building and go out of the map bounds without dying. Once you got far enough, there was a plane you could pilot for bombing. One of the server regulars taught me how to get the plane and it is one of my most memorable multiplayer experiences.
You just don't get that anymore with matchmaking. It's all set up and manufactured by the developers with season passes and daily missions that FOMO people into playing certain modes/classes/whatever for a little reward. There's no sense of overall camaraderie. No finally beating that player that wiped the floor with you on the server you play on. Damn the state of modern multiplayer shooters sucks to me. I mostly stopped playing them altogether.

The worst Bayonetta is 2 but it's still a really good game, just like a 7.5/10. 1 is an 8.5 (should be a 9 but it has maybe 2 hours and change of "that part" moments throughout its runtime) and both 3 & Origins are 8/10s. Wonderful 101 is better than all the Bayonettas, and Transformers Devastation is better than W101.

Substitute this scenario with somebody addicted to alcohol and other hard drugs and they wouldn't be able to do it. That's a real addiction.
