The idea that only people approved by Nintendo or Sega could publish games is laughable when you see today's reality where people can make games and publish them themselves on their own websites. Digital media was also a revolution, it took away the power of the big corporations that controlled production, distribution, and the big retailers, and gave power to devs, no wonder if you look at the big hits of recent years, you'll find a plethora of indie games.

I got an NES in '89 and have been playing ever since. I don't think games are the best they've ever been, but this is definitely one of the best eras I've lived through. Console AAA gaming is dead, but indie and AA devs are doing amazing work right now.
Nothing will ever match the 90s, but that's not a fault of modern developers. The medium was so young, and technology was moving so fast, such that every 3 - 5 years you were seeing things that seemed literally impossible just a few years prior. The medium is way too mature and the technology is way too advanced to ever replicate that era, but games today are on the whole a lot more stable, content-rich and playable than they were when I was a kid, objectively. Kids who talk about that era with rose-colored glasses very clearly didn't live through it, and don't appreciate how much absolute garbage was coming out in between the beloved masterpieces.

Newer games are simply inferior to the best the past had to offer.
There's way less passion put into making games nowadays, and while indies offer a stopgap they don't have the talent or maybe budget to produce games as good as the best ones we had way back in the day, specially since they often do cop out shit like making the games have "roguelike" elements, and the least said about survival crafting slop the better.
