As someone who has around 200 games across the original Xbox, 360 and Xbone I can say that this sucks. Not because the SeX has any redeeming features, but solely because every time $ony has a clear advantage they start raping the shit out of their customers. Sony did their market research for fricking their customers in the ass. Without Microsoft testing out such brilliant ideas like paying to use your online, Sony will have to take the first steps themself.

It's less about Microsoft being virtuous and more about Sony having no real competition. They've already massively increased the price of Playstation Plus, been threatening to make their consoles paperweights with CMOS and pushing hard for GAAS. Then you've got the historical issues like Rootkits on CDs, proprietary storage at the expense of everything else (rip Vita), YLOD failure rates, pisspoor security for PSN, the lawsuits over Linux and Remote Play etc.
As counter-intuitive as it sounds Xbox dying will be bad for Playstation fans because they Sony be granted a monopoly on HD console games. Sure Nintendo is still out there, but ever since they started the "blue ocean" strategy they haven't been a competitor in the traditional sense.
Same, I tapped out once the current generation started. I was an idiort until last gen because I liked having physical copies but unless Sony fixes CMOS on the PS5 I doubt I'll bother picking one up. Especially when the only 1st party game they have that I'm interested in is Gran Turismo 7.
Micro$oft gave you one free patch, then started charging. Whether it be for freeLC or just bug fixes, it was always bullshit. They also pushed Bethesda to increase the price for DLC like horse armor so they could get a larger cut. Despite this blatant frickery I will say that I did appreciate how games on 360 didn't require an install or encourage lengthy patches at the time. Buying RDR or GT5 and having to wait 45 minutes for it to install sucked.

As as PCMR who used to be a Sony Pony, the console market will suffer due to Xbox leaving. Sony will rest on their laurels even more than they already are.
Xbox killed itself. It has no one to blame but their own dudes. Trying to kill the used game market in 2013. Trying to force the console to dial home and be always online forever, so you couldn’t even play your single player game by yourself if you didn’t have an internet connection. Releasing the XBONE as underpowered, games couldn’t even do 1080p. Now this new generation, they don’t put the Series X games on the physical discs. They put the last gen version on the Series X discs and just have the console download the SeX version from the internet. Refused blu-rays in the Xbone era so games were coming on 2 discs. Pushed game pass as the future, to make a brand new generation get comfortable with the literal game expression “You will own nothing and like it.” I mean, should I bother to even go on? Because there’s more, but I think I’ve proved my point. Microsoft is as anti-consumer and evil as it gets. They don’t give a frick that you love video games. They can’t even make first party games, all they know how to do is buy out already successful studios and then suck them dry. They are the video gaming equivalent of parasites. Frick Microsoft, they deserve to fail. They actively hate you and they don’t even hide it.

And let’s not forget this little beauty: In the days of Left 4 Dead 2, Valve at some point released some DLC for the game, and they gave it away for free. When they tried to give the update to Xbox users for free, Microsoft told them that’s not allowed. Microsoft told Valve you HAVE to charge the users for this, or else you can’t release it on the 360. So on PC, you got a free update, on 360 Microsoft forced you to pay.
Not to mention, during the days of the PS2 and OG Xbox when buying a DVD player was a luxury, and people were buying PS2’s even if they weren’t big video game fans just because it came with a DVD player, Microsoft built in the ability for the OG Xbox to play DVDs, but locked out users from accessing the DVD part of the console unless they shelled out money for a first party DVD remote control they sold separately. Meanwhile on PS2, you can control the DVDs and the menu directly from the DualShock.

After the PS360 generation there was no room for two roughly equivalent systems
PS4 gen was also the decade when PC came into the mass popularity that will never recede
Soon it will be three greater realms of gaming:
1. Playstation home consoles as long as they can last
2. Nintendo systems as long as they can last (may wind up replacing Playstation as home console dominant as Sony declines)
3. PC/3rd party realm, dominated by Microsoft, on Windows machines mostly
4. This lesser realm will be the PC guys independent of Microsoft, who use Steam and Linux, but they will likely suffer as a small minority for a while
I don't think the confidence that MS will beat Valve is warranted. Sure, it is a very real possibility with MS's new shift, but Epic has spent infinite fortnite money trying to kill steam and failed.
