FF Versus XIII is the king of this department. Noctis is still asleep. Waiting for someone to find his game.
As unhinged and ignorable as the tripgay is, this story is kind of interesting. Final Fantasy 13 had a 10 year cycle, and it made two sequels. It's so shocking to think about how much money went into something so fricking bad, how Final Fantasy has been mismanaged literally to death and how FF14 is only doing well financially because it pays lip service homage to better games in the franchise. It is insane to think that Super Mario RPG is going to sell more than Final Fantasy 16. Imagine how that must feel for Square Enix. Do you think they'll be able to cope their way through it?

It's the opposite. XIII felt like it should have been a 10-hour "Tunnel Simulator Leading to a Fight with God" discount game at best, but they realized this was a mainline FF and they had to cram in a discount Golden Saucer and an unused FFXI map for the "open world" segment. If anything, they should have pruned another game's worth of content from it, rather than doubling down THREE FRICKING TIMES because Nomura couldn't keep his Rule 63 Cloud OC in his pants.

Even with minimal profit, they would still be in the green. Nobody won quite as hard as Toriyama in that situation.
Wasn't SMRPG make to appeal to a wider audience than Final Fantasy to begin with, down to even focus testing Mario images of Mario in various degrees of RPG cliches?
FFXIV does well because it made a good story and copies wow gameplay. Not because of the callbacks.

XIII had a fantastic soundtrack. The game was a movie game, which we all knew was the PS3's strong suit ever since Ricky Bobby.
XIII-2 is an actual game and is actually both very good and very engaging. And finally, I never played XIII-3 but I have only heard good things from the people who have.

It's like a game of chess. You do a move, then the parallel dimension does a move. Rinse and repeat this process until you reach the final step and finally go to the other half of the game.
It starts on the game's title screen.
So its not a "password" you enter to access the game per-se, but it's a list of steps you have to do, that is the same kind of steps you would do in other games.
We already know ff13's parallel dimension is the E3 version of the game, Versus XIII is located elsewhere.
Is FF cursed? Even the Nep and Atelier games manage to make their playerbase somewhat happy, but FF always seems to have some drama or big issue.
Those are the issues of being an industry juggernaut / console flagship. Nep and Atelier are much smaller teams with a niche fanbases. The Senran Kagura devs would be there if Snoy hadn't murdered their studio.
The only "curse" is the self-inflicted consequences of their terrible internal engine development decisions.
FF suffers from the fact that every major installment is disconnected from the last ones making every one a total gamble.
This is made worse by the fact that they keep giving control of the series to idiots.
FF is cursed because it's made by the Japanese. They aren't innovative enough to produce something new and refreshing as they wait for the West to develop a better game engine or designs, mechanics for them to attempt to steal or copy.
