Wondering if this series is worth getting into, ive heard a lot of good things, but like the trails games the art style seems a bit generic

Not really. The fanboys will tell you it's gods gift to gaming but it's a mostly 7/10 series at best.
They Ark engine games (6, Felghana, Origin) are worth getting because they're like 4 dollars each on a Steam sale and i'd say they're worth it at that price but I wouldn't really recommend any of the other games. The thing with Ys is that it's pretty good when you're fighting a boss but when you're not (which is 90% of the time) it's really uninspired and bland and series is wildly inconsistent in quality from game to game. The RPG elements are also really barebones so it's basically just a very simple action series. There's a reason the series never really found a mainstream audience and It's pretty overhyped in JRPG enthusiast circles if i'm being honest but you can have a decent time with the Ark engine games for how cheap they are. Good music though.
only the ones made before seven, the rest of them are wannabe trails that are mediocre at best. if you play i&ii, use the complete soundtrack (its my favorite soundtrack ever). the sad thing is, there are few other games like them...
i should specify they are quite niche, especially the bump compat games and ark of napishtim which are my personal favorites. however, they are also *very* short so if you play them and don't like them, nothing is lost
Start with Ark of Napishtim then play release order, skip Seven and Celceta then play Dana/Monstrum/Nordics.
Nordics is really good. Looks like an early ps3 game though lmao.
Ys Origin and Oath in Felghana are both excellent, the rest of the series is generally middling.
I'd skip Ys 1 & 2 as they are very archaic. I couldn't beat the Ys 1 final boss because his speed was tied to my framerate so he was impossible to hit.
Ys 8 and 9 play like Trails games in that there is lots and lots and lots of cutscenes and talking to NPCs.
I loved Ys 1, 2, Dawn of Ys, Ark of Napishtim, and Oath in Felghana.
I liked 3, Mask of the Sun, and Origin
5 is meh but part of that is feeling even shorter than most of the pre SEVEN Ys games and being probably the easiest in the series.
SEVEN itself never clicked for me personally, and I have yet to try out the games that came out. I would say the series is worth jumping into. You might even like the newer games.
We need more bump combat games. Xak was great, and I have yet to play Lagoon but I've heard it's good.
You can lock your framerate to fix that issue, assuming you're talking about the newest PC port. Might have to do it via your GPU settings or an outside program.
ADVENTURE!
How is Dragon Slayer 1? I played through Revival Xanadu and it's become one of my all time favorite games.
Loved Xanadu Next, I'd like something else like it too. Give the original Xanadu/Revival Xanadu a try if you haven't.
>original Xanadu/Revival Xanadu
I kind of want to, but they're not translated though, are they? It's a bit of a deal breaker for me to be honest.
Every version bar the Saturn version is almost entirely in English, with only the opening and ending text scrolls being in Japanese. There's not much of a story at all while you play. Just know you're going to kill the King Dragon. To do so, you'll need the sword Dragon Slayer, and to get it you'll need to find four crowns throughout the various dungeons in order to open the dungeon on floor 10 where the weapon rests.
Oh, nice. I might check them out then.
Fun thing too: The MSX version has some differences:
>Different OST
>full color!
>items cost way fricking more
The series has no identity of its own, it's all trend chasing, very generic weeb shit..
It started as a Zelda knock-off for PC's almost 40 years ago, but look at where Zelda is right now, and look at the latest Ys.
I actually like the look of this, would be better if it resembled genshin impact a little less...
>It started as a Zelda knock-off for PC's
Are you just saying this because Zelda is the only thing you know that looks somewhat similar to it?
It would be more apt to compare it to something like Hydlide.
Nintendies think they're the center of the universe. Dragon Slayer was out before Zelda was.
>Zelda knock-off for PC's
Nintendard detected
Solid enough action series with RPG elements and great music.
The best games are
Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Ys Origin
Ys Seven
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
With Lacrimosa, Seven and Oath being the best ones overall.
>Seven
>best at anything
VERY subjective. It's easily the ugliest Ys game due to the mega low poly graphics. And the story is find 4 elemental temples, then visit them again. It's the only Ys game on Steam I never even bothered finishing.
Lacrimosa, Oath and Origin are generally liked by the fanbase, but Celceta is again divisive (personally I thought it was just okay).
In terms of overall game quality, it's up there in the series.
Nioh series has possibly the best combat out of any action RPG/soulslike to date. So that's an odd comparison to make.
How does the combat compare to other action rpgs? Does it hold a candle to something like the nioh games?
very different
middle of the series was dodge attack pattern -> hit boss -> dodge, the newer games are parry boss attack -> hit boss -> parry
e.g.
>that video
What do people see in this? It looks like fricking garbage. I don't even mind the shitty graphics, but literally any indie top-down action rogue-lite on Steam plays better. Is it just a weeb thing?
To be fair, it is a game from 2006.
Why does that matter? many of the best games of all time were made before 2006
>Does it hold a candle to something like the nioh games?
lol what, Ys is a VERY casual series, die-hard fans play these games on the highest difficulty and they're still too easy. it's more comparable to Mana games, not fricking Nioh (one of the hardest and most complex action RPGs made by Ninja Gaiden devs). even Zelda BOTW has more complex combat 2bh
Hmm i see, what I liked most about nioh was the progression, unlocking new combat skills and the replayability/ trying out different weapons, does ys have anything like that or are you fixed to one weapon or skill tree?
You unlock new abilities but most of them are just different flavors of "big aoe move". Nothing near like Nioh.
There are no alternate weapons or movesets, it's a very casual series like I said. Even the Tales of games are more complex (due to their combo systems). In Ys there are no combos, you literally just spam 1-2 skills like in an MMO, and then parry or dodge (both have huge af windows).
Try Stranger of Paradise or Wo Long if you're looking for something like Nioh.
it's an action game with no customization
See
It's more like braindead Kingdom Hearts.
It's mid. Beware of the raging Ys fanboy who uses this board.
>he thinks theres only one
Ive only played 1/2/Felghana/8 and I think Ys games are pretty frickin top notch.
1 is my favorite
>1 is my favorite
FRICKING BASED
I miss Feena.
Nah, there's only one raging Ys fanboy here. The one who kept posting every little incremental update to Ys X on here to virtually no responses, and the one who always pushes this series in every single thread and makes comments like these
Ignore the moronic samegay.
Yeah they're great.
Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles and oath to Fergana are fun
Yeah, it's good. The earlier games are similar in style to early Zelda games, though with more emphasis on action and less on puzzles.
Excellent series, can't go wrong with any of the games tbh. Disliking the art style means you should skip it however.
I dont really dislike the art style, I think the pic I posted in the op looks incredible, but it does have that typical anime look
I still can't get past the bat guy
It's been 3 years
Run around the edges of the room, not to fast to have a massive gap but not so slow either. Keep edging along the rectangle and you can get in hits and be safe.
I tried everything.
I have best equipment and I'm max level. I've never even gotten him below 75% health.
How?
I'm pretty sure my framerate is not super high to begin with since I'm playing on a pretty middling laptop
Well I dunno, suck less. You really should just be able to stat rape him at some point so I don't know what the moron frick you're doing.
>I have best equipment
Do you? I tried fighting him without the Silver Sword at first because I didn't want to get out of the mines and back in, but you can in fact get it before fighting him.
lower your framerate to 60fps
Merry Christmas, buttholes.
Ended up getting ys 1 and 2 chronicles, I managed to beat ys 1 today in a blind playthrough (except for the final boss I had to look up his weakness), I take it back the artstyle isn't generic at all, the characters have typical anime faces but they are all depicted so well... I knew I was in for something special as soon as I saw the title screen and heard the gorgeous music
Glad you enjoyed it tbh. Have fun with the rest of the games when you get around to them too
sorry anon, you're a weeaboo now
Yeah Dark Fact is a right c**t. Even with the right gear it's really easy to get trapped.
I got into the series blind last week and finished I and II so far. I had a blast tbh. Even if you don't end up liking it you at least get 2 hours of great music.
I should play VI after I and II right? I've seen people recommend origins, IV and III first but I feel weird about playing a recent game then going back to a 2012 game.
Origins and Felghana build off the Ark engine. So it's not a bad idea to play them in that order just to see how it evolves. Otherwise it doesn't matter too much order wise. Generally the series all stands by itself with occasional references for fans to catch. But release order is generally never a bad philosophy.
I see, then I'll stick to the release order. Thanks anon.
None of the first few games are super long anyways. Certainly a step up from the first two which were fairly brief, but maybe 12 hours until you get to 7 onward.
That's great to hear, because a large part of what I liked about I and II was that they didn't overstay their welcome.
right that's the other order I heard about. I think I'll stick to the release order just for the sake of the natural evolution of gameplay if nothing else. Much obliged anons.
Most games made after VI (which is most of them on Steam) reference it in some way (because VI was a huge lore dump), the release order is a lot more natural.
Yeah figured as much. The argument I heard was supposed to keep this lore dump like a "plot twist" that you would only understand when you finally reached VI, which sounded kinda dumb tbdesu.
Ark of Napishtim is mediocre and for a game that's supposedly ends a plotline started in Ys Chronicles it feels anticlimactic somehow so yeah, getting through that one first will save you the disappointment of playing a bunch of good to great games, only to get a meh pay-off.
I gotchu anon
Ys I+II -> Origin -> Celceta (IV) -> Felghana (III) -> Napishtim (VI) -> Seven -> Lacrimosa (VIII) -> Monstrum (IX) -> Nordics (X)
>I should play VI after I and II right?
Yes, that's the release order, don't listen to timeline gays, they're fricking insane.
Ys is nice and all, but what other games are there that are more like Xanadu Next? Ys and Brandish kinda scratch that itch, sure, but not quite.
Put Brandish on PC you fricks!
Get Ark, Oath, and Origins on Steam
Emulate 1, 2, and 4 for PC-Engine
ignore the rest
