From the first game, of course. Not only the first 2 games are somewhat short, but playing them by release order helps you appreciate how the series evolved.
I'm playing Ys Origins on the PC and enjoying it. I selected the girl and I'm playing on hard. For now it's a good challenge but nothing too impossible, but I know the bosses get insane later on.
I don't know how this game fits into the series and I also have no idea if the others are good or bad, but this particular one seems like a good distraction to me.
Origins is the very first one in the timeline but it makes more sense to play it after completing the first 2 games
Play Dana game is good, do play it solo and in hard mode tho.

I started with Oath in Felghana on Hard, and it was actually hard. Still my favorite in the series after playing VIII and Origins. Kino soundtrack as well.

yes you have to beat the game with both of them to unlock the third characters story

This game starts as Robinson Crusoe, turns into Jurassic Park and ends as fricking Armageddon. What a wild ride.
