Ys 1 and 2 are my favorites. Something about the bump system just does it for me
love me bump combat. I need more bump combat games, any recs? I've currently finished Xak and Revival Xanadu, when it comes to bump combat outside of the Ys

Is this game good?
Absolutely. I personally like it more than Oath and Origin, but all three are pretty good. 1, 2, and Dawn are still by far my favorites.
Oath was such a miserable experience for me on Hard difficulty with its magical powers (if I used a charge attack, I keep using my magic if I attack afterwards unless I stop attacking for like a second), I would rather play Ys VI.
I love it. Theres something nice about a lot of them being self contained adventures that dont take too long to finish. I'm up to YS vii now though and it seems way longer.
This is my only experience with ys and for a long time I was under the impression this one isn't very well liked? I still don't know any better but this game is pretty comfy, good looking but with some weird difficulty spikes that could potentially set you back anywhere in between 20 minutes to a whole hour If you frick up, I wish more games since then played and looked like this.
>and for a long time I was under the impression this one isn't very well liked?
Generally it's because a lot of people play Oath and/or Origin first then go back to VI to get more. It's the first game with that engine though, so it's understandably less polished and leaves a worse impression on people.
It's okay, I thought the bosses sucked dick. I played it after already playing Oath and Origin though, so if you go straight into it then you'll probably enjoy it.
VIII and IX were as long as Seven if not shorter. Seven was egregious in the way it padded out the game but the other games have less fault in that area.
You replied to the wrong person but 8 is objectively the longest game, like there's no arguing that. 7 is like a 20-25 hour game while 8 is like a 40 hour game.
all of the non-party Ys games are great. All of the party Ys games are trash
Every ys is good except for wanderers, snes 4, and 5, those are terrible
So what's so bad about 5? Currently making my way through the games, only at 2, but 6 is next since Origins/3 are updated combat from them so I'll want to experience those in release order, but is 5 really that bad?
>only at 2, but 6 is next since Origins/3 are updated combat from them so I'll want to experience those in release order
My guy, don't do this to yourself. If you care about the story at all (and you should) the order is 1 > 2 > Origin > Felghana > Celceta > (optionally 5) > 6.
Ys is a series whre the hero only wants adventure, and he keeps getting women.
Rance is a series where the hero only wants women, and he keeps getting adventure.
yeah and very worth its low price point
it's a bit... unpolished? in a few spots, not sure if that's the best way to describe it but there are a couple things you notice that it's the first of its kind that got ironed out in later games. didn't take away from my enjoyment though and i'm glad i played it.
early Ys games are all short and sweet
>keep hearing VIII is the pinnacle of the series >all the anons here saying its mediocre and padded unnecessarily
is it not good ?
I was planning on buying it after i finished origins as I'm enjoying it as my first Ys game way more than i thought i would.
are 8 and 9 that much different ?
As an ARPG, it blows everyone away except for Kingdom Heart 1 and 2. It's a really fun arcade game. As an Ys game, it feels dumb down for the modern audience. Even the president of Falcom admits this. Especially the boss battles, because back at Oath, Origins and Ark, you actually had to work for a satisfying victory. The games after that is just you spamming your special attacks over and over again.
8 is decent, cool setting, good music, some cool chars
combat is worse than the older games
story is worse than the older game and way too long when the appeal used to be that they were short and to the point
worth playing but not in the top 5 for me
It's fun, but if you're liking Origins you should move to Oath, which is like Origins on cocaine.
alright, thank you anons, I'll have a look at emulating oath before trying 8 or 9 then.

Nah the bosses sucked. Even the challenging ones were not fun to fight for the most part.
VI stands out in its level design. Oath and Origin are both far more simplistic and linear.
I prefer most of Ark's bosses to Oath's. Origin mostly had good bosses, but then had that one fire boss that takes forever, which also makes me not want to run Origin over Ark. Oath may have been nice with some of its human bosses, but that magic mechanic sucks the wind out of its sails for me.

Magic is fun when you use an external program to map it to a shoulder button

I thought the magic mechanics kinda added something to the bosses. Having extra air time and guard helped a bunch.
Ark's bosses were alright, I just fricking hate that frog and that one fight with the giant monster had a weird camera

Of the 3 nightmare boss rushes on this engine, VI is the only one I haven't beaten. The ernst fight requires you to master that shitty jump attack mechanic that is required a single time in the game to reach a superboss.
Bump

Yeah, its's pretty good.
My favorite Ys game by far
Im definitely blinded by nostalgia though
It’s good, just not as good as Origin and Oath. Definitely worth a play if you like those games though

That's because it is, and Seven's short compared to what comes after.

soundtrack is kino

Don’t care plus didn’t ask
Bump combat is based and Ys arguably peaked at Tower of Darm.
Uhh no sweetie bump combat peaked in Ys IV Dawn of Ys.
Ys II easily has the best ending in the entire series
>That post-credits scene with the roos
Kino...
yes, blue dicky best girl
But she’s a disgusting fur freak, anon
>fur freak
>has dicky anyway
when you're such a failure to contemplate it
I miss this graphical style, shit’s comfy as frick.
agreed, I played the Trails in the Sky trilogy last month and that graphic style is very endearing
Of the ones that aren’t trash like 5 it’s the weakest but still good
all of the non-party Ys games are great. All of the party Ys games are trash

It feels very cheaply made, it’s not a lol 1/10 kind of game but certainly not great

SEX. WITH. OLHAAAAAAAAA!
Also she's the best Ys girl imo
WHO GIVES A FRICK ABOUT YS GIRLS. YS IS ABOUT ADOL AND SOMETIMES DOGI. THAT'S FRICKING IT
I DON'T FRICKING CARE BRO, I AM GOING TO FRICK OLHA
Because damn near every girl in the series is top tier. The Ys devs truly understand women.
Adol isn't tied down by gay shit like w*men, he's married to adventure
Ys is a series whre the hero only wants adventure, and he keeps getting women.
Rance is a series where the hero only wants women, and he keeps getting adventure.
WHERE IS FEENA YOU SONS OF b***hES I NEED MY PRIMODIAL WAIFU
It's not my favorite but It's pretty good yeah
Cow love!
It was my first Ys. An impulse buy for the ps2.
I fricking loved it. The blacksmith girl was my sexual awakening as well.
The impression the PS2 demo left on me is probably the reason I eventually got into Ys much later.
well:
(L)eft or Right?

Frick, should have inb4'd that, well done I guess
It's bizarre how a song I never heard growing up instantly hit me with nostalgia when I first played the game a couple years ago.
yeah and very worth its low price point

It is good, but it is also unnecessarily padded and it would have been better if they had trimmed the fat to shorten it by at least 10 hours.
alright, thank you anons, I'll have a look at emulating oath before trying 8 or 9 then.

I'll agree Origins and Oath had good bosses but Ark? The bosses were either piss easy or annoying to fight. Frick that frog.

that is fricking insane lol, ys is braindead as frick

It's a good game, but Dash Jumping is the single shittiest mechanic this series ever produced and it never returned for good reason.
Its the first Naphistism engine game so its decent at the very least and infinitely better than the bump games.
>infinitely better than the bump games
shit taste confirmed
>Ys X suddenly full of shotas
What happened?
It's alright. It's easily the worst of the trilogy, as it's the first one. But still worth playing.
It is but not as good as Oath of Felghana, Origins, Memories of Celceta, Ys 7, Ys 8, or Ys 9.
Bro tried to sneak in Celceta
Not only is it good, its best in the series, peak adol adventure kino
