This is the Rikka deck I used to reach Master 1 just a couple months ago. I cut out the Therion engine because Regulus is banned. This deck has the same ceiling as the Sunavalon version, it's just non-linear. There is literally nothing in this event's format that can compete with this.

If you want to keep playing 3 Lily, you could use Reaper instead of Regulus. This is the actual card-for-card list I used with Regulus replaced by Reaper.

i blew my load crafing SHS/orcust and Gold pride this patch now im gem saving for unchained/rescue ace.
I didn't elaborate on that, but the reason why I play so many plants and not a lot of non-engine is because I want to always hit off Dancepione. I summon 2 plants, make Dancepione, then I play from there depending on what she hits. The list is based on a list that made top 8 at a YCS in the TCG a few months ago.
She searches any Plant monster on summon, so I imagine she's quite useful
Yes she comes up all the time. This build doesn't have an easy way to trigger Jasmine so summoning Mardel is the main way to search a plant to hand specifically. In fact if she wasn't a UR I would have tested playing 2 or even 3 because I make Dancepione every single turn 1 and she is one of the best things to hit off Dancepione after Lonefire while also being good to draw since getting her from hand to field is very easy.

What should Zombies look like? I've only played them with Vendreads in the Ritual event so I have no idea how to actually use their ED effectively
They have a bit of everything, the level 6 synchro foolishes a card + has recursion, level 8 xyz mills and special summons, links creature steal / punish GY summons.
It combos pretty hard with good hands but a lot of the time it's just doomking turbo and the deck is more vulnerable to interruption than most everything modern.

There's an undeniably massive advantage to going 1st, you can win going 2nd but even pro players who tracked stats during Worlds or DC ladder had stats that showed the person going 1st won like 70%+ of the time.

It actually is, that's how unfun Maxx C is and if I lived in Japan I just wouldn't play YGO at all.
Also, everyone acts like TCG locals are nearly as sweaty as MD that you need the most up to date deck. Most locals you can roll up with tier 2 or rogue-ish decks and do alright. I just built an Armored Xyz deck (which is basically just Shark Kragen but better), even getting some of the stuff in better rarity it was pretty cheap. I only had to pass on one card for budget and it was still under 10 bucks. I own more expensive decks also but like 98% of the cards in the game are like a dollar or under. If you're really a poorgay though you can play TCG 100% as free as MD on any of the sims. And I'm not excusing KoA being fricking israelites who need to update their product model, but TCG YGO is as expensive as you want to make it.
I go to my locals with my Traptrix deck and I get to play back and forth games with real humans instead of Chinese bots. There is no Maxx "C" mini-game, and even when a game happens to be short there is BO3 so at least one game usually plays out in a fun way. Everyone is friendly to each other, there is one fatass but he doesn't stink, he is just ugly. Everyone is playing rogue or tier 2 stuff. Only one guy even owns an S:P and he plays it on his fricking Plunder deck.
The only people who need to spend all this money on cards like Bonfire and S:P are sweatlords who want to win regionals and top YCSs, which majority of people don't do because for most people to even attend events like those you need to travel.

It depends on the matchup. Sometimes Zoa fricks, hard. Decks like Mathmech get absolutely shredded if you resolve Zoa. Some matchups you just need a big beater to do big beater things and OTK with White Relic. I've thought about cutting him sometimes but every time I realize it's not really feasible. White Knight is usually the better option, especially blind.

There are no guides for modern virtual world strategies
Silly, joke content creating Yugioh Streamer laments the lack of in-depth, serious, and regularly updated competitive guides for Yugioh decks and strategies. Honestly, I'm generally in agreement. I don't know much about other card games but it seems like Magic's community is much better in this regard. If you look up a how-to on a deck, you only really get some basic deck construction and maybe a few different turn 1 setups. There's almost never guides on how to play through certain hand traps, how to play into established boards, or even something as simple as running different non-engine for different formats. Side-decking isn't really a concern for myself as an MD exclusive player but the lack of it in a lot of deck guides is pretty alarming. Presumably the majority of games in a best-of-3 environment are played with side deck cards, but at most I usually see people just saying, "Oh Droplet is good this format, so you should side in 3 Droplet going second".
That's not really very good and coming a fighting game background is kind of crazy. For a lot of current fighting games you can find really in-depth play and counterplay guides, often involving niche tech and option selects, with matchup specific advice. Matchups exist in Yugioh, but are almost never discussed unless it's in the context of a singular blowout card, like an Ariseheart on field versus Tearlament or similar. And if you want to go more in-depth (And can stomach the company) character discords are full of people constantly labbing, sharing insight, and theorycrafting. It's night and day, and the lack of that kinda thing in Yugioh really hindered my desire to try and improve. As a result, I mostly stick in Diamond Rank playing strategies I find fun rather than believe are competitive.

I think one of the big problems isn't that learning material doesn't exist, but that most of it fricking sucks dick. Like I was learning how to play Silenforce, and most of the shit is just shitty subtitled simulator replays showing lines. Most of what I learned was from actually netdecking some lists to start and experimenting with the cards until I understood the lines, then took it to the shitty EDO AI to understand the lines beyond the turn 1 endboard. And for me that is fine, because labbing YGO for me is almost as fun as playing the actual game (I even discovered some tech I don't see in any lists right now in TCG or OCG on my own and it's actually decent). But I get some people aren't built for that, I also play fighting games in a semi-competitive fashion and I fricking hate labbing in the training room. I also think the real problem also lies in YGO formats being too fast to bother with making any in depth tutorials that just get outdated really fast. I see the same kind of anguish from another game I play, Stellaris when not only does new content drop, but new patches are constantly upending the base game's mechanics 8 whole fricking years after the game's release. It's hard to actually find guides that explain things like fleet comp and shit because it's constantly changing.

TCG playtests for decks well before they come out though. People aren't just sitting waiting for the new cards to come out when we already know about them from OCG. And PHNI is less than a month away. There were resources for Fire Kings well before the SD dropped in TCG as well. There actually are a good amount of videos for Silenforce already, just most of them are pretty bad like I said. The deck has been out in OCG for a little over 2 fricking months now.
I also only play MD, but side decking can't possibly be difficult.

We don't really have top players attaching themselves to their favorite deck and diving deep into it's mechanics when it probably won't even exist in 12 months time.

I've been playing since 2002, I grew up with the game. I can play modern stuff just fine the problem is I don't want to, because I find it boring. All you do is play 15 cards to set up a negate wall so your opponent can't play and they surrender. I choose to skip the long setup of all that shit and just say "no" with stun, and then suddenly everyone b***hes that I don't let them play, even though what I'm doing is no different from what they do.
I agree with the other anon that it isn't really a game anymore when most duels are decided on turn 1, hell I'd even extend that to say they shouldn't end on turn 2 either.
Old YGO is a lot more fun to me because of the slower pace. There's actually room for comebacks to happen, and there are more mind games involved with having to play around flips and backrow.
