My ideal FPS would basically be a reverse battle royale where everyone starts at the middle or one end of the map and their objective is to safely get to the other side of the map while avoiding NPCs. While there would be no friendly fire there would still be incentive to screw people over like pulling out with a vehicle immediately, or shooting a bridge so another player becomes bait for the NPCs.

Me and a buddy always rushed to try and get the vending machines just right to get onto the roof, or there was a spot underground where you could get 2 vending machines placed perfectly in a doorway so no zombies could get in if the server let zombies climb on top of each other.
I vaguely remember a shitty Death Star map where you could ride a tie fighter out into space which would make you damn near invisible in the darkness.

They have auto-kick for AFK. Some gaylords macro it but it depends on the server as well as some servers have skins, lootboxes, battlepasses etc. it's cringe as frick.
What I meant was that the map holds the zombies in a area while the humans fight a boss. Mako was the first map to do this but over time it's become basically PvE at this point.

I think zombie servers should always have infinite ammo with no reloading.
The zombies' knockback and movement speed just need to be adjusted with that in mind, it makes the whole thing so much more fun and let's a handful of humans win a map in they're good enough with their aim rather than just get overwhelmed by numbers.
There were a few servers that did that on CS:S and they were laughed at for being "easy" servers, particularly as maps started having bossfights or whatever.
Too many people cheat in ZE these days that it would be detrimental to have unlim ammo.

Never ever even thought about that nor even cared, I want the game to feel good while being fair, I played on a zombie escape CSS server where there was unlimited ammo with no reloading and I never felt like humans or zombies were particularly stronger than the other, it was evenly balanced and best of all, it was a lot of fun.
A single or small group of humans could hold the zombies back if they were good enough, you can't have that without infinite ammo and no reloading unless either the zombies are weak or the humans coordinate reloading, at which point the game is less about having fun and more about tryharding.

I forgot the name but the mode where you create your own play area to try defend from the zombies. The admins had noclip and would check to make sure you weren't making an "impossible base" kind of deal. Was fun as shit.

HL2DM was an amazing game, made even more amazing by the fact that most people got it for free with the orange box/in HL2 bundles, but they never even opened it one time. You could hop from a combat server to a puzzle server to any number of modded game modes and maps. Nothing like it will ever exist again. It's all so tiresome.
HL2DM Chad reporting in, it is (or used to be) a hidden gem with just how much you could squeeze out of the game.
Build maps that used map logic, puzzle maps that had absolutely insane challenges rivaled only by insanity of autists that would compete who would complete them the fastest, shoddily-made PVE coop maps where you shoot HL2 enemies. And don't get me started on modded and scripting servers!
I sunk more than 20k hours in in with friends, with at least 10k hours before steam even started tracking game time, and I would do it all over again.
Unfortunately steampipe update broke the game and it was getting progressively more broken over the years...
Its weird how tf2 getting opened to 100 player lobbies started the ze servers for that game. The exact same maps ported over. Not that I'm complaining. Wouldn't mind the nostalgia again

We kept using "give" to send drugs to some guy and then we could arrest him and since he had drugs on him the game would automatically put him in jail for like an hour of real time on the server. Turns out the guy was a huge homosexual and recorded every second of gameplay (I guess he got bullied a lot) so we had to defend ourselves to the server mods. I talked like a huge butthole with a fake southern voice and kept saying meow like in super troopers. We got banned in the end lmao.

I didn't get into this until like 2015 playing on CS:S but there was this one map that had an amazing song playing in the background that I don't think I'll ever find.
The map had a gray/cloudy skybox and the goal was to solve these puzzles and parkour, obviously, and I remember there being like a bouncy blob boss? or maybe like a geometric shape that zipped around the arena trying to kill you. The map itself was mostly gray blocks.

The one that's been my ZE grail is some other floating map which had branching paths, and I think maybe the paths would either disappear as groups went down them, or maybe zombies had some way of blowing them up behind the groups or something like that?

Same except I did it on Gmod servers. Also played TTT. Remember in a specific jailbreak map smoking a tunnel that leads to some kind of underground stadium or hockey field and picking up the m16 under the seats at the stadium and killing everyone. Worked almost always.

That was fun. A mix of running away and laying down traps. Zombies took like 1 damage from bullets, but they would suffer knockback, so people would have to camp areas and conserve ammunition. But explosives still did damage to the (albeit high HP) zombies, so clusters of minds and a well-timed rocket could take one down.
Zombies would one hit people and turn them into zombies, but some would try and parkour away from them, usually by using subtle speedhacks or pay2winning with +speed items

Mako had tiny changes each level. Now maps have entirely new maps as levels.

HL2DM was an amazing game, made even more amazing by the fact that most people got it for free with the orange box/in HL2 bundles, but they never even opened it one time. You could hop from a combat server to a puzzle server to any number of modded game modes and maps. Nothing like it will ever exist again. It's all so tiresome.
i don't think i ever played those maps but i did love HL2DM. the gravity gun made for some hilarious kills
there are still few servers with puzzle maps but no one joins them, I wish it was different because I loved them too

HL2DM Chad reporting in, it is (or used to be) a hidden gem with just how much you could squeeze out of the game.
Build maps that used map logic, puzzle maps that had absolutely insane challenges rivaled only by insanity of autists that would compete who would complete them the fastest, shoddily-made PVE coop maps where you shoot HL2 enemies. And don't get me started on modded and scripting servers!
I sunk more than 20k hours in in with friends, with at least 10k hours before steam even started tracking game time, and I would do it all over again.
Unfortunately steampipe update broke the game and it was getting progressively more broken over the years...
Its weird how tf2 getting opened to 100 player lobbies started the ze servers for that game. The exact same maps ported over. Not that I'm complaining. Wouldn't mind the nostalgia again
TF2 ZE was growing in popularity beforehand, 100 player servers just gave it a shot in the arm

Your story reminded me of a time me and friends had a full on tribunal putting us on trial because we were "role playing" corrupt cops on some takistan life server after we had gone through a bunch of hoops and interviews to be allowed to play the cop role. We kept using "give" to send drugs to some guy and then we could arrest him and since he had drugs on him the game would automatically put him in jail for like an hour of real time on the server. Turns out the guy was a huge homosexual and recorded every second of gameplay (I guess he got bullied a lot) so we had to defend ourselves to the server mods. I talked like a huge butthole with a fake southern voice and kept saying meow like in super troopers. We got banned in the end lmao.

I didn't get into this until like 2015 playing on CS:S but there was this one map that had an amazing song playing in the background that I don't think I'll ever find.
The map had a gray/cloudy skybox and the goal was to solve these puzzles and parkour, obviously, and I remember there being like a bouncy blob boss? or maybe like a geometric shape that zipped around the arena trying to kill you. The map itself was mostly gray blocks.

At the time, CS:S was a huge change for the game and competitive scene stuck with 1.6 so people stuck with 1.6.
Ganker is also bad at video games so it's hard to gauge. CS:S definitely had peak custom servers though.

Did anyone ever play the infection mode on Combat Arms?
That was fun. A mix of running away and laying down traps. Zombies took like 1 damage from bullets, but they would suffer knockback, so people would have to camp areas and conserve ammunition. But explosives still did damage to the (albeit high HP) zombies, so clusters of minds and a well-timed rocket could take one down.
Zombies would one hit people and turn them into zombies, but some would try and parkour away from them, usually by using subtle speedhacks or pay2winning with +speed items
Man what a garbage fricking game, frick nexon, but that infection mode was a ton of fun.
