what's with boomers reminiscing about spending time drawing their own maps when 80% of it is already laid out for you? what about shit like metroid where there's countless reused rooms and no indication for how much space you should set aside on the paper? i feel like nobody does this shit outside of actual dungeon crawlers

I truly believe this game’s reputation for being so cryptic comes from the botched translation and the fact that people today are playing it without the manual and map that came with it. When you look at the original dialogue, the manual that tells you the different enemy and location names, and the map, it isn’t too bad.

The only really questionable parts are finding the entrance to level 8, and needing the silver arrows to kill Ganon.

These parts are hinted at but even in the original Japanese the hints are pretty bad.

      Your Anal Nightmare

Just recently replayed LoZ and while I don't know all the secret burnable bushes by heart, I still have no idea what

No shit? Well I guess I didn't need the hint.
Besides, who hides a whole labyrinth under a bush anyways.

This game came out in 1986, and had that much incredible content and area to explore...
And on top of that a second quest with a few new game mechanics added.
I'm actually dumbfounded how Nintendo pulled that off.
I want to see what someone can do today with 128kB. Can they make something that good?
Pic related is bigger than Zelda 1's data.

Let's not get too circlejerky, we had 3D vector games in 79, a bunch of ugly 2D screens in 86 isn't THAT impressive

Yeah and those games sucked and led nowhere.

The wooden sword is actually optional. You can skip straight to the white sword if you know what you’re doing.

NES version is the best, but the GBA version is still pretty good.

Anyone ever done a three heart minimalist run in this game? I always get wall'd by the wizzrobe rooms in Level 6.

I’m not that good. I’ve beat the original Zelda once or twice, but I always stock up on potions and take a shit load of damage at the end.
