It's not a scam but it does look completely unimpressive, what I've seen so far looks like a mix of guild wars 2 + warhammer online.

            >but it does look completely unimpressive
They're doing what WoW did back in the day. They're looking at systems from other MMOs that all work very well and then throw them all together into one game. It's nothing insane or revolutionary, but when it's all combined, it's going to be a great game. Assuming that they don't end up having to cut a bunch of things, of course.

              Anonymous

It can borrow as many systems as it wants but if it doesn’t feel as good to play as WoW does it’s not worth it.

          https://ashesofcreation.wiki/Pre-order_pack_history

The game has been in development forever with almost no progess. It's still missing the most basic features like a class system, but the devs are hard at work churning out cosmetic cash shop bullshit EVERY MONTH

This is literally Star Citizen 2

            >And yet they're selling new exclusive "preorder packs" EVERY MONTH
Why would they not take the money when moronic fanbois are willing to throw free money at them?

            >The game has been in development forever with almost no progess
This is just objectively false. They started development in December 2015, and their progress has been really good for what they have achieved so far.

            >It's still missing the most basic features like a class system
The class system is extremely easy for them to make, hence why they aren't focusing too much on it. They want to nail the other foundations and backend systems of the game. 90% of the class system can be written down in a notepad and be implemented in like 2 months.

            >This is literally Star Citizen 2
It's far from Star Citizen. The fact that you are even comparing it to Star Citizen just shows that you are incapable of having an actual honest discussion.

              >They started development in December 2015, and their progress has been really good for what they have achieved so far.
6 and a half years should be more than enough time to release a fully functioning game. The current game still looks like a tech demo. They've repeatedly pushed back planned milestones, and there's no sign of a release or even beta test in sight. It could easily be 10+ years of development before the game is "released".

              >90% of the class system can be written down in a notepad and be implemented in like 2 months.
A class system will take a long time to tweak and balance properly. Without it, the game doesn't even have proper gameplay. You can't design things like enemies or boss encounters without a functioning class system. The fact that they're still using what appear to be 4 placeholder classes shows that the game is still in the early stages of development.

              >They want to nail the other foundations and backend systems of the game.
They wasted god knows how much time on "seasonal tech" when they don't even have core gameplay functions yet. Up until that announcement, I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they were just slow/stalled on development. But it's become clear that they're intentionally avoiding finishing and releasing the game in order to milk more money out of idiots.

              >It's far from Star Citizen.
It's exactly the same. Keep promising more and more, showing of new "features" while constantly selling new ingame assets for real money, all for a game that isn't even out yet and has no planned release date. It's a scam. Maybe the devs didn't start out intending for it to be one, but that's what it's become now.

Even if the game does eventually come out after 10+ years of development, everything we've seen so far just makes it look like ESO. Another forgettable, and particularly soulless MMO.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, no offense. I've played MMOs since 1999, been in like 100 different alphas and betas, including internal testing ones that required signed NDAs, and AoC is making good progress and looks like it has potential to be good. They have fricked up a couple of times, especially with the BR, but they are quick at correcting course when they actually do frick up.

They're years behind their original plan. They don't even have a functioning game yet, or one that even paid backers can play. And instead of working toward that goal, they claim they went and did something completely unnecessary "because they're so far ahead on development".

                >It will all be available in the upcoming alpha 2.
                >"""""upcoming""""""
Alpha 2 was originally scheduled for 2019. Over 3 years later we still don't have a date for it yet. Might not even happen in 2022 at this rate. This is the story of this game's development.

They have the potential to make good MMOs. Anarchy Online was very good. Age of Conan was great up until the endgame which was buggy as frick because they rushed the game out. The Secret World had an amazing world, setting, quests, story, etc. but it was ruined by the piss poor combat. Conan Exiles was also okay as a Rust-lite game and showed that they have the right idea about survival, but failed the execution.

If they actually pull their shit together and learn from their previous games, and avoid those mistakes again, then they could make something pretty good. I also assume that they won't be able to frick around with the Dune IP by cutting corners, so that's another plus.

          Anonymous

Age of Conan was amazing, but unfortunately the market for MMOs at the time had already begun its transition into meta-heavy, theme park PVE content and that wasn’t what the game was about. If AOC had launched in 2005-2007 it would have outshined WOW after Burning Crusade completely ruined that game by doing away with immersion, adventure and fun and replacing it with autistic sweat festival and alt-tab simulator.

FFXIV isn’t an MMO, and if any of its expansion “story content” were marketed for what it is: A single player game with online components, everyone here would be laughing at it. The story is stupid and nonsensical and keeps people away from actually playing the multiplayer content. It’s just like Destiny or any other gay false MMO out there.

How? I had to quit for two years after slogging through the pre-Heavensward story content for what seemed like an eternity. It’s alright as an MMO, but like he said if they tried to sell any of those ex packs stories as full single player titles it would be memed into oblivion

Well, I did like ARR content back then, I wouldn't do it again though since I already did it once but I think it's nice to sit back, chill and do some low level adventures once in a while. It reminded me of vanilla wow and just questing and exploring the world, I also did not know what the MSQ was back then so I was just doing every quest I was seeing and reading every piece of dialog, good times.

    Every new MMORPG will suck.
They will all try to reinvent the wheel with combat, turning it into gimmicky clunky garbage.
They will all try to sell as much MTX as possible making the game a glorified ad for skins etc.
They will use the same old recipes for "participation metrics" to keep you playing(tl;dr grinding instead of content).
They will all have ugly stylized graphics with WoW-tier art where everything glows or has spikes etc for no fricking reason.
They will all try to accomodate casuls by making easy content for them, which will drain the amount of players willing to do hard content and eventually it will have to cater to a playerbase of lazy casuls that hate challenges.
They will have to poz their game and add LGBT and non-whites everywhere because ESG.
They will all be declared "dead" 6 months after release as the playerbase shrinks and they add free to play options to trick more morons into buying mtx.

It's a dead genre, or undead at best. The only people that still play this formulaic garbage are barely alive themselves.

OSRS is still pretty fun in my opinion, I go back every few months and there's always something to do.
Wrath Classic might be fun for a month or two, the biggest problem with WoW Classic is that the server populations are so volatile because fricking Blizzard has a new controversy every few months and everyone quits or the factions become extremely imbalanced or something. I've had to restart on a new server like 4 times whenever I get the WoW itch for that reason.
FFXIV is just boring unfortunately and even after a few hundred hours I still have 2 expansions to slog through. There's lots of good stuff about the game but it's really hard for new people to catch up and stay interested in hundreds of hours of obsolete content.

As for upcoming MMOs, I'm still holding out hope for Tera 2. There was that GeForce leak that pinned the release window in Q4 2023, but other than that, nothing suggests that a Tera sequel is even in development. Tera was a decently successful game for a decade too with a really promising start (that quickly fell off) so I feel like they wouldn't just let the IP die.

    MMO REDPILL

You simply can't make good MMOs anymore because the way the internet works now is completely different from the early 2000s. Back then, the internet was decentralized and composed of small communities. They would form naturally all around the internet in forums and it was possible to get to know people. It worked the same for MMOs, there just wasn't that much information on them online, and the information that did exist was fractured everywhere. Players would go into games completely blind. They would figure shit out by themselves, talk and make friends along the way, and being immersed in the world was a genuine experience.

Fast forward to 2022 and internet culture is completely different and completely centralized. Streamers control and command armies of thousands of little kids and form their opinions for them, and even get early access to stuff. They all play games as a job so they will blast through all the content by playing 12 hours a day and expose all of it, taking away any and all mystery. If that's not enough, guides on shit popup immediately everywhere including youtube. Everything is solved super quickly and unless the game has an insane grind that keeps these opinion forming power players busy, they will just move on.

This means that MMOs can't really form communities anymore, and creating a worthwhile world is basically irrelevant because nobody will care about it, it's all about the endgame grind. Developers cater to this and produce the fricking abominations we see today.

I think it's theoretically possible to make a "good" MMO, but it's not very profitable to do so.

Big name MMOs all follow simple templates now. All important content is instanced, leveling is just a time sync before you get to the "real" content at endgame, and then everything you do is timegated so it feels like a literal job. It's easy to make a game like this and make a quick buck if you can hype it up enough, so that's what developers do.

Making a good MMO that breaks this mold would require a lot more work. You'd have to find a way to make balanced open world content (which can't just be zerged) instead of just instancing everything. You'd have to find a way to make content accessible to players before "endgame" so leveling isn't just a timegate. And you'd have to find a way to keep the game interesting without arbitrary timegates in general.

While I think all this is possible, it's certainly not easy. In particular, making good open world content will require MMO tech to advance in ways it hasn't for 15+ years. We'd need real dynamic worlds instead of just the same enemies/quests happening in the same places all the time. Most devs just dont' want to put in that kind of effort.

Personally I've just been jumping between old MMOs on private servers and such. Most recently, I joined some friends playing Neverwinter Nights EE on a persistent RP server called Arelith. It's got tons of custom content tot he point that it's effectively a fanmade MMO.

It's more that shareholders have zero reason to care about a company's long term prospects and every reason to squeeze it dry in the short term before selling and moving on. You're basically inviting a bunch of people who don't care about your company living beyond a few years to make business decisions for you. Like holy shit.

It's not. They are actually creating an MMO with the aim of every server feeling alive. Something like 80% of the PvE isn't even instanced. Here's a great video that sums up all the systems, and there's timestamps for everything.

What the frick is wrong with Ashes shills ? Are you guys alright ? How the frick do you justify those insane cosmetic packs for a game that does not exist yet ? Otherwise it's just going to look like a fricking scam, how the frick do you spend 6 years in development and (as they claim) hire a team of hundreds of people but you don't even have a game out yet, no systems in place besides the theoretical level and show a fricking map that you can make in 5 hours in UE5 editor and claim that's insane progress. You are asking a company to stop free income. Why the frick would they do that? The cosmetics they are selling are part of the in-game world anyway. They make some NPCs/bosses/whatever and then sell the armor that they have, so it's not like they are wasting any development time or effort. They're just getting free money from fanbois who toss it at them.

    >obsession over being meta and optimal in any facet of the game preventing any creativity and discouraging devs from putting any thought into it as well
    >addons are viewed as mandatory and you are expected to have them by the playerbase, especially if you want to pursue higher level content and there is nothing you can do about it
    >socialization is viewed as an inconvenience and in some cases (FFXIV) just an excuse to report someone
    >everyone by default assumes every random player is a rude butthole which causes them to act like a rude butthole and this perpetuates itself
    >since this is the bulk of the playerbase, the gamedevs are forced to cater to them, making the game more and more automated and optimized so people have to interact less and less

It’s easier to make a half arsed unity flip with 10-12 player lobbies marketed as an MMO than to make an actual MMO. There’s no talent in the industry, the reason why gaming was as imaginative and successful as it was to begin with was because suits took over the publishers and either forced out anyone who cared about passion projects or bought them outright. The guys who have been running the gaming industry since at least 2009 have zero interest in anything to do with their field besides the publicly traded graphs they hold on Wallstreet, because that’s where they come from.

Thanks to how they teach development at school now, all new developers come out ready to work with only market-approved, consumer unfriendly practices in mind. They have no idea after 4 years of learning the wrong thing what makes a good game.
Old developers are older men but you mustn't forget they were the virgins and losers of their era, and have a mentality of placating femoids. So they have adopted feminism and go to their twitters to virture signal for pussy. So they won't make good games anymore either.

Not that you'd know, but I feel like this betrays the fact that you've just lost love for the genre and are tired of it. Because there's MMOs out right now of every flavour.

      I feel you bro, IRL is gay and full of homosexuals. It's 2022 and we have no good online worlds to spend our time on ;_;

I wish we had a fricking Fallout MMO without Bethesda's garbage humor in 3 and 76

I wouldn't even mind a reskin of ESO, shit would have a lot of potential

But instead we got the garbage that is 76

Most of the fun of Bethesda games is the modding, so why would you even want that

Reminder. You hate MMOs. You will never like MMOs again. MMOs are not made for you. This is like if I spent the last 20 years crying that sports games suck now. Move on.

Modern MMOs killed the sense of community by adding queues. Instead of traveling around and interacting with the people you see on your own server you just ask in the hub city and queue up for shit you run with ransoms across multiple servers whom you will never see again.

They took out the ‘massively multiplayer’ part and just made a matchmaking game with a fancier lobby.

True, I remember the dungeon finder did not work on the private WOTLK server I was playing on way back. The most soulful moments I experienced in gaming related to PVPing with the hordes outside ICC while our raid was gathering and then our GM threatening to kick everyone out of the guild if we don't move our ass inside, then the same guy having a full-on nerdrage when some guys walked in with res sickness, 10/10 all these moments, lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die.

Design like this was always inevitable. Every multiplayer genre is doing queues now. You either match them or zoomers won't play your game.

If someone moneyballed a true to form autistic MMO that requires strong community skills and tests your ability to navigate the world to experience the content, it'd be just as dead as FF11.

I agree. That’s why there are no good MMOs anymore and there likely won’t be one for quite some time if ever.
