I'm of the opinion that gen 7 will be the last generation that can ever become "retro". Gens 8 and 9 have been such a minimal change in comparison to previous generation transitions that there's nothing distinct about them to be specifically nostalgic for.

          Anonymous

That depends on if you count handhelds, which this thread obviously does, fittingly I think Nintendo might be the last horse to cross that line

There is nothing retro about gen 7. Hdr and pbr look like dogshit.

            Anonymous

PBR isn't really 7th gen. it started with 7th gen but barely any 7th gen games actually had it. it came about with games like Crysis 3 at the very late end of the generation, a long generation. PBR is 8th gen to me.

THE 7th gen feature are global real-time shadows. COD 4, AC, GTA 4, Far Cry 2. the 7th gen look is basically 6th gen + higher res + bad motion blur and depth of field + real-time shadows that are either aliased or noisy or both. honorary mention: the Unreal Engine 3 bloom that almost doubles as a depth of field effect it makes everything so blurry and smeary.
the sun has to move in every open world game. night time has to look like dog shit because the most expensive feature barely pays off at night etc.

then there's the late 7th gen look that adds primitive ambient occlusion (thick dark lines in every corner) and lots of light sources thanks to deferred shading.

once you add PBR to this package it starts to look 8th gen right away. you'd have to really cripple the resolution to make a PBR game feel 7th gen.

            I disagree
Gen 6 (and by extension later systems with similar capabilities like the PSP, 3DS, Wii) are the last ones. As you say 8th gen and 9th gen are largely just extensions of the 7th. Nothing radically different.
For me, for something to be retro it has to be old and very different from what we experience today. Maybe one day when gaming becomes VR-only 7th gen HD systems will be retro.

The early 7th gen is markedly different from the late 7th gen. Even though GTA IV and GTA V are both in the "HD universe" GTA IV feels much more dated.

Gen 7 I can admit is retro, and has its charms. But I personally dislike it more than I don't, since it sowed the seeds that would become the shit we have now actively ruining games and game culture. Also Japanese devs really had a hard fricking time this gen, and tried every trick in the book to be relevant in the west to no avail, which ruined the perception of Japanese games for years.

          Anonymous

Well gen 8 generally had better graphics thanks to good art direction and smart lighting conditions. It also generalized VR games and casual streaming so it also has that going for it.
Maybe gen 9 will be remembered for its controllers and next to no loading times. The dualsense is genuinely a very immersive and the series one is the best xbox controller that Microsoft has put out.
I do feel that gen 9 will be more infamous than the rest, being defined by live service slop just how gen 7 had the middle eastern, brown and yellow filter shooter.

Even Gen 6 doesn't register as proper retro to me. They're dated but still at the cusp of modern gaming, and aside from graphics, not much has changed.
Gen 5 and downwards I consider retro though. And anything before the NES deserves its own name as retro doesn't cut it.

Literally this though, the games sucked wiener for the most part but had way more graphical capability than any other mobile gaming device on the market at the time. It came out when games were loosing their touch. 05, 06 were the least aesthetic when compared to 01, 02, and 03. If a good 3d capable handheld came out in 01, its games would be dramatically different.

Nah, you need to get a new one. These batteries have a tendency to swell when they have zero power for long periods of time. Be glad you found it before it exploded and killed you.

PSP batteries are known to do this, throw it out and buy a chink replacement. Yes, it's dangerous to keep it around.

      Anonymous

It's best to store it at a 70% charge. If the battery voltage drops too much they permanently lose capacity and can potentially inflate.
On the other hand, if you keep the battery "alive" with periodic use, it can last you a very long time. I bought the last model PSP in 2011 or something like that and it has a built-in battery. I still haven't had to replace it.

Prior to this I had a 2000, but it got broken beyond repair. The point I'm making is that the batteries can last pretty long if you're not neglectful for lack of a better word.
As for the Street, I like the build quality and the fact that it's beefier because I have bigger hands. Thought about getting a used original Fat model, but it has worse specs and I didn't know if it runs the later titles at full speed.

Excess moisture built up through humidity.
The only way to remove is to throw it in a microwave and heat it for no more than 1 minute. hot enough to evaporate and remove the moisture.

Just do it in a well ventilated space, the moisture will pull out any plastic vapors along with it.

Resident evil, pharma company umbrella seams vastly similar to Pfizer, moderna, and the other laboratories that are all in Cambridge. Half Life 2 has plenty of trains and railways, it's about uranium (Gordon Freeman) passing through plutonium (Combine), basically nukes. Where would you make and transport a nuke? MIT maybe? They have rails that pass through the entire campus that are entirely serviceable but not for public transport reasons. The game has a likeness of the aesthetic of the campus too.

C'mon anon, do you really think these games weren't created by the US government? Have you ever seen those games that have those descending loading bay platforms? The battery consumption (Cameron Sino for 100x model) of my PSP is way too high when it's powered off, it lasts maybe 3 days before discharging completely. Why? Screen on time is normal, something around 3-4 hours, charging times are also normal.

I still have my OG psp 2000. It's funny, what I am nostalgic for is the method of hacking it. I remember the pandora battery trick, and was lucky to know a fellow anon I become friends with who helped hack my psp.
And then years later, that major PS3 hack which made CFW easy as pie. The psp was ahead of its time in terms of raw power and features. I put movies, music and roms on there as a kid.

There is only 1 thing that kills that machine for me, and that is the charger. Damn thing was so impractical to carry around. And when the PSP battery drained, you would constantly have to reset the date/time. Even charging from usb was awfully slow. But anyways, yeah, great fricking console.

You only need a mem. card if you're going to hack it. Wouldn't say the screen is crappy because DS screens can deteriorate over time and I haven't seen that on a PSP.
      >One analog
Vs no analog on the DS.
      >The majority of the PSP's catalog are only-jp, anime visual novels

It got a frickton of price cuts over the years, but it was selling so fricking much at some point sony cut its losses and just sold them for $199 well aware that the owners would just hack it ASAP. The storage wasn't quite proprietary, every single portable camera used those same SD cards. Having one analog doesn't even matter, literally only SOCOM and peace walker would have used it. Buying an R4 and just downloading games to it was infinitely easier, i'll give you that, but homebrew (you meant CFW) wasn't an issue as long as you had a three digit IQ.

most people played monster hunter like this because the movement and camera were right next to eachother. I can see the logic of having the dpad and the stick next to eachother but it made a lot of games kind of awkward

        >Having one analog doesn't even matter, literally only SOCOM and peace walker would have used it.
Why couldn't they add second stick to PSP Slim, they doubled the RAM in this model, so Sony wasn't against major hardware revisions. And most PSX games after relase of Dualshock were also playable on original PlayStation gamepad, so forcing developers to make games using second stick playable on systems without second analog stick shouldn't be too hard.

Millennials were already defined before 9/11 even happened. You gotta remember the turn of the millennium and not have been an infant. Otherwise we'd be calling people born in 1997 millennials because they remember 9/11.

            >Researchers and popular media use the mid-to-late 1990s as starting birth years
suffice to say if you were born after 1995 you'll never truly be a millennial

            I thought it was "if you don't remember 9/11 you're a zoomer"

fwiw i was born in late 95 and i don't remember 9/11, but i do remember watching cartoons in the morning as my older bro went to school in the late 90s.

My PSP was an emulation Machine. I had like 10 different consoles represented on it. I was playing Sega CD games on that shit and was addicted to Popful Mail.

It should have been a ps2 portable and ps1 remaster device cause all the oc sucked
Meanwhile Valkyrie profile and ff tactics ports were the best games on the platform

The PSP was great as an SNES emulator. Irrelevant now with how many other options there are such as your phone or many dedicated devices, but back then being able to play classic SNES (with save states! Extremely convenient when you're on the plane or something) with buttons that seemed to be designed for that exact purpose was great. The ROM files were so small you could easily put a massive library on a memory stick.

Buy a vita instead, you can still get them for $100 and they're essentially a PSP 2.

      >Having one analog doesn't even matter, literally only SOCOM and peace walker would have used it.

most people played monster hunter like this because the movement and camera were right next to eachother. I can see the logic of having the dpad and the stick next to eachother but it made a lot of games kind of awkward

The 3DS had a second anaog stick as an attachment, iirc it even launched with 3U, and people STILL used the claw.

    >Bro and I bought a launch fat when it hit the US
    >Cost every dime we had so Ma got us Twisted Metal for it
    >Spent more time on that device in my childhood then I probably paid attention to school
    >By High School, thanks to my PSP, I had taught myself how to mod, how to use computers, understanding homebrew, code signing, hardware modification, and basic electronic repair
    >Created a Craigslist business buying and swapping electronics
    >Had enough PSPs occupy every limb I had
    >Collected rare and limited edition versions
    >Modded the homies versions
    >Wrote a user manual for CFW that was well received
    >Became the admin of a site I used to use before I was even 16
The PSP is how I ended up a programmer and why to this day I can live comfortably. I'll never forget that little device and learning about what it could do. The day I modded my PSP was the first day of me graduating to a real deal programmer and that knowledge has kept me paid, functional and happy into adulthood. Thanks to that little PSP I learned more about electronics than any of my friends. Thanks to that PSP I was able to help my best bud's dad get through two Afghanistan deployments without being bored. Thanks to that PSP I managed to create a functional business and make enough pocket change to support my electronics love. Thanks to that PSP I learned about an insane underground scene and learned about some crazy legends before they disappeared forever. Thanks PSP you were a damn good console and an even better educator.

You're very blessed, anon. The Vita got me into my passion hobby of tech analysis/learning about hardware because I was there at the right time as homebrew kicked off and there were overclocking plugins coming out. I spent a ton of time in ePSP mode too with TN-V when 3.18 was still the golden firmware before Henkaku came out. They're great little devices

I will never not have nostalgia for the original 1000 model. Mine probably won't boot anymore but I still have fond memories of it.

It will probably boot tbh. The biggest points of failure on these is the Analog stick, spring loaded UMD drive, and battery. In that order of likely failure. The main board is almost eternal. Screen burn in can also happen, but it's pretty easy to service.

This thread fellates the PSP but spits on the Dreamcast. Frick all of you for having such abysmal tastes.

The Dreamcast is essentially a nonentity. The PSP outsold it by a factor of almost 10. The Dreamcast while neat and forward thinking is firmly in the who the frick actually owned this category. Whereas the PSP had a lifespan much longer and contributed more to the modern console landscape by having features that became defacto standard.

Screen didn't feel small because the games were designed for it. Nowadays a handheld game is designed for multiplatform so the DPI is fricked on small screens. This is why theres a ton of complaints about switch games being unreadable or giving people headaches in handheld mode.

How long should my second hand vita battery last?

      Anonymous

3 hours, if it lasts any less than that you need to swap it, though even a brand new battery won't last more than 5 and modding in a bigger one is a hassle.

Do PSP games look any good on Vita? I have a 3ds and a dsi xl, and the ds games look so dogshit and blurry on 3ds in comparison that it might as well not be backwards compatible
