>22 year old console >Not retro
You're the only one coping, OP
To put that into persoective, Space Invaders was as old as the PS2 is now when the PS2 released
It's about technology not time, the difference between a PS2 game and PS5 is way less than a PS2 and an Atari game
I'd say this gen is the absolute cut off for "retro" and even that's kind of a stretch
I personally would definitely call ps3, wii, and Xbox360 retro at this point. And even if you don't consider them retro now, it will be retro in 10 years max
>ps3, wii, and Xbox360 are retro
Okay, this is a stretch. Give it another 5 years and new console generation and we're good, but 360/PS3/Wii were still getting games up until like 2018.
PS2 got PES/FIFA 14 and /vr/ considers it retro. PC got Crysis before their software cut-off. The platypus is basically a mammal that lays eggs. There's always an exception to the rule and it doesn't change the end result.

I'm older than the PS2 but I won't deny that said console is 22 years old at this point. It's almost as old as the SNES was when Wii launched. What's the cutoff here?
retro is an imitation of classic styles, old consoles cannot be retro unless as when released they are intended to recreate classic styles. PS2 is not retro, it is a classic console.
>Retro doesn't mean old. Look it up.
Definition of retro:
Involving, relating to, or reminiscent of an earlier time. >relating to an earlier time
A console from 22 years ago is somehow not related to an earlier time?
"Classical Music" refers to a specific genre and era of music, not "music from hundreds of years ago." in general In the year 2300 we aren't going to start calling Devo "Classcal", although they'll be as old as that point as classical music is to use now. Likewise, "Retro games" referes to a specific type and era of video game, it's not a shifting window of anything older than X years. PS2 games weren't Retro in 2002, so they shouldn't be considered Retro in 2012, 2022, 2032, or any other year.
The Nintendo 64 wasn't considered retro in 1998 but it's considered retro now. Everything before 2008 is retro because that's when the 20th century officially ended when the Great Recession happened and China took America's spot as the dominant superpower. This means that, yes, even the PS3 is retro.
Dumbass, the 20th century went from 1914-2008
19th century is 1819-1914
21st century goes from 2008- 2023, when all life on earth ends

The reason I start the 20th century at 1898 is because that's when America became a world power after they won the Spanish-American War, which kicked off the American Century. According to Brad DeLong's new book Slouching Towards Utopia, the Long 20th Century is 1870-2010. I haven't read the book yet, but apparently he has an economic reason for that. I define it more geopolitically, which is why I think 1898-2007 is the best span, since those 110 years are when America was at its height. I will say that 2008-2009 did have some 20th century elements to it, but late 2009 onwards is 100% 21st century.

19th century starts in 1819 because the 19th century is the Victorian era and thats when Queen Victoria was born
How tf would you know if you're not from the year 2300, music genres are arbitrary as frick and will be defined by whatever metric that future people deem appropriate
Some PS2 games released in 2013 and some Wii U games released in 2012. Therefore the Wii U is more retro than the PS2, which will now technically never count.
If you know what the Dreamcast is, you aren't a zoomer. The one guy said it himself. Therefore people born in 1997 who know what the Dreamcast is aren't zoomers apparently.
Pedantic frick. Dreamcast is peak millennial. You saying you remember the Dreamcast is like saying you remember Columbine. You don’t. You were shitting in diapers while your prostitute mother complained how she was missing her shows. You didn’t have the announcement over the intercom for the teachers to lock their room doors and turn on the tv and that class changes were canceled till they gave the all clear. Hell you barely remember the good old days of 9/11.
Nah. It was the Dreamcast >trivial to defeat copy protection >limited media size (even smaller than the gamecube) >only 1 analog stick on controller >trounced by PS2 2 years later. Sony's DVD player strategy really paid off
Sure, Sega was already battered from the whole 32X/Saturn fiasco (pissed off devs due to forcing them to port everything from 32X to Saturn, pissed off retailers because they favored some over others, pissed off people because low stock, got beaten by Sony in price). However, they could still have recovered. Their further frickups were the last nail in their coffin.
>it's retro because... uh... ENOUGH TIME HAS PASSED, OKAY? IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT GRAPHICS AND CONTROL SCHEMES HAVE ONLY SLIGHTLY IMPROVED SINCE THEN!
i summed up the thread without even reading it
>slightly improved
have you played any games within the last 12 years moron? or are you so stuck up your own ass in game design you think every game is shit
>nobody can ever define what retro is >autismos on /vr/ have a meltdown when something isn't from their childhood >still can't define retro other than vague references to nebulous concepts >they then proceed to break containment and have a meltdown here
Whether you consider it retro or not, 6th gen is at least the cutoff point to an era. With each generation, developers were able to make more and more impressive games while working within the technical limitations of consoles of the era. 5th gen was close, but 6th gen is definitely the point where the technology was finally available for developers to adequately realize their vision (many of which had learned fundamental skills from years of working with limitations). Outside of games that pushed the hardware from a gameplay perspective, games started putting more and more emphasis on graphics. Another distinction is the prevalence of online, though that aspect isn't as cut and dry.
I think 7th gen games could be considered retro in the not too distant future, but I still think it's of another era (in the sense that 1st and 2nd gen games could be considered another era from the more "traditional" retro range of 3rd-5th gen).
I remember my thicc PS2 stopped reading blue disc and had to replace it with slim version
The PS Triple is older today than the SNES was when the PS3 launched.
If your console has GTA5 on it, it's not retro
Stooppppp time pleaaaaase

retro is subjective and it only means something old, from the past
give it 5 years or so and people will call the ps3 retro too
Not even 5. 360 will be 20 years old in November 2025.
Everything before PS1 is now vintage, anon.

So, are you saying that we should have been referring to PS1/Saturn/N64 as "retro" during their reign? Sounds kinda 'tarded.
Black person classic rock stations are playing 2000’s rock now. You have no argument to stand on other than being a cum dumpster.
Some PS2 games released in 2013 and some Wii U games released in 2012. Therefore the Wii U is more retro than the PS2, which will now technically never count.
The console is 20+ years old and thus retro. Not all PS2 games are retro... yet.

Retro is up to PS1
No, I will not bother to explain, you just have a feel for it. Call PS2 and up some other shit, like proto-modern
>Released 25 years ago
By that logic the Atari 2600 wasn't retro when the PS2 released because it had "only" been 18 years since its release
the SNES was very retro when this came out and it was only 10 years old
just stop crying about it and let people make ps2 threads, /vr/
was the NES not considered retro in 2007?
Are games from 2007 as antiquated as an NES game was back then?
Outside of performance, frick no
>zoomers
/vr/ will look at this and call it retro
should recognize Gankerz standards
if it has hdmi port, it can't be retro
retro is not how old it is, it's about an era
Says who you massive coping Black person
That means the launch Xbox 360 is retro
Welp, PS5 already released so people can just say PS2 is officially considered as retro now just like game cube
Idiots will probably deny the entirety of gen 6 consoles being retro.
Zoomers don't even know what the frick this is
Guess I'm a 25 year old millennial
>25 year old

>I don't want to feel old, so (console) will never be retro
ANYTHING RELEASED BEFORE 9/11 IS RETRO PLEASE UNDERSTAND BURGER !!!!
People will look at OP and call him a homosexual
If you know what the Dreamcast is, you aren't a zoomer. The one guy said it himself. Therefore people born in 1997 who know what the Dreamcast is aren't zoomers apparently.
if you remember dreamcast kiosks and them being sold brand new in retail stores, then you're not a szoomer
Pedantic frick. Dreamcast is peak millennial. You saying you remember the Dreamcast is like saying you remember Columbine. You don’t. All Disc based system will be ''retro'' in 10 years.

god everything about this looks sexy
reminds me of the first time unboxing the soulful blue and white box
PS2 is literally 1 year older than the GBA which is considered retro.
It’s time to grow up anon……
N64 was considered retro by the time Wii was out
>PS2 came out 20 years ago
>PS2 emulation is still fricked

Atari 2600 was not retro when PS2 launched because it was only 22 and half years old then. And PS2 is now 22 and half years old.
PS2 is retro. It's now as old as Atari 2600 was when it launched. Or was Atari 2600 not retro in 2000?
