So what's the catch on this? Have you bought other refurbished gaming hardware/peripherals before, Ganker? How did that work out?
Will I risk getting a semen-stained Steam Deck because some fatfrick rubbed his dick on it?

      what?

how can someone with this poor of a reading comprehension read manga?

face it, tons of fomo steamies jumped at the chance to buy these then let it sit on a shelf for a week collecting dust and realized it is a piece of fad hardware and returned it. Now Valve is on the hook for ten of thousands of these things and has to shovel them back out the door.

        Anonymous

How does that make any sense to you? Valve doesn't buy back shit you regret buying. Refurbished items are RMA returns that are fixed and sold at a discount rather than being tossed in the bin, welcome to basic electronics industry functions.

Like the store page says it might have some scuffs on the case or something minor. But the system itself is repaired by Valve themselves and guaranteed to work.

However, the follow up tweet saying GameStop will sell Decks that they refurbish themselves is sus as frick, and I would not encourage anyone to get a Deck touched by GameStop. If you want one, get it from Valve themselves.

I bought a refurbished Wii U and New 3DS XL from Nintendo and they were basically indistinguishable from brand new. I imagine this will be the same, especially if Valve is actually repairing them and giving them a warranty.
What I'm personally interested in is if they'll also do sales on these when they do sales for the new Decks. If they do 10% off the 64GB refurbished models, that would put it at ~$287, which is cheaper than a Switch. I'd probably pull the trigger on one if that happens.

I bought a refurbished LGC2 at best buy for $650 after tax, usually retails closer to $900-1000 or higher.
Getting 4K, OLED, HDR, 120Hz, and Gsync on a panel for this price is unheard of and it's basically a new panel, very happy with it. I also bought a refurbished 3080ti for $600 a week ago and it came with a two year warranty, so no issues or even risk involved there. Just a cheap GPU that looked brand new when I opened it.
Refurbished hardware is literally just free discounts at no additional risk provided you're getting it from a trusted seller that will provide a warranty.

      >I bought a refurbished LGC2 at best buy for $650 after tax
You know the LG C2 is going for about 650 new at Costco right now yea? The C3 just came out so the C2 models are dumping in price. I saw the 42" at my local warehouse for 650USD new with a 100 dollar gift card bunbled at Costco. The 55" was going for 800 with the same gift card bundle.

In-store only? Never been able to find it at that price online.
Had I known they had a deal like that before buying my current one I'd definitely have gone with that though.
Happy regardless since I still got a good price all things considered.

Where'd you get the GPU, eBay?

        yeah

          Anonymous

          >In-store only
Yes it started Sunday. They still had 5 or 6 of the 42", 48" and 55" models left on Monday afternoon. Also not all stores participate in the gift-card but mine did. Still a superb panel. My desktop has the 48" gaymur OLED from LG and my livingroom has a 2016 OLED from LG with no permanent retention still to this day (it does get a lot of temp retention though but only if it idles on static screens for a long time, that is fixed in newer models).

Was thinking to grab a 55" for my bedroom and another 48" for dual screen on my desktop.

      lmao, no catch.

Being an e-commerce seller (who unironically uses his unit for work, yes, laugh at me), it's kind of insane how much the stupid box and some cellophane is worth. There's even a market in selling those empty boxes so you can put in like-new units into them and sell them as "brand new."

The catch is it’s made by known scammers who commit false advertising and fraud.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

well, the catch is that you're buying a SteamDeck that can't even emulate with as much power as a fricking phone.

    I buy refurbished laptops frequently.

Ideally what you're getting is an RMA'd unit that has been fixed and is essentially new. sometimes dodgy resellers claim things are "refurbished" but only official stores or warranty agents can provide such units.

      Anonymous

I'd be willing to bet these refurb units are the overstock & returns due to early/launch window issues with fans.

considering how many people were returning units due to squeaky buttons and noisy fans it would not surprise me.

          Anonymous

Yeah I just meant that anon is right, a huge chunk of these are probably just RMA'd and not necessarily used to any significant degree.

            Anonymous

oh no, they wouldn't be. valve wouldn't be selling them like that. if there were gouges on the case for instance they can just replace the whole case.

I mean you can't legally re-sell them as new, so there's no point in hanging on to these when you can sell them at a minor discount.

Refurbished is when you buy something pre-owned, most of the time they get returns after the first week or month for consoles with major sellers. With secondary sellers, it could mean from years worth of heavy use to brand new.
