Barbarian berserker does 3 attacks instead.

Get 1 level of warpriest and you get 3 extra attacks per long rest.

Ah, okay. Yeah, then haste the berserker for 6. I'm not interested in multiclassing right now, though, I wanna beat it on tactician without multiclass.

the beginning is a little ruff because spells missing feel like shit and you have so little options. rushing level 3 by killing the boss is a good way to get ahead of the exp curve. easiest way to kill him is carry 3 chests so you can make a blockade in the entrance and the 2 extra cambian cant get past it.
anyway early on focus on using bless with your cleric and magic missle for damage or sleep to end fights quickly.

For Warlock, take agonizing blast and Devil sight as invocations. Take Darkness as your first level 2 spell. Cast it on yourself at the beginning of combat and you will basically be unhittable. Devil's sight will let you throw eldritch blasts out of the darkness which is one of the best cantrips on the game thanks to your added damage modifier. Also Short rest will replenish your spells so you can use this strategy up to 3 times a day.

Respec from Warlock asap. It's the most booooring, and worst class in game. You get two lvl4 spell slots at lvl7. That's total. All your spells scale up to lvl4, but there are still only two spell slots. You can use short rest to recover them, but that's still just two spells per encounter. The rest of the game you're eldrich blast archer. A fricking Bard gets 4/3/3/1 spell slots! , and if you go for 'collage of swords' kit, he even get's two weapon attacks per round! It makes him a far better spellcaster, and a far better front row damage dealer.

    Just git gud.
Its very hard to learn the complexity of crpgs from scratch, its like switching from playing hearthstone to playing magic.
There are lots of details like whay does class armor mean or if this spells targets class armor (firebolt aka IGNIS!!! (miss)) or a stat save (sacred flame aka NINTENDO (miss)). To be fair, the tutorial doesnt explain shit and thats bad. Some general tips are:
    >do not move next to packs of enemies unless you have something/use a skill that prevents getting hit by attacks of opportunity
    >attacking from stealth = good
    >attacking from high ground with ranged spells or shooting = good
    >bonus to attack or skill checks = good
    >bonus to main stats = more attacks land and deal more damage most of the time
    >you can skip the dice roll hit chance with certain spells like magic missile or enviromental effects like cloud of daggers or wall of fire
    >YOU HAVE 1 ACTION AND 1 BONUS ACTION by default per turn, try to use both. Some classes or some statuses grant you extra action
    >if you get surprised you lose your first turn of your party, you can do this to enemies
    >jump makes you bail out of cancer terrain without takimg damage or save throws

  22. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

    >pick fighter/rogue
    >dual wield hand crossbows
    >archery skill from fighter 1
    >sharpshooter from rogue 4 with thief subclass for extra bonus action
    >you now get at the minimum 3 crossbow shots per turn (4 if you action surge) that do 20 damage each (with the basic handcrossbow)
    >you get attacks of opportunity whenever your partners are within melee range of an enemy

congratulations, you just beat the game on tactician

Being author's pet and being unplayable aren't mutually exclusive. Even if he never became a companion I'd say the same thing if anything else remained unchanged.
He couldn't have been a "main companion" and the walking mcguffin of act 1 at the same time so we're talking about a completely different case at this point.
Maybe he was a late addition, I don't care, we're discussing the finished product.

Playing coop with my friends for my first playthrough and I chose to be a Evo Wizard. We don't take a lot of long rests, so I feel really useless a lot of the times compares to martials at level 6. What classes can do more without relying on a long rest to do shit? Do I just push through until I hit a higher level where it gets good, or do I really need long rests to shine? I feel like garbage without spell slots vs. my friends which have 2-3 attacks per turn now.

You're a wizard, use arcane recovery. Eat ze space-bugs for ultra power. Use your slots for what you're missing in the party, with 2 martials it sounds like you're light on AoE. Use ritual casting to grant everyone longstrider, they'll beg you to not swap off wiz.

If no one else in your party is eating the tadpoles you ought to do it for them. The T3 illithid powers are 100x as powerful on casters and you can Fly freely + drop a bubble that allows anyone inside to use actions and bonus actions interchangeably. Your martials will love that.

OS2 isn't hard. It's the equivalent of cheap jump scares in horror games, it only affects you the first time. Crowd controls in this game are broken, a knockdown means that you will lose a whole turn to stand up, for example. So it boils down to who gets to strip the enemy's physical/magical healthbars.

I honestly wonder how much of that is true versus the player simply learning the mechanics over that timespan.

I keep seeing people speak about how difficult the undead encounter is before Withers and... its just not. You're probably only, what, 3rd level when you face this encounter and if you know what you're doing its trivial. The problem is when you *don't* know what you're doing - your party is all clumped up allowing for aoe damage and silences, you're using slashing weapons against skeletons, you don't know how to cover the distance between the opponents, etc. When you know how to play then these self-inflicted wounds don't happen.

Yes, later levels bring more tools to your combat-options toolbox making combat easier if you know how to use those tools, but if you're a moron its not going to make L7 combat any easier than L2. And lets face it, the average BG3 player is a moron.

too long didnt read, but game gets easy as frick after level 5 because
1-DnD is just like that, martials get extra attack and casters get level 3 spells like fireball at level 5
2-the actual big reason is the frequency and power level of magic items, you can get 24-25 AC at act 2, shit ton of legendaries at act 3 and items generally being way better than the level you get them.

          Anonymous

Always irked me that players don't get extra attack until lv5 when there's monsters even in much lower CRs that can attack 2-3 times.
Being able to hit twice makes something many times more dangerous compared to shit with only 1 attack

      Yes.

Also, the characters you're probably thinking of (Jaheira, Ketheric Thorm) are half-elves which only have a slightly longer lifespan than regular humans, 130-180 compared to a human's 80-120.

Honestly, git gud. It's a turn-based DnD crpg, so you HAVE to learn how the system works, there's no way around it. I haven't played DnD before so I had no idea what to do and how to make a good build.

I've learned the hard way. Tried a Fighter: Eldritch Knight, but I didn't know what I was doing. So by the time I got to the Balthazar fight I was getting my ass kicked (I was still lvl 7 by them, kek) so bad that I had to turn down the difficulty on easy and lost all the interest in continuing that playthrough. It was a good learning experience of what not to do though.

This time I'm playing a Cleric of Eilistraee and I'm way better at the combat this time around, may the dancing Goddess guide me.

Tieflings aren't demons nor necessarily evil. You are also able to bring her to talk to the paladins and still hand her over to them if you believe them over her.

When you and Karlachs minds do that tadpole thing you see she's speaking the truth and see through her eyes that the paladins are full of shit, if you confront said paladins you do get a unique paladins dialog basically saying they aren't paladins and you can't sense anything from them

once you hit lvl 5 the combat becomes trivial, which is past the middle mark of chapter 1 of 3
before lvl 5 you simply need to utilize all your resources (your bonus action can't be pointlessly pushing the baddy) and to exploit stealth properly
worst case you can put the barells of oil, spirits and gunpowerder you find around the world at your enemy's feet and explode (10 of) them to initiate combat, instantly murdering the boss

  66. 8 months ago

The combat isn't too bad if you know what you're doing. Once I respecced Astarion and got 2-3 attacks per round and had Sharpshooter and Action Surge, he and Lae'zel could clear most battles by themselves. Once I gave Shadowheart some spells like Wall of Fire, Insect Plague, and Fire Strike, things got even easier. That said, battles were still pretty boring because after a certain point, many battles started getting a lot of enemies and they just took forever.

  67. 8 months ago

If you are not having fun in combat, you are doing it wrong. My first playthrough, i was a bard, and i loved the story, but the combat was hell, and my guy was holding the team back. i started my game as a mage and am now just being a dick.

    Be creative in battle.

    Wet floor + electric
    Grow big + throw
Make walls and clouds of swords or fire
Sneak + spell + invis = enemy can't find you

If you are just doing big DMG, thats fine, but it will get boring soon

Yesterday I literally killed Aunty Ethel in one turn on my second run. Just walked in her teahouse and fricking obliterated her right where she stood. She didn't even get to teleport to the second area with the cage, no plea for life, nothing. Just max hp to dead in one turn. I didn't really care for this character, it wasn't until the encounter with him at the brothel in act III that I liked the dialogue options with him
A little while afterwards I decided I'd go steal the orphic hammer instead of promising him the crown in exchange, by this point the game was feeling rather repetitive and I was looking forward to finishing it just so it'd be over
Also, the music in the game wasn't very memorable and I usually payed it no mind, HOWEVER
Once I had gotten the hammer and freed Hope, and she was all "We need to get the frick out before Raphael gets here", I had figured I could just dip if I hurried so I rushed past the encounters on the way to the portal, but then this fricker poofs in and is absolutely fuming at the party
And then his music started playing https://youtu.be/xMo7ugWudCA, before my whole party gets wiped because I didn't take out the little towers he was siphoning energy from (keep in mind at this point I was easily dealing 100+ damage a turn with the two melee characters I had)
Easily the most memorable moment in the entire game for me
