is there any actual appreciable difference between the different rulers you can select during the rianvisa besides 2-3 side missions in the tree after the aelnar is united again?

      Anonymous

The main difference besides the side missions is that IIRC you can only get nazi elf mommy later if you picked to play as Lithiel, or Calasandur and marry Lithiel after it's all over

      Anonymous

Lithiel and Calasandur have more than 2-3 missions, and fairly special mechanisms (unfortunately using fricking state edicts, which are a pain to manage en masse). Lithiel also got a special government reform.
The religious guy got a religion, but it isn't very interesting. The military guy got something, but it looked lame. Both also have a bit more than just 2-3 missions

Corin is the "redeemed" avatar of a demon/disgraced god.
        Gnolls are demon worshippers.

Pretty sure demons and devils are different things, the infernal court is all about devils, demons are a totally separate thing

Well it literally calls Kazraiel and the others "Archdevils" on the wiki. That's how it is in D&D, demons and devils are different. Devils are hierarchical lawful evil types that try to steal souls and corrupt mortals to sin, demons are chaotic evil and frick shit up and destroy everything.
According to Jay apparently the devil/demon differentiation might be a Regent Court view on things and Devils are just fiends who follow the Infernal Court, demons are everyone else.
Deep Devils are completely unrelated and are basically a bunch of different species of mutated aquatic slaves lumped into one group by land-dwellers.

Shouldn't Agrados be a demon though since he's the father of monsters and gnolls worship demons?

                Anonymous

Agrados was a god, Kazraiel was formed from a piece of him and is merely a devil. Castellos defeated and absorbed Agrados and his power/portfolio but spat a corrupted piece back out since he bit off more than he could chew, and that became Kazraiel.
Yes, that would mean Agrados is dead yet somehow had an avatar in Corin, just like how Castellos was dead but still somehow had an avatar appear after the Day of Ashen Skies. I prefer the Khetist interpretation of gods, where they can come back to life if they want, just like Elikhet. A TES-like version of godhood where they can just decide to wake up and return from the god-place into a mortal body if they feel like it.

The orcs are actually good because Dookanson gave his life to defeat the second coming of Agrados.

Maybe the orcs left the Serpentspine because Dookan knew the great Satan(corin) was going to spawn into the world.

            Wasn't Corin Escanni?
If so, holy shit it makes sense.
The genocide and scouring of Escann was an attempt to snuff out the second coming of Agrados since he didn't know what form it would take.

It's best to just have a vassal, there's not really any human tags that encourage this, but Jaddari Mission tree encourages you to support your verkal gulani vassal to colonise and control the middle dwarovar at least.

I think a Castellyr - Castanor run that's built the marrhold tunnel and vassalised Khughdir would work well?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried one of the sun elf nations a while back, but got destroyed by all my vassals going disloyal during the first incident thing. I didn't know that event was gonna happen, so it was kind of due to the surprise, I could probably go back and do better, but I don't really feel like it. Might do Railskulker, let's me do serpentspine gameplay without being a dwarf. I haven't tried any new world nations, is Eordand neat? Who to form them as?

          Anonymous

Eordand is the formable for those Ruinborn tags that worship the seasons (or not) in the westernmost peninsula. Don't choose Gemradcurt since it's a tag that doesn't want you to form Eordand and is more difficult than the others.
Eordand's immediate post-unification game is really boring since it's basically just colonisation since you have no enemies. It gets better once you make contact with other Ruinborn or Cannorians.

Corinism doesn't only worship one god, they just believe Corin is the rightful head of the pantheon. They worship the whole regent court just like before, except Adean.

Should I convert or not? If nothing changes mechanically and thematically except worshipping some orc lover then is regent court even worth it?

Just pick whatever you like better. You don't need to optimize your religion to win a game of EU4

I think Corinite is the strongest one in Cannor at the moment. Honorable mention for Elikhand's unique religion that gets a free Great Holy War CB on everyone in the world + 2% missionary strength + a bunch of accumulating modifiers over the course of the game.

It's insulated from the biggest blobbiest empires by a huge amount of space geographically, except Lorent and Gawed which I already mentioned.
No need to fix it, it's supposed to be all split up and diverse.

if you meant "do I see a player expand into the EoA" then the answer is probably "too much AE" or "why would I do that" (because they're playing somewhere far away) or "I already won the game by this point so I stopped playing" (e.g. formed Castanor/BD/gigaJadd)

by "The west" I basically mean the southwest Dameshead, Carneter+Woodwell etc. Sometimes making it to Pearlsedge and Neckliffe. that's happened plenty of times for me. The Gawed one is rarer but happens every so often.
          >This neither, are you playing with Mythical Conquerors?
Either that or GC, yes. though I've seen Ibevar and Lorent take provinces without it before.
Come to think of it I guess Busilar also sometimes bites off pieces of Verne.

If you're trying to fix countries not expanding yet refusing to use the mode that helps them expand, that doesn't really make much sense.
Recently I've also started using a mod that breaks Wex's alliance with Lorent and adds distrust at the start of the game, that shakes up the empire a lot more in general.

            >Either that or GC, yes. though I've seen Ibevar and Lorent take provinces without it before.
Sure but if they ever declared a direct and successful war I feel like they would take more.
            >If you're trying to fix countries not expanding yet refusing to use the mode that helps them expand, that doesn't really make much sense.
Issue with that is that it's lame, a united Lencenor should be able to be a threat to the empire and bite off land, it not being able to do so is a failure of either EU4 mechanics, ai or something in Anbennar, my moines is on the first 2.
            >Recently I've also started using a mod that breaks Wex's alliance with Lorent and adds distrust at the start of the game, that shakes up the empire a lot more in general.
I'm testing a few scripted wars to make Lorent and Gawed fighting in circumstances more favourable to Gawed, but my code just ended up making Gawed lose their first war to Wex...
Another question, do you know why Nimscodd is so bad at fighting Bluescale? It feels like fumble the entire war and the AI freezes for months, I suspect it's because Nimscodd is a naval nation.

              >But are you sure it happned with a direct invasion and not Lorent taking land from allied imperials while attacking outsiders?
Oh, that's what you meant. Nope, I can't be sure of that at all, I baleeted my savegames recently so I don't have anything to check.
I do remember them attacking Wesdam several times though, since they own land in Lencenor it makes sense of course, and that's an empire member.
I don't see why Lorent wouldn't attack Woodwell, Saloren etc. as long as the Emperor+allies isn't stronger than Lorent and its allies... which often includes Wex, which means Lorent's strongest ally is always aligned against it, which means Lorent is perma-cucked by having the emperor as its ally and not being able to take advantage of it like a player. That's my theory anyway. And that's also why it makes sense to break that alliance, it's an alliance of convenience to put down Dameria, arguably once the Lilac Wars ended, or once Lothane and his Siloriel wife are dead, Emperor-Wex and Lorent are natural enemies.

              >Another question, do you know why Nimscodd is so bad at fighting Bluescale? It feels like fumble the entire war and the AI freezes for months, I suspect it's because Nimscodd is a naval nation.
You're probably right, AI is shit at naval invasions. I see the Hierarchy form sometimes but ironically it's never because of an actual Nimmscodd win over Kobolds, but because someone released it or it rebelled. And even if they die they usually survive on the Storm Isles because it's completely surrounded by a single sea province and AI won't take it. Classic tricky gnomes.
they tried helping railroad this lately by adding some kind of alliance between Nimmscodd and Gawed but I don't think it really does anything.

I think thats the issue, even a big Lorent might not be stronger than 5-10 Anbennar tags, or at least not from the POV of the AI that overestimates hordes of tags.

                Anonymous

Another thing I just realized that might be messing with Lorent: they always take Exploration+Expansion and love getting into stalemate wars in Aelantir, they don't ship troops over beforehand and declare on Trollsbay tags. And the AI won't declare another war if it's already in a war. Sometimes they even fail against the Chesh natives...
Also, taking Exploration+Expansion means they aren't taking Quantity ideas and buffing up their army size enough for the AI to be confident to attack things.

Escann is my favourite for both lore and gameplay. Love the idea of adventure companies setting up new nations and I find it a lot of fun to play.

Least favourite for gameplay is serpentspine. I fricking hate the dorf mechanics and all the disasters and shit. Lorewise probably the lakefed area. It's kind of a cool idea I guess, but I like the lore for most of the areas in setting. Actually maybe South Aelentir because it just doesn't seem to know what it is. The North has 3 clearly distinct areas but the south is just like Greeks, aztecs and jungles and it's always changing.

I think the Serpentspine would work better if countries could survive in caves for longer like they end up doing by V3, the issue is that requires even more special mechanics and would probably interact in a jank way with surface tags.

LakeFed lore is soso, I like it more than Serpentspine because it has at least some potential, tho I'm not a big fan of the 1444 setup.

Hey anons, which Dwarf hold do you recommend i form?
I gravitate either to Dûr-Vazhatun (the space Dorfs) or Orlazam-az-Dihr (the goat riders).
Is Amldihr even fun, or does it just make me blob all over the whole Serpentspine?

      Anonymous

Amldihr is a boring snooze fest where you release every hold as a vassal. Orlazam is a meme tag unless you switch to centaur military and the mission tree like Amldihr is very old. Dur-Vazharun is a new tree with some slightly esoteric mechanics but it's quite enjoyable even if it ends a bit abruptly. So I'd have to say space dwarves.

Any time a mission requires a damestear/relics province and my country isn't near an obvious perma damestear/relics province, I console command it, simple as.
Literally RNG, not sure how we have 4 or 5 steps of review per mission tree each with their own designated team, and none of them reject shit like this.
At least with "ruler is a powerful mage" there's Rite of Conception and Crimson Deluge railroading, or with "ruler has xyz stats" you can use transmutation magic to boost it up. With trade goods you're just shit out of luck.
Another example, the second mission in Konwell's tree requires you to own an iron/copper province and the closest ones are all owned by or blocked by fricking Wex. They want you to beat Wex and Lorent with Konwell at the start of the game, why? So you can invite dwarves to help you build a university. The other option for conquering iron provinces is to conquer the dwarves you need 100 opinion with to invite, of course.

Humans and hobgobs are the only ones that have that issue if you think about it.

Harpies are fricking jacked compared to humans and they can fly, so they all make great warriors.
Gnolls are matriarchal so of course a lot of notable gnolls will be female, and that includes warlords.
For goblins/kobolds/gnomes, maybe even halflings too: They're so small and weak the physical difference between males and females won't matter if their opponents are human sized.
And when it comes to elves, they're all magically gifted and live so long, so have a huge amount of time to master things, including the arts of war and tactics, so it makes sense more elven women might end up doing that stuff. Plus their role in child-rearing isn't as important because again, they live fricking forever
As for trolls and ogres, well they don't really have any famous warriors so your scenario doesn't fit I guess. But they're fricking giants so it's like the opposite of goblins, who cares if the females are 10% weaker when each one can pick up an entire armored man on a horse and throw them across the battlefield.
Same for centaurs, they're natural born cavalry and universally strong as frick, who cares if they have a dick or not when you're full of arrows.

...So that leaves what? harimari, dwarves, and humans?
Harimari believe a woman's place is in the kitchen, so no contradiction there
As for dwarves, all the major historical figures I can think of are male. All the revered Ancestors are male except possibly Quila who's known for irrigation and farming, not fighting. Goblinsbane is male. All the adventurer leaders are male afaik. Almdihr had High Kings. It's a bit tolkienesque that the women just aren't really brought up. Only the recent Pantheon stuff brings in female figures and they're just mythical goddesses.

So the better question is "why so many human/hobgob female warriors" and the answer is somewhere between "why not" and "samurai waifu" and "tomboy armor booba".

        >For goblins/kobolds/gnomes, maybe even halflings too: They're so small and weak the physical difference between males and females won't matter if their opponents are human sized.
This is dumb, the magnitude of difference still matters. Although kobolds don't have gender differences.
        >As for trolls and ogres, well they don't really have any famous warriors so your scenario doesn't fit I guess. >Same for centaurs, they're natural born cavalry and universally strong as frick, who cares if they have a dick or not when you're full of arrows.
Valid I guess? But the way society would be structured would maximized the amount of guys going into martial professions and pregnancy would remain a factor for both them and small races that have gender dimorphism.
        >And when it comes to elves, they're all magically gifted and live so long, so have a huge amount of time to master things, including the arts of war and tactics, so it makes sense more elven women might end up doing that stuff. That wouldn't lead to the level of equality we see, when excluding mages especially.
        >and the answer is somewhere between "why not" and "samurai waifu" and "tomboy armor booba".
Female hobgoblins man the artillery... if you think about it that means a miniscule amount of the army is female given the amount of artillery used in the period.

          >the magnitude of difference still matters
Eh, but if they're not using physical strength to win fights, the differences stop mattering. even the strongest halfling is child-sized, if you're a man a hobbitess with a pike is gonna be about as dangerous as a hobbit with a pike.
Of course pregnancy would always matter, for gnomes and halflings I guess that's a valid point still.

But for goblins I think sex equality actually makes more sense. First of all, they're a race of stunted evolutionary losers who survive by sneaking around, being bigger is actually a detriment. For 99% of their history, "martial professions" barely exist beyond setting traps, stealing shit, and running away. They don't have a hard concept of families and practice polygamy, so it doesn't matter how many women are pregnant in a group, they can just steal some more. And they have so may kids it doesn't matter if they die or miscarry or whatever. They're more like insects or rats than elephants or whales, they're r-strategists when it comes to reproduction.

          >That wouldn't lead to the level of equality we see, when excluding mages especially.
Well first, if you exclude mages, that's most elves. but yeah I hardly think pregnancy is a factor when elves generally live for an entire century or two before even having a child, if they have any. If 10 out of your 30 years as a soldier are spent raising a little kid that's an issue. If it's 10 out of 300 years it's barely noticeable. For a human that's like taking a year off.
A LOT of elves also simply never have kids. if their fertility rate is 1/7th that of humans like the wiki says, that's a lot of elven women who just never have any kids at all. So pregnancy never matters for them because they don't experience it. Even at a generous medieval rate of 6-7 children per women for humans that leaves elves at less than one, it's South Korea levels.

You are right, which is why all modern militaries don't physically train recruits... I don't know man, the logic baked in this statement goes so against how literally all gun-using militaries operated for centuries.
            >Of course pregnancy would always matter, for gnomes and halflings I guess that's a valid point still.
            More halflings than gnomes.
            >But for goblins I think sex equality actually makes more sense. First of all, they're a race of stunted evolutionary losers who survive by sneaking around, being bigger is actually a detriment.
If there is no actual size differences between the sexes sure, but if there is then that doesn't work.
            >For 99% of their history, "martial professions" barely exist beyond setting traps, stealing shit, and running away.
But surely they fight more among themselves than others? Viewing goblins with the POV of them fighting other races misses the point of their history IMO, this argument is like saying pre-modern hunters were egalitarian because there were no "martial professions", anything where strength or endurance is helpful would favour guys a decent amount.
Polygamy doesn't really change much because pregnancy is mentioned not because goblins would necessarily plan ahead and run a risk-benefit analysis taking that into consideration for any given female goblin, but because chances are that in a pre-modern society a decent amount of female golbins would be either visibly pregnant or recently gave birth at any point in time and has to look after the children.
            >they're r-strategists when it comes to reproduction.
Everyone was r-strategist in the past IRL.

              >Viewing goblins with the POV of them fighting other races misses the point of their history IMO
I guess. The point is they value sneakiness and conflicts between them are probably more like raids or assassinations than displays of strength or intimidation.
And much like with early hominids, tool and projectile use is a pretty decent equalizer and did lead to a way more egalitarian situation than other apes. (I don't mean sex equality, but rather strength/dominance not matter as much between males) in goblins' case it's like, doesn't matter if Zax Bigmuscles was born stronger if you and the boys all whip sharp rocks at his head.
And given that goblins visibly evolved to get weaker and smaller overall, that's even less reason you'd have stronger males imo. The advantage isn't significant.
              >Everyone was r-strategist in the past IRL.
No way, not like goblins. They only live about 60 years, in D&D they reach maturity at age 8, on a biological level they're just different. And they traditionally don't care for children at all, they straight up abandon them to do whatever. That's way in the direction of an r-strategy. IRL humans always cared for their children for relatively long periods, even before they were homosexual sapiens let alone circa 1444. Even chimps dedicate more effort to their children than goblins.

so all that is to say: goblins probably have little sexual dimorphism and what they do have barely matters for how they fight, so if there were some theoretical female goblin warriors (which we don't have) I wouldn't think it's weird. Boy or girl, they can all shank the previous guy in the back and take their spot just the same, they're not wasting half their life raising kids either

                >And given that goblins visibly evolved to get weaker and smaller overall, that's even less reason you'd have stronger males imo. The advantage isn't significant.
This argument only works if sexual dimorphism is lower in smaller mammals IRL.
                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rensch%27s_rule
                https://www.researchgate.net/publication/267830724_Sexual_size_dimorphism_in_mammals
For humans the dimorphism is 1.165, for primates on average it's 1.247 and based on smaller but not minscule mammals it'seems hard to argue for it being smaller than 1.1(table 2.1, don't ask me why the average is below 1 when the description says it shouldn't be), you could argue it could be 1.05 but Goblins are not THAT small.
                >No way, not like goblins. They only live about 60 years, in D&D they reach maturity at age 8, on a biological level they're just different.
AFAIK no race lives shorter than human if their health is good. Also I'm not sure if the rest of your statements are true either, Anbennar doesn't like to make any race just "bad" in general.
                >they're not wasting half their life raising kids either.
You'd have to make very generous assumptions in regard of how many pregnancies the average goblin has to go through and the length of time they care for their children for this statement to work, even if you say they have 4 kids(2 die on average before adulthood) and raise them for only 2 years that's already 10 years of child-rearing when including the pregnancy.
This is why r-selection is a weird argument, even the most charitable arguments where you have 2 year goblin taking care of themselves somehow result in goblin women being rather busy.

Well that is interesting, and that's a good point about goblin women being "rather busy", I guess if there's no sense of monogamy or families or responsibility that'd be magnified too.
So in hindsight actually yeah, female goblins really should just be shitting out babies nonstop, huh. Especially if it's common for a goblin to have 20+ siblings and half-siblings like the wiki says, yet their lifespan is still shorter and gestation period might be the same as humans. From that standpoint it is pretty weird that goblins would be egalitarian, at least before they modernize and lose the incentives to act like r-strategists

                >AFAIK no race lives shorter than human if their health is good.
Wiki says 60, probably based on D&D, which is where the 8 year old maturity thing comes from too.

                > Also I'm not sure if the rest of your statements are true either, Anbennar doesn't like to make any race just "bad" in general.
I think the fact that goblins are "bad" in general is what makes them cool anyway. Too many underdogs in fiction actually have some secret trick that makes them better. Well no, goblins are just genuinely stunted, poor, chaotic, weak little shits with basically no redeeming qualities, that get bullied across the globe and die every game when the AI plays them. And it makes playing them and succeeding feel more rewarding, and watching them get civilized and excel with technology a lot cooler. Kind of like the chromatic kobolds.

Issue is not if someone can become a warrior, in general just wanting to become one a lot can make some women end up in the army even if it's not "optimal", but the issue is that at the very top you would expect it to be sausage fest because when you factor out everything else from talent, training, experience etc. then what remains are the biological differences, this applies to IRL olympics as well in respect to race and of course sex.

Hmm, I guess. But that's assuming elven warriors selected for merit, maybe not the case. For elves, the "warriors" who got off the boat would've never seen a war in their lives. So someone like Istralania Warsinger would've basically been an extremely autistic LARPer. Doesn't explain Jaher though.

Yeah that's moronic, they should be awful at fighting.
99% of Elf lore before the Landing is awfully inconsistent.

It'd be a lot cooler if they were lost fighting through some dimension of eternal war anyway, rather than the plane of IT'S FRICKING NOTHING where they had to throw buckets of shit over the deck and conjure toilet paper to wipe with.

That'd make more sense, I feel like the naval aspect of Anbennar Elves is not even that strong, 1/3 of Elf tags even excluding Wood Elves are naval but the remaining part doesn't really car(Sareyand, Jaddari, Irrliam, Varamhar, Birzartanses, Ibevar, Redglades)

What's worse is the absurd general demographics of elves and goblins. If elves breed as slowly as they are said to there shouldn't be any remaining by the time 1444 rolls around. I believe that the remnant fleet had around max a million elves. If we say half of them go into Cannor, and half to Bulwar, then their numbers are going to more than halve by 1444- ignoring any losses in war (I believe the elves are immune to disease?). If we take the population of most of Western Europe at the time and add them together it's around 70 million, I think. The population *should* be much higher due to magic, but Anbennar's magic-based worldbuilding is fairly lazy. This means that across Cannor, a whole three-thousandth of a percent is made up of elves. There shouldn't be any elf-majority provinces. Elven nations shouldn't be able replenish any military losses. Every 10% of total manpower they loose should decrease their provincial manpower by 5%.

On the other hand, with how rapidly they breed, goblins should reach an areas carrying capacity extremely quickly. Even if half their offspring die, that's ten that survive to sexual maturity, producing another ten offspring in eight years. Goblins would have to be incredibly individually weak to not break balancing, because as they are they can simply out-atrit their enemies. If we say that medieval peasants have 6 surviving of 12 children starting at 20 and ending at 35, and that goblins have 10 surviving children of 20 starting at 8 in litters of 2 and breeding in 12-month periods. This gives a result of 4% pa. growth for humans and and a doubling time of 17.7 years, and a result of 10.4% pa. growth for goblins and a doubling time of 7 years. Remember that the time are exponential- the goblins can get 16 times their number in the time it takes humans to get 3.43 times their starting number. This is, of course, assuming no Malthusian limits- which wouldn't be present after/during wars.

I tried giving my input on the topic but I don't people are receptive to even the simplest of the mathematical modelling.

Ultimatelly I like to imagine that Elves would have 1/5 the maximum and average growth rates than humans have to match their 5-times longer lifespan, this means that over the course of an elf's lifetime the population would grow as much as a human population would grow over the course of a human's lifetime.

In Bulwar there are about 35-40 million people in V3, let's say it's 20 million in 1444, given that Elves are about 1/5 to 1/6 of the population that means about 3-4 million elves, so they would need to have grown about 6-8 times from a 500k starting population, about 0.3-0.4% annual growth averaged over 444 years.
                That's a lot of growth.

Sorry for the delayed replies, it takes a while to type 🙂

                lth.

IMHO, most of Anbennar's fundimental worldbuilding problems come from the fact that it inherited D&D's magic and racial systems wholesale- systems that were developed for use in TTRPGS, not hard fantasy worldbuilding. The sheer number of spells makes any attempt at rational worldbuilding impossible. If you can transfigure food why do units take the same attrition as basegame? Even if healing magic doesn't exist, can you just transmute necrotic tissue into something harmless? Why is necromancy bad in Cannor but harmless in Halless? If you can grow food with magic why isn't the population of the world, particularly in fertile regions, far greater than it was historically? Why don't more leaders use these very useful spells for more purposes? As for the races, D&D took Tolkien elves, ignored that they had few children for very solid in-universe lore reasons, and then passed that piece of worldbuilding onto every piece of media since. As I outlined above, it makes little sense in any non-Tolkein world for elves to reproduce slowly. Don't even get me started on the gnomes, who if they are so supposedly intelligent, and so long-lived would have easily begun entering some kind of industrial revolution long before the Day of Ashen Skies. What's more, this ignores that you don't really loose technology, you lose infrastructure. The Dwarves might not have the tech to produce muskets anymore, but they aren't going to forget how to produce gunpowder or electricity just because they left the mountains (I don't know if they can actually produce electricity).

AFAIK they clarified and made Dwarves less outright advanced, their rails tech rested on specific minerals and not a conventionally eletrified system.
Also it was only Kanzad that had early guns and for whatever reason they didn't spread or weren't as good as later ones.
                >The sheer number of spells makes any attempt at rational worldbuilding impossible. If you can transfigure food why do units take the same attrition as basegame? I'd like to think that this magic is simply costly too use.
Anyway Haless does have tons of people, the pop density is some places is far higher than IRL, which I'm not a big fan of as I prefer stuff to be more close to reality.
                >As I outlined above, it makes little sense in any non-Tolkein world for elves to reproduce slowly.
I would say that there should be a direct mechanical correlation between longer lifespans and lower fertility/birth rates, directly biologically limiting the number of kids long-lived races can have is the only solution.
I suggest putting at least a 5-10 year gap between pregnacies, but Jay stated there were already Elven siblings with shorter gaps(I question how this is relevant given it would be at most a few cases which you can retcon, but whatever), for some reason people think you can solve this issue by bringing up societal factors without understanding how insane the demographics of places like Venail could get if you "fix" those societal variables.

If they didn't have guns earlier they shouldn't have been able to resist the precursors. If their long-decayed artifacts are powerful enough to kickstart a technological revolution the ancient dwarves would have had to be extremely technologically developed in order to hold them off.
The problem with magic being costly is that people don't care about profit per unit, they care about total profit. If I get 3 times as much food but paying the mage to grow them costs two point five times my farm expenses again, I'm still going to do it.
Divination should render surprise attacks impossible. Transfiguration should make inprisonment easy. Magical schools can't exist if magic is particularly rare, but the world as it is can't exist if magic is particularly common. As for your point about pop density, I honstly prefer things to be very different, so long as they're supported in-lore. I don't really see what the point of fantasy is if nothing fundamentally changes.

I think that this is all due to the fact that this started from Jay's D&D game. "The gods may or may not be real... but also the MC gets ressurected" "The godswar may or may not be real... but the magical cloud covering millions of square miles could possibly have a secular origin, despite it never being seen before or since". The fact that the setting wasn't preplanned, but slowly grew organically around the original setting of Cannor the fundimental D&D rules for the world has hamstrung it. It would have been much better if the setting had been created with a bespoke, more limited type of magic. As it is, it's just too sloppy to be particularly immersive, when you consider all of the potential ramifications, which I find quite disappointing.

Good point, tho everything to do with precursor lore is bad. The implications of Lizardmen existing and having had advanced technology for about 92k years for example is not explored, the evolution of humans and goblinoids among giants, genies, lizardmen and even the effect of dwarves on human prehistory is barely explored.
                >If their long-decayed artifacts are powerful enough to kickstart a technological revolution
I mean artificery appeared before relics were found, at least going off by Gnomes having artificiery from 1444, I might be wrong.
                >If I get 3 times as much food but paying the mage to grow them costs two point five times my farm expenses again, I'm still going to do it.
I'm honestly not sure how rare and weak this magic has to be for it to not overturn agrarian societies.

I prefer low fantasy, as it's hard to make an internally consistent world the more you move from the real world and all it's fundamental limitations, trade-offs and mechanism.
I think there is a tendency in fantasy and sci-fi to just exaggerate the scale of everything, which is how you get "every single precursor was immortal, but somehow there were drastic socio-economic differences and for some reason precursors acted as a hivemind" or "Aul-Dwarov is 20k years old and it had all this cool shit".

When you exaggerate in so many aspects but you still want "low fantasy"/historical aspects of your world to take the center-stage like Jay wanted in Blackpowder Chronicles setting, you are forced to insert a lot of plot devices or coincidence to bring the overly-fantastical setting down to reality.

It'd be around 6.5-7 times, unless we're saying that Elves are at their maximum average already because of disease immunity? At that point shouldn't we say that humans can reach 120 on average ignoring the effects of disease?

I'm confused by what you mean, I would say Elves are already closer to their max because of naturally better health, in-code Elves live 390-410 years but I imagine that's overly generous as it's for rulelrs that are not generals and thus are shielded from most danger.
I'd say the human biological limit is 80-100, on the higher end when shielding humans from danger as much as Elven ruler, so I'd 4-5 is a good figure.

6 is too high as 400/6 is just 66 years.

In this time period, I think that if you survived childhood the average age was around 55-60, so 6 times longer is actually generous. I'm saying that the average human age is lower due to disease, and if we ignore the effects of disease for a more even comparison the two become closer

What's much worse is the elves. If we take the stated figures for the elves of 1 child every 400 years then we get a reproduction rate of 0.1%pa.
However, I made a mistake in the previous cals. Parents shouldn't've been included in the figures for final population. This brings the humans down to 3.2% pa. and the goblins down to 9.4% pa.. However, if we include the parent death the elf growth rate goes down to -0.17 pa. Even better.

If the elves are aging at around 1/7 of a human rate in a medieval/early modern society it's reasonable for them to be considered "children' until they reach 100 (even though this is silly and isn't how development works- the fact that people live to around 90 in the modern period doesn't mean that you're now only an adult when you're 24) Realistically the elves should have a reasonable number of kids over a 120-year fertile period- assuming that their fertile period is the same as humans, which it isn't, as it'd be longer due to better health.

what if an elven pregnancy just takes way longer than hummies? like 50 years or so, this would make a lot of sense with all the issues have with longevity vs low birthrate

                Anonymous

If we scale it to their lifespan it'd be around 4 year pregnancies. If they spend that long being pregnant it'd be like a human spending 7.5 years per pregnancy- they'd barely be able to have 3 children, which means you'd have to assume they all survive in order for the species to not fall below replacement levels.

                https://anbennar.fandom.com/wiki/Halanna%27s_Breath
                >Halanna's Breath gives the flora not only nutrients but also gives energy to circumnavigate the dependence on the sun. Indeed, the flowers, plants and trees that inhabit this vast underground ecosystem are perfectly capable of surviving and thriving without solar energy, relying solely on what the bowels of the earth produce. This has given rise to incredible symbioses, with large numbers of bioluminescent plants illuminating vast caverns and producing the light needed by other plants for their survival. Indeed, this very characteristic bioluminescence of the Serpentspine seems to be the result of a prolonged exposure to the energy of Halanna's Breath or its direct exploitation by the plant, which can manifest itself in many different forms. Sometimes, only the fruits of a tree will have this characteristic, while in other places, entire meadows will be illuminated by a type of plant that is very thin and not very tall, whose entire plant glows with a slightly pearly light, sometimes making us almost forget the danger of these caves.
The energy comes from magic and then the plants/fungi form an ecosystem to spread the energy around.

If it's just magic I guess my criticism is moot

            >Well first, if you exclude mages, that's most elves.
Is it though? Elves have higher affinity but I'm not sure that makes the average elf a decent mage.
            >If 10 out of your 30 years as a soldier are spent raising a little kid that's an issue. If it's 10 out of 300 years it's barely noticeable. For a human that's like taking a year off.
(uh, I talked about this for goblins before reading this part)
            I agree with this point.
            >A LOT of elves also simply never have kids. if their fertility rate is 1/7th that of humans like the wiki says, that's a lot of elven women who just never have any kids at all.
That statement is stupid and the person who wrote that is stupid, it also arguably contradicts lore and likely would make no sense in light of the demographics of Sun Elves and other long-lived races in V3.
Anyway for Elves the same argument I used initially applies, it should be mages that are mostly equally represented not archers or "melee" warriors. If Cannor had something like chi then you could make the case but it does not.

              >That statement is stupid and the person who wrote that is stupid,
Well yeah, I agree with that completely. Elf demographics in general are just stupid. Having an immortal unaging race, that somehow spends a century as a teenager, yet doesn't generally have kids during that time however, with low fertility overall, is simply dumb. ESPECIALLY if they can get it on with humans and other races, who have no such restrictions. It's one thing if they're like Tolkien elves where they're a completely different class of existence, and God himself has put out a product recall on them.
But D&D elves that live 400 years and have 0.8 children are just stupid. They should be insanely numerous if they're fertile for that long. AND resistant or immune to disease, AND don't age, and are incredibly beautiful too... yeah it makes no sense.

              >it should be mages that are mostly equally represented not archers or "melee" warriors. If Cannor had something like chi then you could make the case but it does not.
I guess. I feel like if a species has a 400 year lifespan, almost eternal youth, and human-to-superhuman intelligence, they could just become so skilled in a way of fighting, or in physical training, that the differences in reach or height or skeletal structure become irrelevant. IIRC elven cav units are horse archers and it says despite horse archery being so difficult to master, elves can do it because they have so much time - I don't think a difference in draw weight is gonna stop miss elf from becoming a horse riding archer if she really wants to. Especially if she can just "mess around with it during her teen years" that apparently last more than half as long as the Damerian Republic.

Thoughts on 1836 Dwarovar demographics? They put in races that are not represented in Eu4.
IMO there needs to be more Gnomes.

      Anonymous

I mean, it doesn't matter how magical the fungi are, you're not supporting almost two hundred million creatures in a larger-than normal mountain range. If they are all supposed to be biological creatures, and if Dwarves can't eat gems and stone, then they would either have to trade with the surface or starve. The energy needs to come from somewhere, and unless we're talking about the Primeval Serpentspine there isn't going to be enough chemosynthesis going on to feed hundreds of millions of sentient creatures. This, in addition to how the dwarves are supposed to reproduce slowly, makes this pretty silly.

            https://anbennar.fandom.com/wiki/Halanna%27s_Breath
The energy comes from magic and then the plants/fungi form an ecosystem to spread the energy around.

because gnolls are actually wholesome and it's actually their religion is bad
you get a modifier later where if you try to convert a monstrous province outside of bulwar it just converts to the non-monstrous version of that religion so xhazobkult turns into kvangahga
              new sun cult theocracy btw

                Anonymous

if I remember correctly it is official NSC doctrine that only Humans in Bulwar have souls/can be saved. so there is really no reason for a Sun Cult country to convert non-bulwari.

                Anonymous

"The Bulwari traditionally believed that non-human races don’t have the Light of Surael inside them, but nevertheless they are part of the Struggle too, and that they can help Surael to defeat the Dark."

"The Bulwari don’t have a concept of monstrous races or inherently evil races like the Cannorians. Gnolls and harpies are seen as evil not because of what they are, but because of what they do. The relations of the Bulwari with both races are old and complicated, but they believe that the Struggle between Light and Darkness of gnolls and harpies is to overcome their corrupt practices, as those were the result of the corruption of the gods that created gnolls and harpies."

it's official NSC doctrine that Gnolls are only evil because they are raised that way.
however they would absolutely convert them. most likely it would be a different version of the sun cult that focuses only on the struggle against the darkness while ignoring Surael since they don't carry his light within them.

Birzartanses or Varamhar, former is super good for blobbing with PE as it has CCR, decent military buffs and better rulers.
Varamhar MT allows you to create a truly immortal ruler(nothing can kill you), but you need a guide to get it right. The mil buffs on your god ruler are decent but the larp is the main part, going witch-king makes sense in that path I guess.

        Anonymous

BTW Varamhar also gets better rulers(as in the long living rulers get more mana increasing events and fewer mana decreasing events, same as Birzartanses).
The good part about Varamhar's immortal ruler is the infinite siege magic, sadly the mill buffs aren't THAT good, Birzartanses 12.5% artillery combat ability, -5% shock damage received and 5% morale make it competitive.

Moonhaven is elven Portugal, with small core state and massive colonial/trade empire. I wouldn't say it's great or very flavourful MT, but if you want to get rich from the sea and don't mind more sandboxy start, it's okay. You also get to befriend other elves and pick a side in the religious war, with option to claim all elven provinces in the Empire, if you pick RC. It might be even stronger now, with reworked trade nodes. With a bit of luck, I had 100 naval tradition before 1500, with 0 yearly decay. I also had Renaissance spawn in Port Munas, Colonialism in the province next to it, and then another institution in my capital (manufactories?)

Gronstunad is in the MT approval phase right now. I'm not too interested right now since it doesn't look as elaborate as other Dwarven tags despite being so important. Seems to be more of a paternalist "watch over the Halessi and Raheni" similar to Verkal Ozovar and "build up our own legacy as the sole dwarven empire of the east."

          >Ovdal Tungr
Fricking finally. Literally the only dorf tag I am interested in. They better be big on naval conquest, trade and colonisation. It'd be great if they made them interact with Sarhal a lot.

I couldn't post the current O-T MT draft, but there's a mission line that first starts with you consolidating Southern Cannor under your or Crathanor's rule, then conquering/influencing Vyzemby and the Lizardfolk to create a trade empire. It's very Portugal-core in terms of minimum expansion. As in, it just wants you to grab a trade port there and there but encourages you to take more for the trade empire you're supposed to establish.
The current draft also has Ironclads as a special ship type, which exchanges cost and combat width for a larger hullsize and more cannons. It also has a customizable Sea Hold, which is a special type of galley (you do lose your normal galleys in the current proposal due to EU4 limitations) that is meant to be a combination of a Precursor Migrant ship and a steam ironclad.

It's having a bit of trouble getting through content reviewers, but that's more because that a lot of the major ones are on break/busy with real life commitments for this MT, along with some concerns about implementation (the Sea Hold seems to be the most problematic in terms of getting the A-ok).

Dartax can impale Keladora of Birzasantes. Anbenncost and Damerian nations on both shores (Istralore, Wesdam) are kind of like that, but it's mostly background stuff, at most you will get tolerance events about half elf noble heir or elven paramour and I think those can trigger for anyone with the right minorites, so Lorent and the rest of Empire too can get them.

What the hell, I thought they were precursors from what's now Eordand that fled into the feyrealm and got spat out the other side of the domandrod millennia (from their standpoint) later
this is even dumber than I thought, they got lost for 2 or 3 elf generations, only breeding with each other, and are now different on a biological level? Yeah yeah I get there was fey magic and other planes do weird stuff blah blah, but there could be wood elves that are literally cousins with current living moon elves.

Main problem is savegames get bricked. It saves fine but if i load the save i'am stuck in observer mode and the world is empty. wich is weird becauswe until yesterday this wasant happening (i could load saves just fine). I didint change anything in any of the folder from yesterday to today.

I honestly can't think of another strategy game/mod that updates as often (bitbucket), and also has lore to discuss
Maybe shit like TNO or kaiserreich could count, they're limited by the historical setting in a bad way, and pretty sure their development is very locked off from the public too
Most of the strategy games with good stories are either old-ass RTS games that have been abandoned for decades, or shit that's already discussed on /vg/ or even /vrpg/. And the strategy games that do update a lot are pure gameplay and thus not as much to discuss and argue about.

also FWIW, EU4 is one of the most played strategy games in the world at all times, consistently for the past decade or so. so It makes sense a popular mod could have a fast thread.
Anbennar also has so much fricking STUFF in it, you could cut pieces out and spin them off into their own game and they'd still be many times bigger than other mods. Like if only the dwarovar was its own EU4-with-dwarves mod it would still be one of the most impressive mods.

Sadly I doubt it, future PDS games will probably all use the Imperator/CK3/Vic3 lineage of cringeworthy 3D models. It's cheaper to do that than commission portraits. So mods will be stuck having to do a ton of 3D asset work nobody wanted in the first place.
Johan said EU5 would have pops by the way (based) so they'll probably be represented with those models (cringe)

              Anonymous

What does being shared have to do with it, most of the formables are only formable by a single country or a small group anyway. Nobody's unlocking the completely linear Aelnar missions starting as Lorent. If you play as Jaddari forming Jadd Empire literally just tacks on more missions, it's the same thing just with a name change.
same with escann adventurers. You can only unlock Esthil missions playing as Iron Scepter for example, nobody complains you can't see them all from 11/11/1444 because that would be braindead.

                Anonymous

                Aelnar has multiple paths.
Nobody complains about adventurers because there isn't much you can do to frick your game long-term, the gameplay loop of all adventurers is the same.
Your arguments are deeply moronic, people complain when MTs are badly designed, if a MT is so easy that it doesn't matter how telegraphed it is obviously that will generate far less frustration.

                >there isn't much you can do to frick your game long-term, the gameplay loop of all adventurers is the same.
What? if you migrate to the wrong area you can be completely fricked over, that's common to every adventurer to the point that some specifically tell you where to settle in their formable decision tooltip...
                >frick your game long-term
I'm not even sure what this means, considering people like

Ah you dumb frick, you should have known the tree would have a surprise "get 40% crownland" mission that will take you 20 years to do.

are complaining about doing something besides clicking a specific mission for 20 years, is that "long term"? are these the same people that shit on the dwarovar because they can't blob up to 1k development by 1450?
                >people complain when MTs are badly designed
yes, and they don't complain about all the countless MTs that don't show you everything from the start, in fact most of the highest-rated ones are exactly like that. So obviously it's not a problem

Doing what? illustrations of elves in Bulwar like Jaddar are brown.

They are literally the same. Elves and humans in Bulwar are literally the same shades of tan/brown and I don't understand your point.

You will never be an elf.

Dartax did literally nothing wrong, Bulwar is the birth place of humanity, it belongs to humans only

The black domain is called that because everyone who lives there is BLACK.
the spawn of Yakub don't want you too unlock the inherent magical powers of your Black blood which is why they always depict them as old white wizards

    Favorite Dorfs?

    For me it's

    S
    Kradhumvror
    Gor Burad

    A
    Beer Dorfs
    Platinum Dorfs
    Mithril Dorfs

    B
    Verkal Skomdihr
    Ovdal Lodhum
    Ovdal Kanzad

    C
    Glass Dorfs
    Verkal Gulan
    Amldihr
    Er-natvir

Haven't done the others, some I'm just not interested in like the cav dorfs or the jade dorfs, but I'm planning on doing segdihr and verkal dromak. Also hows kugdihr?

Why are Glass and Gold bad?

        Anonymous

Glass dorf MT forced me to sit on my ass and wait a hundred years for tech to catch up, gold hold is a great concept but the MT is old and it feels underdeveloped. Gulan, kanzad and especially amldihr desperately need updates.

Amldihr feels the worst off, it's the old dwarven capital hold yet the gobs and orcs do something more interesting with that area (truedagger and shattered crown) than the dwarf formable for it

        , like what the frick.

Amldihr is so fricking frustrating. An entire capital province full of holds, an end node that can semi-easily get the global trade spawn, and...a trash MT that don't even give you the proper claim to complete it.

That being said, i'll retry an ahmldir game with dwarven knowledge. If it allow me to pick a cool MT, it may be worth it.

I know there's a submod for amldihr, try that, can't be worse than the actual MT.

isn't it the stupid meme mod that just combines all the dwarf mission trees in one gigantic mess and gives it to amhildir?

That being said, i'll retry an ahmldir game with dwarven knowledge. If it allow me to pick a cool MT, it may be worth it.

here, and yeah, I tried that thing. It's fricking moronic, I was hoping it'd be a decision that allows me to jump from one tree to the next, or pick which one i want, instead it's an unmanageable mess that's a kilometer long to scroll.

fabricate claims in the serpentspine means getting one claim at a time in a long-ass chain of dwarf roads.

Am I moronic or is segdihr just fricked in singleplayer?

I'm not a bad player and I've got experience tardwrangling AI allies, but I've tried a run three times in a row now and every single time within the first 10 years the gnolls wipe jaddar and then proceed to buttfrick azka sur and me by outnumbering us 3 to one while having a war wizard.

Is this just strictly MP only or am I missing something?

The tree was designed for a coop playthrough.

Can I console command the couple azka sur missions and then abandon them to get fricked or does the second half of the MT revolve around them too?

I want to play something in the middle dwarovar but there's not exactly a lot choices, maybe I'll do greedy grinner

        Anonymous

Just wrong, it isn't designed like that. The Azka-Sur part is completely optional and doesn't lock you from the rest of the MT. You can always release them when you get stronger.

Zokka is a free win, they are behind in mil tech and you can probably even get tech 4 before they get 3 and just kill them
