I decided to actually revisit 13 and yeah it's still a fricking tedious bore to play. If you like theae games you need to be locked in a sensory deprivation chamber.

13-1 might have the worst game mechanics. But I enjoyed its story. 13-2 and 13-3's story is so atrociously confusing and dogshit, I couldn't bring myself to play an hour in each game.
JRPGs are finicky for me. I can play one where the gamplay is shit, bit if the story is good/decent I won't mind playing thru it. But if the story is shit, I don't care how good the gameplay is, I'm not finishing it.

13-2 and Lightning Returns are great. 13 is more like a visual novel than an actual game tho.
Youtubers went into a schizo crusade against it, probably because it was the first mainline FF not exclusive to Playstation in a while. They shat on it for being a movie game but the same people today love The Last of Us and God of War, they complain about linearity but are big fans of FFX, they say Lightning is too cold and aloof but their favorite FF characters are Cloud and Squall.
