Swen outright said the Custom Characters are recommended for a first playthrough, then Dark Urge, and then the Origin Characters, since when playing as them the game assumes you know all their secrets. He explicitly stated they're intended for subsequent playthroughs.

larian homebrewed haste to be incredibly broken. it now grants a free action that can be used to do anything. this includes casting another whole extra spell per turn, or for martials, they get to do another attack plus ALL their extra attacks again
because sorcerer can twincast haste, it's better than wiz in that regard, it's like adding a whole extra party member to the fight
wizard has only one advantage over sorc and that is the spellbook. but larian homebrewed multiclassing so that 1 level in wizard still lets you pick any spell from the wizard's spellbook, albeit it will use int instead of cha for spell dc, which can be easily solved with the headband of intellect on sorc
sorc gets metamagic which is really useful. you can twincast haste, you can quickened cast your nukes to attack twice per turn compared to wizard. there's just very little reason to go primarily wizard unless you want the huge spellbook to do a whole bunch of utility things like knock, invis, dimensional door etc
in theory wizard has an advantage in spellcasting in that it can restore spellslots without having to long rest. however, once again due to larian tomfoolery, long rests can be spammed incredibly easily in this game, so that benefit is completely moot. div wizard is also more powerful in tabletop since you can essentially replicate portent dice just by savescumming
If I'm playing a game with a bunch of skill checks, especially social ones, I'm picking a class that scales off charisma so I can pass them. That means Sorcerer and Paladin are great choices, and then between the two, Paladin has more MAD then Sorcerer where I can dump strength to get good stats in other things for covering skill checks.
it's 5th edition, half-elf is the absolute best race for any class that isn't a hardcore melee fighter. It's basically just Human with except they trade their feat for +2 Cha and Darkvision, which is way fricking better than any feat not named Great Weapon Mastery or Polearm Mastery.
It's a free bonus action attack that adds all the same modifiers your regular attack did, just with 1d4 base.
A good spear with polearm master can benefit from a shield for more AC, dueling for more damage every hit (while doing more hits), and every other per-hit buffs too.

point is, paladins aren't about hope, or despair. they're about righteousness. you can't challenge their faith in the rightness of their cause. they don't "try", they "do". a paladin doesn't look at you and offer hope. he looks at you and offers certainty. they will never give in to despair.
I also think paladins cannot exist in settings where the world has fallen. paladins are a product of ageless institutions, people who have been selected for and conditioned into seeing the world in a specific way that isn't natural but a product of aspects of the human spirit built upon itself over thousands of years of tradition. that's the foundation upon which their faith is built, the source of their strength. they would shatter if the world fell, but they would have all died in its defence long before it did so they would never be around to see it. a fallen world can't have paladins in it because they would all have died in its defence.

Would have been genuinely interesting if you could play one, and the tension and suspense of the game is how you try to keep it from the party. Then you recruit the dark urge and help him become the chosen and his right hand. But that wouldn’t be “main character” playing.

Not in the game. Only 4 elements which is good but I already have 2 casters, open hand which is just a bad battle master, and shadow which is super good all around and has tons of out of combat utility.

Yeah I was kind of surprised how much use I got out of silence early on. Stops the harpies from singing their song and stops the goblin cleric from calling from help. Then later on when you can see in magic dark easily you can just drop a darkness field on an enemy and just go to town.

Almost all monks have limp level up features for level 7 to 12, and 4 elements spells are just bad spells that take away your monk's ki that could be spent on monk things.
Any other monk could just swap to a caster if they wanted after 6 levels and be just as strong at punching with better spells.
Monk absolutely FRICKS at 7-12 in BG3 because of all the god tier Monk magic items they throw at you. Even if your class features barely change you're still doing the most damage of anyone at level 10 and it's not close.
I mean taking pure monks to that level. You can use all those monk items at monk level 6/thief rogue 6 or something, and all you lose is some ki and +1 damage per hit on average from going d6 to d8.
If all you lose is that, and you gain an extra bonus action to use martial arts with every single turn, or action surge + battlemaster maneuvers, or 3rd level spells, you're just kinda better off going with mixing it.
Monk is an absolute monster that people sleep on because it's shit in almost all of the tabletop editions and pathfinder. Four elements is a trashfire and always has been, but Tavern Brawler Monk can turn everything into chunky salsa with his bare hands. Way of the Shadow has a moronic amount of utility for basically free, and Open Palm monk is the physical manifestation of the "Behead Black folk" copypasta.

Say for whatever reason the monk is set to be an archer/spear chucker for a turn. Hide -> Attack is better than Nothing -> Attack.

Smite is about the hardest single melee attack in the game except Berserker Barbarian criting.
I personally think Barbarian is better, because they can throw objects so hard that they are more lethal than most anyone elses spamable abilites, and they can shove better.
Wisdom is an important stat on everyone, never dump it or dex since they are the two most important saving throws. Int is fine to dump on almost every class
Visual vomit, culturally they're fricking pathetic being stick in the mud worshippers of a shitty lich, live in another plane from anyone else so they don't fit, and then overtuned in gameplay harder than anyone else in a desperate attempt to lure people to play them.
Being one brings nothing to the story when Laezel is already there for a much better shown representative of their mostly uniform race, especially given they didn't include the other Gith.

spirit guardians aoe + summoned greatsword literally carries your party, that and gale aoe fireballs.
Tempest Cleric is insanely strong too. The domain charge is stronger than a fighter's Action Surge, on short rest you just get to max out damage on a lightning/thunder spell, and by 6th level you get it twice a short rest. Even at level 3, Shatter's always prepared and a guaranteed ranged aoe 12 or 24 damage, almost as strong as Fireball's average 14 or 28 damage.
it doesn’t get chain lightning which is really unfortunate. idk whether i want to multiclass 6 storm sorc 6 tempest cleric or drop more levels of tempest cleric for chain lightning
Dip into Wizard instead, they can copy any spells from scrolls that they have spell slots for, even if they couldn't learn them at that level of Wizard. If you find one scroll of Chain Lightning, you can cast it that way even with 11 cleric/1 wizard, and slap on the 17 intellect crown to give it a decent DC.
I'd either go 10 Tempest Cleric/2 Divination Wizard for portent, or 11/1 to get Cleric 6th level spells as an option with all the stuff you copy from Wizard.
hmm i dunno if i want to rely on portent so heavily. 17 int is pretty shit dc-wise so you'd probably have to burn portent a lot to guarantee enemies won't roll saving throws on chain lightning. there IS the legendary staff which lets you cast a free chain lightning and lightning bolt every short rest which might be a decent alternative

if you clear all of act 1 on only one long rest it's hard to believe you're not doing something wrong
17 Int's not that bad of a DC. Compared to a pure wizard at 20 Int, it's just 2 less DC.
But while that pure wizard would be casting Chain Lightning for an average 45 damage that would then be halved on fail, your 1-2 level dip would be doing 80 damage with half on fail. A +35 damage for -2 DC (and your failed DC only being 5 damage short of the average) is a trade that GWM/SS's could only dream of.
Plus you'd get 4 other Wizard spells to use and you could go for ones that don't involve saves.
there is so much shit in this game and so many quests/paths that even after 5 playthroughs people will probably find new stuff. my next run whenever I finish will be the "jerk/bad guy" run.
It still amazes me that they included all these shar items that require dim light to work, but didn’t include fricking twilight cleric to allow shadowheart (or the player) to make them actually useful

Humans get +1 skill proficiency, 25% carry weight, and proficiency with spears/pikes/halberds/glaives, light armor, and shields.
Which actually means +1 proficiency and 25% carry weight.

yakuza, bg3 needs a couple months of bugfixing, a lot of people have crashes and reports of memory leaks, so wait until it's all patched, then you're good to go with bg3, maybe even catch a discount if you're lucky

It's probably the worst class on that list but doesn't have an Act 1 companion to fill the role (Cleric and Wizard are lower on the list due to Shadowheart and Gale respectively) and is straightforward unlike Monk
It's good. I think the best way to go with it is beastmaster with beast tamer, you can resummon find familiar and animal companion for free between every fight and they each are a chance to do good shit.
It just sucks that late game it falls off. At level 5 it's one of the strongest feeling classes since at the same time you get Extra Attack, all your animal companion options get a second ability, huge HP increase, and add your proficiency bonus to AC and damage rolls.
Spitting out infinite flammable webs from the spider is fricked. No one can move, their attacks are at disadvantage and everyone has advantage against them.
But after level 5 it's probably better to multiclass with anything else and enjoy your free action economy utility, extra attack, and proficiencies in practically everything (even heavy armor).
but still what? if you are not wise enough to resist a simple command spell, you deserve to drop your weapon, command lvl 1 is the lowest tier possible

before you go in there change Shadowhearts prepared spells to include command and then use the restoration thing
then command him to drop the sword and have somebody ready to pick it up
then you can escape with the sword or fight him with him dealing much less damage
So plowing my characters through the Nautiloid and I only got the Flaming Sword out of Avernus once out of 4 characters.
I got it first try then never again. Even tried savescumming a bit on my custom Paladin. Tips on getting the sword? I'm not above cheese it's just annoying because I would get it almost everytime in EA. Now it's almost impossible especially on Tactician.
Not really. Ending at level 12 is kinda stupid, because you don't get a capstone ability, you get your third ASI instead. You don't even get an additional spell slot going 11 to 12 on a caster. So bare minimum, 1 level in something else is almost always ideal, and some classes get jack shit for 9/10/11.
Main way to do it is Necromancy Wizard. But you don't get the actual spell until you're level 5, which depending on how much you're doing can take until you're more than halfway through with Act 1. It does scale up a bit, the big thing though is BG3 has lots of items that buff unarmed attacks. Consider using a quarterstaff until your martial arts die improves

Until your martial arts die gets bigger a quarterstaff is a better weapon.

str monk can do all of that
barb is more of a ranged character, they just toss shit that does a ton of damage but they don't really care about going up close since they get disadvantage up close and lose all their throwing buffs if they use melee. but they're still really good at shoving and throwing enemies themselves if you want them to do it. their movement is also nowhere near as good as monk's
With Frost Giant gloves? 8 STR, 8 INT, 8 CHA, as much as you can get in the other stats with WIS as priority. 8 STR because the gloves set it to 23 anyways.
Without Frost Giant gloves? You're the most MAD to ever MAD but priority is obviously STR then WIS.
you do not want to use hill giant gauntlets because at the point that you get it, you can also get the gloves of soulcatching which is 1d10 force damage to unarmed + advantage which is vastly stronger than being able to dump str
I got the giant gloves way before the soul gloves. But yes the giant gloves are better on whoever uses the Giantslayer greatsword that doubles STR bonus.
prioritise str then wis. should be 17 str and 16 wis as base. tavern brawler will bump up str to 18. you will need some dex for saving throws and a little con but do not sacrifice str and wis dump int and cha. str is stronger point-for-point than wis especially early on. wis is still important for your lv6 trait which is 1d4 + wis mod to unarmed, and later you will find boots that grant additional wis mod to unarmed
you will be able to acquire a few permanent stat buffs along your journey, it's up to you if you want to give it to your str monk but this class scales very well with str due to tavern brawler doubling your str bonus to both attack rolls and damage rolls. remember that odd stats actually don't give you any bonuses and are just a stepping stone towards a target that is an even number

Monk is focused on mobility and lots of hits rather than strong individual strikes, they get some really good supernatural powers and resistances, and open up options for making things dead. Fighter, at its core and regardless of subclass, boils down to ranged turret or charging in and tearing it up without too much in the way of nuance.

Paladin is the quintessential hero class, especially since 5e greatly eased its moronic restrictions on being strictly Lawful Good and focused on oaths instead. It's Fighter with a touch of Cleric, focused on Charisma, and gets some really fricking cool abilities.

Anyone else turned Karlach into a weapon throwing zerker and randomly losing weapons? I keep losing weapons even after I'm certain I picked them up. There isn’t a sorcerer companion, and dark urge defaults as sorcerer. Pretty easy it’s that high
larian homebrewed haste to be incredibly broken. it now grants a free action that can be used to do anything. this includes casting another whole extra spell per turn, or for martials, they get to do another attack plus ALL their extra attacks again
because sorcerer can twincast haste, it's better than wiz in that regard, it's like adding a whole extra party member to the fight
wizard has only one advantage over sorc and that is the spellbook. but larian homebrewed multiclassing so that 1 level in wizard still lets you pick any spell from the wizard's spellbook, albeit it will use int instead of cha for spell dc, which can be easily solved with the headband of intellect on sorc
sorc gets metamagic which is really useful. you can twincast haste, you can quickened cast your nukes to attack twice per turn compared to wizard. there's just very little reason to go primarily wizard unless you want the huge spellbook to do a whole bunch of utility things like knock, invis, dimensional door etc
in theory wizard has an advantage in spellcasting in that it can restore spellslots without having to long rest. however, once again due to larian tomfoolery, long rests can be spammed incredibly easily in this game, so that benefit is completely moot. div wizard is also more powerful in tabletop since you can essentially replicate portent dice just by savescumming
Divination wizard is way stronger in this than 5e, you get to see the roll before using your portent dice so you never waste them.
If I'm playing a game with a bunch of skill checks, especially social ones, I'm picking a class that scales off charisma so I can pass them. That means Sorcerer and Paladin are great choices, and then between the two, Paladin has more MAD then Sorcerer where I can dump strength to get good stats in other things for covering skill checks.

it's 5th edition, half-elf is the absolute best race for any class that isn't a hardcore melee fighter. It's basically just Human with except they trade their feat for +2 Cha and Darkvision, which is way fricking better than any feat not named Great Weapon Mastery or Polearm Mastery.

Yeah I was kind of surprised how much use I got out of silence early on. Stops the harpies from singing their song and stops the goblin cleric from calling from help. Then later on when you can see in magic dark easily you can just drop a darkness field on an enemy and just go to town.
Gloomstalker 3 lets you see the darkness I mentioned above.
Almost all monks have limp level up features for level 7 to 12, and 4 elements spells are just bad spells that take away your monk's ki that could be spent on monk things.
Any other monk could just swap to a caster if they wanted after 6 levels and be just as strong at punching with better spells.
Monk absolutely FRICKS at 7-12 in BG3 because of all the god tier Monk magic items they throw at you. Even if your class features barely change you're still doing the most damage of anyone at level 10 and it's not close.
I mean taking pure monks to that level. You can use all those monk items at monk level 6/thief rogue 6 or something, and all you lose is some ki and +1 damage per hit on average from going d6 to d8.
If all you lose is that, and you gain an extra bonus action to use martial arts with every single turn, or action surge + battlemaster maneuvers, or 3rd level spells, you're just kinda better off going with mixing it.

No. D&D 5E did away with character alignments. Only planar entities like Fiends or Fey have an inherent alignment.

I personally think Barbarian is better, because they can throw objects so hard that they are more lethal than most anyone elses spamable abilites, and they can shove better.

spirit guardians aoe + summoned greatsword literally carries your party, that and gale aoe fireballs.
Tempest Cleric is insanely strong too. The domain charge is stronger than a fighter's Action Surge, on short rest you just get to max out damage on a lightning/thunder spell, and by 6th level you get it twice a short rest. Even at level 3, Shatter's always prepared and a guaranteed ranged aoe 12 or 24 damage, almost as strong as Fireball's average 14 or 28 damage.

Dip into Wizard instead, they can copy any spells from scrolls that they have spell slots for, even if they couldn't learn them at that level of Wizard. If you find one scroll of Chain Lightning, you can cast it that way even with 11 cleric/1 wizard, and slap on the 17 intellect crown to give it a decent DC.
I'd either go 10 Tempest Cleric/2 Divination Wizard for portent, or 11/1 to get Cleric 6th level spells as an option with all the stuff you copy from Wizard.
hmm i dunno if i want to rely on portent so heavily. 17 int is pretty shit dc-wise so you'd probably have to burn portent a lot to guarantee enemies won't roll saving throws on chain lightning. there IS the legendary staff which lets you cast a free chain lightning and lightning bolt every short rest which might be a decent alternative

17 Int's not that bad of a DC. Compared to a pure wizard at 20 Int, it's just 2 less DC.
But while that pure wizard would be casting Chain Lightning for an average 45 damage that would then be halved on fail, your 1-2 level dip would be doing 80 damage with half on fail. A +35 damage for -2 DC (and your failed DC only being 5 damage short of the average) is a trade that GWM/SS's could only dream of.
Plus you'd get 4 other Wizard spells to use and you could go for ones that don't involve saves.

It's good. I think the best way to go with it is beastmaster with beast tamer, you can resummon find familiar and animal companion for free between every fight and they each are a chance to do good shit.
It just sucks that late game it falls off. At level 5 it's one of the strongest feeling classes since at the same time you get Extra Attack, all your animal companion options get a second ability, huge HP increase, and add your proficiency bonus to AC and damage rolls.
Spitting out infinite flammable webs from the spider is fricked. No one can move, their attacks are at disadvantage and everyone has advantage against them.
But after level 5 it's probably better to multiclass with anything else and enjoy your free action economy utility, extra attack, and proficiencies in practically everything (even heavy armor).

So plowing my characters through the Nautiloid and I only got the Flaming Sword out of Avernus once out of 4 characters.
I got it first try then never again. Even tried savescumming a bit on my custom Paladin. Tips on getting the sword? I'm not above cheese it's just annoying because I would get it almost everytime in EA. Now it's almost impossible especially on Tactician.

Not really. Ending at level 12 is kinda stupid, because you don't get a capstone ability, you get your third ASI instead. You don't even get an additional spell slot going 11 to 12 on a caster. So bare minimum, 1 level in something else is almost always ideal, and some classes get jack shit for 9/10/11.
Level 12 makes sense to end on as that's where the true bullshit that mages can do starts to crop up. Most premade adventures end there for a reason

Main way to do it is Necromancy Wizard. But you don't get the actual spell until you're level 5, which depending on how much you're doing can take until you're more than halfway through with Act 1. There's also Spores Druid and Oathbreaker Paladin (Paladin won't get it until level 9, but at 7 should get an aura that boosts damage of undead creatures) if you want to respec companions to add more to your army; unsure but I think Cleric can get Animate Dead as well.

I'm playing druid, I thought it would be way higher up that chart, I thought people would avoid Warlock because Wyll felt weak and one dimensional in EA. Rogue is kinda dull too in these games unless you multiclass. I knew Palladin would be top. I wonder if the popularity of rogue and ranger is due to the influx of the wider gamer market i.e. non fans of the BG series.

Nothing happened in my game. She got kidnapped, I told Raphael to frick off, later found her in the sewers and that's it. Actually a lot of plotlines just faded away in my game.
There's a way to resolve Raphael's questline that she ends up walking off with him later.
How do I deal damage as a Monk? My Barbarian and Paladin friends are hitting much harder in the early game, will there be anything that will improve my damage? Just better weapons or will unarmed damage actually get good?
It does scale up a bit, the big thing though is BG3 has lots of items that buff unarmed attacks. Consider using a quarterstaff until your martial arts die improves

Utilize flurry of blows to turn meatier targets into paste, otherwise just abuse the fact that you have two attacks a round with your bonus unarmed attack. At level 4 take Taven Brawler and find a way to pump your strength (I believe there's a magical item that sets it to a certain level). Until your martial arts die gets bigger a quarterstaff is a better weapon.

I'm fricking done with this game. Karmic dice off, bonuses out the wazoo, 90+% chances of success and I STILL consistently fail everything, both in and out of combat.

If you aren't a skill monkey you shouldn't be talking shit. If you don't spec for skills why should you pass them. Also you don't need to make any checks for anything just play. You're supposed to keep playing if you fail checks.

I try to match the skills of a character to their use (high charisma character does the speaking, rogue with high dexterity opens locks etc.)
The problem is not that I use wrong characters for the job at hand, it's that I roll sub-5 base rolls at an astounding rate.
I played a bard so everything skill check rolled with advantage dice and it did all the talking lockpick ECT. So it really is up to you.
Basically if you get an autosave notification you should quicksave and be prepared to reload or prebuff.

What is the credited way to do Tavern Brawler? STR monk or Barb? I want a character that can jump around and throw people and items and shove morons off cliffs.
str monk can do all of that
barb is more of a ranged character, they just toss shit that does a ton of damage but they don't really care about going up close since they get disadvantage up close and lose all their throwing buffs if they use melee. but they're still really good at shoving and throwing enemies themselves if you want them to do it. their movement is also nowhere near as good as monk's
What's the stat spread for STR Monk?
With Frost Giant gloves? 8 STR, 8 INT, 8 CHA, as much as you can get in the other stats with WIS as priority. 8 STR because the gloves set it to 23 anyways.
Without Frost Giant gloves? You're the most MAD to ever MAD but priority is obviously STR then WIS.
you do not want to use hill giant gauntlets because at the point that you get it, you can also get the gloves of soulcatching which is 1d10 force damage to unarmed + advantage which is vastly stronger than being able to dump str
I got the giant gloves way before the soul gloves. But yes the giant gloves are better on whoever uses the Giantslayer greatsword that doubles STR bonus.
prioritise str then wis. should be 17 str and 16 wis as base. tavern brawler will bump up str to 18. you will need some dex for saving throws and a little con but do not sacrifice str and wis dump int and cha. str is stronger point-for-point than wis especially early on. wis is still important for your lv6 trait which is 1d4 + wis mod to unarmed, and later you will find boots that grant additional wis mod to unarmed
you will be able to acquire a few permanent stat buffs along your journey, it's up to you if you want to give it to your str monk but this class scales very well with str due to tavern brawler doubling your str bonus to both attack rolls and damage rolls. remember that odd stats actually don't give you any bonuses and are just a stepping stone towards a target that is an even number

How similar will monk play to fighter?
More attacks, less damage. A lot more option’s especially for mobility, basically reducing dps for more to do.

Monk is focused on mobility and lots of hits rather than strong individual strikes, they get some really good supernatural powers and resistances, and open up options for making things dead. Fighter, at its core and regardless of subclass, boils down to ranged turret or charging in and tearing it up without too much in the way of nuance.
Paladin is the quintessential hero class, especially since 5e greatly eased its moronic restrictions on being strictly Lawful Good and focused on oaths instead. It's Fighter with a touch of Cleric, focused on Charisma, and gets some really fricking cool abilities.

Nope, level cap still exists at 12 (unless you mod for multiclassing levels only), and you always get the same amount of XP. Anyone you invite to your party will level up to your exact level and XP.

Anyone else turned Karlach into a weapon throwing zerker and randomly losing weapons? I keep losing weapons even after I'm certain I picked them up. Walked into the nursery with 2 of those spears that deal extra lightning damage on being thrown and they're gone. I've literally walked through every room and they're nowhere to be seen.
It's a shame too, cause she deals a ton of damage.

it's from act 3 in a quest with voss and raphael. however, you can get it early in act 1 by going invisible then disarming voss when you see him at the bridge with his red dragon before he flies away
Don't even need to go invisible, you can just have Shadowheart Command:Drop it. But you've only 1 try.
i am 100% sure you are not even supposed to be able to do that since voss gives you the same sword as a reward much later on in act 3. it will most likely be patched out if larian cares to do it

To be fair considering he flies off and you get a bunch of spoiler dialogue with Lae'zel after doing so it's definitely sequence breaking, it hasn't yet caused any quests to break but we'll see.

she is probably one of the worst Cleric Domains, its hilarious they stuck her with that purely for the plot.
she is a cleric of shar, so any kind of reclassing into a different cleric domain is already anti-rp, which defeats the purpose
