What's the best one after 3rd gen? Or is it just a consistent decline?
I've been playing them in order through emulation and I really enjoyed gen 4 and 5, gen 6 is next and I don't think I'm looking forward to it much, it looks like that's where things shit the bed.
gen 6 had some nice moments, the region is pretty comfy, but it's just so fricking babby tier easy it's ridiculous, only game i never felt like re-visiting again.
Kalos is a top 3 region but yeah the battles are too easy

There's always a debate about Platinum or Black and White 2 being the best games out there with Emerald and HG/SS just below them, Black and White 1 are considered good but not the best and Diamond and Pearl are shit. Of course this is just a concensus, there's nothing wrong if your favorites are X and Y or whatever.

platinum, hgss, and emerald are my top three, followed by frlg, then bw2 and bw.
other games aren't important and gen vi is when the games begin definitely declining each gen, whereas from iii to v it felt more like each gen had some improvements and some debatable points
emerald with a slightly expanded map, gen iv mons, and a general overhaul of movesets/abilities/etc and trainer teams would be my favorite game probably

Once online support for the 3DS dies, the only 3DS game you could argue is worth checking out is ORAS, but even then, Emerald has never not been the best version of Hoenn, once online functionality is removed you could make the argument that even the original Ruby and Sapphire are better than ORAS.
HGSS has SOVL, Gen V is the most competent generation since the GB/GBC era.
The Hoenn and Sinnoh games are bad and no amount of zoomer/zillenial nostalgia will convince me otherwise.

Gen 3 has something about it that I just can't get into. I'm one of those people that can only get to about Gym 6 before I stop. Even as a kid the games just felt weird to me.

Gen 6 being not as good as Gens 3-5 but still fine is not a controversial opinion, XY and ORAS are good games, however they are not as good as the gold standard such as Emerald, Platinum, HGSS, BW or B2W2.
Gen 6 suffers from significant balancing issues, moreso than the Johto games ever could and that is unfortunately intentional game design. You are expected to outlevel the hardest postgame fights by the time you make it to the League for the first time, The Exp. Share is undeniably broken as while your team skyrockets with Exp., none of the battles are scaled to match your higher levels.
The battle facilities are replaced with the Battle Chateau which isn't an adequate replacement for obvious reasons.
You can't transfer Pokemon from older gens without paying for a Pokemon Bank subscription.
The story in ORAS is actively worse than it is in Ruby and Sapphire.
The structure of routes, towns and dungeons in XY is a significant downgrade in comparison to even gen 1.
I could go on and on, you get the picture, gen 4 and gen 5 do not have these problems, nor do they have other problems that bring them down to gen 6's level of quality.
The only thing I will ever defend gen 6 for is the sheer amount of available Pokemon in XY which allows for incredibly varied teams on repeated playthroughs, the online functionality that will die in the coming years, the Regigigas encounter in ORAS and the character customization that was intentionally excluded from ORAS.

Shroomish was at his worst in gen 3. Stuck with Mach Punch at best for attacking for a very long time. In gen 4 it got stuff like Force Palm and Seed Bomb, way better attacks.

You can reasonably do it with glitches.
Gen 1 is Gen 1, the Celebi event is hard coded into the Virtual Console versions of Gen 2, the Pomeg glitch lets you get any Pokemon in Gen 3 and you can go spelunking in DP's Void for all the Mythicals.

in g2, you have glitches and VC Crystal for Celebi
in g3, you have glitches for Deoxys, Japanese Emerald for Mew, Channel for Jirachi, Orre games for Ho-Oh and Lugia. apparently the Japanese bonus disc for Colosseum also gives you Celebi.
in g4 darkai and shaymin can be glitched to. manaphy is available via the ranger games.
arceus's fricked though, since the in-game event was never released so it won't go through Bank.
g5 is where the shitstorm starts and mythicals start becoming "frick you, be around for this event"

You did get a rom that lets you evolve trade evolutions without trading, right? If not, yeah, you're gonna have to edit them in.

There is nothing special about arbitrarily choosing a set of rules. Try beating the game with just one pokemon, without using any items.
nuzlock rules are made specifically for pokemon and make it way more fun.

nuzlock is harder than one pokmeon or any items, there are level caps, species clauses,there are even groups like wonderlock, soullock, tons of these but they follow some basic rules
