literally using a Nokia phone CPU from 1997, severely underclocked and cut down version nonetheless, also limited graphical capabilities that are only for spire based graphics
>Its closest contemporaries were the Wonderswan Color and the Neo Geo Pocket Color, both of which were behind the Genesis and SNES in capabilities.
yeah companies liked to cheap out when making cheap children's toys, nothing new
example, Dell Axim is a PDA that released in 2002 (so it was definitely being developed while the GBA was) and it's literally 20x - 100x better in hardware in every aspect, 20x faster CPU, 100x more RAM, etc, while having the same battery life and size, it can easily run full version of Quake
not the only example, there's many more, heck even PDAs from 1998 had 10x better CPUs and 50x more RAM

Whether some hardware is powerful depends entirely on what sort of product it is. The original Xbox is powerful as a console, as a PC it's a glorified Celeron turd.

it depends on what else exist as a option at the same time
gba is weak portable hardware for the size, could have been a lot stronger even if it costed only 50% more

The GP32 is probably the closest thing to what you're describing now.

thanks, I was thinking what the early homebrew handheld was called
that's a far better argument, it's a LOT more powerful (CPU alone was newer and clocked 10x higher and 20x more RAM, plus proper 16bit stereo sound with similar battery life to GBA) than the GBA even though and directly competed with it, released on the same year, even when it was released only in South Korea for double the price of a GBA
>The GP32 is probably the closest thing to what you're describing now.
yeah exactly, point into perspective how shit the GBA hardware actually was for 2001, even for the price
2 years ago
Anonymous
>that's a far better argument, it's a LOT more powerful than the GBA even though and directly competed with it
The GP32 didn't really compete with the GBA, as you say it's a homebrew device more than an actual gaming console. Basically no games were designed specifically for it. The GBA's real competition, and the platforms it was released to counter, were the already mentioned Wonderswan and NGPC. >even when it was released only in South Korea for double the price of a GBA
With handhelds you get a lot more for your money at the lower end simply because you have flat costs like the screen and speaker eating into the budget.
If you really want to talk about weak for the time, let's look at the GBC or NDS instead.

>The GP32 didn't really compete with the GBA
it did, both are handheld gaming devices, there's nothing wrong with comparing their hardware directly
if you didn't like the pda comparison, then there's no arguments about it
>as you say it's a homebrew device more than an actual gaming console.
it's actually not, it was released as a handheld console with games from studios, it isn't like a china emulation handheld from later days, it just got super popular in the homebrew world since it was easier to make games for compared to the gba
>basically no games were designed specifically for it. The GBA's real competition, and the platforms it was released to counter, were the already mentioned Wonderswan and NGPC.
doesn't matter, it's a perfect example of what portable handheld hardware was capable of
>With handhelds you get a lot more for your money at the lower end simply because you have flat costs like the screen and speaker eating into the budget.
both had screens, speakers, etc, so what's your point?
you got a lot less hardware for the money with the GBA though
>If you really want to talk about weak for the time, let's look at the GBC or NDS instead.
nintendo consoles were always weak hardware wise, that's one of their main strategies, to push gameplay and low prices instead of hardware performance
kinda eating shit these days thanks to switch trying to pull of games it barely can, even first party one (botw constantly going down to 20 fps, etc)

There's a lot of thing wrong with this post I can't be assed to reply to, but I think the important one is this. >nintendo consoles were always weak hardware wise, that's one of their main strategies, to push gameplay and low prices instead of hardware performance
While other Nintendo handhelds competed on being cheaper, more practical, and maybe having inexpensive hardware gimmicks (GB, GBC, NDS, 3DS) the GBA bucked the trend being more powerful to counter its insurgent competitors.

Basically only a genuine optical drive will read genuine discs. The best thing is to mod it with a large drive (you also need an LBA-48 BIOS past 128GB) and avoid using the optical drive. Then load games into it over Ethernet.
And as always, if you're new to this, check your fricking supercap, and get that thing out of there before it shits all over the board.
it's a grey box with a few buttons and a light on it. it looks like something that belongs under a TV and you wouldn't pay much attention to. the PS5 looks like a giant glowing vegana.

Well to be fair, they were already guilty of this with the fat ps3.
I am trying to hack mine but I can not find a working USB stick. I got a 256 MB stick and that one also does not work. I am super annoyed about this shit and if I order some small stick from Aliexpress which takes like 1 month to get here it also will not work. I am fricked.
i've taken apart basically every console made over the last 30 years and the original Xbox is by far the biggest piece of shit i've ever worked with. it really is just a shitty middleware PC crammed into a console case. there was no thought given to the positioning of the components or heat dissipation or ease of access. i took apart a gamecube (what some consider a notoriously difficult console to reassemble) and put it back together by memory with no trouble. this thing though, holy frick, it took me like an hour just to get the shitty face plate off. for a console that's just a bunch of simple PC components, it has the most unintuitive design ever.
he mentions faceplate so im guessing hes confused with the 360 - what a tool
xbox chads reporting in
no, i meant the original xbox. it has a faceplate (you'd know this if you had ever actually opened one up). the front of the console is literally an individual piece of plastic, its not fused to the rest of the mold. you gays can suck this piece of shit off if you want to but i've actually opened and worked with the thing and it's trash. you wonder why it has so many disc drive problems, HDD problems, overheating problems, clock cap problems, power cap problems? because it's garbage. it wasn't designed with things like proper heat distribution in mind. it was designed to work for the 5 years MS needed it on market and they couldn't give less of a frick what happened afterwards.
Microsoft went from making the first prototypes public at CES in January of 2001 showing the console to shipping November of 2001. It was a complete clusterfest to just launch the thing itself that quickly and they didn't master manufacturing reliability until the middle of the 360 era.
I have three right now.
1 x I completely recapped, installed Xbox hdmi (hd plus) mod. It’s beautiful.
1 x which I recapped but it has a failing memory chip issue (thankfully I was able to diagnos this and ordered replacement chips from ali express. I think since the chips come with enough that I could upgrade to 128mb I think I’m gonna attempt it)
1 x stock which I just removed the clock cap. Really clean.
I would like to collect a clear one but guy I sourced it from went silent on fb marketplace. Am finding it tricky to justify a fourth especially bc the clear one is not as cheap
I've got one that I removed the clock capacitor one, I flashed the bios and its been great so far. Do you have any advice on keeping them in good shape? Id hate it if it died on me.
If you have looked inside and the rest of the caps don't look too bad I think you will be in good shape but best thing to do is put a modchip in and swap the hard drive because if anythings going to die it would be the hard drive. I am not familiar with if you can do that with softmod but I think so, it just requires someone who has more knowledge then me.
I like installing the mods, and then the hard drive set up from there is pretty easy.
I really need the HDMI mod team to update their bios to support the 3TB plus HDD, then I will finally format and throw every xbox game on it.
Although its just a HDD, eventually I'll wait for SSD prices to come down and do a final swap. IDE to SATA mod is a good one if you are updating. make sure to get the startech adapter

We categorize hardware by years, being shit hardware don't make it retro when the PS2 was already out for a year
Again, it sounds like you never owned a system before everything between PC/Arcade/Console/Handheld was homogenized. The PSP was considered powerful hardware in 2004 because it's a handheld, it's not competing with arcade PCBs.
Doesn't matter, it's hardware from a specific year, that's it, I think it's pretty logical to assume that small-mobile battery powered devices are never the same level as dedicated AC powered hardware, I have no idea why that should make a difference. It doesn't make something "retro".
GBA wasn't even retro when Dreamcast was, so by /vr/ rules your argument makes no sense.
I would like to qualify your statement by adding that Scud Race is by no means a snapshot of what the average arcade game was like back in '96. It was the absolute zenith of the industry. Other than that, I believe your point still stands, and I think this is good discussion. I appreciate it.
This, Scud race and the model 3 in general were powerful but expensive beasts. In 1996 you had most developers make arcade games for hardware closer to a Model 2 or Playstation, or some good ass 2d power house at the minimum, Model 3 games (mostly developed by Sega themselves) were the top of the line outliers.
Anyone here done the CPU upgrade on their Xbox?
I know that doubling the RAM is a fairly common upgrade but you rarely see anyone showing off their CPU mods
Fun, interesting, experiments, expanding capabilities, etc.
People upgrade old computers all the time with era appropriate (or even modern) expansions for no reason.
Everything from Amigas to MacBook Airs with reflown CPUs, heck UMPCs from 18 years ago that got CPUs swapped in that they never had.
As long as you understand you will have more fun doing the mods than using it have at it. I doubt you are going to find any modern guides but maybe try forums for XBMC as opposed to anything else since that was supported for years after the rest of the scene died.
>As long as you understand you will have more fun doing the mods than using it have at it.
Most fun I have doing modifications like that is that I can port more software to it, that's more fun than doing the mod itself.
See this is the thing about gays like you. Yeah - we are intelligent, capable people with a bit of money. A video game is only going to interest us for as long as we want it to. Otherwise we are off to finding something challenging. If we only had an Xbox then we would play the shit out of it - but in most cases we have more than one system, or computer so of course nothing keeps our attention for too long. The mods ARE part of the fun. And having something unique that you put a bit of work into is not a bad hobby, you could get into worse things.
The only reasons to poo pooo is you have your own depression or you can’t do this stuff
>Anyone here done the CPU upgrade on their Xbox?
Less than 10 people on earth have. It's not a mod you can do without professional tools.
The people that have done it have not and probably will not publish a guide on how to do it. Last I heard there was a project where somebody was developing an adapter board + socket to put compatible CPU in, but I haven't looked into the progress in a year or so.
>not many really compelling games >designed to look like a large ugly black battleship >most stuff on it can be found elsewhere >reliability issues >poorly designed and incredibly hard to take apart and put back together
The difference is that Microsoft is a giant company flush with cash so they could make sequels while Coleco isn't and entered the industry right in time for the crash.
I've seen Xboxes from time to time in thrift stores but I honestly have never seen a PS2 or Gamecube at Goodwill. That may be an indicator of something.
Xbox is so fricking based. Top Spin, Serious Sam, Doom 3 with the expansion, Fable, Psychonauts, The Simpsons Hit n Run, Simpsons Road Rage, Pirates of the Caribbean, Enter the Matrix, and so on. Each game more based than the last.
Best japanese games not made by sega?
People always shill the sega games for the xbox. Did other japanese companies not made good game for it exclusively?
I liked JSRF more than the first one and the source code is apparently lost. Amped is a fun snowboarding game. Steel Battilion is fun but the control will cost you more than the console. Otogi is great but got a surprise PC port since that list was made. Gunvalkyrie is brilliant but you either love it or hate it. The last Panzer Dragoon game is kind of cool if you enjoyed the other ones. Blinx is a decent 3D platformer. Tony Hawks 2x is a must play for fans of the series. Sega GT and Project Gotham were the best racing games on home consoles at the time but have been surpassed by newer games. Apparently the Shin Mega Ten game is really cool if you speak Japanese.
Xemu is making really fast progress. A lot of games that were really glitchy last year are now totally alright. Splinter Cell Double Agent is playable now, and it wasn't a year ago.
A lot of games on it might not be exclusives, but they were definitively the best versions for virtually anything cross platform. Double Agent is one of those, since on the PS2, Wii and Gamecube versions you can't disable all lights, basically breaking a lot of the level design. They also look like shit on those platforms because of no real shadows.
No. Double Agent had two completely different versions, one for the next gen consoles and PC, and one for the the current gen (Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, Wii). The two only share a vaguely similar plotline.
The next gen version was made by the Shanghai team that made Pandora Tomorrow and had much simpler mechanics. The shadow system was binary, and there was no real sound system like in Chaos Theory. It also had some really terrible levels.
The last gen version was made by the old Chaos Theory team in Montreal, and was a lot more like Chaos Theory, a lot more stealth focused, with a full lighting and sound system. The Xbox version is by far the best since it has dynamic lighting and shadows, like Chaos Theory does on the Xbox and PC. The others don't, and you also cannot disable every light with your gun or the OCP like you can on Xbox, which kind of breaks stealthing some sections. Many levels are also made smaller or cut up into loading screens for the non-Xbox consoles.
I thought Pandora Tomorrow was a cash grab rehash sequel that added nothing but not a bad game. Although the only things I remember is the dogs, the guards putting on helmets if you sound too many alarms and the last mission where you have to kill the enemies who got vaccinated. I am surprised the team that made it fricked up that hard.
PT was alright in my opinion. I think it was just a lot of strange production decisions that led to the 7th gen version of Double Agent being what it is. It has some good ideas and some good levels, so I don't think that it's a terrible game, but it was a much more simplified one and I preferred the old mechanics of Chaos Theory and 6th gen DA. Also horrible on PC, if you run it on 1080p the game softlocks at certain points.

gba being weak hardware for the time was and that's correct
even then, the axim was 299 USD, while gba was 99 USD
only 3 times more expensive but literally 20x better performance, still shit
Whether some hardware is powerful depends entirely on what sort of product it is. The original Xbox is powerful as a console, as a PC it's a glorified Celeron turd.
it depends on what else exist as a option at the same time
gba is weak portable hardware for the size, could have been a lot stronger even if it costed only 50% more
>gba is weak portable hardware for the size, could have been a lot stronger even if it costed only 50% more
The GP32 is probably the closest thing to what you're describing now.
thanks, I was thinking what the early homebrew handheld was called
that's a far better argument, it's a LOT more powerful (CPU alone was newer and clocked 10x higher and 20x more RAM, plus proper 16bit stereo sound with similar battery life to GBA) than the GBA even though and directly competed with it, released on the same year, even when it was released only in South Korea for double the price of a GBA
>The GP32 is probably the closest thing to what you're describing now.
yeah exactly, point into perspective how shit the GBA hardware actually was for 2001, even for the price
>that's a far better argument, it's a LOT more powerful than the GBA even though and directly competed with it
The GP32 didn't really compete with the GBA, as you say it's a homebrew device more than an actual gaming console.
>There's a lot of thing wrong with this post I can't be assed to reply to, but I think the important one is this.
so I guess you're out of arguments
>While other Nintendo handhelds competed on being cheaper, more practical, and maybe having inexpensive hardware gimmicks (GB, GBC, NDS, 3DS) the GBA bucked the trend being more powerful to counter its insurgent competitors.
not the argument here, the argument is:
>gba hardware specifically was far behind, it's more like a 1996 handheld hardware in 2001, it was a deliberate choice, not limitation of actual low power hardware of the time
>GBA was a powerful handheld for the time wtf are you talking about.
GBA was *NOT* a powerful handheld for the time, when compared to handhelds from the time
>gba was not a powerful handheld it was just more powerful than its competitors so it could beat them
It's the same argument.
it isn't and it wasn't
we just posted about GP32 which is a far more powerful handheld hardware wise and a GBA competitor from the same year
nobody is talking about beating anything, no reason to move goalpost, only hardware specs are the argument, re-read the posts I just linked in the post you're replying to, the GBA was weak for the time, that's a fact
>GP32 which is a GBA competitor

I love when people use facts to BTFO dumb nintendoddlers
no need to be rude or shitpost, I'm only arguing about the fact that the GBA was weak hardware, it was still a fun console with good games
timestamps lmao
what about them?

t. has never owned a system without built-in WiFi
Just calling someone a zoomer isn't an argument
We categorize hardware by years, being shit hardware don't make it retro when the PS2 was already out for a year
i feel like ds should be considered retro by now
Any alternative DVD-ROM drive that'll work on this? Any power adapter cables for the proprietary power connector for the DVD-ROM drive?
I'd honestly just ditch the drive if at all possible.
Basically only a genuine optical drive will read genuine discs. The best thing is to mod it with a large drive (you also need an LBA-48 BIOS past 128GB) and avoid using the optical drive. Then load games into it over Ethernet.
And as always, if you're new to this, check your fricking supercap, and get that thing out of there before it shits all over the board.
rulechange was a mistake
I have a Samsung disk tray but it won’t open when a game is removed but if i leave a game in it will always open.
weird how sony went for the "unassuming VCR" look until their 5th console and then went full moron.
Only the PS4 looked like a VCR.
and the PS3, PS2 and PS1
What VCR looks like this?
it's a grey box with a few buttons and a light on it. it looks like something that belongs under a TV and you wouldn't pay much attention to. the PS5 looks like a giant glowing vegana.
The PS5 looks kinda like the original version of the PS3
it's like if the PS3 was two tone and slightly deformed and had troony colored LEDs added to it
Well to be fair, they were already guilty of this with the fat ps3.
Use a PSP.
tell me more about the PSP thing because I have a PSP lying around but with pretty big Sony memory cards like 4 GB
Or, you can be a man, skip most of this shit and perform a hot swap once the drive's unlocked.
It's better to just TSOP flash it afterwards if you're going to upgrade the HDD seeing as you have to open it anyway.

Absolutely classic internet humor.
It's a dreamcast ripoff
>the most powerful retro console
I've had 3 die on me. Piece of garbage console.
you have to replace the capacitor
i've taken apart basically every console made over the last 30 years and the original Xbox is by far the biggest piece of shit i've ever worked with. it really is just a shitty middleware PC crammed into a console case. there was no thought given to the positioning of the components or heat dissipation or ease of access. i took apart a gamecube (what some consider a notoriously difficult console to reassemble) and put it back together by memory with no trouble. this thing though, holy frick, it took me like an hour just to get the shitty face plate off. for a console that's just a bunch of simple PC components, it has the most unintuitive design ever.
Dude the OG Xbox has to be one of the most friendly consoles to work on. I think you just suck.
he mentions faceplate so im guessing hes confused with the 360 - what a tool
xbox chads reporting in
no, i meant the original xbox. it has a faceplate (you'd know this if you had ever actually opened one up). the front of the console is literally an individual piece of plastic, its not fused to the rest of the mold. you gays can suck this piece of shit off if you want to but i've actually opened and worked with the thing and it's trash. you wonder why it has so many disc drive problems, HDD problems, overheating problems, clock cap problems, power cap problems? because it's garbage. it wasn't designed with things like proper heat distribution in mind. it was designed to work for the 5 years MS needed it on market and they couldn't give less of a frick what happened afterwards.
Yep, literally two pieces of plastic the guts sat inside
the cap and heat problems were fixes in later revisions' though, even close to 360 release
Not that PS2s are a paragon of reliability, but I agree Xboxes have always been remarkably shitty design-wise.
I am trying to hack mine but I can not find a working USB stick. I got a 256 MB stick and that one also does not work. I am super annoyed about this shit and if I order some small stick from Aliexpress which takes like 1 month to get here it also will not work. I am fricked.
original oldschool Xbox Media Center + Samsung CRT with some JBLs was such a cherry setup
Arcades in 1996
Handhelds in 2001.
Again, it sounds like you never owned a system before everything between PC/Arcade/Console/Handheld was homogenized. The PSP was considered powerful hardware in 2004 because it's a handheld, it's not competing with arcade PCBs.
gba was nowhere powerful though for 2001 even for portable hardware, it was a joke
see
Ad hominem is not an argument, anon.
Doesn't matter, it's hardware from a specific year, that's it, I think it's pretty logical to assume that small-mobile battery powered devices are never the same level as dedicated AC powered hardware, I have no idea why that should make a difference. It doesn't make something "retro".
GBA wasn't even retro when Dreamcast was, so by /vr/ rules your argument makes no sense.
but its 2d that means it's retron
I would like to qualify your statement by adding that Scud Race is by no means a snapshot of what the average arcade game was like back in '96. It was the absolute zenith of the industry. Other than that, I believe your point still stands, and I think this is good discussion. I appreciate it.
This, Scud race and the model 3 in general were powerful but expensive beasts. In 1996 you had most developers make arcade games for hardware closer to a Model 2 or Playstation, or some good ass 2d power house at the minimum, Model 3 games (mostly developed by Sega themselves) were the top of the line outliers.
What am I looking at?
A piece of shit
so powerful it red rings the moment its slightly above room temperature
Anyone here done the CPU upgrade on their Xbox?
I know that doubling the RAM is a fairly common upgrade but you rarely see anyone showing off their CPU mods
I haven't heard of anyone doing either in at least five years. Do you use your xbox as a kodi box or for emulation? If not why bother?
Nowhere in my post did I discourage him. I like tinkiering with shit too. Go be outraged somewhere else homosexual.
ogxbox forum has what you are looking for
>Anyone here done the CPU upgrade on their Xbox?
Less than 10 people on earth have. It's not a mod you can do without professional tools.
The people that have done it have not and probably will not publish a guide on how to do it. Last I heard there was a project where somebody was developing an adapter board + socket to put compatible CPU in, but I haven't looked into the progress in a year or so.
I have a softmodded PAL 1.6, am I supposed to change the console region to NTSC before playing US games? Or does it automatically switch to 60hz?
Microsoft always wins baby!
>Dead or Alive 3, Hayabusa and Bayman take some small amount of storage space on The Rock's brain, he is somewhat aware that this exists.

Dude loves video games
it's an awful lot like the Colecovision.
>not many really compelling games
>designed to look like a large ugly black battleship
>most stuff on it can be found elsewhere
>reliability issues
>poorly designed and incredibly hard to take apart and put back together
Each game more based than the last.
b***h you didn't even list the good Xbox games, those games fricking suck.
i agree for most people the thing was just a Halo box and the library was really shallow
>released 3 years after the 6th first console release

nice achievement bro
Best japanese games not made by sega?

I know. Already have the pc version of doom. But always liked how first person shooters fell on xbox controller. And SA for the triggers to break/gas
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Xbox-only_games
Any of these even worth getting an old xbox for?
Is there still no emulation?
Deathrow seems cool, but unfortunately multiplayer only?
Wasn't Double Agent on Xbox a gimped version too compared to the next gen versions. I rented it and remember not liking it as much as Chaos Theory.
chaos theory is the best splinter cell game, so any others in the series will not be as good
Unironically Xbox was incredible. Never truly pushed to it's potential. Blew away the PS2 and lamecube
Invented Kodi
