I dont think even RE7, or even Alien Isolation had that kind of budget. Its crazy since EA said the Dead Space series needed to match a certain sales mark to even continue, this team didn't learn from what killed the franchise in the first place.

I'm guessing that it's because suits are dumb as shit and just think that because horror movies are profitable, horror games must also be profitable

            Anonymous

I just don't know where you get the idea. Like EA makes a low budget horror game, it sells niche numbers and the executives looked at that and thought it was gonna be the biggest thing ever and the third game was marketed like CoD. Like I haven't been to business school but I can see the faults in logic here.

          Anonymous

It doesnt make sense when you remember that even big studio horror movies dont even have budgets this over inflated. And yeah movies and games are different, but at the same time they didn't need to hire TV/movie actors for this, and they were using UE4 so its not like they created their own engine either.

The sad part is that its not even money laundering. Because of useless college degrees, especially tech degrees and art degrees, the developers who are usually unskilled and have almost no experience, are being paid way too much for their mediocre work simply because its the "industry standard" to pay a certain wage to people who have been to a government educational facility. All of these developers have "impressive" credentials, but no actual experience or merit. Its the same with how almost all the writers who writer the stories in AAA games have never been published or accomplished anything substational other than having a degree in English and Writing.

Yes, when you shoot the zombies. I am not talking about the death scenes. It has a nice blue od effect that soaks into clothes, a slight meaty overlay on impacts that makes it look like a fleshy hole where the bullets hit, and VERY NICE destroyed head variants.
Honestly the gore in Callisto was the biggest letdown to me. First time I cracked a enemy head open and it was just a solid red interior instead of being a fun empty cavity I was so disappointed

And yeah I thought we were talking about gore in games I'm not comparing the gameplay

I think part of the issue is how often the death scenes in Callisto glitch out so Jacob is having his jaw pulled off by an invisible force as the monster is two feet way having a spaz attack.

Plus I died so often at the start trying to understand the combat it got to the point I just retarded a checkpoint instead of going through the same lengthy death scenes over and over again.

RE is selling well because Capcom put a lot of work into creating a comeback narrative for the franchise, sales don’t just happen in a vacuum. whereas with Callisto they had basically a year to try to sell people on New Dead Space while being aware EA had DSR waiting in the wings to dilute interest.

Callisto was mismanaged at every level and showed the world that:

The developers are unable to meet time restraints (DLC Story/NG+)
The developers aren't able to make stable video games (Performance issues on all platforms, PC studdering issues)
The developers have no backbone (balancing the game per twitter bitching)
The developers relied too heavily on their legacy product that they forgot to make Callisto Protocol it's own independent entity.

Anyone who buys Callisto Protocol is either an idiot or an uninformed consumer. I wanted this game to do well, I really did. But with the facts that are currently known, this game is just another marketing scheme ala Back 4 Blood.

The idea was a prison on the moon who needed to escape a virus infested facility and get back to Earth (sound familiar?)

Yes it was and you'd know it if you had played it (or even watched a good stream). By far the most efficient way to kill a zombie in RE2R is to cut off one arm and one leg.

It was non consequential at best, you could turn zombies into nuggets and stab them to conserve ammo but really the best approach is to avoid zombies in RE2R. Even with the adaptive system, headshots are better than dismembering.

Gameplay can be argued as bad or good, that is subjective, however objectively Ganker didn't make up the fact that:

The developers failed to release a working version of their game on release.
The developers failed to release a finished version of their game on release.
The developers failed to maintain their vision and standards through consumer criticism.
The developers failed to deliver a product they so heavily promoted as a true successor to their legacy product.

Remember how Konami fired Kojima because MGSV cost 85 million dollars? How that was a scandalously high sum? That was funny.

Cannot believe they released it without ng+ and left the rest of the story as dlc. You'd think they would've learned from EA killing visceral. I miss when games released in a complete state.

Imagine being so terminally online and deranged that you think 99.9% of the game-buying public have any idea whatsoever what engine a game is running on, let alone care. Or that it has any effect on game quality. The fact that there are 200 shitty games for every half-decent one is just the modern games industry.

            >game-buying public have any idea whatsoever what engine a game is running on
Wrong, it's very much the case with UE.
All these shiny demos with a lot of media coverage. Tech presentations during GAME conferences (not DEV conferences), putting UE logo everywhere - all this makes UE a household name for the average Joe who doesn't know anything about real gamedev.

And now this shit will backfire with all these non-stop shitty games like CP, people finally will realize that "le graphics is everything" meme is shit, and UE will become one huge red flag for any game, flopping anything on it.
It's already in motion, you can't stop it.

              Anonymous

It won't be that destructive, but yes, there's definitely a chance for UE games to get a bad reputation in the same way that Unity games do. Take the Godotpill brothers.

It had bad gameplay, that was the problem. Being a violent, M-rated horror game was not (although it also failed entirely at being horror anyway).

There are a grand total of 4 enemy types and 1 miniboss which is reused like 5 times. The game is just not good at all.
I really really wanted this game to be good but it's just shit. The combat shouldn't even have seen the light of day, against a boss as long as you're holding a direction you're literally invulnerable to damage, not even as an exaggeration, you LITERALLY cannot be dealt damage as long as you're pressing a direction because you will auto-dodge anything thrown at you.

The game is essentially a QTE when it comes to melee combat and the reason some people were struggling with it is because they couldn't believe how simple it actually was. People though you needed to time it, or that if they swing to your left side you need to dodge right. It's all bullshit. Hold a direction and you're immune to any and all damage. The only difficulty is that the camera locks on (without letting you unlock in any way) and you can't dodge attacks coming from behind. But in a 1on1 Jacob is essentially invulnerable.
It's just a bad game. If you play it you will get some enjoyment of it and it looks nice but the actual game is just not there.

Those are some horrifyingly bad design decisions. Was it some rookie team behind this or what? How do you fuck up the fundamentals so badly?

ROI for large projects is usually 10 years.
        Article states 160m cost.
2m sales at 60 bucks is 120m. By next Christmas they are in a profit. If these numbers are even remotely true as cited by the articles.
Always remember, the old republic was hailed as a flop yet is continuing into its 11th year with content made recently. Everything is called a flop yet these companies keep making games and making money. No flops.

This game has no legs because of the mediocre reviews and bad word of mouth. The DLC(if it's not cancelled) won't be enough to change peoples' minds on it. It will hit the bargain bin very quickly.

On one hand I am really sad because it's a sci-fi horror genre that is signaling the investors that the players are not interested. On the other I am glad that people voted with their vallet and didn't buy a mediocre game oversold by "made by DS creator" marketing tactic.

Why do companies still sell spend so much on marketing? Jfc good shit soreads like wildfire these days. Pay like 2 streamers and a youtuber to showcase the game and you'll be all over the internet. Why waste 3/4 of the budget on commercials when so much is shown for free?

      >Why do companies still sell spend so much on marketing?
Because the people signing the cheques have no idea how to make money, and the people who work in marketing are very good at convincing the people who sign cheques of the effectiveness of marketing.
