I asked this on /vr/ but I guess all the croaks there have kicked the bucket and I got no response, so I'll ask here:
Why did the cars sound like vacuum cleaners in this game? (And every other racing game for that matter).

Devs were too lazy to hire a proper sound design team so they settled for the PS1 era car engine "sounds" that were just made with compressed samples. Underground 2 fixed this by finally recording actual fricking engine sounds.

Not really. I mean, they did sound better than before but they still weren't like actual car sounds and still sounded "weird". It wasn't until the 7th gen when car sounds finally got better and I don't understand why.

They began using pure car sounds instead of compressed samples to fit PS2 and dinky Windows XP PC storage space.

The game would spawn cars in specifically so you would hit them if you did not change trajectory.

Back in the day I remember getting way too annoyed with some of the really long races that I would go to the game files and swap my opponent car folders with the ones from taxis and vans. This would frick with the models and only wheels would remain visible, but they would also become really slow so I'd turn it into an easy win.

like the other anon said, you gotta change your trajectory to avoid those dumbass ice cream trucks. Usually you can predict where they'll appear in the next lap by their position on the previous one.

    >Racing game
    >Actually win, aka. come in first (1st), aka. pass the finish line before everyone else in literally every race, or you're the loser
This is what I've never understood about arcade racers. Why is it that only someone who's a hundred times better than everyone else is the winner? There are essentially no competitions in existence where that happens. Not only that, if those would be commercial competitions nobody would even want to watch them because nobody would care about the winner since the winner would be so much ahead of everyone else.
It would be funny though. Celebrations on the podium. 2nd, 3rd and 4th place celebrating their silver, bronze and aluminium trophies right after the audience is done boo'ing the boring shit-ass winner out of the building.

      >This is what I've never understood about arcade racers.
You already have the key word in there: arcade.
That whole idea came from those coin munching machines where it was an important design decision that a single mistake would force you to pay more, and it took games several years to fully move on from that formula after they moved from arcades to homes.
Funnily enough, older entries in the NFS series like High Stakes and Porsche had career modes where your placing in an individual race didn't matter, in a cup that had lots of races you could even forfeit some of them on the start line if you didn't feel like driving that track, all that mattered was the total score.

I do because it was the first game I ever played but I am in the minority. The zoomie market can be split largely into the two camps of "mainstream" and the "pseudo not-mainstream". Most Wanted 2005 might stand a chance if it weren't published by EA but by a smaller studio and had full workshop support or something like that

Otherwise I'll have to assume people just more expensive versions of the same games for no reason other than that it says "remastered" in the library.

Modern games hardly have "ports" because it's just a matter of pressing the export button in the engine for a different platform. You don't need to port games anymore.

Both the PS5 and the Xbox Series consoles run on a slightly customized AMD Zen 2 system with RDNA 2 graphics chips (Radeon RX 6000 series). The Nintendo Switch is directly built on top of Nvidia's Tegra X1 smartphone chip. The only thing that makes these systems "consoles" is that they're locked down to running a specific operating system that doesn't let users run whatever they want.

I recently played Most Wanted 2011 and I can't remember a single less pleasing experience playing a racing game. I don't even give a shit about the game being not most wanted in the slightest because I love Burnout Paradise but going from that game to having to drive to one of the five fricking events your car can do in the whole entire map for a race shorter than the time it took you to get there was fricking madening. It didn't help the police sucked ass and the race layouts repeated too often. Also what's up with all the parts of the map lifted straight from burnout paradise

You still get buttfricked by the AI zooming past you because it takes a while to accelerate back to your original speed. Good frickin luck catching up to them again, it ain't happening.

      >go so fast while drifting the steering becomes inverted
      >muscle cars past tier one all have lightspeed acceleration making the other two classes obsolete
      >suspension and transmission upgrades make your car slower
      Carbon was something else.

        Anonymous

        Suspension depends of car.

But transmission is mostly due frickhuge gears. But manual transmission can be broken assuming you shift properly.

          Anonymous

Muscle cars need suspension upgrades because god help you if you go into a turn after blasting through a straight away at 190mph. Exotics need it too for whatever reason since blackbox thought it would be a good idea to make them understeer like there's no tomorrow. Tuners seem to be fine without suspension upgrades. Almost all classes seem to benefit from not having transmission upgrades, only a few cars in the tuner class need it due to being underpowered and having way too short gear ratios.

            Anonymous

            >Exotics need it too for whatever reason since blackbox thought it would be a good idea to make them understeer like there's no tomorrow.
It's just for artificial balance. They decided that tuners suck at everything except steering, muscle sucks at everything except acceleration, and exotics suck at everything except speed. I think it should have been balanced so that the exotic class is much more expensive and if you decide to go for them you'll have a hard time affording upgrades.

              Anonymous

Tuners have good acceleration, if you learn to use manual then game is virtually non issue.

But then a T2 muscle can clear the whole game with zero effort.

No. Only thing you get is longer, twistier tracks and harder opponents to deal with. Also more traffic, especially in the drag events. Hope you enjoy the customization and the cars because that's all you get that's worthwhile.
