It's messed up when you realize how old most of his videos are I didn't even realize a lot of them were that old... even ones that looked new are old too
I know the shit he says is generally tongue in cheek and overly exaggerated, but I genuinely fricking hated the knock back in the Castlevania franchise.
Not that anon, I was 18 in 2010, and I had found Nerd's videos early on in 2006 or so. I think AVGN's general appeal is how James is just a dude going through some old games that you don't hear people talk about, with some potty mouth thrown in. That's like two topics most kids are into in one.
Of course, there's also the fact that when it comes to older retro stuff, you hear the major popular releases or controversies, but rarely the stinkers that came and went. Everyone's played some bad games in their youth, so it's fun to watch someone's experiences with those less-than-stellar titles.
AVGN videos are self-contained. You can enjoy them even if you didn't play the game he's talking about.
Also he seems happy to share his childhood experiences with people who are younger than him. Unlike others who act like console generations are a secret club.
You also get a cool insight into older Japanese video game culture and game differences from watching AVGN there.
They're all fun to watch with the Japs but I think Ninja Gaiden has to be my favorite.
The videos on there are the original uploads too, without the movie clips cut out
The montage of comparing screaming movie Rambo to stiff NES Rambo ending on "remember when Rambo fought a giant spider? I don't" still makes me smile
His movie performed well and landed him pull in the Hollywood cinematic world where he had all the budget and prestige to faithfully recreate the horror movies he’s always loved with practical effects and cheese.
Someone sits down and tells him that his home movies actually aren't that impressive, and only get praised because everyone loves cheesy home movies. James realizes he needs to learn actual filmmaking technique, so he uses AVGN as an outlet to improve as a director until he starts making the movie. For the movie he shoots locally, the cast is AVGN characters and it's basically an extra long episode of the show. Uses the movie to flex what he's learned and breaks into the industry.
But this would never happen. One, because he's not that self-aware. And two, he doesn't have that much ambition anyway.
Imagine being a grown man that makes movies that are worse than the average film student. The Head Returns just proved how little he little he actually improved as a filmmaker.
Yeah, basically this.
No idea what he was thinking with that movie. But even if it had some mild success I dont think it would get him anywhere.
Like you said, he doesnt seem to have a lot of ambition.
Exact most fans didn't care for the movie, if Mike and bootsy could act in fricking YouTube vids why couldn't they have been in the movie as his sidekicks? James bs excuse is avgn doesn't know Mike and bootsy, board James does but somehow introducing token Black and token girl(standin for his ogre wife) to cuck him makes way more sense.
In that world did he still go to LA & Hollywood to film it because "that's where movies are made" ? Or did he just make a passion project instead of trying to prove himself as a filmmaker?
AVGN movie was a mild success, he's and honest-to-god independent film-maker, no big break or A24 or whatever. Cinemassacre either becomes a real production company releasing direct-to-video b-movies or James finds one to release small trashy stuff, eventually grows a following and becomes like the takashi miike of the west.
Rex Viper is a mockumentary instead of an actual band
my hair loss has progressed from my temples to thinning of widow's peak and along the right half of my hairline. it wasn't like this even a few weeks ago. it's fricking over especially if my hairline becomes jagged or asymmetrical.
Frick Godzillathon. I wanted a normal monster madness and all I got that here was non-horror shit. Not to mention for the longest time, Godzillathon was the only Monster Madness that was available on youtube so I got sick of seeing it. Now everything is available which is good.
>tfw i'm living in my grandparent's basement with wood paneling on the walls, shag carpet, and retro consoles hooked up to a big CRT TV
shit is insanely comfy I will say so myself.
I've found myself watching his Mega Man DOS/X5/Legends video every once in a while. Not my favorite episode, but I like it.
Probably something workable thanks to the sponsors. Ad rates on YouTube have been going down and down, so it's usually those sponsor bits that keep the actual money rolling.
>4 AVGN episodes this year actually written by james instead of like 12 written by the slobs >two of them were great, one of them was good, most recent was okay
idk what caused james to kick back into gear but thank frick
Realized the only thing he had achieved in life was being ruined and is trying to save it even if he doesn't have the same passion he did for it back then.
So what happen to the guy that wrote the AVGN theme song? He hasn't been in an episode in years and his theme song is now instrumental. Did James part ways with him?
He became a carpenter the last time he was involved with cinemassacre when his attempt at a music career went nowhere past avgn, him and James sort of lost contact with each other over the years since they don't really have any reason to work together anymore as his theme song has been sort of phased out.
[...]
Bimalim never paid Kyle for building the set for the Sega Activator episode (among other things), so Kyle fricked off and cut contact with James "5:40: Rolfe.
Thats a shame. Especially since James started a band recently and he never got involved. Huge missed oppertunity for both parties

I really wish he would get a hair transplant. I didn't think it was that bad a year ago but now it's so noticeable and bad. He's too handsome to be losing his hair. Either that or just shave it. Hell keep wearing the baseball cap. Just stop going bald.
His older videos was so much better. The scuffed audios, the added dub with exaggerated lip syncs add so much to comedy. The shitty lightning also add so much charm and really home-y amateur feel to it, it's so comfy to watch.
In that one disaster of a behind-the-scenes episode he called Super Pitfall a "basic" episode in a negative way, just because the episode barely had any live-action stuff
It's the same problem as Board James and You Know What's Bullshit, instead of making simple board game reviews or rants, he felt the need to make Board James and the Bullshit Man actual characters that he could act as and write stories around
I hate the live action shit. Even going back to the days of dressing up unfunny Mike in goofy ass outfits and doing unfunny impressions was never the reason why I watched AVGN. It was the comfy nature of the Nerd simply talking about games while they were being played on the screen. The comedy aspects were never that great. It was the informative shit that made it entertaining.
He was still using DVDs as late as the Majora's Mask review, you really think he knows how to manage files?
The better question is why the frick he hired Screenwave if they're not going to handle all this technical stuff for him, so he can focus solely on the creative work
I met James maybe like 11 years ago at a Shoprite while going grocery shopping. He was so sweet and yet surprisingly shy for a dude who films himself saying filthy words on the internet for millions of views. Talked to him about metal music and cool horror movies for like 15 minutes. He's the only e-celeb I respect
I saw James Rolfe at a grocery store in New Jersey yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Rolling Rock in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the beers and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each beer and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
anything recorded in 4:3 is guaranteed to be good because it comes from a better time when it was all untamed, forged with passion and no political corrcectness stranglehold
>and no political corrcectness stranglehold
what the frick are you talking about. He never did anything back then that he couldn't do now. The only thing different is that he used the word moronic in the Simon's Quest video from like 2004 but I don't think he used it in any other video since then. Everything else is safe from the PC mob from going after him.
The joke is that he's done every single combination of filth put together in a rant that the idea of it being tiresome and saying something so gentle by comparison is what's funny about it because it's not what you expect. Honestly if he dropped the rant part altogether, it would be better since it stopped being funny back in 2007
>ITS ALL A BUNCH OF BUFFALO DIAREHA DOGSHIT COVERED IN THE PUSS OF A ROTTEN CAT CORPSE COVERED IN CUM JUICE FROM A FRICKING SICK PUPPY THAT SHIIIIIIIT EVERYWHERE
No I became an adult
Until he dies. Motherfricker gets crazy views and it's only source of income. He'd be stupid to ever stop doing it. His video games are fun as shit too,
>Motherfricker gets crazy views
Newer AVGNs don't have longtail views, like his older videos. They only get an initial burst of views, then fizzle out. Every non-AVGN videos barely gets above 200k views. The upcoming years will be brutal for his channel
Why is this guy incapable of creating something that isn’t centred around himself? The narcissistic fricker has made about 10 autobiographical documentaries. Even the “documentaries” he makes that aren’t completely about him, like the mowden one, are basically just travel journals in which he talks about himself constantly. shitty games
that suck ass
that time is coming again
Wished he'd gone more in depth with the gba and ds castlevanias.
i stopped watching a while back. thinking a rewatch through all the golden era is in order starting around all hollow weiners
Almost 12 years ago.
It's messed up when you realize how old most of his videos are I didn't even realize a lot of them were that old... even ones that looked new are old too
I know the shit he says is generally tongue in cheek and overly exaggerated, but I genuinely fricking hated the knock back in the Castlevania franchise.
Fricking hell, this video is almost older than I was when I first watched it.
Zoomer?
I wonder why zoomers like him so much since they don't have much in common with some 40+ year old dude.
James is only a few years older than me so I kind of connected well with his childhood stories.
Not that anon, I was 18 in 2010, and I had found Nerd's videos early on in 2006 or so. I think AVGN's general appeal is how James is just a dude going through some old games that you don't hear people talk about, with some potty mouth thrown in. That's like two topics most kids are into in one.

his original game room was peak SOUL
This. I know it was an apartment, but it felt more comfy than the basement room he has, now.
I need to rewatch the Castlevania series. It was my annual tradition before rewatching the EarthBound video every year.
Feel weeks ago, i became addicted to watching AVGN videos subtitled in japanese on NicoNicotv
>All the jap comments scrolling by when he says "I fricking love Konami"
>asks "what was your first game growing up?" rhetorically
>wave of genuine answers flood onto the screen
>the way they all try to sing along with the intro song
I love japs
You also get a cool insight into older Japanese video game culture and game differences from watching AVGN there.
They're all fun to watch with the Japs but I think Ninja Gaiden has to be my favorite.

HE'S GONNA GROW HIS HAIRLINE ALL BACK
Something about this basedfaced goon always rubbed me the wrong way.
WHERE DID THE HAIR GO
How do you think things turned out for him in the "good" timeline?
His movie performed well and landed him pull in the Hollywood cinematic world where he had all the budget and prestige to faithfully recreate the horror movies he’s always loved with practical effects and cheese.
Also, his hairline didn’t recede.
Someone sits down and tells him that his home movies actually aren't that impressive, and only get praised because everyone loves cheesy home movies. >he doesn't have that much ambition
But he made AVGN movie
Imagine being a grown man that makes movies that are worse than the average film student. The Head Returns just proved how little he little he actually improved as a filmmaker.
The Blue Hole short film he did is incredibly enjoyable to watch.
So deep
Yeah, basically this.
No idea what he was thinking with that movie. But even if it had some mild success I dont think it would get him anywhere.
Like you said, he doesnt seem to have a lot of ambition.
imagine a world where he actually had mike and bootsy in the AVGn movie
Exact most fans didn't care for the movie, if Mike and bootsy could act in fricking YouTube vids why couldn't they have been in the movie as his sidekicks? James bs excuse is avgn doesn't know Mike and bootsy, board James does but somehow introducing token Black and token girl(standin for his ogre wife) to cuck him makes way more sense.
Board James was his best work
In that world did he still go to LA & Hollywood to film it because "that's where movies are made" ? Or did he just make a passion project instead of trying to prove himself as a filmmaker?

For me, it's Godzillathon
>He and Mike didn't like Shin Godzilla because it wasn't campy enough
I miss these, shit was so comfy re-watching them
Frick Godzillathon. I wanted a normal monster madness and all I got that here was non-horror shit. Not to mention for the longest time, Godzillathon was the only Monster Madness that was available on youtube so I got sick of seeing it. Now everything is available which is good.
His sonichu review is an all time classic
I still love that wood paneling in some of his older videos. Feels like something you'd see in your grandparents' basement
>tfw i'm living in my grandparent's basement with wood paneling on the walls, shag carpet, and retro consoles hooked up to a big CRT TV
shit is insanely comfy I will say so myself.
It's unsettling when people say "grandparents" instead of "parents" it makes me realize how young the average person is here.
This is what I see when I think about my grandparents.
Pic is from a family home video recorded in 1955.
Wood paneling felt more like a 70s and 80s thing. They had them earlier but it didn't feel over used like during those decades.
Classic AVGN is symbolic of a more innocent time, a better time that promised a better future, that never came.
His Earthbound review was legitimately great.
For me, it's Swordquest.
Just found out apparently AirWorld is finally getting released in an Atari collection.
Wait, seriously? They should continue the contest, then. Sadly those prizes were probably smelted long ago...
How much money do you guys think he makes per video these days?
I've found myself watching his Mega Man DOS/X5/Legends video every once in a while. Not my favorite episode, but I like it.
Probably something workable thanks to the sponsors. Ad rates on YouTube have been going down and down, so it's usually those sponsor bits that keep the actual money rolling.

Bimmy looking pretty swole here..
I really wish he would get a hair transplant. I didn't think it was that bad a year ago but now it's so noticeable and bad. He's too handsome to be losing his hair. Either that or just shave it. Hell keep wearing the baseball cap. Just stop going bald.
Why did he switch to this stupid cargo shirt?
he brings it up in a recent episode. it's because the old shirt was pretty trashed.
didn't he show off an entire closet full of them at one point?
and it's a fricking shirt, you can spend the $20 on one that doesn't look like shit
So go to Wal-Mart and get another $10 dress shirt.
>back to front combover
stunning, brave
Good episode, I liked the movie clips
First alright episode in a very long while. Seems that he learned how to act mad properly again instead of just yelling.
Why so much talk about his hair always? To care about how other guy looks is a bit too homosexual for me.
losing your hair is homosexual as frick and means you lack testosterone.
Because it's funny
Testosterone makes you lose hair
>Testosterone makes you lose hair
yeah if you're a pussy
>2007-2011 era episode
>Gametrailers/Screwattack logos play on screen
that intro is burned into my mind forever
I recently did a re-watch of the old to new AVGN playlist. You can start to see the enthusiasm and passion dip after plumbers don't wear ties.
James is currently recording the audio book for his autobio. It's gonna be peak James cringekino
IT'S TIME TO TALK ABOUT TROONS!
AND OTHER homosexual SHIT!
LIKE HORMONES!
IT'S A BLAST!
I HAVE POX SORES ON MY ASS!
explain this to me, who is this and why should i care
Is he actually a troony now or is that his "style". Whatever he's doing, he's more ugly now than he's ever been.
>Muh kids.
*Sniff*

lol what level of autism do you have to type this out
I think all James wants in life at this point is to chill with his wife and kids
Rolfe is creatively dead, long live the Nerd episodes of old!
Nothing wrong with that, if the money is there. I hope he has made some dosh.
And direct horror movies
