I think I can see where they wanted to go with this, but ended up botching the delivery. We know that the fog world can be accessed by psychics, brought forth via ritual, and people with only the thinnest of latent ability can still slip between the cracks when experiencing extreme emotional distress. Queue the coof, the worldwide mass hysteria that went with it, and the feelings of isolation that grew and ate into people because they were afraid of getting the disease. Call it a ripe situation for a shitload of people to be stepping onto the threshold all at once.

Yeah, but the story is based in Japan and because of that, will likely have a far more mature approach to the concept. Especially if it is a story dealing with loss and is written by Ryukishi. I trust him to do this story right because he has people to reign him in and his previous works show a good track record when dealing with similar themes. Silent Hill F gives me strong Higurashi and Higanbana vibes especially, which is good because Higanbana is one of his most passionate, yet underrated works.

Everybody in charge of silent hill these days is so out of touch with what made the trilogy so good to begin with. Silent Hill was always Konami's store brand Resident Evil knockoff so it's perfectly fitting that they're still trying and failing to copy it.
Not many zoomers can grasp how to move a character with tank controls, so it's the best bet they got. Besides RE2/4 Remake sales are a good incentive to copy this camera.

What's interesting is that The Short Message is directed by Motoi Okamoto, who is the producer in charge of the entire Silent Hill franchise. So The Short Message is very much the foundation for the future of the franchise, and his particular interpretation of it.
I haven't seen a lot of people talking about who made this game, and it's role within the larger series. (It is a teaser for Silent Hill 5, whatever that is. Maybe it's SH f, maybe it's the SH game that the internal SH team is making, who knows.)

I never was a fan of silent hill really, I played them but they were never great to me and even I can see how israeliteed this franchise is getting, this is bad.
Konami hires Motoi Okamoto as the lead producer for the Silent Hill -series in 2019.
Konami's idea is to give the Silent Hill IP to multiple different parties to create their own version of the series for the relaunch of the franchise.
There are also staff internally at Konami, who love Silent Hill and horror games in general, so Konami starts their own Silent Hill -project
Because it has been 20 years since The Room or any horror game in general at Konami, they decide to start with a smaller scale project to see if they can create a horror title and then with the experience from this project, start working towards a fuller title
They wanted to partner with a developer from Japan, who have experience on working with horror games, to work on the project, so they went with HEXADRIVE, who had already pitched their version of Silent Hill 2 Remake to Konami earlier (also Konami had offered them to port earlier titles, but HEXADRIVE wants to create a new title for current generation consoles).
Okamoto/Konami has the idea/scenario for The Short Message and they hire Kiichi Kanoh to flesh it out. Also Masahiro Ito is hired to create the monster design and Akira Yamaoka as the composer/sound director.
The work for The Short Message happened between 2020-2022 (the developer interviews were done in September-December 2022 and the game had finished by then), but due to reasons such as COVID, the release didn't happen until 2024.
i dont know about any of those except for yamaoka. sh is the product of the auteur of toyama. its basically his work. without toyama, nobody can make any decent sh game. the dude is such a talented man but the higurashi hill will be probably a much better spin off than that and as interesting as sh3 which wasnt toyomas work.

I do kinda like what Konami is trying to do with the SH effect so it can take place in other areas around the world. Setting the game in the same town or just shitty crapshoots around it really doesn't work too well after the first 3 games and becomes more contrived. But the way they handled it is dumb and I don't have any hopes F will explain it well but I'm buying it anyways because it's set in Japan and I'm a weeb.

Before release I was interested in the flower/sticky note theme and was wondering how they'd integrate that into the otherworld. After watching a playthrough, it's apparent they didn't even try and just fell back on the usual rust, grates and blood.
Overall though I didn't hate it. The music was good as expected and the monster was interesting enough. I liked how the cellphone was integrated. The story is another SH2 clone but I didn't expect anything different from Konami in 2024. I think it could've used more horrific imagery and if they're ripping off PT then they should have obfuscated how you get the real ending. I feel like the original plan was your character would keep killing herself until you figured something out but that fell by the wayside and it became a much more linear experience. I'd give it like a 5/10.

4 out of 23 entries to the series are good and one of those was just a demo for a cancelled game. A mere 17% of games with "Silent Hill" in the title are actually good. The last truly good Silent Hill game is over 20 years old now, part of a production pan of a mere 5~ years. There was a 9 year gap between P.T. and Ascension. Of the stuff that's bad, some of it is SHOCKINGLY bad.
This doesn't count the other media either: one film is good, the other terrible, the pachinko machine is awful, all of the comics are awful. Any other crossover material is weak but whatever. Branded merch is usually garbage.
"Silent Hill" is usually a stamp of poor quality. The good games were a fluke in this context. You have a better chance of getting quality from almost any other video game brand name than "Silent Hill".
P.T. was not good and I'm sick of pretending otherwise. It was Slender tier walking simulator garbage.
It set off a shitty trend, but it was amazingly frightening and did a lot with a little. I didn't even want to count it because it's just a promotional thing and I'm not convinced it was ever actually going to be a "Silent Hill" in the true sense, but it was technically a game.
What aspect of it did you find frightening?
The fricking creepy ass wife ghost. Her design was feverishly scary without rethreading established Masahiro Ito tropes (like every other monster in the series), and despite basically being a corpse, little tweaks like her jerky movements and her awkward way of standing made her uncanny as all hell. The general rendering style being so photorealistic added to it. And I get that once you play it and realise there's nothing she actually do to you/any sort of game mechanic that allows a fail state she stop being scary, you have to actually play the whole thing before you realise that. Plus some of the subtle mechanics that were there (events being triggered by where your camera was facing mostly) was pretty fresh.
I wouldn't say it was very jump scare heavy. The more effective scares are when she's just standing there, looking at you.
But Masahiro Ito's monster designs are why people like SH. The wife just looks like any other ghost ever.

The first one. It's a different story from Silent Hill/has a whole different setting at the heart of it, but it's a competent plot with solid visuals pulled from the games. It's worth watching, maybe a solid 7/10 film. The sequel, Revelations, is hilariously bad. It's a direct sequel, but also somehow an adaptation of 3, so it doesn't work from the very beginning.
I'd say that Silent Hill Downpour is good, especially emulated. It was panned when it came out because it ran like absolute shit on the PS3.

The big reveal is that the Otherworld Phenomenon is now public knowledge and world events such as COVID-19 are causing the Fog, now deemed the "Silent Hill Effect", to spread to locations around the globe. Basically this game's story was a glorified excuse to explain why F will be set in Japan instead of rural America.
The cult version of the Otherworld with all the rust and blood seems to still be unknown to the public though.

Silent Hill is split generally into two camps: people who prefer Silent Hill 1/3 and people who prefer Silent Hill 2. The former deal more with the actual setting itself, the cult shit, the who/what/when/where/why of the town of Silent Hill (in this case through the Mason family). The latter, however, prefer SH2's near-complete detachment from the other games as a mysterious place of personal punishment and purgatory. Unfortunately, SH devs have never been able to choose between these either so every Silent Hill game since 3 has been either terrible, somewhat passable at best, or decent but runs like dogshit like Downpour.
Until someone actually decides a direction to take this series, preferably a new direction, Silent Hill will continue to suck dick.
