I played the super metroid and lttp ones.
While i first thought they were amazing, they quickly turned into a nightmare and an enormous waste of time.

They're only good to watch streamers play them, because they just frick the player over constantly in infuriating ways.

It does actually work that smoothly. I do Super Metroid + Link to the Past combo rando co-operatively with a buddy where we share items. It's near instant and it's hosted independently of either game so if someone disconnects or restarts their emulator it'll keep progress.

      Anonymous

I tried it once with a friend, super metroid & link to the past (not the combo, just one guy running SM and the other LTTP)
I remembered where most of the items are on SM and some tech but my friend kind of got stuck on LTTP since he hadn't played it in a while, so we had to make the program spit out some hints. There's even an option to make it give you items if you're truly stuck. It's very cool, everything is in realtime and there's anti-frustration features if someone is holding up the run.
I'd like to try it again sometime but probably with some easy to understand game on my end, maybe doom, KH2, ROR2 or one of the bing bings

It can be a bit of a mind-melter but what I do with a buddy when we split games like that is have a video going showing the other person's game so you can keep direct tabs on them as well.

Nope. The greatness is the original intended design and progression. If you have to pour a bottle of ketchup on the Mona Lisa so it's not "boring" to look at anymore...Maybe just look at something else.

Look, it's obvious you aren't playing games.

Randomizers are pretty fun, you can't do it with every game but it works very well with games like Zelda. It adds replayability
It's basically something like a second quest.

                >Again, if you would have played a randomizer, you wouldn't say those things.
Wrong. Your argument is essentially: People who play these can't think they're fake and gay. You're an idiot.
                >muh streamers
The only reason this shit is popular is that streamers use them. No other form of emulation or whatever else is as popular as randomizers and it's the community on Twitch who did that. Because some people's job is effectively just to play one kind of game for 4-7 hours a day, it becomes very desirable to find ways to make that more interesting and repeatable. Randos are IDEAL for that. Then you can just autistically play "Zelda" all day for your fans but still have a little variety to it. What's really cringe is people who aren't caught in the streamer's monkey paw situation but STILL just play vaguely remixed games from 1993 over and over again.

No, you didn't you delusional idiot.
You're just talking about something you didn't even try.
Nobody even says it's like a new amazing game, it's just a fun mode. Like how some games have a Boss Rush mode. You could argue it's a diluted form of the game as well.
You just keep saying it's garbage for streamers as if your brain has been rotten by twitch.

Zelda randomizers open up the game world. You basically go on a treasure hunt to find the items you need to progress. It doesn't even mix that much up, it's the same dungeons and overworld.
Also some mechanics are suddenly relevant. For example rupees/shops are suddenly important (in the base game you only need to buy a shield and never enter a shop ever again). Grottos become important.
Ice Arrows can be used to melt red ice which is also neat. It's basically a puzzle mode that requires a bit of knowledge about the game

Same. It feels more tightly compact than OOT because you don't have two timelines to jump between and there's less dungeons.
I'm not autistic enough to use glitched logic however, and just keep progression as normal.

LttP randomizer is so good. Almost ever other one I’ve tried it feels shoehorned and unnatural. Probably because games like OoT or Final Fantasy are way too linear so the “random” elements are just like 5 giant chunks that you do the same way, but the order you do the chunks is random. LttP has a flow to it and feels like a real open world game

      Anonymous

I completely agree. It's really crazy how good the game is about item checks. Basically every major item you get is useful and opens up a ton of new things to go check out. You really have to use your entire inventory. It's not like Super Metroid where 99% of the game is open if you find the space jump early.

        Anonymous

Super Metroid is weird because unlike ALttP where there's a few tricks and a few skill gates, mostly it's 100% inventory gated, you *can* beat Super Metroid with very limited tools but your ability to personally execute is what limits you. Suitless Meridia? Navigating lower norfair without Varia? Getting to lower norfair at all without space jump or bombs? Killing Ridley without charge beam? Crossing moat without speedbooster, space jump, or grapple? All eminently possible but heavily dependent on what you can do.

The result is that while ALttP is a routing puzzle SM is more of an execution puzzle on top of that, in a way that I think complements them both.

I can do a couple tricks like vertical wall jumping and the mach ball, but most of the other ones seem way too hard for me. I'm really impressed by the people that can do all the crazy Super Metroid stuff 'cause that shit is not easy. Link to the Past glitches are baby mode in comparison.

            Anonymous

For some ungodly reason it's 'mockball' (because it mocks samus's run speed) rather than 'mach ball' (because it's fast). But yeah, I was at your level for a long time but some tricks like gravity jumping to navigate in water and springball jumping to get extra height are really powerful and very easy. I've only landed the wall-jump across moat once and I'm not stupid enough to go for the speedbooster horseshit like lava dive.

For me, it's not that OoT is too linear. It's just that it takes forever to get anywhere. The LttP world is just so compact. It's easy to get almost anywhere and check some obscure spot, and the runs end up being very short.

He's not wrong. ALTTP is also lighter on cutscenes, so you get more room to explore and do your thing.

          Anonymous

not to mention the LttP rando removes nearly all cutscenes except for:
Aghnaim at the top of Hyrule Castle
Aghnaim at the top of Ganon's tower
Using the book at the Desert Palace

I'm pretty hooked to OoT Randomized. Feels like this game hits a sweet spot in that progression is item driven enough to make big options open up when you find something, but not TOO item driven to the point that it's too rigid or linear, and you can find yourself doing shit in plenty of different orders depending on what items you have access to.

Shuffling dungeons and bosses can also be some kooky shit where you might find yourself fighting Bongo Bongo as a child without a sword.

      Anonymous

I wish other randomizers could capture the feeling that you're experiencing your own personalized adventure, like the OOT one.

        Anonymous

This works because default OoT basically guarantees that NOTHING interesting will ever come out of a small chest that isn't a small key, so it makes the most disappointing thing in the original game the most interesting.

          Anonymous

It's essentially perfect except for the fact that the game has waaaaay too many hidden caves that makes playing it impossible unless you know all their locations. Also having to fight Stalfos under a timelimit as child link without a sword is bullshit (but possible).

Are you using PS2 emulation or the epic games version?

          Emulation, I think.

I've found PS2 emulation to be a crapshoot in general, unfortunately, and I vaguely recall discussion about the KH2 rando in particular not working well on versions other than EGS. That might've just been with the pirated PC copy rather than emulator though. I'm not up to date on the info because I intend to replay the game vanilla first but haven't had the time.

You can't access final boss without burning the thorns, which requires going through grey whirlwind land.

randomize boss locations, lock areas off until you get certain key items, where you get party members, give you the airship (or in the case of Earthbound PSI Teleport) early on, etc..

Free enterprise for FF4 gives you the airship and two random characters (in place of cecil and kain) to start, sets 5 random objectives from the game's major events as requirements to unlock the final dungeon, and then leaves you to it. It works surprisingly well because you end up actually using the game's mechanics fully to do stuff earlier than you normally would.

The Garden of Assemblage mod that everyone uses with it allows you to immediately access every world from a hub. From there you can put items into the pool that limit your ability to visit each world so you end up with a different world progression each time. There's also 8 billion options for speeding up removing gimmick sections or putting different things in or out of the rando pool.

I like randomizers but i rarely finish them. I stop once I get all the key items needed to beat the game. They are also kind of dangerous to play because it's easy to sink tons of hours into one game like a speedtroon.

Take care of your troony obsession anon. There's a difference between having fun with a randomizer and spending a ton of time on a game you genuinely enjoy versus autistically trying to shave off 0.1 second in some gay competition. The time spent doesn't matter, it's if you're having fun or not.

The only ones I've played are A Link to the Past, Megaman X, and Elden Ring.
I ended up 100%ing ALttP for the first time by accident when going through a fairly complicated run. I think ALttP is easily the best rando there is, the world is the perfect amount of open and linear for it, but MMX is a real favorite of mine because you can randomize all movement values, which leads to absolutely fricked gameplay, ranging from moving 3 times faster in the air and moon jumping to having zero jump height and needing charged Shotgun Ice to reach a couple ladders in Boomer Kuwanger's stage. The projectiles all get fricky too, some just fly in all sorts of weird directions and your shots could travel fast when shooting to the left, but slow as balls when shooting to the right, which allows for some very interesting situations where you can lay a slow charge shot as a trap for the boss to walk into. Basically its pure chaos but really fun chaos.

      >you can randomize all movement values
      that sounds absolutely awful

        Anonymous

Its honestly really great. There's not a whole lot interesting you can do with MMX to randomize, so I think whoever made the thing is a genius for making an option to frick with the movement values, it really adds an interesting new challenge if you've already played through the game over a dozen times.

Just that one and the Secret of Mana one. The latter sucked, but the LttP one is fricking amazing. I wish on the next Switch Nintendo would do the Link's Awakening treatment to LttP and include the randomizer in it. I'd probably play that until my death.

I tried the OoT and MM randomizer. First seed was a total bust, with some absolutely asinine item placement, like Kokiri Sword in Ganon's Castle. Second seed I turned on shared items, so anything that's in OoT that I get, I get in MM as well and vice versa. Worked way better, and I got everything in both games for the most part - but I just can't be bothered to go and fight all the bosses now.

I played a crossworlds LttP x SM3 keysanity with a friend a few times. Pretty fun. I like how out-of-the-box you have to get in some spots. But all the glitches you need in harder logics kinda puts me off from it, but I can see why other people like that stuff.

This one is the most replayable to me, probably my favorite randomizer ever next to ALttP. You just need to make sure you use the 'dancingmaduin' option to limit each esper to only a minimum few characters to avoid party homogenization. If no one has tried Beyond Chaos, it's not just a standard randomizer but goes farther to combine abilities to create new commands so you'll always get something totally new every time. But even if you get a crazy overpowered command it's not enough to carry you through the game, you really need to know the ins and outs of the battle system. It's a ton of fun.

Zelda games seem to be some of the best for randomizers, but maybe those are the only games I know well enough to actually play randomized. The LttP especially is great because I've beaten the game at least 20 times in my life vanilla, but the shit is still fun randomized.

LttP rando really fricked me up because I thought I could do the speedrun trick where they hold onto the edge of Moldorm's platform and I ate a load of dicks. Never learned the trick or played it again.

Tunic has a pretty good one made by some of the LttP people, complete with not-triforce hunt. Biggest complaints with it are occasional misleading hints and that laurels tend to appear super early.

Super Win the Game actually has one built in IIRC. I had a pretty good rhythm for a while, but I'd end every (EVERY) run with 10 minutes lost that I could trace back to one routing choice that seemed fully logical at the time. Beyond infuriating. Would still recommend.

Aria of Sorrow (original) and Pokemon BW are probably my favorites. I've lost count of how many times I've played both.

    >Play No Logic OoT Randomizer w/ Entrance Rando like a crazy puzzle game
    >Get stuck
    >Autismo memory remembers seeing ZFG do a trick one single time
    >Look it up and try for 30 minutes
    >Succeed but eventually run out of the time I want to spend on this game
    >Repeat this process
    >Suddenly actually competent at a lot of tricks and skips and can finish my autismo puzzle games (usually don't kill ganon and just stop when I get all the necessary items)

Proudest moment was when my only progression forward was going through Dante's grotto to the windmill exit as child. The ledge after the SoT block is too tall to climb as child and I didn't have bombs to ground jump or hover but I did have bombchus. You need two explosions to get far enough off the ground to hover, so I had to create my own setup running two bombchus along the walls of the room so they exploded at the proper position and time to set up a hover to make it up the ledge.
I want to try out the Dread randomizer as well since I actually found a lot of the tricks used for speedrunning, but the actual act of speedrunning is degeneracy so I never have a reason to play or use the tricks I found.

      > I actually found a lot of the tricks used for speedrunning, but the actual act of speedrunning is degeneracy so I never have a reason to play or use the tricks I found.

I feel the same way, man. I love learning tricks and glitches and I will play the frick out of a game that has speed based medals (like Neon White) but I could never sit down and actually try to speed run a full game. That just seems like way too much and I wish there were more games that had a middle ground for people that like to optimize but aren't autistic enough to spend 2 hours doing a run.

That's why most people start out with short games or subcategories. 2 hour runs are fricking exhausting, especially when you're new and they're 6 hours full of pauses and looking shit up.

Mario 64 16 star is a good one for noobs. Full run shouldn't take you more than 25 minutes and there's a lot of neat tricks to learn.

The randomizer will teach you. You WILL get an important progression item stuck in some obscure location that you didn't even think you could get to.

yes but unless i look it up i wouldn't know it's there. take the grottos in oot for example. i don't wanna have to look shit up

OoT is probably one of the hardest randomizers to learn in the first place because of how well gated everything is behind certain items you'd never know what checks you have available to get at any given moment. It does help that the OoT randomizer is well developed and highly customizable so you can change the settings very easily to help learn new things. Basic settings you only need to know a few certain grottos you can look up, and adding in scrub salesmans, cow checks, or gold skulltulas as you get comfortable with the ones you know of already add a few more to learn each time. You only need to know the bullshit ones nobody knows about like the song of storms grottos in gerudo fortress or zora's domain if you randomize the grotto entrances themselves.

Why? Game either becomes too easy or will straight up softlock

      Anonymous

      >straight up softlock
how to tell someone has never once played a randomizer
pretty much every randomizer has a form of logic that makes it so that you can't get softlocked, unless you specifically enable a no-logic mode that makes everything truly random

I just did 3 ER random runs in a row and started a 4th one. I don't play gachas, but maybe this is the kind of rush gacha players get when they open their prize boxes, or whatever, hoping to see some good shit.

I know that feeling. I was so pumped getting one of those massive bubble horns in an ER randomizer without having to grind for it and being able to use it for majority of my playthrough.
Gotten it a bit more in Pokemon Randomizers and especially in the one Emerald Randomizer that also does sprite colors.

Very late on this thread but are there any good FPS randomizers? I remember spending tons of hours on TF2 2Fort randomizers x10 either dying pretty quickly or becoming a god with OP weapon combos and those servers are barely populated anymore. Preferably something singleplayer.

I think the closest you're going to get is something like Gunfire Reborn or Roboquest where it's a roguelike but the guns and abilities are random.

maybe kingdom hearts 2? the game doesn't have very many obscure checks, and unless you go out of your way to enable the setting for worlds being locked by key items, there's next to no hard progress blocks, just soft blocks based on your own skill.

earthbound's ancient cave rando is pretty alright as someone who never beat the vanilla game, thought it's a bit closer to something like paper mario's pit of 100 trials than a traditional rando.

Been playing a shit load of Hollow Knight rando recently and it's been good fun. Just started a bug dumb grass rando in it, which gives me the big time million checks in a row rush lol. Also a big fan of Aria of Sorrow randomizer.

randomizers only fix the problem of shitty early game, which every game has for some reason. A major part of the appeal of normal play is mastering, preparing for, and rehearsing the different fights. That entire aspect of gameplay is lost in randomization. Too bad everyone is a metaslave so for them randomization is a net positive.

      >A major part of the appeal of normal play is mastering, preparing for, and rehearsing the different fights. That entire aspect of gameplay is lost in randomization

I would say the randomizer actually makes you a better player because you might be going into fights without a lot of your usual equipment.

The appeal of randomizers, depending on the game, is testing how well you know it, figuring out the rando's logic and deducing where to go next instead of going blindly etc.
And also to incentivize straying from the meta, as you say. Making do with what you get instead of the same things every time. That doesn't necessarily do away with the "entire aspect of gameplay".
But the ironic part is that these randomizers develop their own meta when playing them enough times.

It’s the challenge. I still can’t grasp how there’s people out there who like to savescum.

I've never played a randomizer but it seems interesting because I like older games and stuff like lttp. Can you get soft locked in a randomizer?

      Anonymous

Not by default. Pretty much every randomizer has some form of logic to prevent softlocks, although some may have options that let you change the logic to account for things like glitches, or maybe even disable the logic altogether for something truly random (and potentially softlockable).

      Anonymous

Link to the Past is very hard to softlock yourself, but there are times it's very inconvenient if you don't have a sword and run out of bombs. A lot of the more popular randos have beginner modes where you will always find a lot of your important tools early, and that can be a really nice way to start learning. My first LttP rando took me 10-15 hours but now I can reliably do them under 3 even on harder logic settings. I'm rusty as hell though, and never got good at some of the weirder shit.

These randomizers completely ruin the game. Thank about it. If you add all items into a pool, you get super-overpowered shit right at the start of the game while missing out on basic-ass features until the end. The only good one is SM+ALTTP because you have to weigh the progression logic of 2 games against one another.

I love the idea of the OoT/MM combo randomizer. I just wish it was more graceful. Since Ship of Harkinian focused so much on randoshit, I'm hoping they can at least offer a pretty smooth combo rando experience with 2 Ship 2 Harkinian (yes really, that's the fricking codename they're using for MMPC).

It's kind of amazing how fricking shit this thread is for such a simple topic. Ganker truly hates playing video games.

I really enjoy the Super Metroid randomizer. I also really like that it has logic that can force you to have to execute some of the harder tricks that previously were only really worth using for speed runs (which I've never really cared for). Learning Lava Dive to get into Lower Norfair was a b***h but very rewarding when you actually pull it off.
