boomer and oldfag nostalgia rose tinted cope
it depends on whether or not you have a shitty crt
It is good at killing your eye cells
they make older 2d games look better, but you can get pretty much the same result on a good quality modern display with the right shader.
as for 3d games, i personally prefer them emulated at higher resolutions on modern displays, but to each their own.
this, the scan lines will "fill in" details for sprites but polygons look better upscaled
>polygons look better upscaled
Yeah if you upscale the render and output an actual higher resolution signal. If you plug a PS2 into a modern TV and just upscale the 480i signal it’s going to look worse than sprites
Nah it just make you nostalgic for back then
It's mostly for games with sprites, but PS2 is where it gets debatable. If you play a PS2 game on native resolution on a new TV it will look like shit. If you play them on a higher resolution the models will look better but HUD elements and textures will still look bad.
So yeah, they actually compliment older titles but generally people mean older than PS2.
CRT is mandatory for 480i (majority of PS2 games).
Its actually the main reason CRTs are still relevant. 240p on a CRT has already been matched by CRT shaders on things like retrotink 5x pro.
That looks like a shit CRT tho. Heres KH2 on a good one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alA7b1dnkTg&t
wrong, PS2 is where it matters MOST. Go learn how an interlaced format works and why it's shit on LCDs (for games)
wrong
Matters way more for 2D games
its mostly just a low res display making low res assets look better. they have really good motion clarity too. sometimes the devs intended the fading phosphor effect and it looks weird without it
I used to own a KDS model XF-7b, it was shit.
Kinda. I remember ALLTP looking better on my big old Sanyo CRT than on any other TV I had since, that would kinda smooth out the edges of pixels on SNES games, though NES and PS2 shit still looked the same.
there's just a LOT of seething over how good filters on emulators have got. You can literally customize everything about your filter to your taste.
I don't even LIKE fake bezels and the new reflection shader is baller as fuck
>filters
>EVER replicating a CRT
lol no
and just on queue is a seether, probably pissed and shit himself typing out that post
they look amazing, but they look best in motion and screenshots don't really capture them well, especially screenshots of high res screens
>on queue
Just up retarded zoomer lmao
https://grammarist.com/usage/cue-queue/
Go be ESL somewhere else, retard
Why is it possible to see this on modern devices?
Blur
>EVER replicating a CRT
Correct, "filters" look better.
Where’s the filter that replicates the SOVL though?
the soul is inside me because I am near 40. Zoomers do not have this and this is why they will NEVER enjoy these games the way my peers and myself did.
>40
>still having a soul
Get a job, hippie
Can only imagine how good these shaders look in 4K.
Lmao wtf, castlevania has tryhard dialogue like that? I thought it was just "kill the bad vampire"
In Aria of Sorrow, you discover that now that Dracula is dead for good there is an imbalance in the forces that have a control over the world, you literally cannot have good without the bad, if there's no Dark Lord (someone who sides with the force known as Chaos) committing evil deeds every once in a while then the holy powers of God weaken. So it's not that Dracula was a constant because of how strong he was, even Death itself did not just serve Dracula because of some feign sense of loyalty, Death serves the primal force that is Chaos, and Dracula just happened to be the Dark Lord exercising the will of Chaos. Dawn of Sorrow ends on an uncertain note about the future of the world with no Dark Lord being present, but Konami decided to shove the franchise into the trash when things were just getting good.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
sakamoto
It's absolutely and categorically not a myth. Older games were made for those TVs and they look like unadulterated cow shit without them, or without shaders in the case of emulation. 2D sprite art looks particularly bad without
If you are serious about retro gaming a CRT is a requirement.
I have a trinitron 32in with component and it dunks on any emulators and shaders I have tried on my PC.
Shaders are like what zoomers THINK CRTs looked like not how they actually do.
I am older than you, zoomlord. I am sorry configuring a shader was behind your abilities.
Poorfag who plays on his phone detected
>you're poor if you don't play old vidya on tech junk people give away for free
Unironically yes because onky people with ample space, ie houses, own CRTs
that's a hilarious cope, especially when you consider old vidya doesn't even look good on the 27 inch flat screen behemoth crts
it's a zoomer LARPing. He thinks they all look the same and all CRTs are the same.
You're going to want to avoid a TV like this for systems like the NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS1. These "HD-ready" CRTs process an image much like a modern LCD HDTV and are not suited for retro gaming.
ESPECIALLY a fucking 32 inch on what res these consoles are outputting.
Like I said, this guy is LARPing and made up some shit he thought sounds good OR he's a real fucking idiot LOL
and light guns don't work on the 32 inch models. Emulation is objectively superior.
>and light guns don't work on the 32 inch models
Is this bait? Only a zoomer would be this retarded.
>zoomer doesn't know and is trying to bluff his way through it
LOL
32 inch Trinitrons are usually the 2004+ model, and those are the onces marketed as 'HD' ready. They have severe input lag, too.
the best consumers CRT on the market is an early 00s sony trinitron and it comes in 32in
KV-32fv300
Don't be a nonce anon
wow looks like shit looks like filterfags are right
lmao retard zoomer doesn't know about CRT photography
nah looks like shit unless
were lies?
You *can* take good CRT photos, but for an average person just pointing and pressing a button on their phone, they're usually not going to get a good one. Hence the difference between that shitty Paper Mario image and the other two.
i have that t.v.
It's the third worlder extravaganza, everyone had one. Thank god i have money for a good monitor and T.V.
I promise you he has a 2004 model if he even has one in the first place, which is why he was told to post it he won't because he doesn't have one, but seeing it was a shit model for emulating is worth the lols to wait for
yes for anything that's interlaced, specially ps2 games with fucking field rendering
>that red tint
your tube is dying retard
most CRTs don't even have HD capabilities, they still only do 480i which looks way better on smaller TVs, even though most don't even have component input.
fucking destroyed
>zoomer instantly thought of phones
yup, it's a zoomlord. moron is probably eagerly awaiting the next remake from the 90s so he can get in 'on' it.
You also don't have a 32 inch Trinitron; you just namedropped the first thing Google showed you.
Timestamp it if you're not a lying pussy, gay
>component
Yikes
>he doesn't use retrovision component cables on all his classic consoles
ngmi
If I’m playing a console from the 90s, I’m going to use technology from the 90s. If you’re going to use modified modern hardware you might as well emulate at that point
None of this matters to people who actually play video games.
you post frogs
you don't play video games
>he doesn't know
This. Put that chrono bro on a SNES EMU with your favorite filter or lack of filter and just play the game.
CRTs are great for N64/SNES and NES games but it's a pain in the ass.
I don't know how big your screen is, but here's a side by side. Because I am on a 3440 x 1440 and I sit a good ways back, it really takes something jaggy and makes it look super smooth.
There are tons of options so you can find something that works well for your set up or something that mimics a particular model or brand of CRT.
You decide zoomer
>sharp CLEAN pixels vs blurry mess
Ok boomer lmaoooz enjoy your fat dumb boomer box!
L0L0L
S O V L
It's an inferior display designed to look "better" by virtue of making it hard to tell what the fuck you're looking at, you could achieve the same effect by rubbing vaseline all over the screen
PS2 and above is debatable
N64/PS1 and below is absolutely better when viewed on a CRT.
I'll add onto this however.
Most flat panel displays cannot handle interlaced video for shit, so for PS2, Xbox, and GameCube you may still prefer a CRT in these cases.
depends on the game. the input latency is definitely lower. also pixel games were designed to take advantage of crt imperfections. best way to play fighting games and schmups.
>I have a 32 inch Trinitron
has the same energy as
>I have a Ferrari but it's in the shop right now
So are 32in trinitrons good? I am confused.
They are. It's just that a bunch of people buy overpriced, damaged sets then never touch them again besides the occasional post for vapid internet points. Or they just don't have them at all, which is what the Ferrari in the shop comment might have been about.
>my gf lives an hour away, etc;
It's more like
>dude i have a classic Lamborghini
>the classic Lamborghini
true
>all this cope
It's fine enjoy your phone and laptop emulation your mom bought you for college.
Not everyone has the luxury of space for a CRT.
>Screenshot 2023
bro your timestamp?
>and this is my luxurious tranichud mom makes me keep on the floor in the attic
>bet you poorfags feel pretty stupid now
KEK
fucking Nostradamus over here
I'm moving to Japan to study CRTs. I'm going to be a CRT restorator and a pixel curator.
CRT Joe sama
you fuckin Tell him fellow CRTer
I'm pretty sure they're just too europoor to get a decent working CRT and all the old Consoles. I'm collecting right now before theres a huge boom.
I mod and put in flash carts in any older console. or emulated Disk drives (ODE) so i can just put on a micro SD but basically ive got
Gameboy Color, GBA, DS and 3DS, PSP and Vita (modded with IPS screen and a flash cart), Sega Saturn, Dreamcast (modded with ODE and SD card) Super Nes with a flash cart. PS2 (with FMCB and a 500GB HDD for all the classic games i could want MGS3 and the GTAs and more) a Modded Wii and Wii U and PS3, some mini consoles like the SNES and the PSX and genesis. Then the modern consoles. PS5, XBX and (if you can call it modern) Switch.
I learned to Solder and mod on my own. Its an amazing hobby and as i get older (im 33) i realize its good to have a hobby that interests you, ive seen so many 65-70 year olds doing nothing but feeding ducks at the pond and going crazy. Im a wage slave so im going to covet retirement to finally be able to get through the absolute mountain of backlogs i have.
>fellow CRTer
the guy was posting shit he found on google images, that's not his CRT
>before theres a huge boom
nobody tell him
tbh there was already a big boom of it during COVID, but i started before that and have still gotten some good deads with thrift shops and Ebay. You can get cheap systems for like $50 beat up and just mod them if you're willing.
Heres some i did by hand.
No need to be lazy or scared. Its easy peasy lemon squeezy.
>during covid
when people were locked in their homes, getting government gibs to buy useless shit with and we weren't in a recession
also garden gnomes at heritage auctions were inflating the price of vidya and shill bidding on their own games to alter public perception of value. they're facing a lawsuit over this.
Bro why are you devolving this into something with garden gnomes, who cares. they've always been long nosed fucks trying to fuck you out of a dollar, youre going to get mad and not enjoy video games because some garden gnome fuck made you pay $5 more?
Look i get it. But just actually LOOK. you'll find shit all the time on Ebay or even fucking Flea markets.
Unless you're an active hunter of old consoles like some people who go to every garage sale and open house looking for shit to grab you're not going to get anything for free. Yes what they do is wrong. No it shouldnt prevent you from hunting down a console you've always wanted to play and do it.
Heres the SNES, dreamcast PS2 and N64
>bro why are you bringing up the fact the retro gayming boom was inorganic and started by heritage auction shill bidding on their own copy of super mario bros. and game journos making article after article about it selling for a million dollars and now everyone knows this
>Unless you're an active hunter of old consoles like some people who go to every garage sale and open house looking for shit to grab you're not going to get anything for free.
PC CRT + emulation, i get everything for free lol
I don't collect retro games because if I cared that much about playing on real hardware I would just buy a modchip or flashcart instead of looking at flea markets and old people's attics
because you're investing in a fake market created by two garden gnomes bidding on their own video games. i don't know why pointing that out makes you so defensive about it.
He’s collecting for the sake of having the games, not playing some imaginary market. What you’re talking about is only superficially related to the topic.
I too keep my gaming monitor at an angle on the floor for optimum long comfy gaming sessions in the corner
It's a meme spurred by zoomers, t. zoomer
Boomers have the high pitch whine ingrained into their minds and are traumatized by CRTs they don't even wanna think about them
I don't remember that, but I do remember playing Sonic the Hedgehog on a fucking tiny black and white piece of shit
FUCK CRTs
PS1 or earlier and some PSP ports? CRT filter
PS2, PSP, and later? Smoothing filter and up-scaling
I don't give a FUCK what retards on Ganker say, smoothing filters are the shit
>Feels really comfy though.
That's the main difference.
Yes it does compliment older games, but mostly games with sprite art designed for CRTs see the main benefit.
3D games don't benefit quite as much.
>3D games don't benefit quite as much.
I'd argue PS1 and Saturn games are only tolerable on a CRT. They looks fucking awful on anything else.
Possibly. Especially if they are games with low resolution textures. Once you get 480p games like Kingdom Hearts in the OP the effect of CRTs starts to diminish.
But the most pronounced differences are in sprite based games designed for CRTs
Show me a good vector crt simulation. Protip: you can't.
Myth. Compare the HD remaster on an OLED to this eye cancer.
In my personal experience, CRT shines when you're displaying 60 FPS content on it.
30 is the same as LCD and lower stuff like PS1 FMVs are actually worse, because the motion clarity actually hurts more than helps.
Things like improving pixel art etc kinda happens up close, but from an playing distance its not very different from some basic ass bilinear filter.
Now the actual motion quality (when running a 60 FPS content) is just unbeatable.
Visually, yes, they absolutely do. Seeing the same system, running the same game, on a CRT and an LCD side-by-side I can't believe you wouldn't see the difference. It's more than just that, though. Playing on a CRT is a whole package of visual and audio experiences. It is, as you said, comfy.
Shaders are good too, though. Just don't get bogged down in adjustments are comparisons. You can spend the rest of your life researching and changing values in a fucking menu. The goal here is to play and enjoy some games.
>LCD
are we back in 2010?
"LED" is just LCDs with led lights behind it.
We never left.
Are you going to argue that an LCD is better, then!?
It's been so long since I've purchased a screen I actually forgot the change to LED.
