Disembodied when cloud tossed his ass into the life stream which you wont see until Clouds memories get fixed. Jenova kept him from real death and his body is reforming in the northern crater.

A more plausible and in character aspect is that Jenova absorbed his body as her head fell in with him and is reconstructing herself in his image just to frick with people like she did to the Cetra years back.

I think her mind is gone beyond some primal hunger and Sephiroth has taken over. I guess its the same thing. If so why did we fight Jenova synthesis as a boss before Sephiroth in the original.

I mean if you were a parasitic mastermind whose cells can reform and basically be immortal, wouldn't you want the people looking to destroy you think you were destroyed before looking for the "big bad"?
Also There is literally zero explanation as to why Sephiroth becomes a giant hulking monster and then a huge angel missing his entire lower half of his human body other than "he just can". On top of that after Safer Sephiroth the last fight is a shirtless Sephiroth inside of Cloud's own mind, suggesting Cloud destroys the last remnants of Sephiroth but his body was infected with Jenova cells. And many times stated in the OG game Jenova is capable of taking on whatever form it sees fit.

morons who don't read dialogue and don't read developer comments have said this for 27 years. It's never been the case. Hojo explains it in the game - the reason all the Jenova cells are converging at the northern crater instead of at Jenova's main body is that Sephiroth has taken control over it.

Pretty much this. Sephiroth was part human and part Jenova. His human part is long dead and has returned to the life stream, while the Jenova part has reunited with the rest of Jenova. She has also gained his memories and what not.

That said, Jenova is taking on the appearance of Sephiroth to frick around with Cloud. She also takes on the appearance of Glenn when she fricks around with Rufus. Cloud and co. apparently don't realize this yet.

Sephiroth is dead and has returned to the lifestream, but his consciousness has been assimilated by Jenova. Sephiroth is therefore still sentient, but as Jenova. Compare it to uploading a human mind into a machine.

It's hard to say. Given the context of what the lifestream is, how it rejects alien life, and the events at Nibelheim one could surmise that Sephiroth fell into the lifestream with Jenova's head and he, himself, has been kept in Limbo like the Gi have been this entire time while Jenova has been wearing his skin like a meat suit and has been manipulating everyone to believe Sephiroth is alive and behind everything.

Lifestream swept his body away to the north crater and froze him in the ice there, in the same way the Planet previously contained Jenova's remains.

He is alive in stasis inside a crystal, with half his body missing because Cloud nearly cut him in half in Nibelheim.

In the original, he spends five years subsuming Jenova to his will so he can control her headless body that was stored in the Shinra Building, shapeshifted to his likeness.

In Remake he's instead controlling people who have Jenova cells in them (mainly SOLDIERs), but it's essentially the same deal. Though there may also be a second Sephiroth from the future at work, that's really just a fan theory and I hope it doesn't pan out.

  11. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

Well yes and no. You never actually encounter the real Sephiroth until the very end of the original FF7, every instance of him you meet before then are parts of Jenova. In the original he fell into the lifestream and found his way to the northern crater inside a crystal.

For Remake/Rebirth, unsure honestly. The Sephiroth here seems to work outside of a lot of the traditional rules. I think the Sephiroth we fight at the end of Act 1 might be some form of a true Sephiroth since he knows more about the "timelines". Though it honestly depends on how they play the new timeline stuff. Lots have argued that it's not exactly a second timeline, more like false memories of the lifestream.

      >I think the Sephiroth we fight at the end of Act 1 might be some form of a true Sephiroth

He's still made of Whispers, so it's a memory Sephiroth controlled by his spirit in the lifestream if anything. So much for never being a memory.

Yeah, very possible that he's one of those false memories of the lifestream I mentioned.

The genetically enhanced but not immortal supersoldier Sephiroth was fatally wounded and barely standing, and fell into the lifestream while holding the head of a 10 000 year old immortal telepathic alien shapeshifter that can survive even when chopped to bits. I wonder which one came out on top, must be the guy who died. There's no way the shapeshifting alien who devours the life energy of planets would've assimilated Sephiroth's dying but genetically compatible body and decided to devour the life energy of the planet. It especially wouldn't have assumed the form of someone who is guaranteed to intimidate Shinra, provoke Cloud, or trick Hojo into assisting it. And don't pay too much attention to the fact that Sephiroth has become rather impassionate and robotic in contrast to the petulant and angry man he was just before his death.

I think ShinRa is more advanced at their peak than the Cetra ever were. Materia and its derivative technologies would always be limited to individual spellcasters and their personal MP reserves, which might be fitting for some use cases (SOLDIERs use it) but Mako is genuinely boundless magic sci-fi juice that can do anything.
It's important to remember this. Materia can almost do anything, but it's limited to traditional magical invocation. Mako can do literally anything.
That's why Sephiroth can go toe-to-toe with Jenova spiritually: he also has Mako infusion and is one of the most powerful beings the universe has ever seen as a result. He has the canonical special sauce.
Likewise, you can't underestimate Hojo's scientific prowess. They made that clear with Crisis Core. Hojo, with machines, is more powerful than the Cetra at their height; Sephiroth and Cloud are more powerful than that still; who knows where Weiss and Nero fall on the overall ranking, but it shouldn't be underestimated either.
I know it feels like massive DBZ powercreep but to me it was always justified by the fact that FF7 is a real "end-times" depiction. The world is more on the brink of destruction here than in most FFs. That "Now is the time of monsters" type of atmosphere justifies powercreep. If you think about it, places like Costa del Sol and Gold Saucer further that - think of the Weimar Republic before WW2, or America.
