It's really bazaar that people feel attacked by the games wanting you to play with some kind of thought and to manage your time well. People really are just allergic to any modicum of challenge and this is fricking Pikmin. It's about as entry level strategy as it gets, but not to an insulting degree. If time and management scare people that much, they got more things to worry about than Nintendo needing to dumb down games for them.

Pikmin 1-3 are all great games but the mechanics filter normies and morons. Instead of allowing you to customize the game, they just removed anything that was difficult. They should just give you the option of turning the timer off, turning auto aim off, and allowing enemies to have their HP back in higher difficulties. They already give you an unlimited rewind, so why not more difficulty options for everyone

I bought the game last week and haven't touched it yet. I'm still tormented over this only 3 pikmin type out at once bullshit I keep reading about

I guess it doesn't matter since Purple pikmin are back and are the mvp anyway unless they changed that

      Anonymous

It really doesn't matter that there's a 3 pikmin limit because the way the game is designed now you are always near your base becaus you can move it around the level. So worst case scenario you walk 4 seconds back to get some other type.

        Anonymous

This and you get to re choose at the start of caves. The Game doesn't really let you make a bad decision in your set up.

      Anonymous

The 3 type limit doesn’t matter much since you’ll pass by a base pretty often and you get an opportunity to reshuffle your team when you enter/exit a cave. The only time I missed it was when I’d want to take, say, 2-3 purple Pikmin for hauling treasures in addition to a squad that covered as many hazard types as possible, just in case I needed them.

Without caves the pikmin type limit means nothing because you can just sub them out from the onion.

So my only assumption is you are talking about caves here, in which case we look back at 2 and ask how many require more than 3 types.
Well, very few. There are like 5-6 total that "need" more than 3 but you get some types or bulbmin inside several of them so in almost none is the ability to take more than 3 types relevant.

              Anonymous

It doesn’t mean nothing though, when the game has more overworld gameplay than 2
You often don’t need more than 3 in a lot of the games but being able to take more than 3 types can make things more diverse and raises the skill ceiling

              Anonymous

You can have all 8 types out in a cave, which is the hilarious thing.
You also get to hand pick the amount of each pikmin you want before delving inside.
              It's a literal nonissue.

I feel the opposite, 3 had great bosses overall but most in 3 have been weak, most of them feel like regular enemies (and some of them just straight up are resized regular enemies) and even most of the returning ones feel very unthreatening because they got left behind mechanically (Man-At-Legs in particular looks intimidating until you realise it's almost literally incapable of hitting Winged Pikmin).

Groovy Longlegs aside, 3 has way better bosses. Sandbelching Meerslug and Quaggled Mireclops are still GOAT. Water Wraith is still #1, but not because of the fight itself. The fight is kinda shit, but everything before hand was kino.

Why is Ganker trying to deflect all criticism of the game, instead of discussing its flaws openly? Do they not care about the franchise? Just because 10 years have passed since the last installment, you shouldn't just accept everything Nintendo shits on your plate.

      >Just because 10 years have passed since the last installment, you shouldn't just accept everything Nintendo shits on your plate.
Newsflash anon, if the game is "good enough" to most people they will just accept the flaws and be happy that their franchise that's been dormant so long is back. Do I agree with that mindset? Not necessarily, personally I was somewhat disappointed with 4 and worry about the direction of the series, but why many super fans are happy about their game series continuing to get new titles shouldn't really be hard to grasp. Also that complaint about the bosses is moronic, there's other more relevant shit one could list as a negative, like the lock-on.

I feel like I don't really need a 5, unless they do something crazy like setting it in mostly urban environments.
There's a point at which it's like "fine, this series can end. We don't need to make the same game again, and it's probably reached some kind of mechanical plateau by now".

This but only if they do minor improvements and not a complete revamp. 1's controls are perfectly fine for what it is, it doesn't need 3 or 4's controls. It just needs 2's pikmin AI, 3's pikmin cycling, and bug fixes. Maybe add a Louie mode since having 2 captains is pretty fun even if 1 isn't designed for it, and a mission mode, maybe even some in-game cheevos to incentivize beating it in less days.

I never bought the Pikmin universe being post apocalyptic meme. It's just an absurdist bizzarro Earth. If anything, it's supposed to give you a sense of how alien familiar things would look if you were an alien visiting Earth.

        Anonymous

I dunno man. If Earth was simply "Bizzarro Earth" Then why is there a bunch of human crap but no humans, or really any traditional wildlife? We're clearly operating in areas where humans used to be, yet there's zero indication that anything bigger than a house cat is left on Earth.

Surely we would have witnessed humans from a distance, walking around, in their homes or operating vehicles. Am I saying I want that? Not really, it goes against the vibe of being trapped on a alien planet with no help. But that's why post apocalyptic Earth worked. It answered that question. Now it's like
        >There are humans, but they're like, always off-screen, ya know?

          Anonymous

It's like in A Bug's Life where everything is so small, it's just insignificant to humans. How often do you pay attention to some beetle scurrying around on a lawn?

Omg I'm so fricking irritated they put a kitchen level in for the cutesy "oh look imagine cute pikmin in my home or garden! Buy the merch". Ruins the post human regrowth vibe I loved. At least it's ignorable. It actually fits the rebranding to retcon the morose post apocolypse vibe given they leaned so heavy into just HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY.

I think part of the issue with newer characters is just context. Olimar doesn't have a lot going on but seeing how thoughtful and optimistic he remained at the end of each day made him likable. You actually PLAY as him, too. So seeing that your goal was represented by a person who didn't feel like a cardboard cutout was nice. He's the only character in Pikmin 1 and in Pikmin 2 they made Louie and to a lesser extent the president as contrasts.

Pikmin 3 and 4 have more characters and they all agree with each other all the time. You could keep the dialogue pretty much the same and shave the cast down to Shepard, Collin, and Dingo, then make the player actually play as them, and you wouldn't even have a quarter of the complaints.

is not really memorable (something that even 3 got right)
Lmao hilarious considering I still remember 2013 Ganker complaining that Pikmin 3 music was sounding like shit from Animal Crossing and absent of the "ambience" from 2.

      Anonymous

because on Ganker the moments flaws become the norm to discuss you get shitposters that spam the threads with the flaws to get a reaction out of fans and then you get counter-shitposters that insist it's 11/10 and you're a mindbroken snoy. I don't want Pikmin threads to end up like the Zelda threads.
A game can still be flawed but really, really enjoyable in spite of those flaws. Pikmin 4 is certainly that case example. But the anonymous and high-speed nature of Ganker means that nuance ain't usually happening.

    >So, the first idea was that it would be interesting to have the player control a Bulborb, one of the native creatures, and have it chow down on Pikmin. The controls would be simple, yet give a sense of satisfaction to players. Above all, it'd be visually striking.
    >Are you serious?! Controlling a Bulborb would've caught people's attention for sure.
    >Stemming from this idea, we considered letting the player ride and control various creatures in the story, but it became difficult to weave it all into a coherent game. Ultimately, we decided to add Oatchi as a partner creature that the player could switch to from the main character.

Oatchie's rush attack and the auto lock on feel overtuned to me and I hope they can add more options for them via patches, or fix them in a sequel, but beyond those nitpicks I don't even understand why the streamlining pisses so many people off.

Pikmin 4 is way bigger and broader than the other games, to the point they straight up have an entire sequel to Pikmin 1 that's practically the same length as it built in as a side mode. Moving bases is necessary because the maps are significantly larger and they don't want Pikmin taking all day to move a treasure. The Pikmin limit lets them keep all 9 types in the game and design puzzles around them without having 12 of every kind with you or just cutting half of them from the campaign like 3 did. You need all the Pikmin to cling onto Oatchie because you do a lot of 3D platforming in this one and nobody wants to do that with 100 bodies as your hitbox.

4s definitely on the easier side of the spectrum in the main game but the only reason it's even able to expand Pikmins premise as much as it has was because they made manipulating them less fiddly and gives you more ways to solve tasks. It's cool when Pikmin 1 puts so much emphasis on getting the little morons over a single bridge because you only have a few objectives in that game and it's 3 hours long, it's a very raw take on the seeies. Pikmin 4 is 30 hours and I have better shit to do because Doc is asking for more leaflings and I'm trying to get onto the kitchen island and there's still 65 more treasures in this area.

Maybe if the hub built up into a small refugee town over time instead of everyone just loitering around with their quest icon over their head theyd have had more material to work with. The Koppaites join the scientist at a makeshift lab as assistants, theres a little town guard led by the cowardly dude, do what TotK did with Lookout Landing.

Itd also solve the hub becoming increasingly difficult to navigate as you need to remember which create a character had the quest you wanna get the reward for.

I like the more content, really dislike the dialogue though. I missed when the games had more of a secluded/lonely vibe. 1 obviously had this best but I still felt it a bit in 2 outside of the ship. 3 and 4 force characters talking non-stop even during gameplay, dislike it greatly for the series.

I don't get how people find 3 to be perfect gameplay. The camera controls being nearly non-existent instead of having multiple modes like 1 and 2 had it was annoying in 3 and even more-so the lack of swarming controls opting for a charge makes it so I can't control where my Pikmin are running so they have the issue of getting stuck on corners just to idle more than ever, it felt like it was going backwards in gameplay with some of these things. Glad Pikmin 4 fixed some of these in ways with way more camera controls, Oatchi making the Pikmin swarm a non-issue to a fault I'd argue and while I didn't mention it tracking where Pikmin are on 3's map was shit due to it being overly detailed but 4 simplified it again so things pop out more again like 1/2 did.

People who like video games are no longer the target audience of video games. This had two effects:
    1. Designer priorities have shifted, the goal is no longer to make engaging or even fun games. The goal is to make unobtrusive games that feel good to play and take up time
    2. Newer games are far more likely to sell more than older games, regardless of other factors, because there are more people buying. This particular point makes how much of success is due to changes vs marketing difficult-to-impossible to truly know

In the prior games it took a few nights, it didn't happen immediately to an unreasonable degree but it didn't also never happen. The fact it never happens and only does when reentering a cave you already 100%ed onto the point the captains have to make mention of it is super questionable design from both a newcomer but especially a returning player. I wonder why they made this decision, it really only discourages populating more Pikmin eventually outside of pellet posies and gives the late/post-game abilities even less use than they already have.

I sort've feel it when facing a boss with wanting to do it perfectly, and I'm sure with the emphasis on effeciency and Dandori in the script that perfectionism is what drives this No Losses drive.

I would say it's actually less casual than Pikmin 3. homies actually died in this game for me. Lost nearly 400 by the time of completion and I don't think that counts what I lost in Dandori challenges.

      >Pikmin 3
      >pikmin die

      >pikmin die
      >farm some more using your infinite time limit
      WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW SO HECKIN HARD

If 3 was easy, which it was, then 4 is a literal youtube let's play. Reminder that the game even lets you skip dandori missions which is the game's only potential roadblock, because the average tendie eats glue. That's not even counting the damn rewind feature

I'm the one baiting when you claimed that 4 was harder than 3?
Reminder that 3 also has spicy mode, meanwhile in Pikmin 4's hardest difficulty mode, enemies don't even fricking respawn

If your Pikmin died because you were too moronic to understand a simple telegraphed attack, then the game gives you the option to rewind a few minutes OR if it's in a cave (which you most likely are because the surface is completely harmless) then you also have access to the glow pikmin seeds that you've been hoarding the entire game

            Anonymous

You're replying to a different guy. Yes. I hold that 4's individual encounters are tougher than 3. It's a classic Nintendo splitting the difference philosophy. You can rewind or just bear with it and I prefer the latter because it saves overall play time. You can choose to just walk around in Mario Odyssey if you want but it's not even half as fun as stringing movement together. Likewise unless I make a huge frickup then the time it takes to rewind and troubleshoot just isn't worth it unless I'm actually gunning for platinums in dandori challenges. Me being able to endure less severe punishment doesn't really compare to the actual scenarios being more interesting.

No, the dog and inventory menu trivializes all of that
Facing a strong enemy? Throw a carrot to freeze it. You can buy them so you'll always have a full inventory of them
Facing against an enemy with strong AoE attacks that can insta kill all your pikmin? Who cares, the dog lets you straight up control all of your fricking pikmin
You're god awful at vidya and still let your pikmin die? Just replace them with glow pikmin lmao
There's also stun spam where you don't even need to use pikmin unless it's some enemy that is too high to reach

The game is fricking braindead easy for fricks sake

4 is harder than 3 if you ignore 99% of its mechanics, delete your save data each time a pikmin dies, beat all maps in one single day, melee every enemy with Rookie instead of throwing pikmins or using the dog, and get platinum in every single dandori mission without actually using dandori because that's tryhard shit

Actually, while they're called Emperor Bulblax they're gimped version of the final boss of 1 (and really, they are still treated as a midboss enemy). The final boss of 1 is in the game as a full fledged boss you fight a couple of times now called Soverign Bulblax.

I would say, just in my personal experience, there are more powerful tools at your disposal but also greater room for error. Once you figure things out it's very easy and there's very little chance of anything randomly going wrong compared to 3. However before you figure things out, you're much more likely to take a heavy hit. Oatchi also needs to be consistently upgraded, so if you're going for time without regard for completion then you're much more vulnerable than 3.

olimar said it so it has to be true. olimar's the Main Guy. nintendo wouldn't have him say something like that if it wasn't true. most people aren't gonna think "but what if olimar's WRONG?" they're just gonna say aw, okay, that's sweet. it was all a misunderstanding. nintendo knows this. if louie was actually a heartless jerk they would have made that clear and NOT had olimar say this. they intentionally, deliberately had olimar say that he WASN'T a heartless jerk. that's solid enough proof for me, you can't argue with olimar.

          Anonymous

none of them require you to do anything that you aren't already doing by just 100%ing every stage, it's not shit like "hunt 30 bulborbs", it's "please rescue my 3 colleagues" or "please bloom 300 flower pikmin"

          Anonymous

Yeah, there's 2 quests that repeat forever (pluck and bloom a certain number of pikmin) and you have no reason to not complete them everytime you're done. which is an annoying chore.

          Anonymous

All the side quests are just people giving you rewards for shit you're going to be doing anyways, so it's not like you have to go out of your way.

          Anonymous

You can think of Pikmin 4's "side quests" as cash rewards for natural progression. There's a "side quest" for expanding the onion, which you would have done anyways. There's a side quest for collecting all musical themed instruments, which you would have done anyways. Most side quests ask you to rescue certain castaways, but since there's no way of actually seeking out specific castaways you just gradually complete them as you go.

The side quest system is just there to trick casuals into experiencing 100% of the game. That's also why the multiplayer battle mode and side missions are inserted into the main story under the Dandori name. Miyamoto got sick of people skipping content then complaining about the game being short

Amass pikmin immediately, once you have a sizable squad focus on getting treasure and ignore any enemy that isn’t marked as a bonus or explicitly in the way

Other than that just occasionally check in on the AI and steal whatever they’re trying to get and use items whenever possible

      Anonymous

Sprout Pikmin right away until you have 25 or so then chase Olimar/Louie around and steal their stuff, they never bother to guard their treasure once they get the Pikmin on it. Hog bonus items the instant they show up, the AI pretty rarely goes for them so if you get them and just use them immediately there's a pretty strong chance another one will spawn quickly, the ultra spicy sprays and extra pikmin items are the best ones.

The mode is completely ruined the moment you realize that the glow pikmin can instantly warp to the captain you're controlling, meaning that you can get a high number of pikmin extremely fast and always overpower any enemy that appears. How many Pikmin did you guys lose in the Ancient Sirehound fight? Motherfricker rolled me into thinking the final phase was poison/White Pikmin, so I tossed a couple into the insta-death pools thinking they were poison traps just like the electric phase. Bear with me here, the game conditioned me into thinking poison-related traps had changed color since Pikmin 2 from purple to green so when the dog turned green I thought it was fair to switch to whites. Then he started roaring. I'd say it was a good final boss overall.

I forgot Glow Pikmin had universal resistance and didn't bring yellows so first time around I got pulverized during his electric phase. Also lost a bunch in his final phase to the roar/floor traps combo. Very cool fight, reminiscent to Titan Dweevil but with a much cooler moveset.

    >morons unironically seething that a kid's game is too easy.

Why are people like this? It's like complaining that Mario is too easy. This is a kid's game that can be fun for adults. All games like this are intended to be easy, if you want a challenge you need to make it yourself.

    For example :
    1. No death's (not even in the dandori missions or glow fights).
    2. Self-imposed deadline (beat the game in X days).
    3. Limited Pikmin usage (can only use at most 50% of your Pikmin).
    4. Otachi can't be upgraded.
    5. Can't use swarm or Otachi charge.
    6. No rewind use.

If you aren't willing to make it challenging yourself, than you don't really want a challenge. It's not like Pikmin 1-3 were ever difficult.

1 is a pretty difficult game for beginners to the series I think, but at the same time the late dandori challenges in 4 are actually pretty dang challenging.

      >Why are people like this?
Because I'm sick and tired of having to tie my fricking arms behind my back every time I want to experience any form of difficulty from the games I like, and I'm really sick and tired of morons like yourself justifying the game designer's lack of consideration for veteran players by acting as though we're the problem

Saying it's a kids game is not a valid excuse when later levels of these "kids games" are designed to be tough. Mario games often get pretty difficult towards the end, especially with the extra levels like Champion's Road. Olimar's Shipwreck Tale and the Sage Leaf Trials in Pikmin 4 aren't designed for newcomers, they're designed for people who want a challenge. Unsurprisingly, they're the best parts of the game because they force you to make the most of every skill the game offers you, especially if you want to get all the Platinum ranks

It's clear that the devs know that some people want difficulty in their games and are willing to offer these challenges, but instead of making this difficulty a core part of the main campaign (which is ~90% of the game's content, by the way), or offering more experienced players a hard mode, they sequester difficulty to side modes and extras so as to not alienate new players, even though they can just choose the easier difficulty and still get their chill experience

Don't get me wrong, self-imposed challenges can be tons of fun, but the fact that I can do them doesn't mean the game designers don't have to try and offer me a greater challenge

Just classic gatekeeping where only braindead childs are allowed to have fun
Just wait for mods or something, that's one thing that casualgays never get to enjoy since nearly all mods out there only make the game harder

          Anonymous

Difficulty mods are a mixed bag. Some of them can be well balanced and provide a fair challenge, whereas others are more about cranking the difficulty up to such unfair levels that it becomes unbearable. As cool as the are, they still count as us having to tie our arms behind our backs to have a more difficult experience

        Anonymous

The problem is that you can't tailor a game towards casuals and hardcore players at the game time. The design space doesn't allow for it most of the time. Which is why most of the time "hard mode" is often just the game pumping enemy stats higher and maybe throwing an additional enemy or two into the mix.

Pikmin has always been a casual game. It's not supposed to be very hard and none of the games in the franchise have been hard. If the game was designed to be difficult, not only would new players be turned off, but a lot of casual old fans would be too. Veteran players still get the same old Pikmin they liked with new enemies and mechanics.

I prefer hard games, but complaining about a longish running franchise not becoming super difficult is silly. Just look at Crash 4 as an example of releasing a hard version for veterans results in. People seethed endlessly about how they couldn't 100% it because it was to hard, the levels too long, the boxes too hidden, the time trials to tight.

Hard games do not sell and people just scream and cry and shit themselves when it filters them. The only exception to this is dark souls, but that only happened because it was memed as "The hardest game ever" so normie's were alright with it.

          Anonymous

Dark Souls being popular is just a lot of cheating normies. You just grind or summon if it's too hard. I saw people talking about how Elden Ring was "the hardest one yet" while they couldn't beat post-nerf General Radahn until they were level 150 and they were abusing the arena summons. I thought he was pretty tough when I fought him pre-nerf at level 59.
For all the shit Ganker rightfully gets, a lot of people here are genuinely really good at video games. Watch a normalgay play a game and it's infuriating how bad most of the populace is at single player games.

          >The problem is that you can't tailor a game towards casuals and hardcore players at the game time. The design space doesn't allow for it most of the time.
Of course you can. That's what multiple difficulty modes are for, it allows them to cater their games towards both newcomers and experienced players
          >Which is why most of the time "hard mode" is often just the game pumping enemy stats higher and maybe throwing an additional enemy or two into the mix.
And that's a bad thing... how? for a game like Pikmin 4, small changes are all that's needed to fix the difficulty, such as reducing/removing Ultra Spicy Spray drops from shattered enemies, reducing ice meter buildup for Ice Pikmin, rebalancing the amount of Pup Power needed for certain skills, increasing the amount of materials needed for certain items. Small changes like this would make the game much less unrelentingly easy
          >Pikmin has always been a casual game.
The main reason Pikmin 2 dropped the day meter is because people found it too unforgiving, even though it isn't. These games used to be more difficult
          >If the game was designed to be difficult, not only would new players be turned off, but a lot of casual old fans would be too.
So we just can't have a harder difficulty option at all because there are people who suck shit? Yeah, frick that
          >I prefer hard games, but complaining about a longish running franchise not becoming super difficult is silly.
I'm not asking for the game to be made kaizo difficult or anything, all I'm asking is that the game offers a more difficult mode so I don't have to just not engage with half of the game's mechanics in order to have fun
          >Hard games do not sell

            >Less spicy spray
Just don't use it. The game doesn't ever force you to use spicy spray.
            >Slower ice buildup
Limit yourself to 5 ice pikmin for fights.
            >Rebalance Pup powers
Rebalance it yourself. Just make everything cost twice as much.
            >Increase material cost
Again, just run the numbers in your head and limit how much you can buy.

All of these things can be self-imposed. None of these things require a new difficulty or change (outside potentially the ice pikmin).

Okay, let me explain this in a way that even a moron like you can understand: If a game offers me items or abilities, it expects me to use them. I shouldn't have to simply not engage with over half of a game's mechanics just so I can get any form of challenge from it, that's fricking bullshit and you know it. Hell, the game itself knows it because the Sage Leaf says exactly that during the trials. If those items or abilities end up making the game too easy, then that's the fault of the game designers, not me

While I could limit myself in what I use, it won't inherently make the game more fun for me. I like to take on challenges whilst using everything at my disposal. If I force myself to not utilize what I have, then I don't feel l'm really struggling, and thus my enjoyment is hampered. Again, this is why Olimar's Shipwreck Tale and the Sage Leaf Trials are the best parts of the game, because they offer you a challenge and expect you to use everything they give you to overcome it. They're also much more balanced than the main game, with most of the easy mode abilities being made unavailable to you.
              Olimar's Shipwreck Tale for example:
              >You can't cheese combat with Ice Pikmin because they're not available
              >You can't use sprays all the time because the game severely limits how many you can get
              >You can't use items on every encounter because the game limits how many items there are
              >You can't waste time grinding for Pikmin and Ultra Spicy Sprays because you have a strict day limit
              >Moss is still powerful, but you have to unlock each ability by collecting ship parts, and each ship part provide a different bonus

People seethed endlessly about how they couldn't 100% it because it was to hard, the levels too long, the boxes too hidden, the time trials to tight.
Whole post is absolutely correct. I did 100% Crash 4 and I had a good time doing it and it is, without question, worse than 1-3. I have no desire to ever replay it. Ironically, an easy game is far more enjoyable to play at a high skill level because the same leeway that makes it easy for beginners gives advanced players freedom to push the game's limits and experiment.

Easy Pikmin is great because you're given a wide open sandbox and plenty of time and can get a lot of entertainment out of finding better ways to approach the same simple puzzles. Hard pikmin is the Sage Trials. "Okay, well, this is tricky - wait, nevermind. It had one developer-intended solution and I found it and there's not really room to iterate on it."

      >THE MANDATORY LOCK AND TYPE CAPS MAKE IT TOO HARD
Lock on just makes it too annoying to play the game. It's the equivalent of making the game run at 5 FPS on purpose just because
Type caps straight up ruins the game because the game is built around using the 3 types of pikmin recommended every single time. Like, if the game forced you to use only 1 single type of pikmin, I guarantee you that they would make the game built around using that single pikmin type. I can only remember 2 single exceptions in the entire game, there was one area where I actually had to use water pikmin despite them not being recommended before and the obligatory 100 purple treasure.
Hell, yellow pikmins aren't even used in the last level and they're one of the original trio.

It sucks but I understand why. Winged Pikmin by their inherint concept are OP as frick and since 4 has a greater foucs on "Dandori" and efficiency on resource collection there isn't really that many potential ways of adding them in without breaking the game balance.

The only real way of solving this and the core issue with 4 is the fact you can 100% each area as they are introduced. Despite the more open nature makes it overall better than 3, the one thing it should have actually borrowed from that game was early areas and unlockables being impossible to gather until getting later area Pikmin. Basically, add a Metroidvania element to the game.

They're all good for different reasons.
1 is the shortest and most tightly designed of all of them but also has really bad Pikmin AI
2 is longer and has in my opinion the best Pikmin AI of the series. But it's not a straight upgrade because you're either going to love or hate the caves, which are a huge emphasis of 2.
3 still has good gameplay but I like it the least. The pacing is all over the place and the level design is terrible, it's just a bunch of side diversions everywhere and very little "main path". You're going to be looking at the map a LOT in 3.

4 is like a "Best of" collection of all the other games. Before each one had their own unique thing which made debates on which was "the best" highly varied and while I'm sure that's still going to be the case going back will inevitably lead to some comparison to 4.

I'd argue 2 will be the hardest to go back to. 1 still has a unique Robinson esc. atmosphere and 3 has the multiple captains that allow for some extreme multitasking once you get a good handle on them. 4 borrows from all games but it's most directly similiar to 2 and it's hard to say what 2 does better.

Some avid 2 fans will say "Oh, it has difficulty" but it's more accurate to say "It has RNG that will inevitablty frick you over and force you to restart with better RNG".

More people are buying games now, and more people hear only about specific games that get pushed heavily now. Most of these people haven't played the previous games or many games at all so they don't know what is being lost, and are being groomed to consider more simplistic games and what that entails as a positive and dying once or needing to practice or experiment a negative, regardless of genre or challenge. In fact most casuals on this site and journos will actively target, deride and beat down any game that makes some of these concessions yet still retains depth for the player to explore, because they will refuse to do so and blame the game for it.

This will only keep getting worse.

My only issue with Pikmin 4 is that the three types limit made half of the Pikmin types barely used.
Up until the house area, I only needed Ice, Blue and Yellow Pikmin, Rock, Purple, Winged and White were barely used.
Then the fifth area allowed Winged to have finally ONE use. And then not needed anymore.
If I was too allowed to have more than three types I would probably have used Purple, Winged and White more simply for their carrying specialties, but with only three types allowed I couldn't afford to spare a spot in my team.

        Anonymous

It would have allowed for more customization, yes.

My problem was that you get Rock and Winged onions so late that you'll barely use them, and you only get 20 or 30 Rock Pikmin if you visit each cave once, and only 10 Winged Pikmin in one cave in the Shore area. I am not certian you actually find them in the house's caves. There's utility but I also wanted a squad with all colors to be honest.

Sorta. The three type limit as well as the new onion system caused a lot of problems.
Purples are meant to be rare because they are by and far the best pikmin type in this game, a fair way to balance them. You don't want to use them early because they are valuable.

Rocks I think most people just slept on. There are SO many stomping and stabbing enemies in this game that you could take them in most caves to trivialize so many fights. Yet not a lot of people used them, why?
The same reason purples are balanced.
        Not wanting to waste resources.

Why would I risk losing my white pikmin if I only have 10 for 3/4s of the game when they aren't even necessary? Why would I experiment or play around with rocks when I only have 20 and I may need them later? Why the frick would I EVER waste my flying pikmin if they are so fricking useless?

That being said I think whites WERE used well in this game. They went in hard on the fact that white pikmin do the least damage so they were able to use poison enemies as "hard" versions of enemies. A poison enemy will always be more tough than a fire or electric equivalent because you are doing less damage to it with white pikmin. Using them as end game pikmin by forcing you to use shittier pikmin as a gimmick is a good idea.

The last area is probably the most interesting simply because it introduces "mud" and poison traps that forces you to use less convenient Pikmin, however my initial run I didn't give Oatchi any armor besides fire, so I couldn't clear the area with him.
In my second run, by giving Oatchi immunity to poison and more charge power, the last area that would push you to use White Pikmin is no longer mandatory as you can basically bypass them totally by using Oatchi.

IMO the three type limit didn't help the case of the game at all because it basically forced you to prioritize types that had onions or large numbers early on. I think you get 50 Ice Pikmin from caves alone in the first area, and you can find all main three colors onions in the first area too.

Purple and Rock deal more damage and would probably make some fights even easier, but you would gain, what? A few seconds? Reds already make fight trivial in most cases.

Purple might be OP but even without them you can cheese most fights and carry most treasure easily anyway. I only needed them for the gold bar and the Water wraith. After that, they are too slow when carrying stuff, I'd rather use five Pikmin to carry a treasure than one Purple that would cost me a type that would be more useful -keep in mind, my objective is to clear an area faster, which cannot be done with purple in 95% of cases-.

        >Moss is still powerful, but you have to unlock each ability by collecting ship parts, and each ship part provide a different bonus

is correct for Olimar's tale as being the most "balanced" stuff in the game because all three types have their fair use.

Using them as end game pikmin by forcing you to use shittier pikmin as a gimmick is a good idea.

also I think this would be alleviated if the rock and flying onions were given earlier.
Beating all of the dandori challenges in the first four areas should you give the winged onion, and beating the four dandori battles up to that point gives you a rock onion.

Personally I used Whites a lot in the final two areas since they are a good mix of Yellow and Winged Pikmin cause of their speed.
It helps I did a bit of the Sage Trials and got their onion before starting though. I get hiding away the Purple Onion but doing the same for the Whites was a bit much.

Frick you, this game is great. Pikmin 3 was the game that really fricked everything up by removing the squad control, only having a dogshit dodge roll to keep your pikmin safe. Oatchi fixed this glaring problem. I do think the enemies are too weak though, but still, this is one of the most soulful nintendo games in years.

Shitty randgen caves, broken difficulty, awful music, awful level design, no time management due to caves, and so on all combine to make 2 the objective worst. All it has over any other game is amount of content, and I'm pretty sure 4 has far surpassed 2 in that regard.

Nintendo is the only major company not dumbing down their games. BotW/TotK added way more features than were in Skyward Sword or A Link Between Worlds. Odyssey had way more features than SM3DW.

I don't understand why the game doesn't let you rewind back to before entering a cave. You are basically fricked if you want to restart the day.

      Anonymous

It doesn't really make sense to save that state of the game. If you leave mid-dungeon you can immediately jump back in and resume from where you left off, while also being given the choice to completely change up your pikmin.
Some time technically does pass, but resetting all the progress over an entire dungeon probably didn't make sense.

No, the rewind only goes back as far as leaving the last cave.

Rewind is the one mechanic that should never have been introduced. It really devalues the life of Pikmin if you can just reset to just before you wasted their lives. If you frick up and lose all of your Pikmin's lives, you should have to live with that shame.

        Anonymous

Yeah because it's not like people would reset their gamecube if they lost too many pikmin on a cave floor in 2.

          Anonymous

Yeah, 1 did frick up by not auto-saving when a Pikmin died, and now we're stuck with that forever.

I know people would just reset the gamecube, but there is a difference between people exploiting the save system and a fully implemented and supported rewind function.

Yeah, way easier than 4, where the reset teleports all of your pikmin away from their tasks and you now have to re-assign them with an additional travel time.
