I'm pretty iffy on grid based movement
which is weird cause I love tank controls

Dungeon crawling without grid movement seems weird imo. If you don't mind Japanese games, maybe some of the Shin Megami Tensei games might be up your ally, or Etrian Oddysey, or Lightning Warrior Raidy.

the grid based movement does kinda break the combat
but they are still fun to explore, and building your characters is fun too even though the game's a little ez

different anon here, and while I understand where you're coming from, I also recommend grimrock. It got me to try out a bunch of other grid-based dungeon crawlers and I hated most of them, but both grimrock 1 and 2 are excellent and stand apart imo

        >I'm pretty iffy on grid based movement
Then you’re pretty iffy on dungeon crawlers because that’s literally what the genre is

You search up dungeon crawlers and half of them are procedurally generated slop. That can be fun for a little while but I vastly prefer a well crafted dungeon crawling experience with enemies, items, traps, secrets, etc. purposefully placed. It makes it feel more alive like you're exploring a real place.

I find it interesting that there's an understated but huge bout of contention over the use of the term Dungeon Crawler; between the people who apply it to any game focused on crawling through a dungeon and those who want to reserve it exclusively to grid-and-turn-based games. It's even more incensed than the people who argue about the use of "roguelike vs rogue-like," although I guess it isn't surprising when Rogue was also a dungeon crawler.

But as for games, I prefer Barony. Dungeons should always be tackled in a party and it's one of the few that actually lets you do so.

It’s important to have agreed upon definitions for these kinds of things. If you’re looking for games similar to rogue, your search results get completely fricked by people calling all of these games that are nothing like rogue “roguelikes.” It’s not about being snobby or whatever, it’s so things can be effectively catalogued. If I’m looking for games like grimrock and I search for “dungeon crawler” and my search engine recommends tes4: oblivion, that’s not helpful at all. Its fricking annoying. People need to get this shit right. Its well understood that dungeon crawlers are grid-based and turn-based and it has been understood for a very long time. I can understand people mistakenly thinking it means any game where you explore dungeons, but they shouldn’t take it personally if someone wants to correct them. It’s human nature to get pissy though when someone messes with your preconceived notions about the world, so hey, what can you do?

Any game with a focus on dungeon crawls is a dungeon crawler. You should look for blobbers if you want something like Grimrock specifically

No, but its a simple enough game you can just kind of figure it out without being able to read anything.
In fact it really felt like being 13 again and experiencing something entirely new just because without being able to read anything, I'd try to do something and be utterly surprised.

It was okay. The main issue is that the speed stat is broken and once its high enough you can just strafe and speedblits everything and it becomes piss easy, the difficulty slider does nothing but make enemies hit harder
theres a 'legacy mode' in the options you can enable that halves the speed and turns on tank controls, which makes it way better imo

other than that it's alright, but it has 4 possible endings and they all suck.

It isn't bad but it was definitely a smaller project and it doesn't do anything special. By the end you'll probably leave feeling neutral about it.

Shiren 5 (the tower of fortune and the dice of fate) is easily the best in the genre, but because it’s top-down, it would probably be considered more of a true roguelike than a dungeon crawler. Dungeon crawlers are just first person roguelikes though, so yeah… Btw, when I say “roguelike,” I don’t mean like Isaac or whatever, I mean like rogue or nethack. Anyways, check it out, it’s pure fricking kino and it’s a shame that basically no one has even heard of the series.

I was curious on if I should play the newly translated PSP game or jump straight into the Vita sequel.

I would personally just jump straight into shiren 5 (it’s also on switch btw). It has the most depth out of all of the games, which also means it might be a bit daunting, but IMO the whole purpose of these games is to scratch that particular itch of “holy frick, there’s mechanics inside of the mechanics!”

"Mystery Dungeon" has veered off into its own well celebrated category/genre from roguelikes long ago.
