When I buy a French or German comic or watch an Italian or Russian movie, or even when I read a book translated from Latin or old Greek, thinking about whether the translators purposefully mistranslated the source material to replace it with their headcanon is usually the last thing on my mind. Even Japanese movies from Kurosawa to Godzilla or series like the late Shogun seem relatively safe.

I'm only up to the mines, but my main complaints thus far are that traveling on the overworld is extremely boring, and the NPC dialogue in towns is bland.

It feels more like a proof of concept than full fledged suikoden successor. They needed a bit more time to work on the plot and tweak the battle system. As it is, it feels like a downgrade to the originals. If you're looking for a modern JRPG to pass the time, then consider playing Octopath Traveler 2 if you haven't already, it's super solid.

This negative review is entirely off of the back of the localization. After reading a bunch of other negatives, people might get the wrong idea so it's important for me to emphasize. The quality of this games translation is bad. Embarrassingly bad. Your college professor would flunk the game outright.
To get more into detail, there are consistency issues with formatting, grammar, and characters. It starts pretty simple and balloons outwards. The least offensive is menu information.
We get into more moderate things now. A tutorial states "you can plan new facilities for headquarters, raise headquarters funds, and harvest resources.
That last part is noteworthy as it's meant to say "increase harvestable resources". A passive function that happens through upgrading, and not a direct action you do.
There's also more than a few grammatical, typing, and punctuation issues but those are minor. The more important annoyance is the actually quality of the translation.
A certain amount of "creativity" is to be expected from a localization to have it flow well. The people localizing this game went above and beyond in an extremely poor fashion
The phrase "i'm here for it" is stated like 6 times by 8 different characters and whoever pucnhed up the script either didn't care or realize and even if they realize their limited pool of phrases show their limited expertise with language in general. Half the cast toss in southern/country nomenclature including when it's out of character for what they were changed to be. A prim officer of the empire has a line where she off handle brings steortypical southern dialect including a few 'darlings'.
Entire personalities are either exaggerated or changed to the extent that they're completely unrecognizable to the characters they're even meant to be. This goes well beyond the scope of just taking liberties and encroaches into fan fiction.
In most lines of dialgoue both the intent AND conversation flow is completely different which re-contextualizes the characters motivations. A character who in the original script abhors war is now eager to participate in fights, for example. A stoic somewhat shady character is now turned into a hyperactive genki girl which is especially jarring when a conversation that includes her later on refers back to the stoic nature she no longer has. This is awful.
It's distressingly bad. I'm not a language nitpicker when it comes to localization. If the same intent of lines, events, and characters was even loosely accurate to the original authors work we wouldn't be here. There are movie and pop culture sayings, references, and idioms inter-spaced all over the script. Characters who play a scene straight in a serious manner are now making language based puns and cackling in English.
I have quite literally never recommended against a game for it's localization before this point. This is the first game I've ever done this for. It's the English version of Breath of FIre II level's of incomprehensibly bad.
Even now I STILL don't want to get this game a thumbs down. Because in regards to aesthetics, feel, and some aspects of gameplay they nailed what they set out to do. But I can not in good faith blindly tell somebody to purchase this game in service of a script that is this distressingly awful.

It's the play. The game was only going to be niche outside of Japan anyway, hell, even niche in Japan, but more niche outside of it, but now it's not a niche game, it's an adversarialized one. What determines twitter's opinion on it is no longer quality or popularity, but ideological stance, it has been injected into a broader discussion in a market it would not have otherwise had any impact on, this may pay off and may not, who knows, but this is the marketing they apply these days.

I'm only up to the mines, but my main complaints thus far are that traveling on the overworld is extremely boring, and the NPC dialogue in towns is bland.

This negative review is entirely off of the back of the localization. After reading a bunch of other negatives, people might get the wrong idea so it's important for me to emphasize. The quality of this games translation is bad. Embarrassingly bad. Your college professor would flunk the game outright.
To get more into detail, there are consistency issues with formatting, grammar, and characters. It starts pretty simple and balloons outwards. The least offensive is menu information.
We get into more moderate things now. A tutorial states "you can plan new facilities for headquarters, raise headquarters funds, and harvest resources.
That last part is noteworthy as it's meant to say "increase harvestable resources". A passive function that happens through upgrading, and not a direct action you do.
There's also more than a few grammatical, typing, and punctuation issues but those are minor. The more important annoyance is the actually quality of the translation.
A certain amount of "creativity" is to be expected from a localization to have it flow well. The people localizing this game went above and beyond in an extremely poor fashion
The phrase "i'm here for it" is stated like 6 times by 8 different characters and whoever pucnhed up the script either didn't care or realize and even if they realize their limited pool of phrases show their limited expertise with language in general. Half the cast toss in southern/country nomenclature including when it's out of character for what they were changed to be. A prim officer of the empire has a line where she off handle brings steortypical southern dialect including a few 'darlings'.
Entire personalities are either exaggerated or changed to the extent that they're completely unrecognizable to the characters they're even meant to be. This goes well beyond the scope of just taking liberties and encroaches into fan fiction.
In most lines of dialgoue both the intent AND conversation flow is completely different which re-contextualizes the characters motivations. A character who in the original script abhors war is now eager to participate in fights, for example. A stoic somewhat shady character is now turned into a hyperactive genki girl which is especially jarring when a conversation that includes her later on refers back to the stoic nature she no longer has. This is awful.
It's distressingly bad. I'm not a language nitpicker when it comes to localization. If the same intent of lines, events, and characters was even loosely accurate to the original authors work we wouldn't be here. There are movie and pop culture sayings, references, and idioms inter-spaced all over the script. Characters who play a scene straight in a serious manner are now making language based puns and cackling in English.
I have quite literally never recommended against a game for it's localization before this point. This is the first game I've ever done this for. It's the English version of Breath of FIre II level's of incomprehensibly bad.
Even now I STILL don't want to get this game a thumbs down. Because in regards to aesthetics, feel, and some aspects of gameplay they nailed what they set out to do. But I can not in good faith blindly tell somebody to purchase this game in service of a script that is this distressingly awful.
