>english name is just whatever they are based on but spelled wrong
Why was this so common in gen 1?

isn't every pokemon name just whatever they're based on but spelled wrong?
No
Because it works, that’s normies eat up GenWun, and game freak shills it so much
>gen 1 pokemon
>japanese name is just an english word
>the Klink line wasn't "Geer", "Gigeer", and "Gigageer" respectively
Missed opportunity.
Gigageer is so good.
It should have been
Cogear, Gigear, Gigagear.
Their JP names are Giaru, Gigiaru, and Gigigiaru respectively, so that checks out.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Gyarados called Skulkraken there? I still think it's a way better name.
Don't forget Magnemite: its Japanese name is Coil. Magneton's is Rarecoil.
Didn't everyone shit on Flamigo when it was actually shown?
It's Skulkra. "Skulkraken" is fanfiction. That name would be too long even for the release version.
It was Skulkraken which would've fit exactly
It is that in Japanese.
Probably because it wasn't well-established what a Pokemon name should be like. There's also Gloom, Ditto, and Golem, which are just words, spelled correctly and all.
aCTUALLY, jAPS iNTERCHANGE r AND l, SO PORYGON IS ACTUALLY CORRECT AND POLYGON
OP touches young chidren
The japanese are stupid
because it's more soulful then trying to make some clunky tryhard pun like gen 5 does.
>soul = lazy
got it, thanks boomer
I always assumed that "porygon" was a really tortured play on "polygon" and "origami" because it looks like an origami bird
>Not named Porygami
It took me 20 years to realise porygon was polygon said with a Japanese accent
Given the low budget and dysfunction of gen 1's development I'm willing to bet a Japanese dev or someone from Nintendo was trying to tell one of the translators the English translation of porygon's name and they found how he said "polygon" funny enough they used that as the name
This isn't true. All the Pokémon names in Japanese have an romaji (Latin script) trademark name counterpart and for Porygon, it's Porygon in Japan too before Red and Blue were localized.
You can see this spelling in the first Japanese Opening which came out in 1997, while Red & Blue came to the US in 1998.
There was no formula for naming mons during Generation I's development. Many generations passed with them still not knowing how exactly mons should be named and subsequently churning out rather low quality "good enough"'s.
It took till Generation IX to get something as simple and elegant as 'Lokix', and even still they're using something as bad as 'Kingambit'.
>No tricks, no gimmicks to the naming as it's just simple naming convention anyone playing could come up with if they saw it
Maybe genwunners actually are onto something saying that gen is the best
There was a poster of the original English names before release and there were far more that were just English words. Arcanine was Blaze, Parasect was Parasyt.
Machoke was kungfoo
The original names got incredibly simplistic at times, too.
Haunter is "Ghost". Gastly is simply "Ghos".
Moltres is Fire, Zapdos is Thunder, and Articuno is Freezer.
Vaporeon is Showers, Flareon is Booster, and Jolteon just pluralizes Zapdos's name as Thunders.
Then you got stuff like Dratini, whose original name is Miniryu, which is basically just "mini dragon".
Honestly, the localization having simplistic names for gen 1 Pokémon is pretty faithful to the original names.
I prefer the simpler names, much easier to remember. Do you know this frickers name? I certainly don't.
Probably just because it's a newer Pokemon. I remember Hakamo-o and its line's names because of the hyphen
Boomer Kuwanger i think
Localizers were lazy back then.
Because burgers a dumb.
Mankey is Monkey+Cranky, moron
Isn't porygon's jp name the exact same as burger land?
YEAH BUT WHEN THEY DO IT FOR FLAMIGO EVERBODY b***hES AND CRIES
Hacking, stomping, spitting on Arbok's hideous body
Keeping "porygon" is kinda racist
.
It is literally the same practice in Japanese
