Funny I think the opposte. Yeah the camera angle sucks but I really didn't like the 2023 ESA. Had weird GDQish vibes to them, like they were going corporate and selling out. This seems to be feel more traditional.

I think a lot of the decisions made this year was them trying to resist the direction ESA was going in in 2023, and trying not to sell out, and the general feeling ESA was going the sell out route with stuff like Celina, all the gimmicks at ESA 2023. This is like their "moment of resistance" by doing back to hosts between runs, a very amateurish style, pure run heavy. However it caused a lot of dropped sponsors. I think thats mostly to do with with no 24 hours which means no American attention and speedrunning not being hot anymore. In fact gaming events on Twitch in general is dying, in fact Twitch itself is slowly dying.

No, BigJon was at ESA summer not winter. I initially thought it was Celina, however checking other stat trackers (here's one with pre 2020 stuff) that had not in depth detail, the peak viewers was Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which if I remember was the one where Chugaconroy guest couched, which explains the boost.

Yeah actual names will attract more people. I think speedrun events are behind the times. The charity/donation aspect is played out, speedrunning itself isn't dead but events like this are, they're ten years behind. They need to focus more on bringing the big speedrun names in as its all about personality, sprinkled in between rather unknown runners to help promote them.
The thing is all the mid sized and major runners aren't submitting to these events anymore, they don't need them, they're bigger than them.

What went wrong with ESA this time, it feels like they have done everything wrong they could have. Someone said this all stemmed from the RPG legends event, anyone know what exactly changed?

ESA is the anti-GDQ and we're only now seeing that it's a double edged sword.
As GDQ gets progressively more shit, ESA gets progressively better. GDQ starts to climb back up the shaft they dug themselves into, ESA grabs a shovel.

Unironically is objectively bad, the runner cam is bigger than the game, the cam itself looks like its just been slapped on an overlay on OBS. What it reminds me of is when in an event the cam dies so they use a "backup cam" something they just hastily slap onto the screen. Feels like they finished the overlay a mere 5 mins before the event starts, and I wouldn't be surprised as they're STILL tweaking it.
It feels both stagnant and trying too hard to change because a lot of the changes are reversions. Hence why some people say it feels amateurish, because it goes back to their amateurish days. This is good for nostalgiagays but bad because it feels like a step back not forwards.
Part of me wonders (actually suspects) that a lot of the changes have to do with the fact the 2023 ESA's (and partially 2022 at some points) felt a lot more corporate and a lot like GDQ. It was essentially losing what made ESA unique. There were a lot of complaints about that in this thread during prior events in 2023 and we know ESA lurk these threads, and also it was just a general feeling outside of Ganker that it was getting more GDQish. I think this is their way of resisting that.
I also believe Metako taking more charge is no coincidence that all these changes happened at the same time, and most of the changes were from ideas he had from his spin off event. I think a lot of people leaving the same time Metako shot up higher in the ranks is no coincidence either. They probably disagreed with the changes, as well as disagreed with the direction the event was going in, which was a more traditional "back to basics" style.

You can feel the dissent in the atmosphere. Especially early day one. Everything seemed rushed and last minute and like nobody gave a frick and was just going through the motions. The atmosphere was just drab. Day 2 was a slight improvement especially in Stream 2 they seemed to be having more fun there. Especially because they had the freedom to shit all over the new sound effects.

Yeah thats the thing too, this could have been a great ESA. Its not full of meme shit like last year was, its full of pretty good, high ranked, pure runs, a lot of comfy runs, a lot of skilled runs, but then its ruined by all these weird changes that make the event feel weird. Stream 2 still being the same but being really good due to high quality runs show how much the changes are ruining ESA this year. It had so much potential scheduling wise.
If the majority doesn't like it, it will be gone. And from the messages I've seen the week before ESA, I bet yah it will be back to old style at Summer unless they ignore the comments.

The layout is completely contradictory: the bigger webcam feels like it's supposed to make the event feel more personal, but the angle of the camera emphasizes the separation of the runners and audience, having the opposite effect. Day 2 has had stronger viewership than day 1, that usually happens people tend to forget speedrun marathons are on it seems. However yeah the viewership gigaplummets for reruns, they're not retaining the American Audience like they thought they would with the reruns, this is shown in the threads too where the previous thread died. They don't wanna watch reruns. They then have to spend the entire morning recovering viewership, that might be hard during wagie workday.

It doesn't make you feel part of the event, it makes me feel like pic related. Like I'm standing in the corner just checking out this event that happens to be in the hotel I'm staying at. Like I was walking through the corridors and just peaked in the room and I'm standing in the door, watching everyone else having fun. It also makes the crowd look much smaller as there's less chairs visible, so if those chairs don't have people on it, it looks super empty.

GDQ did the same shit with the stage, it's awful. You want to feel the atmosphere of the room, all those people being there together. It just feels weird with the current angle.
I kinda get what they were going from and I like that you can see more of the audience, but it's not working for me. Turning the table to be 45 degrees from the camera would be better. You still get that the runners are facing the game, and have a more natural view of their face. The eyes are an important part of a face, so when you can't see them it looks like you're being ignored
It just all feels off. When stream 2 came up yesterday I felt like "Ahhh there's ESA" that felt like ESA to me, stream 1 doesn't. It feels like some random person's first attempt at a speedrun event it just all feels not quite right and awkward.

I think people would react more negatively to Stream 2 being killed than to no 24 hours. If given the choice I think most ESAers both in person and viewership wise would prefer two streams not 24 hours over one 24 hour stream. Stream 2 is too engrained in the culture now.
The issue isnt the lack of runs or submissions, the issue is wanting to sleep, so having it be 24 hours would remove the whole reason for it not being 24 hours.

Weird. They made lots of changes and not all of them good, its taking a lot of getting used to. Just everything feels off, like we're watching a discount ESA or something. Wish.com ESA.
Actually good runs. Just pure, solid speedruns none of the silly gimmick shit like last event, but some very wonky and off putting production decisions and production value.
Day 1 was weird because there was this odd atmosphere, apparently some drama went down and most of the staff bailed, and there's a lot of unpopular changes. Day 2 was better once Stream 2 which they haven't changed arrived, Day 3 has also been better, so its improving day by day, but wow did ESA start with a whimper not a bang. Everyone seemed rushed off their feet and everything seemed rushed and last minute and everything was different and looked unfinished, they've literally been altering the layout day by day as the feedback comes in.
Daspharoh confirmed that someone at ESA pushed Prize mommy out because of her rising popularity which by extension means you lose Nashlax who I think made some of those videos you'd they play during setup time. I wonder how many other people was pushed out too.
