lovely idea in principle. in practice however it doesn't quite pan out as you idealise it. in this context your competition results in products being gated behind sometimes costly proprietary hardware for nobody's benefit but the companies making their little exclusivity deals. not very consumer-friendly as I see it

NTA but you're forgetting how competition used to work, games and platforms were often released at reasonable prices and steadily declined in price in response to competitors.
That's how it used to work until about gen 7,the same gen third party developers had to be paid to make games exclusively.

Not sure I agree. Exclusivity is the reason a lot of games are even able to exist nowadays due to funding/deals. Golf Story on Switch for example is exclusive because Nintendo was willing to fund the studio. Same story with Bayonetta 2 and 3. Either those games would never exist, or they would be Nintendo exclusive. Either way non-Nintendo players wouldn't be able to play the games, so exclusivity doesn't matter. In a lot of cases exclusives are also tied to unique features of the hardware as well.

Not liking exclusives is how you can spot a zoomer from a mile away.
