Anon isn't wrong. The game's atmosphere, themes and setting are great and the gameplay is fun once or twice but its story and writing are meh. It presents a couple of interesting concepts/dilemmas without even really touching on them, and the conspiracy stuff is pretty basic as other anons have said. It 'explores' nothing. It's well-made but just not very deep.
The ambience is top-notch though, if you're into that.

      >explores transhumanism in the shallowest way possible

this. The game wasn't BAD (in my opinion), and it did explore some themes which is more than 90% of the market but it's the most basic b***h daddies first transhumanism/conspiracy theories but with racism allegories. See:

      >the implications are they're gonna make the super human half-robots ride le back of the bus like rosie parks!!!
      >and that a software update will make them into a bad left 4 dead clone

      Meanwhile in the first game:
directly namedrops the rothschilds and rockefellers, declaring them the ones responsible
plainly outlines that governments use false flags and kill their own to enact policy
declares government undermines the middle class to the point it disappears with taxes while drawing lines connecting media, corporations and government
points out government uses terrorism to control their population

Deus Ex talks about the fricking tri-lateral commission, classical and enlightenment philosophers, it invokes every conspiracy theory and fringe believe under the sun because that was the point of the game the central thesis: "what if every conspiracy theory was true?". It did wild shit like have the terrorist mcbaddies turn out to be nuanced and right on some points, it asked you whether it was better for the good people to leave a bad organization out of protest or to stand their ground. You get in a fricking debate with a random Austrailian-Chinese bartender about rhetoric and propoganda. Every npc is a dispenser of some kind of fricking nonsense and talks at you like a philosophy major but that's a FEATURE, not a bug. The whole point is to give you something to CHEW on, to make you question what is right and wrong and why it is.

Meanwhile the deepest thing to come out of HR was ADDAAAAAAAAAM
      THE FRUIT FLIES ADAM

Almost impossible for a prequel, and I've never seen it with a videogame.
In fact in all of history I've only ever seen two prequels that didn't retcons elements of the original and felt very thematically and tonally consistent
HR isn't really a bad case though, if you read the DX bible some things (like an aug apartheid) fit pretty well

To be fair, if I could replace one of my arms with a nearly identical robotic arm that was just as if not more capable than my flesh one, i'd do so simply for the convenience of being able to take it off and sleep on my side at night without the awkward arm positioning/arm going dead part.

If you were standing right behind her, your arm would be stretched out front over her shoulder. So like that but laying on the bed and you move the pillow to make it fit.

A 30 second conversation between NSF troops on Liberty Island is a deeper exploration of transhumanism than all of HR and MD.
The Jensen games barely ever go into the implications of augs like 'Hey my employer kinda fricking owns me now cause he pays for my expensive anti-rejection drugs' or 'I was forced to augment myself to stay competitive in my field'. These things are there but they are not given nearly enough attention.

You constantly deal with those things, especially in side missions.

      >You meet escorts being forced to augment by the pimp in China

      >A gang in china whose job is to kidnap augmented people and steal their parts
      >The first terrorist group you meet is about getting rid of augs because of exploitation
      >Main anti-aug activists tell you about how they lost their loved ones be ause of them

Even excluding the documents, the game talks a lot about this.

I hated interacting with the characters. Your character can't influence anything because it's a prequel. The race/immigrant analogy is insufferable and some people say it's supposed to be a narrative pushed from above, which would be cool but I saw none of that in the actual game. Some people also say that augs are a way to control people, which would also be cool, but you don't really see that explicitly outside of rumors. It also fricks up the prequel deal because very few people had augs in the original.
They should have ignored the original DX and made a fresh story with the same themes.
I liked DXIW but played it before DX and with mods to fix the worst parts.

Also you have to RP psychopathy to use guns with how often you're going against security or cops.
