Isn't Stingray basically unchanged? It just can't really cope with the newer mechanics.

        Anonymous

All of the vehicles are unchanged, but the X/GX boost mechanic and boost costs made Golden Fox a top pick because it has max recovery, while Stingray suffers from mediocre recovery and the highest boost cost of all four.

None because it is not a game, it's a market research tool. They are clearly doing this to drum up.interest for f-zero and seeing if people want this kind of gameplay.

If things go well we will probably see s new game with features from 99 like the Rival system and car customization.

only way to win on mute city without being a braindead golden fox player is to get a skyway at the end that uses the shortcut, boost panels and the turn at the end. and even then, you probably won't.

        Anonymous

Where do you go to the skyway specifically? I try to do it exactly here, it lets me get multiple boost pads usually and brings me after the final turn every time

          Anonymous

there and the turn before it are both good. if you have a high position and can maintain it on that straightaway the one you have is probably better. but if you're really far behind you'll get more distance out of using it at the turn before the straightaway

Place the arrow right at the beginning of the gravel, it will still take you all the way past the last curve before the finish line. Also, add a second arrow right at the end of the healing pad, it takes you to the beginning of the straight where the ramp is. From experience those are the best Skypath start points in Mute City.

Boosting gives everyone the same speed regardless if they're smoking

        >doesn't die on hit while smoking
        >doesn't die from the walls either
It was Fox and was already inside the healing pad, by the time it starts healing it already has enough health to survive

        >doesn't die from ramming me which should at least result in a double ko
I never saw him spinning, most likely he had it saved, meanwhile your bar was still almost depleted when he hit you and your spin didn't recharge on time

You overcommited, wasted all of your energy trying to get a kill and paid for it. It happens.

        >Boosting gives everyone the same speed regardless if they're smoking
But the speed should have gone back faster than it did here. Especially when there's already black smoke.

I don't frequent Bart's bar much due to my busy lifestyle, but he's kind of my biggest fan. The Falcon House is in quite a convenient area so if you see the Blue Falcon passing nearby, you're in luck. I remain convinced that the only reason they opted for a 99 modelled off of F-Zero is because they couldn't hit upon a way to make a functional race with Mario Kart and its famous item system. The skyway just feels very much like an MK sort of idea, rather than something you'd devise for F-Zero. Not that I'm complaining, I've been having a blast. I just don't see it as the harbinger for some kind of franchise resurgence; I reckon this only came about through sheer luck.

I finally got my first GP win as goose. 3>1>1>19>9

Tips would be to save Skyway for laps 2 and 4 (except Death Wind and Silence) Start boosting midway through laps 3 and 4 to catch up. Monitor your golden pellets and move forward/backward if you gain too many pellets at one time. You'll know what I mean when you start practicing. Also, practice silence.

Also for the love of god, please don't miss boost pads on Death Wind, you will rank out.

      >Also for the love of god, please don't miss boost pads on Death Wind, you will rank out.

      Anonymous

I don't get the pellet tip. Do you mean, if you don't have enough sparks, you should actually slow down and let people pass you so you can get more sparks?

        Anonymous

Yes. Lap 1 you're going to want to use 3 boost max to get towards the front of the pack. By the time you get to lap 2, you want to stop boosting and wait to use it during lap 3&4. Enough people are going to pass you so you'll be able to use the skyway at the end of lap 2. Usually, you want to stick to rank 15-20 during lap 3 so you're not gaining too much or too few sparks (and possibly miss out on boosting bc of early Skyway). As you get closer to using a skyway at the end of laps 3 and 4, start boosting so you can catch up with everyone else and use your skyway at the end of lap 4 to finish consistently in the top 10. The only thing stopping you from 1st is a good stingray or fox.

      >one boost per lap until the final
      >wants to stay ~20 cars back to make sure you have skyway right before the finish
      >murder death kill

        Anonymous

Goose is really dependent on getting KOs to consistently place above, like, 4th or 5th place. Play for Skyway, look for KOs on pilots or bumpers, and be smart with your boosts until lap 4.

Might give it a try just for something different. The only KOs I ever get though are by complete accident

          Anonymous

For GP purposes, grey bumpers are great fodder if you can target them. They don't fully refill your boost like a player does, but it gives you a permanent increase for the rest of the GP. A good Goose can enter death wind/silence with an absurdly long boost meter and run away with easy wins.

They're polar opposites in terms of how you play them. While Fox wants to frontrun as much as possible, Goose benefits from staying around other enemies taking advantage of its superior stability and resistance to attempt to steal KOs since it has the lowest boost cost of all vehicles, so one single kill gives it so much gas that it can boost through the entire lap, but you also have to be aware of its very low recovery, so you have to be smart with your boosting. This becomes less of a problem on harder maps where boosting is not as common.

you know, you can boost from lap 1.
              >hit the booster before the start line (absolutely necessary)
              >boost when it expires into the gravel on the right side
              >boost again because it wont last you through the gravel

                Anonymous

The problem is the funnel before you hit the lap marker. Stingray has the worst acceleration and there are no boost pads in the 40 player version of the Death Wind funnel, so they'll be at the back of the pack automatically. You can boost when you hit the starting line, but so can everybody with a sizeable lead in front of you. It's an uphill battle to even survive that map in a GP.

              Anonymous

In the original games you had to do one lap before you got boost power iirc.

How is death wind the filter? My races with falcon in GP did get me my first and only rank out there but that’s just because I missed a boost before the finish into lap 4 and had a skyway I was saving before I realized “oh wait I’m gonna rank out” and it was too late. Every other vehicle dominates it and even falcon isn’t too bad and possible to get a top 5 with. I honestly think Mute City and Big Blue are worse since your entire GP depends on that foundation.

      Goose, not even close.

Fox: super autist tryhard that memorized perfect line and perfect boosts, does not touch bumpers under any circumstance.
Stingray: sweaty SNES speedrunner that wants the highest top speed AND best cornering in the game, can still handle bumpers but doesn't want to risk certain death on a single frick up either
Goose: mild sweat, will pick the most consistent car that works in any circumstance and also excels in GPS with early bumper KOs
Falcon: either clueless or a masochist, some people pick it anyway despite it being a poor man's Fox that has the cornering of Stingray with none of the other benefits (top speed).

I don't think Nintendo are willing to put in the effort to redesign any of the X or GX machines in the original SNES style, which basically means the only candidates are the machines from the two Japan-only SNES sequels. And all four of those cars would be dreadful additions since they're basically better versions of the original four, whilst also being much uglier. Given the risk, I'd rather ask for all the courses from the other 2D games instead just to have more places to race. Throw in some OSTs and we're gold.

It has two wienerpits because the pilots - Gomar and Shioh - come from a race of aliens that are basically born as a pair and do everything together. When they get married they split off to form a new pair with their spouse, so they want to race together in F-Zero while they still can. They had to petition the F-Zero committee to allow them to race, since more than one pilot was against the rules.

Sucks that we'll likely never see them. The Safari Zone and Porygon episodes of Pokémon were dubbed too but didn't get permission to air. At least they're not completely lost like the Beyblade OST that were destroyed in a studio fire.

They sure did. I remember watching the series starting at like episode 12 or something of the sort.
The funniest part is that the GP Legend game has pretty much nothing to do with the show outside of new characters and designs. No idea what they were thinking.

The game was made while the show was in development, so the staff had no real clue as to the plot of the show and just did their own thing. I think it came out around episode three of the anime.

the screen that shows machines has room for like 20 of them on it, there's a bunch of ? placeholder spots for more machines so it's likely they are going to add more.

I’ve been through many F-Zero threads and I don’t know why but I just find this series mainly about race cars extremely funny, I don’t know what it is, the hilarious WEBMs, People making fun of each other on here or the fact that F-Zero finally fricking got something after practically 20 years of nothing AND THAT FRICKING SOMETHING IS INSANELY ADDICTING AND POPULAR, I don’t understand why people compare it to Federation Force because at its core, F-Zero 99 is still F-Zero

I feel like it's the entire series reaching its true potential. There's only so much you can do with gameplay that's just about going fast. Expanding on the combat and survival aspects would've been the next logical step if it didn't take them 20 years to think of it.

Single races are going to heavily lean in favor of the machine the track was built for. Fox wins 99 mode the most since Mute City almost always wins the vote and Fox is the best at Mute City. The game was clearly balanced around the GP format where you'll see a lot more diversity in the top runners at the end. Also it's Ganker we're talking about so of course we're gonna be shitters.

Don't be discouraged if you place badly a lot, you're up against about 100 players so it's only natural. It uses the boosting mechanics of GX rather than how the SNES game actually worked, so you should be familiar with it. Just don't overextend and you should be fine.

Bullshit. Taking the long way just means you get left in the dust and have to play catch up again. The shortcut is the only viable option. Just make sure you spin as you go through it.

          t.S5 99+ wins

I've tried that, it rarely works. Offroad sections are wide enough that most will just go right around you.

            >It's worked for me so far
It works like 50% of the time for me and that's not enough.
Besides, it's not like there's a better place to use a boost on any of the maps with boost-worthy offroad areas.

I also skip the jump. You’re faster on the ground supposedly.

            No you aren't.

              Anonymous

I use the boost to keep up in the pack precisely to ensure that strat works and also to ensure 2 skyways. That's my gameplan for Stingray Mute, and since applying it I don't think i've had a bad race with it

Jumping always accelerates you if you're not already at 478 KMH. It also replenishes your spin. There's no reason to not go on it. That being said, you have a 478 speed cap while you're in the air, so if you boost during a jump you're wasting the boost.

Apparently some people have no problems with the oval, so maybe you don't know everything? If you're hitting gravel, missing the boosters, boosting in the wrong spots, or sucking ass at avoiding other cars, then maybe you need to work on those things to get to Silence?

Sting King here. I boost through the gravel and if I miss one arrow I’m ranking out. Unless I get a KO or have a bigger tank because of one previous it’s going to take a lot of luck to do well. Skyway isn’t much help either.

                >there is nothing to learn about a fricking oval
Yes there is. Knowing the best line and when to boost on each track makes a huge difference. The timing of when you skyway is huge too, it'll last longer if you end it on a corner. Only one track is straight oval and it still has those boost panels and wind push to contend with. Spin when it's crowded around them and save your boosts for when you're in danger of ranking out of the GP.

                >there is nothing to learn about a fricking oval

Death Wind is the Knight Cup filter for a good reason, it's not just about driving on an oval, but about doing it as optimally as possible while 39 other players are trying to do the same and doing their hardest to survive in order to reach the final stage. If you know you need to hit the boost panels, save your spin attacks so you don't get bumped away; if the wind is causing you trouble, drive at an angle so you can strafe more easily and avoid the gravel; there's only one good Skypath point and it's between the finish line and the first gravel spot so use it optimally; save your boosts for the gravel patches if you're unable to dodge them and maintain your energy for the last lap as everyone will be rushing to get into the Top 20.

                Stop understimating the oval.

You're right, theres not much to learn about an oval.
What you DO need to learn is how to control your machine, when and where to boost/Skyway, and how to manage your spins. And it sounds like it's going to be a long, rough journey for you.

It's very deceptive. Actually, it's worse on the original SNES because you never got the wind lines indicating what direction you'll be pushed into and there aren't 98 other racers beating the pulp out of each other giving you a shot to catch up.

As for the '99' version, Death Wind offers two extra-long straightaways giving you the chance to use a boost should you actually miss a booster, on top of the one time you really should, which is during the start with the roughs going in an alternating pattern. Also, are you using the L and R buttons to slip and slide, because I think you can reduce how far to the side you are pushed if you slip in the opposite direction of the wind, kind of like how you can resist the magnets in Port Town.

Death Wind is also one of the most skyway friendly courses since there are no key points to activate it, meaning you can trigger the Super Boost as soon as you acquire it, giving you the ability to leapfrog back into the front of the pack.

Falcon is the most consistent machine for placing top 25 but miserable to win with. I'm doing Falcon first and getting a generic 1st place victory wasn't that big of a deal but GP feels like a complete crapshoot. Fox/Stingray completely outclass it in terms of aggressive play and once they get ahead you're not going to see them again unless they choke, but Goose also performs better in the thick of things, so it's an uphill battle any way you slice it. It's immensely frustrating because you can't afford to make a single mistake AND you have to pray your competitors DO make mistakes.

I feel the opposite. Once i'm in a groove I can get consistent Top 10 with Blue Falcon but yeah i'm probably not winning unless the Foxes left by Death Wind are all frauds, or Silence if the room is extremely incompetent since I don't actually play Silence fair, I bag that track for a skyway.

I suppose that is a real problem when dealing with a flat 20-racer cut-off point in a Stingray.

It's an unfortunate drawback to using the original SNES order of Grand Prix courses. Since there were only four racers that mattered and none of them were intentionally rough with you, it didn't play out like the filter from hell this one is. It might've benefited from a move to, say the 3rd course in the order.

NTA but maybe this will help a little. When the wind is pushing you to the left, when you exit the previous turn, stick to the right side. That way it's easier to slide into the boostpad and there's less of a chance of being pushed off

          >easier said than done
Yeah, true. I'd say this is definitely a bigger issue on lap 1, so it might be better for you to use that lap to try and collect as many orbs as possible so you can use the skyway to catch up if you miss it. Once people start using the skyway it thins the field out a little bit and you have an easier time hitting the boosts, at least until the frickery in the last lap

FALCON, SHALL I TELL YOU SOMETHING BEFORE YOU DIE
BOOST, AND HEALTH, THE TWO GREAT FORCES WHICH MAKE UP OUR UNIVERSE
THESE TWO UNIVERSAL FORCES ARE CONDENSED IN EACH OF OUR MACHINES
      DIDN'T YOU KNOW?
AT THE MOMENT WHEN THE TWO FORCES BECOME ONE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO SEIZE THAT POWER
THEN I CAN TURN THIS WHOLE GALAXY INTO A PILE OF ASHES IN AN INSTANT

Is this anyone else's favorite song in GX? I think it's because it most resembles the soundtrack in X, it's so good

    I mad.

Lucky bumper is fine as a mechanic. Regular/red bumpers are fair. Both together is utter bullshit and should not be in the game.

It was the first time I saw all three line up so you couldn't go between, man it's kind of fricked that it happened on the final Port Town chicane. Didn't get hit but it slowed me down too much.

Good skyway use hard carries. Make sure you use it in a section with triple boosts lined up up top.

Skypath on the middle point between the goal and the gravel, then just hope your opponents are hitting each other enough to let you catch them up.

I figured out how to consistently get a good if not perfect place on Death Wind I as Falcon but I'm not telling any of you because I want to keep winning.
