Seriously feels like there's been some kind of breakthough in terms of how to make racing games more fun online. Probably the best thing first of all is to have players who simply can't keep up get deranked so they can stop playing. Then the Rival system gives players something to achieve besides getting first place. The GPs are a great idea that are easily applicable to other racing games too as they provide a more serious test of skill to whittle down the competition.

Just won my first ever GP after almost choking it all away in the final stretch, and I've gotta say, as someone who's been playing these games ever since F-Zero X, I don't think anything in this series has compared to the sensation of the first time you take the gold in this gauntlet. I didn't think the franchise would ever come back to give me these types of feelings.
in the old game he sucked but they changed the boost mechanic. now it has gx style boosting where your life gauge is your boost gauge. golden fox recovers the most health from health strips therefore he also regains the most boost and can boost more often

No, it doesn't. Mapping skyway and normal boosts to the same button ensures that someone out at the front of the pack can't just use the skyway to gain even more distance. It's a really smart gameplay choice.

There's really something to be said about how chaotic it can be sometimes, the risk and reward, and the hilariously bullshit moments and best of all it's not really that different than a normal F-Zero experience

So the Blue Falcon is the worst, right? It's the only one I just can't get a win with and every time I come 10~15th I'm still number one out of 30~ Blue Falcons.
Did you make use of blast turning? Tapping the acceleration button makes handling turns much easier in the GBA games. In Climax you can also hold down when turning to drift more effectively or something. You will lose speed depending on the vehicle when doing those so be mindful of that.
If you really want to experience piloting a rock try using Black Bull in GP Legend and weep.
They can just add the BS F-Zero cars, they're mainly just clones of the original game's racers but Nintendo can just tweak their stats more to make them more unique.
for a long term I can kind of see a few possibilities
-more modes, maybe allowing for 25/50 Man Races by default since the modes exist already; Death Race would be aces for this game
-more tracks, there's hints in the files that BS track data may be there, but you've got BS, MV, GP and Climax for track potential, tons of craziness with a little bit of work
-the game seems balanced and primed around the 4 machines, but it would be nice to have like, ships from some of the other games even if they're cosmetics for the pre-existing 4
I think more interesting than the one BS track data that shares a name is the fact there's signs of completely new tracks.
The one BS track in the list just being named Forest doesn't invoke much confidence in it being the BS F-Zero 2 track since it's a fairly common name. Though since the BS F-Zero 2 tracks were never archived we'll never know, which is kinda fricked up!
The Skull and Bio Rex aren't villains. Skull just loves racing so much he came back from the dead and Bio Rex first wanted to prove his superiority, then he wanted money for food.
Many of them look like villains, but they're just goofy characters. Even the actual villains like Deathborn and Black Shadow stand around doing interviews and signing autographs while they threaten to murder everyone.

By all accounts, the engine is a 3D facsimile of all this anyway. there's technically nothing stopping them beyond Switch performance metrics from going F-Zero X style, so yeah this was probably an exec or creative decision.
I doesn't need to be full 3D, but I do wish there was some graphical enhancements like the track feeling more like its levitated high above the ground.
I feel like this game shows that if F Zero were to make a comeback with online play, it'd have to be altered to be more fun to newcomers and more accessible. There needs to be comeback mechanics like the skyway or bumper cars to make it not so demoralizing. GX is a great game but it would not make for a good online experience. 99 plays so well that even if you are losing its still fun.
This is what I keep saying. Multiplayer GX is only fun when people have similar skill levels and in a game where high skill is totally incomparable with low skill, it just doesn't work. What's even the point of playing multiplayer when players are not even able to interact with each other?
Ultimately you're racing against yourself. It's all about improving your times. Being able to go fast despite all the chaos is definitely a difficult skill but even if there's little interaction sometimes all players still are trying to go faster than they did last time.
8 already has F-Zero stuff in it. Watch, 99 & GX remaster will release and the payoff will just be Captain Falcon and a full F-Zero Cup in MK9, with a battle royale mode that has mechanics from FZ99.

There is sales / audience overlap depending on the genre or situation, which is part of the reason why Nintendo seemed to push so hard for Paper Mario to fold into gimmickry alongside IS's moronation so it doesn't compete directly with Mario & Luigi for the RPG spot. Now that AlphaDream is dead with M&L they're freeing that up. About the only exception to the rule seems to be Metroid as a platformer, but that series is rather distinct for Nintendo altogether.

i fricking LOATHE the fact you can't exit a grand prix race if you crash out when everyone's close to finished, why the frick do you have to wait 2 minutes just to go into spectator mode and then quit
falcon = all arounder
fox = poor grip, low speed, high accel, low hp, recovers hp quickly
goose = decent grip, very high hp, recovers hp slowly
string ray = high grip, high speed, poor accel, decenty hp, better than goose recovery but still not great
Golden Fox accelerates the fastest for an early lead and recovers the most on the lane, which makes it good for boost-happy players that know the tracks. You basically take it to maximize it if you're confident you can keep a good position. The big cost is it slips and slides more so it can be tough to get a handle on, and Fox players aggressively bumped will choke hard because they also die faster.
Fire Stingray is the fastest when at maximum accel and is the best at taking sharp turns and cornering but accelerates the slowest, so it's more of a darkhorse victory of coming up from behind later in a race so long as, again, you know the track well enough, but you don't want to bump much with it or you'll be left in the dust. For dedicated raceybois.
Wild Goose isn't very good for a top position due to BULK, but is excellent for team battles where you want to eliminate the everliving frick out of other players since it's so chunky.
Blue Falcon is when you don't want to specialize and just want to do whatever.
If you're still around: Redout 1 has a better visual style, better ost, better ship handling, better resource management etc. In redout 2, its focused entirely in one mechanic, the superboost, which makes it feel less fun. The ost is also more generic unless they patched better autodj recently. Kaznarians mixes in r1 were just god tier, and you could probably have a fun rave mix if you were a real dj with them.

Years ago I had beaten every league on master level with every car except for Knight League with Golden Fox, because I could never beat Death Wind I with it. Every other car inevitably caught up and you'd have to play it perfectly to even have a chance.
I slept on Goose for a while but have come around to it because it's the most "I don't give a frick" machine. It's tough to actually win with but I can consistently place high just by cruising and crowdsurfing.
They're going to milk this for a while, but the mechanics have such a positive reception they'd be stupid for not making a new fully developed F-Zero game and using them.
This highlights the only problem in this game for me
The thruster/afterburner effect is much nicer on the SNES, when you get on the gas it slowly glows brighter with the flame/flicker effect growing stronger

Battle Royale and racing is actually one of the best ideas. Filtering losers at the end of the rat pack so they can go get a better chance in another game is better than giving them the hopes of winning against better players by handing them bullshit comeback mechanics.

Stingray is the best on literally every track in the original. The difference actually gets worse in the later cups (although it becomes harder to play too).
I've got 3 GP wins with Falcon. My results in Mute City/Big Blue usually aren't great, but I can consistently place first or top 3 in Sand Ocean, Death Wind and Silence.
Some tracks like Mute City 2 are pretty simple, Red Canyon has some design overlap with Sand Ocean and people are already finding that a challenge, but then there are the difficult tracks like White Land 2 and Fire Field. Can Stingrays dominate on Death Wind 2? It's hard to say, there's a good spread of design in the future cups.

Stingray is dangerous on DW2 because of the sharp turns with the arrow boosts, Golden Fox dominates that track.
I appreciate how close this game's physics/controls are to the original game. Mario 35 always sucked since it didn't actually control like SMB1, shit was a NSMB game wearing a NES skin.
My biggest fear about adding the BS machines is that they'll directly port them without redrawing their sprites. They have a more 3D rendered appearance which would clash hard with the early SNES original sprites.

Is there a hidden weight stat? Whenever I play goose I don't get bashed around at all, with fox I fly all over the place. Is it maybe dependent on grip?
F-Zero machines can soar through the sky at breakneck speeds, but did you know you can adjust how much time you spend in the air?
Tilting up or down changes the flight of your machine, which can be very helpful for more hang-time or a faster landing. Be sure to press down as you land to avoid losing speed!
By the way, did you know jumping on the ramps refills your spin attack? You can even use those jumps to skip corners of the track! Talk about a fly-by!

The game is so good, but the one thing I'm surprised about is that they didn't add a 5th ship or at least rebalance the original 4. Blue Falcon being dogshit dates back to the original game, as does Stingray being the best. It's odd that they didn't rebalance it, especially since this is focused around multiplayer
Golden Fox is significantly less shit to the point that it can hold its own against Fire Stingray, and Wild Goose just takes advantage of the extra chaos in general. Not my problem that Falcon's still trash.

Being the balanced option is almost always shitty in Nintendo games. One of the only exceptions I can think of is Mario actually being solid in Tennis 64 and Hoops 3 on 3.
How would you guys feel if there was a small chance for there to be modifiers to races? Like, spin attacks take half the time to charge. Or boosts last twice as long and use the same energy. Stuff like that?
As its own dedicated mode, that sounds very fun. The sort of thing where you don't know what the adjustment is until the race actually begins. It'd be dogshit as a feature in the regular races and GPs, though. Keep it as an opt-in thing and it'd do fine.

The racers were crazy like that. Read the comic and see what kind of man Falcon is. But that crash in particular was so bad I imagine no one finished. Falcon got hospitalized long enough to get cloned, Mighty Gazelle got turned into a cyborg, and they shut down the GP for like 10 years.

The first four tracks of knight league are literally just b urself tracks (if you pilot a stingray) and be good at navigating 500 bomb bumpers while maintaining your lead since Silence is the only track that requires any real track knowledge and practice. The new leagues will be very interesting.

Yes, Goose is very underrated. Highest durability so you have more meter to work with. Aside from that, it's only slightly slower than Stingray and has better acceleration to make up for it. Stingray is undoubtedly the best car on paper for time trials, but there are a lot of people arguing that Goose is the better choice for a chaotic game like this
Let's hope they keep it and really embrace the fact that its a tough as balls racer where funny bullshit can happen at any moment, but it's not so foreign that casuals can't have fun too.

in the old game he sucked but they changed the boost mechanic. now it has gx style boosting where your life gauge is your boost gauge. golden fox recovers the most health from health strips therefore he also regains the most boost and can boost more often

No, it doesn't. Mapping skyway and normal boosts to the same button ensures that someone out at the front of the pack can't just use the skyway to gain even more distance. It's a really smart gameplay choice.

Did you make use of blast turning? Tapping the acceleration button makes handling turns much easier in the GBA games. In Climax you can also hold down when turning to drift more effectively or something. You will lose speed depending on the vehicle when doing those so be mindful of that.
If you really want to experience piloting a rock try using Black Bull in GP Legend and weep.

They can just add the BS F-Zero cars, they're mainly just clones of the original game's racers but Nintendo can just tweak their stats more to make them more unique.

They might add the BS cars since they should still have the sprites for them but that's about all I can see them doing.
for a long term I can kind of see a few possibilities
-more modes, maybe allowing for 25/50 Man Races by default since the modes exist already; Death Race would be aces for this game
-more tracks, there's hints in the files that BS track data may be there, but you've got BS, MV, GP and Climax for track potential, tons of craziness with a little bit of work
-the game seems balanced and primed around the 4 machines, but it would be nice to have like, ships from some of the other games even if they're cosmetics for the pre-existing 4
I think more interesting than the one BS track data that shares a name is the fact there's signs of completely new tracks.
The one BS track in the list just being named Forest doesn't invoke much confidence in it being the BS F-Zero 2 track since it's a fairly common name. Though since the BS F-Zero 2 tracks were never archived we'll never know, which is kinda fricked up!

By all accounts, the engine is a 3D facsimile of all this anyway. there's technically nothing stopping them beyond Switch performance metrics from going F-Zero X style, so yeah this was probably an exec or creative decision.
I doesn't need to be full 3D, but I do wish there was some graphical enhancements like the track feeling more like its levitated high above the ground.

I feel like this game shows that if F Zero were to make a comeback with online play, it'd have to be altered to be more fun to newcomers and more accessible. There needs to be comeback mechanics like the skyway or bumper cars to make it not so demoralizing. GX is a great game but it would not make for a good online experience. 99 plays so well that even if you are losing its still fun.
This is what I keep saying. Multiplayer GX is only fun when people have similar skill levels and in a game where high skill is totally incomparable with low skill, it just doesn't work. What's even the point of playing multiplayer when players are not even able to interact with each other?
GX wouldn't even make for a good offline experience for newcomers, they'd get to about the casino level in story mode before crying.
Ultimately you're racing against yourself. It's all about improving your times. Being able to go fast despite all the chaos is definitely a difficult skill but even if there's little interaction sometimes all players still are trying to go faster than they did last time.

There is sales / audience overlap depending on the genre or situation, which is part of the reason why Nintendo seemed to push so hard for Paper Mario to fold into gimmickry alongside IS's moronation so it doesn't compete directly with Mario & Luigi for the RPG spot. Now that AlphaDream is dead with M&L they're freeing that up. About the only exception to the rule seems to be Metroid as a platformer, but that series is rather distinct for Nintendo altogether.

fox = poor grip, low speed, high accel, low hp, recovers hp quickly
goose = decent grip, very high hp, recovers hp slowly
string ray = high grip, high speed, poor accel, decenty hp, better than goose recovery but still not great

Golden Fox accelerates the fastest for an early lead and recovers the most on the lane, which makes it good for boost-happy players that know the tracks. You basically take it to maximize it if you're confident you can keep a good position. The big cost is it slips and slides more so it can be tough to get a handle on, and Fox players aggressively bumped will choke hard because they also die faster.
Fire Stingray is the fastest when at maximum accel and is the best at taking sharp turns and cornering but accelerates the slowest, so it's more of a darkhorse victory of coming up from behind later in a race so long as, again, you know the track well enough, but you don't want to bump much with it or you'll be left in the dust. For dedicated raceybois.
Wild Goose isn't very good for a top position due to BULK, but is excellent for team battles where you want to eliminate the everliving frick out of other players since it's so chunky.
Blue Falcon is when you don't want to specialize and just want to do whatever.

If you're still around: Redout 1 has a better visual style, better ost, better ship handling, better resource management etc. In redout 2, its focused entirely in one mechanic, the superboost, which makes it feel less fun. The ost is also more generic unless they patched better autodj recently. Kaznarians mixes in r1 were just god tier, and you could probably have a fun rave mix if you were a real dj with them.

Years ago I had beaten every league on master level with every car except for Knight League with Golden Fox, because I could never beat Death Wind I with it. Every other car inevitably caught up and you'd have to play it perfectly to even have a chance.

Battle Royale and racing is actually one of the best ideas. Filtering losers at the end of the rat pack so they can go get a better chance in another game is better than giving them the hopes of winning against better players by handing them bullshit comeback mechanics.

Stingray is the best on literally every track in the original. The difference actually gets worse in the later cups (although it becomes harder to play too).
I've got GP wins on every kart, just play each kart to their strengths even if it means being a Super Boost squatter

Last night another goose and myself took 2nd and 3rd in the grand prix (1st was a stingger) so it's definitely possible.
I've got 3 GP wins with Falcon. My results in Mute City/Big Blue usually aren't great, but I can consistently place first or top 3 in Sand Ocean, Death Wind and Silence.
Some tracks like Mute City 2 are pretty simple, Red Canyon has some design overlap with Sand Ocean and people are already finding that a challenge, but then there are the difficult tracks like White Land 2 and Fire Field. Can Stingrays dominate on Death Wind 2? It's hard to say, there's a good spread of design in the future cups.

Stingray is dangerous on DW2 because of the sharp turns with the arrow boosts, Golden Fox dominates that track.

My biggest fear about adding the BS machines is that they'll directly port them without redrawing their sprites. They have a more 3D rendered appearance which would clash hard with the early SNES original sprites.

The game is so good, but the one thing I'm surprised about is that they didn't add a 5th ship or at least rebalance the original 4. Blue Falcon being dogshit dates back to the original game, as does Stingray being the best. It's odd that they didn't rebalance it, especially since this is focused around multiplayer
Golden Fox is significantly less shit to the point that it can hold its own against Fire Stingray, and Wild Goose just takes advantage of the extra chaos in general. Not my problem that Falcon's still trash.

I was referring to car balance which I don't think they'll modify. I would welcome more cars and tracks and would be especially neat if they got the BS cars and tracks that are otherwise lost forever.
The machines have been rebalanced. Data miners have also uncovered what might be more machines for later release, so stay tuned to see if it pans out.
Being the balanced option is almost always shitty in Nintendo games. One of the only exceptions I can think of is Mario actually being solid in Tennis 64 and Hoops 3 on 3.

As its own dedicated mode, that sounds very fun. The sort of thing where you don't know what the adjustment is until the race actually begins. It'd be dogshit as a feature in the regular races and GPs, though. Keep it as an opt-in thing and it'd do fine.

It's a good idea to do that because as I mentioned in today's tip, a ramp instantly refills your spin attack. You have nothing to lose.

The racers were crazy like that. Read the comic and see what kind of man Falcon is. But that crash in particular was so bad I imagine no one finished. Falcon got hospitalized long enough to get cloned, Mighty Gazelle got turned into a cyborg, and they shut down the GP for like 10 years.
The machine is destroyed but not the person. They probably innovated a way to save the racer from death.

Does anyone else find it easier to place high in the later tracks of Knight League? I'll constantly drown in the pack on Mute City, but if I make it to Silence I'm somehow the only one not having trouble with the turns.
I've found Mute City to always be a crapshoot, finishing around 25-30th place. But after that it's much easier to place top 10.
The first four tracks of knight league are literally just b urself tracks (if you pilot a stingray) and be good at navigating 500 bomb bumpers while maintaining your lead since Silence is the only track that requires any real track knowledge and practice. The new leagues will be very interesting.

Yes, Goose is very underrated. Highest durability so you have more meter to work with. Aside from that, it's only slightly slower than Stingray and has better acceleration to make up for it. Stingray is undoubtedly the best car on paper for time trials, but there are a lot of people arguing that Goose is the better choice for a chaotic game like this
