No, he's implying that older FFs weren't "we want the HBO presents song of ice and fire as game of thrones a TV adaption kind of audience" type of games. Don't worry, nobody expected a homosexual who fell for it to understand nuance.

You must be very cultureless to assume everything is trying to copy a television fad from the last decade.

GoT was a cultural phenomenon, just objectively (it obviously shot itself in the foot near the end which killed almost all staying power it had), and more fantasy games SHOULD learn by it.
Not necessarily Final Fantasy though, which have always been very romantic games. The edgier stuff has always been relegated to spinoffs like Tactics and Type-0.

Why would Jill fricking be implicit about that situation, though? Yeah, Final Fantasy being flowery IS to be expected, but it was very obvious Jill was in panic mode at that moment. The Japanese term "手籠め" translates to "captivity" or "confinement" in English. It can refer to a situation where someone is held captive or confined against their will.
Yes, in a historical or literary context, the Japanese term "手籠め" can imply sexual assault or rape, particularly in a context where someone is captured or confined. However, it's important to note that the term itself doesn't explicitly mean "rape" - it conveys a broader sense of captivity or confinement. The specific implications can depend on the context in which it's used.

It doesn't always mean rape but it does 90% of the time. The connotations are very strong. Its related words on dictionary sites are 暴行, 強姦, 凌, etc for a reason.

Yeah, nobody argued it was a rogue translator. Yoshi is obviously meticulous about his work. "Corrections" like this is done in agreement with the studio.
"Hey, we believe that if this passage was framed like this, it would make more sense to western audience."
"Okay, but will it have impact? I mean, you know your demographic best, but I really want to to rattle the player "
"Yeah yeah yeah no worries it's basically the same"
                >you said it was all due to sony nonsense, trump level bullshit
Back to English? Thanks, that's convenient.
Are you arguing that Sony and other Western publishers have not been pressuring developers to tone down the sexualisation of characters and dialogue? You're framing your answer as if that's some wild conspiracy. How many anime games have been retouched and censored the last few years? I've lost track.
Regardless, I don't know the reason and I have no proof that it was a publisher meddling with their largest release this year or the developers own prerogative to tone down the western release. I don't really care either way, since we obviously know why it happened.

Again, that context points towards rape, yes? You wouldn't yell about your child being in handcuffs if it has been shot, right? Every single dictionary in this thread has had "rape" as the main translation to the word, it fits in the context, but it was not included in English.
You try to assert a dialogue between translator and developer as some kind of proof against fallibility. I guarantee you that every line has been gone over by both sides. It seems they agreed that a more toned down version was best for the western market.
Very odd to me that you're so vested in shutting down any speculation about censorship, over liberties in interpretation or even errors in translation.

We can pick different dictionaries all day to get the meaning we "want" to appear, but the fact remains that 手籠め's intent in this precise scenario is one where the captive parties were subjected to sexual assault. I would translate it as “to violate” because, similar to the English, it could mean more than just “rape” and is similarly not as blunt, but it’s clear in this context that they were sexually violated.

            Anonymous

            To clear up any confusion:
1.) To violate (English) can mean a lot of things, but in the case of violating a woman, it means you did something sexual to her against her will (ie. stuck a dildo up her ass, poured dripping wax on her breasts, etc. Sex of course is included in this but not necessarily present). Rape typically is more explicit of a word and used when yoy want to make it clear he penetrated her with his penis, but you see “violate” sometimes, especially in older contexts, when people wanted to say a woman was raped but without completely embarrassing her.
2.) Japanese word in FF16 is basically the same as this. It doesn’t mean simply “imprisoned” like some idiots are claiming. It also isn’t quite as directly explicit as 強姦 either though.

Translation isn't black and white, right or wrong. There is always subjectivity.
It's fairly obvious the translators chose to go with an interpretation more palatable to the West, while ignoring that the context made rape the obvious meaning.
Why would she be upset and screaming about the captivity aspect if the kids had been murdered? That would be like someone shouting about their car door being scratched before it was stolen and wrecked by thieves.
        Rape, however, would make sense.

The game was very inspired by GoT, where rape is prominently used for shock value.

I totally agree about sexuality. Maybe not the West as much as America, but it's fixated on it. Such a phrase could raise alarm and controversy, making it much safer to interpret it this way.
If America was more rational we wouldn't be having this conversation.

          >while ignoring that the context made rape the obvious meaning.
Isn't that fine though? I don't think you need to spell it out it's pretty obvious (at least to me) from prior scenes with Jill

            Anonymous

Nah, it's not too major if not "fine", but the argument that it hasn't been translated with liberal interpretation irks me

              I'd agree with that.
I don't particularly care too much though. I've found many instances on both sides where the localization felt better on the english side compared to what was originally said in japanese and vice versa.

手籠め explicitly spells out violent rape.
      The English script is censored.

Um, excuse me anon. I think I read enough doujin to have a solid grasp on what that word means. This guy here got the translation right

        English version:
        >They kidnapped the children for something... unspeakable.
        Japanese version:
        >They took ALL of the underaged children, the babies, even those of fourteen or fifteen, and raped them all. They raped every single last one of them. The shota and the josei... I can see their little cunnies now overflowing with monster sperm! I wonder how many of those delicate prime bodies have been impregnated, and all of our growing boys are now femslaves who live to suck big orc dicks! And even though they claim they didn't want it, we could hear the sounds of their screaming orgasms here in the village, miles away. If you listen, you can hear them too! Oh, I can just picture all the fricking, dick sucking, hand holding, and anal going on at this very moment! Please, you must save our children from being pocket pussies for the rest of their lives!
So much lore is lost in these censored translations.

He is not even credited as a writer in the game, the writers are Kazutoyo Maehiro, Kazuyo Murakami, Saki Inatsugu, Keitaro Sato, Yuki Umeda and Chihiro Ochiai.

When you have female captives or women in dangerous situations, they are 100% going to get raped. It's like, basically a law.
A grimdark fantasy will have them get groped a bit, but then the hero will come in and heroically save them. A really dark series like the Prince of Nothing will actually have penetration.

        Anonymous

        > A really dark series like the Prince of Nothing will actually have penetration.
lol isn't that a given in rape?
Something really dark would be some kind of torture or mutilation.
It's funny how the act of penetration is so disgusting to some. The horrible aspect of rape comes not only from pp in dicky, but from the feeling of being invaded, the powerlessness, deprecation of self-worth and disgust for the act and its cruelty.

That's the thing, even stuff like the First Law never has a rape actually go through. The girl's shirt will get torn a little, she'll struggle, then the good guy will come in and kill the bad guy in a really terrible way.
Only the darkest fantasy stories actually have the "Yeah, his wiener is in her right now and he's pumping away" thing.

Like bring in Imreann in earlier as somebody trading in bearers, etc from the mainland. Intertwining Jill's story with that of the plot at that time. Make us able to explore the island post crystal destruction.

Why is rape ok in Berserk, but not in FF

      saucy

Berserk has a good tone for defecation and defilement.

Final Fantasy doesn't even remotely set a tone for bodily violation.

FF16 absolutely sets that tone with the whole Eikon taking over Clive

You know shit like that avoids being explicit as much as possible?
It can be read as handcuffed, but in general it's used as a indirect way of saying rape.
Also use your brain cells "they hand-cuffed and kill them" is a moronic-ass line.

Don't care, Jill was deflowered by Clive, some dead kids doesn't add anything more to the scene that anyone with half a brain could peice together, Jill awakened Shiva when she was going to be abused like those kids but since they regard bearers and dominants as subhuman abominations she was spared that treatment and instead was threatened into priming and doing their evil shit so they wouldn't abuse the other kids like in the prologue.
Oh and Koji Fox's localization work is credited as co-writing in the credits so you can't simply imply it was Japanese only work.

    >it means rape only in a context
    >context is explicitly rape
Like... why are you Black folk even arguing this, if they didn't want to allude to rape they wouldn't have used 手籠め. 手籠め is not used if you want to talk about apprehending or detaining people, don't think the writer was moronic and didn't want to evoke that image.

      Anonymous

      >手籠め is not used if you want to talk about apprehending or detaining people,

      そりゃ手籠めにはたんに捕獲するという以上に自分のものにして危害を加えるという意味が含まれているからな

      バカはもう黙っていたほうがいいぞ

      誰も辞書の定義の二項目にある「女性を犯すこと」が「強姦」を意味することを否定していないんだよなあ

      問題は手籠めとは常に強姦を意味するわけではない、ということなのだが、ガイジンくんにはそれがわからないようだ
