The only thing the overwhelming majority of FFVII fans wanted was a faithful recreation of the original. A change due to gameplay differences would have been received just fine, but most wanted teh same story beats with the same characters, and NOT another sequel. That is precisely why extended universe FFVII games sold progressively worse as time went on. That is why they stopped making them for years.
Who said anything about replacing it? REmake doesn't replace RE1, I play both and quite enjoy them. The difference is one respected the original and brought it into a new era with better graphics and updated gameplay, while the other was just yet another sequel with off-the-wall antics that were never present in the original.

My dad who played FF7 on PS1 back in the day was just confused and lost all interest after Remake. He said the combat and graphics was cool but that the story didn't make sense and was just plain confusing(he haven't watched Advent Children or other FF7 "expanded universe" stuff). Also was confused that the game ended after Midgar.
He hasn't played Rebirth, but he in general doesn't play vidya much these days. Just played Remake at his friend's place.
I played the demo and lost all interest when they showed Shinra blowing up their own reactor with robots. And that was well before all the time ghost shit became common knowledge. All they had to do was remake the fricking game so it's amusing watching it come back to bite them in the ass.
I think the moment when I knew things were pretty fricked was when they actually went down in the elevator. The dialogue was good, but the elevator was wildly pristine and sterile, when in the original everything was all Akira-style with wires and all dirty and shit. I thought it must have just been a one-off because the enemies were all on-point. Then I realized that is the entire game. The ONLY things that are done well are the character models and the enemy models. That's it.
Square still thinks it’s the late 90s/early 00 and they are a leader in graphical performance. This results in games being way too expensive and take too long for how much they actually make. They’ve burned all their goodwill and they’ve fallen behind the big companies. You are right anon in that it should have been one game, but Square had to be “cutting edge” which means way more detail then you could do in one game. You can’t make the same overworld the first had in the style of game they wanted to make. Square needs to reevaluate who they are in the current landscape.

You stop making so many Final Fantasy games so frequently and stop treating it like it's something you can use to suck money out of people. It's a big brand in the west but this isn't the PS1 and PS2 era anymore. People have been burned by XIII, XV, and FFVII:R now. The fans are there as evidenced by XIII's original sales figures but you just keep making awful decisions or stepping away from what makes Final Fantasy what it is.
Chocobo's Racing GP should have been such a simple thing to achieve. Why in the hell did it have a battle pass? Why did it have cosmetic microtransactions? This is what caused Crash Team Racing's remake to get panned. Just look at Mario Kart and its success. It has none of those, it just sells you new maps which come with additional characters and carts. How hard could it have been to follow that? You would have completely avoided the backlash for the insane prices and battle pass if you did that and it would still be a minor success today.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered doesn't even have local co-op, something the original was entirely based around. Why would you do that when you already had to set up the system for online anyway?
Final Fantasy Dissidia NT is the complete antithesis to everything everyone liked about Dissidia. Why is it 3v3? Why is the RPG system gone? Why did they think this would be a success at all?
XV and XVI have moved away from the turn-based combat which has completely bit them in the ass as evidenced by Yakuza 8 and Persona getting bigger while their side games like Octopath Traveler show that people want turn-based. You have the ability to make these games turn-based, why are you so insistent on "appealing to the youth of today" and all that by making these pseudo action games where the RPG stuff barely matters at all?

I also didn't do girugamesh and the bandit shit, but otherwise did everything in the game and clocked out at about 90 hours. Remake, doing LITERALLY EVERYTHING took me about 50-60. The chadley intel isn't all too bad because they're relatively close together usually, but gongaga and cosmo canyon are fricking terrible. The proto relic shit, especially the dumb cactuar shit, REEKS of padding (follow beam to statue, get to statue, watch meaningless cutscene, go back, do training course, more cutscenes).
And good fricking god don't get me started on the side quests. Look, the dog escort is cool and quirky, cissnei is cool, and basically everything else is fricking awful.
Rebirth is the SINGLE most padded video game I have ever played in my life. I'm not even saying it's a bad game you fricks. It's good (up until the ending), but oh my fricking god if you don't think it's padded you're moronic

The only thing the overwhelming majority of FFVII fans wanted was a faithful recreation of the original. A change due to gameplay differences would have been received just fine, but most wanted teh same story beats with the same characters, and NOT another sequel. That is precisely why extended universe FFVII games sold progressively worse as time went on. That is why they stopped making them for years.
So what fans wanted was a replacement. Why would you want to replace something that’s already good?

Who said anything about replacing it? REmake doesn't replace RE1, I play both and quite enjoy them. The difference is one respected the original and brought it into a new era with better graphics and updated gameplay, while the other was just yet another sequel with off-the-wall antics that were never present in the original.

My dad who played FF7 on PS1 back in the day was just confused and lost all interest after Remake. He said the combat and graphics was cool but that the story didn't make sense and was just plain confusing(he haven't watched Advent Children or other FF7 "expanded universe" stuff). Also was confused that the game ended after Midgar.
He hasn't played Rebirth, but he in general doesn't play vidya much these days. Just played Remake at his friend's place.
I played the demo and lost all interest when they showed Shinra blowing up their own reactor with robots. And that was well before all the time ghost shit became common knowledge. All they had to do was remake the fricking game so it's amusing watching it come back to bite them in the ass.
I think the moment when I knew things were pretty fricked was when they actually went down in the elevator. The dialogue was good, but the elevator was wildly pristine and sterile, when in the original everything was all Akira-style with wires and all dirty and shit. I thought it must have just been a one-off because the enemies were all on-point. Then I realized that is the entire game. The ONLY things that are done well are the character models and the enemy models. That's it.

It's a big brand in the west but this isn't the PS1 and PS2 era anymore. People have been burned by XIII, XV, and FFVII:R now. The fans are there as evidenced by XIII's original sales figures but you just keep making awful decisions or stepping away from what makes Final Fantasy what it is.
Chocobo's Racing GP should have been such a simple thing to achieve. Why in the hell did it have a battle pass? Why did it have cosmetic microtransactions? This is what caused Crash Team Racing's remake to get panned. Just look at Mario Kart and its success. It has none of those, it just sells you new maps which come with additional characters and carts. How hard could it have been to follow that? You would have completely avoided the backlash for the insane prices and battle pass if you did that and it would still be a minor success today.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered doesn't even have local co-op, something the original was entirely based around. Why would you do that when you already had to set up the system for online anyway?

The chadley intel isn't all too bad because they're relatively close together usually, but gongaga and cosmo canyon are fricking terrible. The proto relic shit, especially the dumb cactuar shit, REEKS of padding (follow beam to statue, get to statue, watch meaningless cutscene, go back, do training course, more cutscenes).
And good fricking god don't get me started on the side quests. Look, the dog escort is cool and quirky, cissnei is cool, and basically everything else is fricking awful.

When the Gooch was still working in Square, they bounced ideas, often went back in stupid decisions, toned things down, split excessive ideas into different games (FFVII had so much shit that these elements would end up in Parasite Eve, Xenogears, FFVII and FFVIII).Plus the rule of "no sequels" made each game more complete, as they had to put everything to make the story cohesive in that one single game. They had one chance at making it right, no retconning or expanding convoluted shit at a later date.
It was just a better environment to make good games.

People don't understand that exclusivity deals over the years don't only affect short term sales, but the long term reputation of the franchise. If a lot of people start skipping some titles, they still get less and less interested in the series. Plus you miss out on a lot of new fans.
