Early drafts of the game, she was.
Aerith and Tifa were one character at some point during conception. There was even a point in time where Aerith's physical design was just Tifa while they were jumbling around trying to finalize it.
They went with the design they did because they decided that Aerith and Sephiroth were supposed to be siblings.
But then that went out the window, and Nomura also really wanted to use the Tifa design he made, so they then decided on a love triangle.

Hell, Aerith's first SOLDIER boyfriend wasn't even Zack in one draft. It was Sephiroth.
This game has had some pretty crazy development history and there are a hundred different ways it could have gone.
Honestly if they were going to do a remake but not a remake, in hindsight, it would have been cool if they just did a retelling using a bunch of elements from early OG game production that never made it past the cutting room floor. Then the original game remains untouched, and you still get the same basic premise, but everything is new and different while also being familiar.
But maybe I just suck at ideas and that would have been horrible. Idk.

Aerith lost all of those memories when the whispers took them in Shinra tower. She doesn't gain them back until after the Temple of the Ancients when Cloud hops into the dream date timeline where the white materia still has all of her happy memories inside. Shortly after this, Aerith is killed again.
So while she could use the lifestream to find out about the real Cloud, she still hasn't MET the real Cloud. The real Cloud is still buried under false memories and Jenova's influence.
This is not hard to understand.

No it wasn't. Why was it "dark" exactly? Because a few villains died? Some people died on screen? Yea that's cool and different for an FF game, but there's no psychological darkness to any of the characters, and neither is it explained well at all. Time travel is not alternate versions of the same universe. Final Fantasy VIII has time travel too and that is just a time loop too.

The problem with the whole alternate timeline shit isn't that it isn't consistent with VII's lore, it's that it's confusing and cheapens the ending of the game.

In the original, Aerith's death is sudden and poignant. In Rebirth it's convoluted and drawn out. Sephiroth being a timelord doesn't make him more interesting as a character. He's still just an evil edgelord with very basic motivations.

Nomura is just being Nomura again, writing a bunch of needlessly complicated bullshit that won't pay off.
