It's a thing in Xenoblade 2 that nearly all Blades have Japanese names (save for a few exceptions like KOS-MOS for obvious reasons) while non-Blades have English names
But then the localization team just said "eh screw it, just give everyone English-souding names for no apparent reason, except that Azami girl, leave her name Japanese for no reason either", I never understood this decision, I guess it just carried out to 3

"Mashiro" is a Japanese name for a Japanese character that means "white" in Japanese.

In the translation, this character is no longer Japanese. So now, "Fiona" is an Irish name for an Irish character that means "white" in Gaelic.

It is literally a direct translation. It cannot get any more accurate. You disrespect the source material by insisting on using a name whose meaning you don't understand simply because it's a different language.

            >tokyo is fucking tokyo
Fun fact: it's actually Toukyou in Japanese. From 東 (tou) meaning "East" and 京 (kyou) meaning "Capital." Same with Osaka actually being Oosaka and Kyoto actually being Kyouto.
I'm not sure how or why their names got shortened in English.

              Anonymous

"ou" being a longer "o" is a weird Japanese thing. By writing it Tokyo, Kyoto, etc (in pretty much every language) you get an instinctive reading that is closer to the actual Japanese sound.

                Anonymous

I'd argue that "ou" is a pretty different sound than "oo" in Japanese, but I suppose it does read a not lot more naturally to an English-speaker without the extra vowels.
I do feel the need to point out that the pronunciation aspect doesn't work for every language. In my native language, Danish, it's also spelled "Tokyo," but because of how we pronounce words over here, it ends up sounding more like "Tawkyo," which is obviously nowhere near the actual pronunciation. In this instance, the "u" would actually be really helpful in teaching the proper pronunciation. Funny how that works.

I can't believe that I'm nearly 40 and we're still fighting the battle to ensure that Japanese audio is included as an option whenever it it is the native language of the game, and that scripts are not censored, localized in stupid ways, or otherwise fucked. It shouldn't be this difficult.

It’ll probably always be this way, it’s obviously not the ideal but the odds of things improving is close to nil

        Anonymous

Why? I mean, technically a lot of the things that were holding things back in the old days have been resolved

        >Oh westerners won't want Japanese media to be too Japanese its hard for them to comprehend
        >Oh vidya are for children so sayeth Nintendo
        >Nobody takes vidya seriously as artistic value, so we don't put any effort into trying to accurately tell a compelling story. Its all simplistic bleeps and bloops to a couple of pixels walking across the screen!
        >We don't have the room on the limited cartridge or disc systems to include a whole separate audio version and there's no way to download or update it after shipping.
        Etc.

I used to make Undubs back in the day and one project fell into my lap because I was one of the only ones who had a dual-layer DVD ripper/burner (DVD9). So while some of it was just crappy vidya localization there were some technical limitations, popularity, niche interests, Japanese figuring that their media wasn't desired/comprehended by foreigners etc. but a lot of this has all elapsed yet its STILL going on? This atop the "localization" where the translator tries to remove something they find objectionable which is its own problem, but at least all the other big problems should be dealt with outside of very niche (ie Japanese IP is still garbage so sometimes distribution rights for a song or whatever the IP owner wants double or triple for overseas...but at least these are usually easy mods if you can find the content intended for the JP version).

proabbly something about numbers or something, or the fact that a lot of localizers are failed writers using their job as a vehicle to shoehorn their own stories in and dont want people to experience the original

they just learn japanese so they can put "multilingual" on their resume, not because they like japan. asian languages are notoriously hard to learn, i'd imagine that would look good to any employer.

                Anonymous

Japanese is a hard language to just learn to be multilingual and Mandarin Chinese is a better option for business purposes than Japanese.

              Anonymous

theyre also failed translators. if they actually were professional translators they'd be translating business emails or industrial manuals for shitload of money instead of localizing games for pennies.

            Anonymous

Numbers wise a lot of these games do well or at least well enough for their niche. In fact, its often cheaper to leave the original audio and then just make an accurate to the original intent translation for subtitles, vs a "localization" that tries to overwrite everything.

As far as failed writers or fanfiction/censorship bullshit, shouldn't the original company and the management try to put a stop to this? Your job is to convey the original intent, not make up your own loosely connected story. I was always more on the technical side when it came to undubs and only have a modest spoken (and less written)) Japanese comprehension but if fan translation and undub projects can have some level of quality control, then you'd imagine even some lower tier JP devpublisher of A/AA games (and certainly indies) would want their work represented accurately

              >shouldn't the original company and the management try to put a stop to this?
they don't give a fuck. americans eat it up regardless and anyone there who cares already has the original script and understands it perfectly. if people stopped buying games with godawful translations enough to put a dent in sales maybe things would change but that isnt ever going to happen, look at pokemon.

                Anonymous

Do they though? Some may not have the knowledge to know any differences but there are plenty of those who have at least some understanding or do the "huh, oh so the name in Japanese was different than English. Oh I wonder why let me look it up. Ahh, oh cool it was designed to all be thematic so each of them meant something special etc" and would prefer the more accurate translation. Maybe its just being an oldfag, but even the Fatlus stereotypes and others who wanted Japanese media greatly preferred subs to dubs, accurate translations with honorifics and cultural specific jokes retained (having a translator's note, depending on the media, is preferable to removing etc). I though that was the weeb stereotype that people cared about the minutia. Is that really changing? Maybe it is for the younger crowd or something. There's a huge gulf between "doesn't know any of the language or culture" to "can read/watch/play and entire work in its native language with full comprehension" and most people are just not that fluent, but that doesn't mean they dont' give a shit.

Unfortunately not buying things when the translation sucks seems, like many other situations in gaming (ie not buying because there's no Linux version, or shitty monetization, or anything else), to not be accurately understood by the developers/publisher.. They just figure "people didn't like it, we won't make more" typically. If you can manage to get a big social media campaign or something like Op Rainfall that's one thing, but its even more contentious now. I mean, look at the Fire Emblem Engage Uncensor Patch - https://varishangout.com/index.php?threads/fire-emblem-engage-uncensored-patch.1730/ - ambitious as all fuck that they made it this far, but 99% of the bitching is about "e-boie-boiPEDOPEDO" and other garbage and it isn't even allowed on Gamebanana/Nexusmods

yes. the majority of adult players now played the westernized versions of games growing up. nobody calls mega man "rockman", even the weeb fans. or all the people still bitter over robotnik being changed back to eggman. fans who prefer the original material are still mocked and treated as a small vocal minority of purist weebs. with crunchyroll and shit like that anime dubs are in the mainstream, and a lot of zoomers grew up with dubbed anime on TV. most people watch the dub of dragon ball/one piece/naruto etc.. the thing about banning retranslation/undub mods i will never understand though.

They don't care, Angloid eat up that shit, hell they expect it.

Go to the X2 gamefaqs board and search for people complaining about the localization, they always get dog piled by apologist.

                Firstly
                >gamefaqs board
Secondly it might be different if people complaining about localization actually had legit criticisms but 99% of the time it's inane autistic shit like "nooo they changed shintakawashihiti's name to 'clover', unplayable!!!!"

Nintendo doesn't understand their audience. People that play game like xenoblade are not the same toddlers that play mario and pokemon they are weebs that are already deep into otaku culture.

They won't have problem with characters that have Japanese name

Most gamers even those who claim to be anime fans love dubs and extreme localization though.

Localization is tolerable when every name in your game is a pun of something.
In Xeno 3, it's like translating Rudy to Valdi. both derived from Vivaldi.

You anti-localizer JP-only fags are just as annoying as the chud localizers. Who gives a shit whether it's Homora/Hikari or Pyra/Mythra, it changes literally nothing and the character still sucks regardless.
Also just because you can't understand the language doesn't mean the voice work is good, the only reason you prefer the JP voices over the EN voices is because in one the voice acting is bad and you can understand that it's bad, in the other the voice acting is bad but you're just blissfully unaware of that fact.

Xenoblade's naming localization scheme is wacky, on one hand you Pyra and Mythra which sure makes sense haha i get it, but then this fucker's name is PERCIVAL, no he isn't

Worst part is that he was a reference to the skell also named Vasara in XCX which was still "Vasara" in the localization.

Another day, another Xeno fag or FE fag complaining about localizations. NoA was right to have never localized anime shit in the 2000's.
