there needs to be some level of commitment to developing the lore or the 343 games will have no identity of their own. scrapping everything for each new entry is not good for a franchise

Absolutely. It's one of my biggest gripes w/343's Halo. Infinite was the most interested I've ever been in Halo's story since 3. But now it's all gone. They needed some kind of roadmap. A way to keep making Halo trilogies for the foreseeable future while allowing for experimentation to keep things fresh.

The way Nintendo (as much as I hate them) treats Zelda is a good example of what Halo could/should have been for Xbox. A game that FANS are guaranteed to love, is released infrequently and only when it is ready, maximizing sales is not the goal - it doesn't matter if it doesn't sell 10mill copies, it's purpose is to hold up the brand and ship hardware.

Every tendy knows that if they buy a Nintendo, then at least Zelda and bingbing wahoo will be good. Sony fans know that when they buy a PS, at the very least God of War and Spiderman will be good. But if you buy an Xbox, there is a 90% chance that you will hate Halo.
            Why is that Microsoft? 343?

343's ability to take good concepts(story, gameplay, or otherwise) and frick them up so hard that people reject them entirely is genuinely impressive
They can't even design something as simple as a human gun correctly, they just take a CoD weapon and give it a cute nickname that's out of place with everything else in the series

              Anonymous

Its because they pandered to lore gays like you. Halo was great originally because Bungie understood that story is just an excuse to setup cool levels and enemies. It all went to shit as soon as MS started whoring the franchise out with the books.

                Anonymous

That has less to do with the lore itself and more to do with the fact that 343 are completely incompetent at telling a good story. It's not a bad idea to say, "Wouldn't it be really cool to make a game where chief fights with blue team from the books?" but another thing entirely to say "Wouldn't it be really cool to make a game where chief fights with blue team from the books?" and then proceed to do absolutely nothing with them by making them the most cookie-cutter, one-dimensional carboard stand-ins that are featured for a fraction of the story while you spend all their time shilling their shitty spartan OCs.

Disagree. Blue team from the books was gay as frick. The story of the original trilogy was just good campy fun. I don't want to and shouldn't need to read extended universe BS to enjoy the story. And the games tone never should have turned serious. The books and extended universe shouldn't exist.

There are plenty of valid comparisons to make to shit on 343, and you had to go and cherrypick ones with completely different story purposes, as if you couldn't find 2 scenes within Halo 2 alone that had wildly different tones

That is what we disagree on. So many IPs are ruined when the company caters to super fans that care too much about lore and want a cohesive narrative universe. It restricts what can happen gameplay and story wise and always devolves into increasing serious worldbuilding.

Alright Star Wars is debatable fair enough. I think we can all agree that Disney is the biggest factor one way or another. That said autistic super fans taking over an IPs lore and turning into super serious tryhard lore is a factor in many IPs downfall. But it is probably impossible to truly prove that is the biggest factor in any specific IPs decline.

Google confirms this interesting. Honestly this just re-enforces my idea that was pandering to lore gays that killed the series. Under Bungie the books may as well have not existed. I'm thinking it was lore gays complaining about Reach not following the books that causes MS to want to stick to extended universe lore when they took over.

The funny thing about Reach retconning the book is that Reach still references The Fall of Reach more than Halo 4 does the books it draws from- and those books were literally commissioned as part of the buildup to Halo 4
The difference is that 4's is directly relevant to the plot in one scene that was also written horribly, whereas Reach has its own separate dramatic story to tell involving mostly unrelated characters

Based on the Clone Wars animation paired with ODST, this is a quality comparison. If it is, I haven't seen the animated series or Rogue One but heard the former is OK and the latter sucked ass. Reach didn't suck ass in my opinion, it was OK but had the signs of an impending downfall.
How different is the DMR from BR REALLY? Both games are better when the equivalent gun isn't something you spawn with.

Rogue One is used as the point of comparison for Reach in that image mainly because the bleak tone and the main thrust of the plot is pretty similar and people didn't like it as much as 3 so it's convenient for what the image is trying to communicate

Forge is great, and there are some playlists where you can play players-created maps, or even remastered maps from Halo 2/3. Custom games with unique modes and maps. The sandbox is nice when you get to play AR slayer on the new maps they've been releasing (I know a lot of maps are poo poo nonetheless).
They make free events where you can get some customization with new gamemodes.

Halo 1 to 3 fanbase is in their early to mid 30s now at the youngest and early to mid 40s at the oldest. They have the most disposable income, but they also have the highest standards and greatest amount of scrutiny on tap they can use to make meaningful change.

Children on the other hand are weak and can be fed propaganda and turned against their older siblings and parents to act as ingress vector to make FRICK LOADS OF MONEY. Which is what 343i and Microsoft execs are after: a new generation of manipulated and easily exploitable fanbase that will willingly shell out huge amounts of dollars in support of microtransaction efforts with negligible amount of push back. Delivering a "Halo experience" to "Halo fans" was never the goal. Delivering a monetizable strategy that generates recurring long term revenue was the goal, and whoever was trampled in the process was simply collateral.

That kind of mindset and hubris is what leads to the leaked email where Phil Spencer thought he could just do an indirect hostile takeover of Nintendo and call it a career defining move. They don't give a shit about the fans, the community, or the longevity of the product: they want money and everything else is a stepping stone to the prestige and money.

I don't think anyone really intends to kill a cash cow or a big IP, counter to what some people suggest when SW/Disney, etc. comes up. I think certain companies just think that if they just make some kind of close-enough approximation of the product they think people want and then dump enormous money and effort into marketing, the IP will just make money. And when it doesn't, it doesn't prove they did a bad job, it just proves there's no money in that IP (to them). Basically they either don't want or don't know how to make a good thing, but they also don't seem to notice that, or care

This is what happens when you start making sequels to a franchise that already concluded, reach and odst exist because while microsoft wanted to milk the cow, bungie already knew halo was a trilogy and 3 was the ending of master chief story. Maybe next time if there is a next time for microblunder now that their console is irrelevant they should move on to NEW franchises or at least limit themselves to spinoffs, halo and gears were at their prime on the 360 early life and now they are at their 6th game and counting, total shame
