frick yeah it is. i use krita for usual digital art but aseprite is unbeatable for pixelshit.

i paid for it because it's good

I use it. It has a lot of useful features, such as being able to create animation frames and flip between them. It's not like Clip Studio Paint or Paintshop charging you 50$+ a year, it's a one time payment of 20$, as far as gamedevving goes that isn't much.

That's a good Nemissa, I assume you made it? Dumb question, but when making human characters do you start with mannequins? I know most people do it for traditional art, I was wondering if it helped with pixel.

      >tfw aseprite can be compiled with a single command if you're an arch linux chad

Is that an older version or something? Why would the developers put their non-free software in the AUR?

          >Why would the developers put their non-free software in the AUR?
The devs didn't put it in the AUR. Like many AUR packages, it's literally just a script to fetch the sources from github and resolve any dependencies. It doesn't violate any EULA either as long as you don't distribute the binaries you build to anyone.

So the latest version of Aseprite is free for the taking as long as you use Arch, btw?

it's free if you compile it yourself since the source is freely available, it's not restricted to arch

you can just use libresprite which is the same thing but foss

I've heard using a program like Krita or Procreate and just learning how to make pixel art in something like that is way more efficient. Any truth to that statement?

Just download 10 GB of dependencies and compile it yourself dum dum

How the FRICK do you actually start to make pixel art? Freehand drawing pixel by pixel on paint.net is fine for maybe getting your feet wet, but I can't imagine most of these people are doing that consistently for a whole indie game. And trying to look up guides/tutorials just leads to nothing but artists either shilling their software of choice or an hour-long video of them making 1 character with none of the explanation why they're making the choices they are for things like shading, anatomy, etc.

There is no secret. You practice until you're good at it, like drawing.

The secret is that you need to be good with actual art first in order to be good at pixel art.

      >inb4 some inane bullshit about this guy or something
Whatever, if you don't like this one there are countless tutorials on youtube to get you started. Like the other anon said, it's a skill, just practice.Other aspects of art apply to it, which again, can be found on youtube. Avoid /ic/, especially /beg/, it's a demoralization hellhole that will have you quitting before you even start.

SS13 outfit/item spriting. 32x32 art is relatively easy compared to a lot of other art/bigger projects.

How do people do those pixel level details? This is beyond my comprehension.

Just draw use reference (art and sprites that inspire you). That is the real secret. Trace what you have trouble with and slightly tweak it.

You don't even have to be that good at drawing even though it helps.

well you should probably learn how to draw in general
it's like trying to learn how to program a specific language without general comp sci/soft engineering training, sure you can probably figure it out but you're going to be best if you have the background

I can, but why the frick would I install ten million dependencies to do so instead of just googling "aseprite free download"
