3 was more fun and more enjoyable the later stages do feel a bit rushed. It feels like a slow opening really fun. Then it's just one boss battle after the next
3 is definitely more fun, but MGS2 is narratively much better. MGS3 being taken more seriously than a fun Bond movie lead to the shitty story decisions later on.
3 was more fun and more enjoyable the later stages do feel a bit rushed. It feels like a slow opening really fun. Then it's just one boss battle after the next
I disagree with 3 being more fun. The game has far more tedious segments and its overall a much slower game. The boss fights are also extremely hit and miss in 3. After The End, most of the the boss fights are shit.. and so are most of the fights before him. The stamina/hunger/healing system in 3 is also lame.
Imagine being this much of an NPC. The only places that would be valid are sections like the bomb disposal, or the sniper section - and only on extreme mode for either. Big Shell is otherwise designed very well. Learning how the guards work in each area is immensely satisfying. Meanwhile, 2 has the best boss fights in the whole series. They're fast and demand perfection on extreme mode.
MGS3 is fun, but it's just slow and tedious. Meanwhile, you say that about Big Shell - but any interior level in 3 is leagues worse in design and they're unsatisfying. Even many of the outdoor areas feel slapdash.
>Then it's just one boss battle after the next
This is almost every game in the series. The stealth-heavy sections are frontloaded and then the end of the game is just cutscenes, forced combat sequences, and boss fights.
the arsenal gear section that takes away your equipment was a giant shock during a first playthrough due to, well, everything, but on replays it's disappointingly short
raiden was one of the best kept secrets in videogame history, he was in none of the promotional material, trailers, sneak peeks, nothing, and when it was revealed that you play as him instead of snake for most of the game some people were insanely pissed
the raiden hate trumped even the initial nero hate until years later, though revengeance helped him become a fan favorite
I'm playing it for the first time and I've got to say, it's REALLY good, but this fricking "It's a masterpiece" is bullshit. The writing isn't as bad as a lot of you homosexuals make it out to be, but it's definitely not as good as early Kojima. At least it's brief. The tapes are pretty good.
i was like you once
once you get what was kojima trying to do, you slowly realize that the story is an unironic masterpiece except for the later parts with the skullface
Honestly the MGS V meta narrative went right over my head...if there was one. I got the whole language and parasite voice thing, albeit convolutedly .. but where the story bleeds over into the real world; when you have meta narrative like in MGS2..i didn't see too much of it. Im genuinely curious maybe I should give the game a second run and try pick up on some things I missed
It's one of those things that I had to re-experience to fully appreciate.
I think the game is unfinished and has a lot of problems, but thankfully with the true ending released I can sort of experience what his original vision was.
It's funny, by the equivalent time since release, many forgave mgs2, but most people are still pissed by mgsv. Probably because V doesn't even posit to tell a good story and the gameplay throws away old series staples.
Based. First TLOU sucks, and while the second isn't that good, at least it's more interesting (and stealth is somewhat fun, which I didn't expect from NaughtyCuck).
that troony subversive piece of garbage will never be held in the same regard as the masterpiece that is MGS2. All they had to do was continue the story, but no, the nasty little raton homosexual israelite had to israelite it all up.
TLOU2 will always be the game that tarnished the legacy of TLOU1.

cope. They DID continue the story. Joel lied to Ellie's face at the end of the 1st game, her face even says she knows he's lying. Naturally she explores the truth after being reminded of the Fireflies and fighting with Joel about the lie he told her about there being other immune people. And this shits up their relationship, understandably so. Meanwhile, Joel's actions in wiping out the FireFlies won't go unpunished because you can't wipe out a paramilitary faction and get away with it if someone's been shown to have been relentlessly tracking you down over the course of 4-5 years.
Ellie's anger derives from spending the few years left with Joel by being mad at him. She's lost the agency to forgive him just after opening up to him about ready to do so.
the fireflies never had any hope of making a cure or preventative measure for the infection and we have no reason to believe they did, nevermind being able to mass produce it
the fact of the matter is that they were going to butcher ellie for no reason, but the second game tries extremely hard to gaslight you into thinking otherwise because the story can't work if you think about it too hard
Fanfiction tier cope defense that people here made up to deal with the fact that they couldn't understand Part 2. A better defense for what Joel did that makes more thematic sense is that if you can't save Ellie then humanity isn't worth saving.
If this "story" is even worth debating to you you should read actual books instead of kotaku articles.
Frick TLOU and frick Drukmann. c**ts probably never read anything. Its a dumb video game and if you start discussing the finer "plot" points your only putting dudes like the yuk man on his pedestal above actual artists
Nah i would just rather discuss plot points of good literature with people that have degree's instead of being aggressively bored by a bunch of weak gays talking about a video game like it was Bulgakov's Master and Margherita. Theres nothing in TLOU that wasn't ripped directly from anything some hack writer like Mccarthy came up with 20 years prior. Go play your cuck core game and watch your HBO specials

Nice job talking out your ass over something you have no idea about. Classic Ganker poster
Yeah I'll have to agree with you on that one- damn. The plasma gun ALMOST made up for it with that sweet reload sound.
I remember when the movie came out on dvd there was an extras feature that showed you how to play Doom 3- ducking under the imp balls and shit. In 2005 it was like hidden knowledge to me.
I think people don't give enough credit to MGS2's actual gameplay, it was such a massive leap forward compared to 1. Maybe I'm actually crazy but I preferred the stealth gameplay of 2 to 3. It's just tight as hell.
> I preferred the stealth gameplay of 2 to 3. It's just tight as hell.

I unironically prefer the top down camera over tard wrangling the right thumb stick too
Because at the release MGS2 ran at 60 fps and had the environments optimized for the fixed camera. MGS3 ran at 25 fps and had to be re-released to get a more fitting free camera system. Of course now emulating the games brings them closer, but at the time MGS2 was simply the better game.
>I preferred the stealth gameplay of 2 to 3
Most people do, I think. MGS2 was designed for itself, with gameplay that fits leveldesign. MGS3 was trying to build large open spaces on top of a top-down game that was never meant to do that, and then they slapped back camera TPP on top of it in expansion. MGS3 just wasn't nearly as consistent and logical as MGS2, MGS3 outside levels and survival gameplay quirks were cool when it came out, but aged poorly through time
>press button down a little too hard >slit some gay's throat while I'm trying to hold him up >unload a cartridge while I'm trying to be sneaky
this shit is infuriating
Not defending 3 either, 4 had the tightest mechanics, though it had some annoying mechanics too, and no, i don't count TPP as a MGS game in terms of gameplay.
First post modern game, inspired millions, cultural impact with loads of ripple effects, still talked about and referenced to this day. La Creatividad's magnum opus and KDS igniter. Everything about is a work of art, even its controversies. It has earned every single praise it gets.
Many games that tried to copy it in different ways, and most completely missed the point, mgs2 is often blamed for it's ripple effects it had on the industry, when it was on the creators fault for not grasping the lightning in a bottle this game had. Not even mgs3 could top it. It's a unique product and nothing and no one has managed to replicate it ever since. Not even Kojimbo.
When you booted up the PS2 and saw those rain effects for the first time. Shit hit different; you knew you were playing something significant...that some crazy amount of abnomral effort had gone in o the game. Abnormal behaviour more suited to artists than commerce people- gameplay driven by idealism. Yeah, its special. creative synergy on this level in any medium is rare.
>Many games that tried to copy it in different ways, and most completely missed the point, mgs2 is often blamed for it's ripple effects it had on the industry, when it was on the creators fault for not grasping the lightning in a bottle this game had. Very true. I love the fact that MGS2 couldn't exist as a movie or a book with the same impact, and that it used the fact that it's a sequel in its story. It was the perfect time, perfect sequel, perfect jump from PSX to PS2.
I wish Olga was Raiden's love interest instead of Rose tbh. Raiden ending up with Olga and having to take care of Sunny despite her not being his biological daughter would have made way more sense in terms of the themes of the game about how people pass on way more than just genes. Rose was fricking awful and I wish Kojima went with his original idea for the ending where she was supposed to be just an AI.
>Rose was fricking awful and I wish Kojima went with his original idea for the ending where she was supposed to be just an AI.
And how do you know she wasn't? Don't use MGS4 to explain 2 because 2 was meant to be the last one in the MGS saga. As far as I am concerned MGS3 is the last game in the franchise.
Nobody was filtered you homosexual
People were pissed after playing the demo that came with various PS2 magazines which featured Snake in the tanker chapter only to find out the actual game was some femboy homosexual with a nagging c**t girlfriend and the fact the game was just a rerun of the Shadow Moses incident
We all got wowed by the sudden jump in technology but once the dust settled we felt robbed
Kojima came out and said he had no idea people would hate Raiden so much and apologised in multiple interviews
Can confirm. This game was not really that appreciated back then, 1 and 3 were considered substantially superior.
Nowadays we can understand the game in its entirety, not only because we were stupid kids back then and now we're adults, but because parts of the game came to become reality kek

NTA but while it's a great PS1 game the gameplay is simplistic and there's too much god damn backtracking
>snake just betrayed you out of nowhere >olga was the cyborg ninja all along >the colonel and rose were never real, the former is spewing ominous nonsense >you're naked and defenceless against soldiers that look and move unlike anything else in the game until now >you're not sure if what's happening is real or not anymore >that fricking music
no other game sequence has come even close to this shit, NONE
Raiden is such an underrated character in MGS2 that it almost sucks that they had to make him HARDCORE in MGS4 where he barely even was a character, and took until recengence to get some personality back. I still want Rising 2 to give him a new arc.
the story wouldn't work if you played as snake
the entire point that raiden is a blank slate, one that the patriots could manipulate into fulfilling 3S
discussion of kotor2 when it came out >cut content >more like kotor2: the GLITCH lords amirite? >influence lost: kreia
and now that the millennials who played it as kids are now adults, they can appreciate it to its fullest. it really is amazing how well the game turned out despite obsidian being given one year to make it AND it being their first shipped game. even before tslrcm came out I think I played it over 5 times vs playing 1 only twice
>played MGS2 years ago, before the advent of social media wokeness and cancel culture >get to the pic related portion of the game >had a feeling it would be more and more relevant as the time went on, and it gave me a queasy feeling in my stomach >fast forward to 2023, this is literally the reality we live in now, just without the cool nanomachines and cyborgs
The original MGS trilogy, but especially MGS2 go way beyond games, they are actual experiences(not the fake cinematic kind modern gaming claims it has)

If I'm to endure Kojima's cringe writing, the game has to at least be enjoyable to play. This one isn't with it's clunky controls and shitty combat. 2 is not much better.
Shitty missions aside, the stealth-action gameplay is unmatched. CQC branches, infiltration methods, infiltration gadgets even. It's just fun.
too bad about the non existent level design (courtesy of the open world meme) and how you're given a million lethal weapons and tools and no reason to ever use anything but a silenced tranquilizer pistol
>no reason to ever use anything but a silenced tranquilizer pistol
Quiet's tranquilizer sniper was great
>no reason to ever use anything but a silenced tranquilizer pistol
Wrong
I respect that you like 5 and 3 but why you rate 1 so low?
NTA but while it's a great PS1 game the gameplay is simplistic and there's too much god damn backtracking
whatever you say
Most of the games in this thread are normal titles that were well received at launch.
God i fricking love mgs2, my favorite vidya of all time
RE5 filtered so many people it's not even funny
I remember the shitstorms about RE5 being bad and Wesker saturation being a meme to upend all memes
shut up, saucy
Tekken 4
the fact that TLOU2 is being talked about in the same breath as MGS2 is a testament to this board's idiocy
Using the phrase "the fact that" is a testament that you spend a lot of your time on reddit.
reddit is the one place that adores TLOU2
Except for the entire circlejerk subreddit focused on hating it
Agreed, what the Christ
You didn’t play it. Midwits here couldn’t get it, bought into the fake leaks and refuse to see past the gay characters
Of course I wouldn't play a Naughty Dog game, I'm heterosexual.
>snake just betrayed you out of nowhere
>olga was the cyborg ninja all along
>the colonel and rose were never real, the former is spewing ominous nonsense
>you're naked and defenceless against soldiers that look and move unlike anything else in the game until now
>you're not sure if what's happening is real or not anymore
>that fricking music
no other game sequence has come even close to this shit, NONE
>YOU RIKE MGS RIGHT? YOU RIKE SNAKE RIGHT? YOU CAN PLAY AS SNAKE AGAIN!
>HAHA JOKES ON YOU, NOW YOU PRAY AS A GAY BLONDE BOY HAHAA HAIYA
Raiden is such an underrated character in MGS2 that it almost sucks that they had to make him HARDCORE in MGS4 where he barely even was a character, and took until recengence to get some personality back. I still want Rising 2 to give him a new arc.
the story wouldn't work if you played as snake
the entire point that raiden is a blank slate, one that the patriots could manipulate into fulfilling 3S
>in MG1 if you turn the console off you lose and the bad guys win
>in MGS2 if you turn the console off the bad guys lose and you win
BRAVO KOJIMA
>MGS2
>cult classic
MGS2 is overwhelmingly viewed as one of the greatest games of all time. definitely not a cult classic
discussion of kotor2 when it came out
>cut content
>more like kotor2: the GLITCH lords amirite?
>influence lost: kreia
and now that the millennials who played it as kids are now adults, they can appreciate it to its fullest. it really is amazing how well the game turned out despite obsidian being given one year to make it AND it being their first shipped game. even before tslrcm came out I think I played it over 5 times vs playing 1 only twice
Entire game is VR mission, Kojima said that during one interview for some magazine. Move on homies
the story went off the rails at the end
that's kind of the point
snake was never part of the simulation
>snake was never part of the simulation
except the events of the game were not a VR simulation
they weren't, but all the events in the story were simulated before being carried out, and snake was not a factor then
>but all the events in the story were simulated before being carried out
I still feel the whole Solid Snake Simulation thing was a cop-out to excuse the bad level design
it was just the bullshit fed to ocelot to keep him in the dark
Drakengard.
>played MGS2 years ago, before the advent of social media wokeness and cancel culture
>get to the pic related portion of the game
>had a feeling it would be more and more relevant as the time went on, and it gave me a queasy feeling in my stomach
>fast forward to 2023, this is literally the reality we live in now, just without the cool nanomachines and cyborgs
The original MGS trilogy, but especially MGS2 go way beyond games, they are actual experiences(not the fake cinematic kind modern gaming claims it has)
funny thing is that this very website is one of the isolated echo chambers they talk about, so any discussion about the topic becomes very ironic
could've read a dan brown novel instead
>Aren't we(Gankerners) the very same people that image is talking about? Why, of course we are! This wouldn't happen on MY site where I came from!(reddit) After all, we're all individual, thought-provoking philosophers without any echo chambers, which is why I came here to Ganker in the first place: because I have been banned for wrongthink
>God, what's with all the ECHO CHAMBERS on this site, why are there different boards that all have different topics to discuss and variety of views on every topic without any general, 100% agreed upon consensus? I need to be told what to think!
Umineko
MGS2 is still shit and the worst game in the series
>inb4 LE FILTERED
The characters are dogshit, the story is moronic, the level design is atrocious and every single gameplay section has its own shitty anti-fun gimmick.
MGS2gays are the same as DS2gays and DMC2gays
you wouldn't be able to fight your way out of a coffee filter
>Jak 2
>Prince of Persia Warrior Within
